TRUFFLES GALORE
CULTURE VULTURES
Now in its 10th consecutive year, The Truffle Festival — Canberra Region is the first and largest festival of its kind in Australia. Each year from June to August events are held across the Canberra region highlighting the Black Winter Truffle. Participating venues offer a range of opportunities to taste and experience the magic of these highly-prized gems. Indulge in the special flavours and aromas of truffle dishes at local restaurants and cafes. Join a hunt and see for yourself how the talented dogs unearth truffles. Learn from chefs and other truffle experts at a cooking class or demonstration or pop along to a farmer’s market. It’s the ultimate foodie festival.
Canberra will inspire your creativity this winter as it welcomes exhibitions, performances and festivals that celebrate the arts. The Canberra Writers Festival (23–26 August) returns with a jam-packed program of authors with works spanning genres and the globe. Opera aficionados, symphony orchestra enthusiasts and chamber choir fanatics will be spoiled for choice as a series of galas and performances take place in awe-inspiring locations including the High Court of Australia, National Gallery of Australia and Llewellyn Hall at The Australian National University. Expect the high calibre of performances to continue on stage as the Canberra Theatre Centre brings world-class performance to the nation’s capital, including the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Dark Emu and Sydney Dance Company’s ab [intra]. Make time to experience the glitz and glamour of Cartier: The Exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia, and view intriguing objects in the National Museum of Australia’s So that you might know each other: Faith and Culture in Islam. INDULGE AND RECONNECT Winter is the perfect time to escape with your loved ones and enjoy a luxurious mini-break in Canberra. Begin your day with a serene hot air balloon ride above Canberra as you take in the sweeping views from all angles. After that, grab a coffee from The Cupping Room or make your way down through the bustling Braddon precinct. Spend your day learning a new skill like glass making at the Canberra Glassworks, meandering through one of Canberra’s markets or take in the sights at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.
Explore Fyshwick where you can taste locally brewed beers at Capital Brewing Co., give bouldering a crack at Blochaus or take to the slopes at Vertikal Snowsports indoor skiing. Catch a flick at Palace Electric Cinema or a cult Aussie classic as part of the NFSA Restores series at the National Film and Sound Archives. Enjoy a fireplace feast with seasonal local produce at one of our award-winning restaurants in the Braddon, NewActon or Kingston Foreshore precincts. And what would a romantic escape be without some vino? Sample the best of the Canberra district’s vineyards straight from the source by exploring cellar doors, or head to Gourmet Traveller’s best bar, Bar Rochford for a warming drink.
Enjoy the season of sport in the capital this winter.
GET OUT AND ABOUT Head out and explore the bush capital over winter. Corin Forest is Canberra’s home of snow — just a 45-minute drive from Canberra and you’ll be able to enjoy tobogganing and more — an experience the whole family can enjoy (snow conditions permitting). Got energy to burn? Stromlo Forest Park is a world-class mountain-biking facility only 15 minutes from Canberra — expert riders will love the Vapour Trail, but there’s also plenty for beginners to cut their teeth on. Enjoy a scenic horse ride and lunch with Burnelee Excursions on Horseback, a unique way to enjoy the Canberra region. And sports fans, there’s plenty for you to get excited about. The Canberra Raiders are set to continue a stellar season with winter home matches at GIO Stadium as the Panthers, Cowboys, Tigers, Roosters and
Rabbitohs come to town. The stadium will also see the Plus500 Brumbies take on the Sunwolves and Hurricanes in June. GWS Giants hope to continue their fantastic run at UNSW Canberra Oval when they face the Crows at Manuka. And the AIS Arena will see the GIANTS Netball take on the Thunderbirds, which is sure to be an exciting game.
Make the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre your one stop shop for all your booking, shopping and information needs. Head to Regatta Point, Barrine Drive to organise your short-break in Canberra.
