Apprenticeship Framework

The aim of the Health and Social Care Apprenticeship is to provide learners with the skills and knowledge needed to progress into roles within the Health and Social Care Sector. The programme is aimed at those in roles supporting adults in that exercise autonomy and judgement within limited parameters, such as Senior/Social Care Workers or Senior Support Workers.

The programme prepares learners for roles such as:

Successful completion of this qualification will enable learners to work with more autonomy and responsibility as a qualified Level 3 Health and Social Care Senior Care Worker, with a focus on adults who are vulnerable or in need.

The qualification provides appropriate knowledge and competence to practice and support learners to progress to;

• Level 4 Professional Practice in Health and Social Care

• Senior / Social Care Worker

• Senior Support Care Worker

Who is this apprenticeship for?

This programme is for individuals who are currently working in the health and social care sector who require the qualification for Social Care Wales purposes.

It is suitable for;

• Learners who have successfully completed the Level 2 Health and Social Care: Core and Practice qualification

• Learners who understand, and apply in practice, person-centred approached

• Learners who promote and support effective practice within Health and Social Care and are aware of key policies within the sector to understand how these affect service development and delivery

• Learners who apply a range of problem-solving techniques reflect on practice to continuously improve use of literacy, numeracy and digital competency skills whilst

Overview

The qualification will provide a thorough introduction to the principles, values and knowledge needed to work in the healthcare sector with adults. The content for this qualification supports learners to develop their knowledge, understanding and practical skills of:

• The core principles and values which underpin health and social care practice

• Ways of working in the health and social care sectors

• Effective practice within the health and social care

• Progression routes to further study or employment within Health and Social Care safeguarding.

On completion of this apprenticeship, you will achieve the following:

Level 3 Health and Social Care - Adults

This is the qualification you will be completing alongside your employment.

Length of time to complete

We will tailor your learning programmes to suit your needs, so that each learner’s experience is unique. While learner’s needs will be different, the recommended time to complete this programme is 22 months

Course Delivery

This qualification is divided into two components:

1. The Core qualification

2. The Practice qualification.

They will both be delivered through a mixture of online remote learning sessions and 1to-1 sessions with tutors and an assessor. The online sessions will take place once or twice a month which could be between one to three hours long:

• 5 x workshops of three hours long

• 3 x sample case studies of one hour long

• 3 x real live case studies of one hour long

• 1 x sample multiple choice test

• 1 x real live multiple-choice test

• 1 x portfolio of evidence built up of product evidence and;

• 12 x in depth reflective accounts

• 6 x observation plans

• 6 x observations

• 6 x evaluations

• 1 x 25-minute professional discussion

Learners will also be set tasks to complete between each visit, for approximately 20 hours per month (please note – this is just a guide and will vary based on learner needs).

Learners who have completed the All Wales Induction Framework (AWIF); it will be the assessor’s responsibility to cross-reference into the learner’s portfolio but learners must provide the evidence. Assessor will use the completed sample case studies and undertake verbal questioning to assess learner’s knowledge before making a judgment on whether the learner is ‘test ready’. If a learner does not need to attend core workshops but they need ESW skill sessions then they must attend the ESW skill sessions separately.

To achieve the Level 3 qualification, the learners must achieve the mandatory unit (18 credits) and as a minimum of 14 credits from Group A and the remaining 18 credits from either Group A or Group B.

Workshops

We run a series of workshops that will help develop the knowledge needed for your programme for the Core with our Tutor Chris Knapman. These workshops are delivered using online programmes such as Microsoft Teams.

We have designed our workshops on a week 1 / week 2 / week 3 basis to suit all learners shift patterns. An assessor will book the learners onto the workshops throughout the learner’s progress – learners are not required to attend a full week of training in one go; learners would attend one for two modules per month.

Principles and Values

This workshop will ensure that learners gain knowledge of how legislation, national policies, guidelines and frameworks support health and social care provision for adults.

Learners will understand the need to promote equality and diversity and how person centred and rights-based approaches relate to health and social care including how appropriate risk-taking supports well-being voice, choice and control. Learners will appreciate the importance of effective communication, including the role of Welsh language and culture, in supporting health and social care provision and how periods of change and transition can impact on individuals. Understanding will be gained of how to develop positive relationships with individuals within professional boundaries and approaches that support positive behaviour including how learners’ own beliefs, values and life experiences can affect attitude and behaviour towards others.

Health and well-being

This workshop will ensure that learners gain knowledge of factors that may affect the health and well-being of individuals. This will include understanding of the links between good physical health and mental health, and how these can be impacted by different factors such as physical activity and self-identity. Knowledge will be gained of the importance and ways of ensuring appropriate personal care for individuals. This includes pressure area care, mouth care, foot care and continence care. Learners will understand the importance of nutrition and hydration including government guidelines. Learners will understand responsibilities, legislation and guidelines and their importance in the administration of medication.

Professional Practice

This workshop will ensure that learners understand their job role, responsibilities including duty of care, accountabilities and standards of professional behaviour. Learners will understand codes of conduct, professionalism, policies and procedures including confidentiality, the limitations of their role and responsibilities and when to seek additional support to deal with situations beyond their job role or conflicts and dilemmas. Learners will gain knowledge of partnership working, the importance and ways of effective team and multi-agency working. Learners will cover how to handle, store and record information following legislation and codes of conduct. Learners will understand the importance of continual professional development and reflection to improve practice.

Safeguarding

Learners will understand the terms safeguarding and categories and signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect. Knowledge will be gained of legislation and national policies and codes of conduct in relation to safeguarding, the roles of different agencies and recording and reporting procedures where abuse is indicated. The learner will know and understand their responsibilities in relation to safeguarding including the role of advocacy, appropriate relationships and person/child centred practices. The learner will cover ways of responding, recording and reporting procedures to follow including an understanding of ‘whistleblowing’ and boundaries of confidentiality.

Health and Safety

Learners will understand how health and safety legislation impacts on daily practice, their role and responsibilities and those of employers. Learners will cover the types of accidents, emergencies and hazards that may occur in a workplace/setting and how risk assessment is used to support health and safety. Learners will understand responsibilities in relation to carrying out, recording and following risk assessments and the importance of reporting and recording health and safety concerns and incidents. Knowledge will be gained of legislation relating to fire safety, moving and handling, infection control, food safety, waste disposal and security with understanding of relevant safe good practices and procedures. Learners will know signs of stress, circumstances that may cause stress and actions that can be taken to reduce and manage stress including support available.

Essential Skills Qualifications

When you agree to undertake an apprenticeship, you may be required to complete Essential Skills as part of your apprenticeship framework.

What are Essential Skills?

Essential Skills qualifications develop learners’ knowledge and understanding of Application of Number (Numeracy), Communication (Literacy) and Digital Literacy. These qualifications enable learners to demonstrate that they can apply these vital skills to a range of situations whilst at work, in learning and throughout life.

The Essential Skills qualifications you are required to complete depend upon your previous qualifications, the apprenticeship level you are completing and your own particular needs.

The Essential Skills qualifications are all available at four levels, depending on your individual needs (Entry 3, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3) and includes:

Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST)

• Digital collaboration

• Digital creativity

• Digital learning

All learners will undertake WEST when signing up for an apprenticeship. These are a set of online skills assessments that calculate the level of ability and understanding in Literacy (Communication), Numeracy (Application of Number) and Digital Literacy.

The WEST assessments are not exams and have no pass or fail criteria. WEST assessments can be completed in Welsh or English, and the Application of Number assessment is bilingual (any learners who would like to explore this, just ask!). There are no set time limits for any of the assessments, but they must be taken under supervised conditions.

WEST is a vital part of your learner journey. The results help your Essential Skills Tutor plan your learning programme to meet your specific needs. As well as assessments, you will also be encouraged to use WEST to develop your skills throughout your apprenticeship programme. Your Essential Skills Tutor will provide guidance on how to use WEST fully.

Course Delivery

If you are required to complete your Essential Skills as part of the apprenticeship framework, they will be discussed at your first visit with your Assessor and employer.

Through analysis of your WEST results and a detailed conversation, a learning plan will be put in place to support the achievement of any Essential Skills you are required to complete.

Together you will agree the best times and locations for the support for both you and your employer, balancing your personal needs and your work life commitments.

If you have already achieved qualifications in literacy, numeracy or digital literacy, but would like to further develop these skills with the support of our Tutors, just let your Assessor know and this can be arranged for you.

Whilst we cannot say for certain how long it will take to complete your Essential Skills qualification(s), we are able to give you a little guidance on time frames. • Each skills session is between 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending upon method of support. Your Essential Skills Tutor will discuss the time required for your Essential Skills assessments with you, which will also depend upon the level you are taking.

• We often find that where we need to work with you to upskill by more than one level, we may ask you to attend some extra sessions with us. Don’t worry – we have a range of ways that we can help you to do this (for example through skills sessions)

• We can support you on a one to one basis, but as you may appreciate these spaces are limited. Please discuss with your Assessor.

Proxy

If you already hold qualifications, these may be used as ‘proxy’ towards your apprenticeship framework. As a result, you will be exempt from achieving that particular Essential Skill, if you wish.

Below are some examples, although this list is not exhaustive. All applications for proxy will be checked and confirmed at the start of your apprenticeship. Please be aware that original certificates will need to be produced within the first 8 weeks in order to be exempt from Essential Skills.

This will be discussed with you before you sign up with us, and will also be followed up by your assessor before and during your first visit from us.

Essential Skill

Welsh Language Development

As part of your Welsh Government funded framework, you will be supported to develop and maintain your Welsh language skills for the workplace.

What is Welsh Language Development?

ACT are committed to playing their part in the Welsh Government Million Speakers strategy. All learners will complete the Prentis-iaith Welsh Language Development course as part of your framework with us.

Don’t panic – this is as a means of development and is aimed to support you with the development of your Welsh Language skills. This course is specially designed to give apprentices a basic knowledge of Welsh for the workplace and consists of 6 interactive modules to complete online. The course will be completed throughout your framework, with support from your assessor.

Already bilingual?

If you are Welsh speaking you will undertake your learning bilingually. In practice this means that you can choose the elements of your learning that you would like to complete through the medium of Welsh. You will be able to discuss your particular preferences with your assessor.
