Laurence Kain, Capital Brewing Co.’s managing director, reveals his top spots to have the best weekend ever What’s the night-life like in Canberra? It’s pretty amazing. We have a lot of incredible restaurants and bars. For me and my wife, a really good night out starts in Lyneham at The Old Canberra Inn for warm-up beers, moves to Lazy-Su in Braddon for a vegan banquet, followed by Gelato Messina, and a few drinks at Hippo Co or Bar Rochford to finish things off. Is there a secret spot in Canberra that you just love? James Turrell’s Skyspace installation at the National Gallery of Australia. It is very meditative – and nice and cool when it’s super-hot outside. What would you say is the best outdoor activity to enjoy in Canberra? We have some of the best granite climbing in Australia, so get up to Booroomba Rocks in Namadgi National Park. It’s probably not the best spot for beginner climbers, but there are some truly amazing lines.

Public in Manuka is a great place for a pre-dinner drink or catch-up with friends, as is Joe’s Bar, at the East Hotel in Kingston, which is more intimate and has terrific food. What spots do you always love to take visitors to? We like to go up to Red Hill Lookout for a great panoramic view out over Canberra and also take a walk around Lake Burley Griffin. The Aboriginal Memorial at the National Gallery of Australia
INSIDER VIEW Tina Baum, who is from the Larrakia/ Wardaman/Karajarri peoples of the Northern Territory and Western Australia, has been the curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at the National Gallery of Australia since 2005 What is the must-see Indigenous artwork at the gallery? Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri’s painting Warlugulong, which – at $2.4 million – is one of the most expensive Indigenous artworks sold at auction. This incredibly powerful work has so many layers; it’s like a storybook. There are eight or nine different stories, including the importance of sharing food.
What surprises visitors most when they come to the gallery? The diversity of the work. It’s not just dot and bark paintings, it’s a whole raft of designs and ways of telling stories about connecting to country, history and culture.

I often walk the trails of Mount Ainslie for the great views.
Family-friendly Mountain biking through the Majura Pines is a fun day out, as there is an abundance of trails that suit all levels.
Hidden secret My family will often go for a leisurely paddle and have a picnic on Springbank Island. A few years back, we even had a pirate birthday party there for my son. I paddled over to the island before the kids arrived to scatter chocolate gold coins and other treats for a treasure hunt. It was a blast of a party!
Dining My favourite dining spot is Lazy-Su, an Asian eatery in Braddon – the food is awesome.

Main Range Walk
What season do you prefer and why? Spring – you get beautiful weather and snow, and the snow conditions are the easiest to ski. Spring turns the valleys green and the raspberries in our patch start growing.
What events would you recommend in the Snowy Mountains region? The Thredbo Memorial Race, which commemorates and celebrates those who lost their lives in the [1997] Thredbo landslide. It brings the community together in a fun way, but it’s serious as well. The new L’Etape cycle race and the annual motorbike Snowy Ride are also two interesting events because they bring a whole different crowd to see the mountains.
What is your favourite restaurant?
MAIN RANGE Pass glacial lakes, historic huts and the fabled Snowy River as you hike through alpine country on the Main Range Walk in Kosciuszko National Park, a UNESCOdesignated biosphere reserve. This challenging full-day trek is a 22km loop from Charlotte Pass that takes you up to the 2228m summit
Crackenback Farm, because I can walk there from the distillery and the food is excellent. of Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. The walk is snowbound in winter, so it’s best to tackle it in the warmer months. If you’re well equipped and prepared for back-country camping, you can spread the walk over a couple of days instead. nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/ walking-tracks/main-range-walking-track
What is one thing that surprises people most about this region? Australians accept that we have snowfields dotted with gum trees, but anyone visiting from outside the country finds this combination extraordinary.
