EXCITING NEW OPPORTUNITIES As some of you may know, we are currently going through a tender process for the Welsh Government’s new Working Wales programme. This new programme will start on 1st April 2019 and is designed to support people of all ages to overcome barriers and gain the skills to achieve and maintain good quality and sustainable employment. It will bring together the Welsh Government’s current suite of employability support (Jobs Growth Wales, ReAct, Traineeships and the Employability Skills Programme). This is a very exciting opportunity for ACT and we are looking forward to sharing more information with you soon.
Estyn UPDATE The Estyn inspection is happening later than we anticipated and has been pushed back to later on in the year. Thank you for all your hard work preparing for this and for your ongoing efforts to ensure we are ready for the inspection as and when it happens. As soon as we are made aware of the inspection dates, all staff will be notified.
GDPR Just a reminder that from the 25th May the new GDPR laws will come into effect. Replacing the Data Protection Act, the
new data laws are designed to give citizens more control over their data. As you know, ACT stores, shares and uses a variety of data for business purposes. So, for the past few months we have had a GDPR working group tasked with the business of ensuring all teams are on board with the changes and that our new systems and ways of working are in line and compliant with GDPR regulations. Following on from the GDPR there will also be a new Data Protection Bill to ensure that the UK is prepared for the future after we have left the EU. DCMS Secretary of State, Matt Hancock commented that "The Data Protection Bill will give people more control over their data, support businesses in their use of data, and prepare Britain for Brexit. In the digital world strong cyber security and data protection go hand in hand. This Bill is a key component of our work to secure personal information online.” Information around the GDPR can seem vast and complex, not to mention confusing. If you would like to know more about how the GDPR will affect you personally this short video gives a brief summary: http://gdprandyou.ie/
INVESTORS IN PEOPLE REVIEW UPDATE In 2017, ACT obtained Gold Accreditation from the Investors in People – setting the standards
5
for better people management. We’re incredibly proud of this achievement, but in true ACT spirit we’re not content to just settle for Gold. Over the next 2 years our objective is to work even harder to achieve Platinum Accreditation and be the first organisation in Wales to do this. Our recent 12 month review suggests that we are making really positive progress in making this goal become a reality when reaccreditation takes place in 2020. Rebecca Cooper, Head of People & Development commented, “12 months in, I am extremely proud of our progress towards the recommendations from our report and am confident in our commitment to taking this further. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how we can further improve people management practices at ACT Training, I would be delighted to hear them.

MTS ADULT LEARNER SUCCESS We were thrilled that Julie Coulthard, one of our adult learners who we nominated for the 2018 Inspire Awards, recently met the Minister for Welsh Language and Lifelong Learning, Eluned Morgan. The Minister visited The Hair Den in Barry where Julie now works, to see how Julie had benefitted from the £13.5 million Parents, Childcare and Employment (PaCE) programme, jointly funded by Welsh Government and the European Social Fund. Julie has four children, and after the birth of her youngest daughter, a relationship breakdown meant despite having always balanced work and childcare previously, she could no longer afford to work and was receiving benefits. With the help of her PaCE adviser, Julie started to train as a hairdresser with ACT Training – a career she had always wanted to pursue. Within 18 months, she had completed her Level 2 and 3 qualifications in hairdressing. Now, two years on Julie is fully qualified and working 16 hours a week at the Hair Den salon. We see thousands of learners each year at ACT, but rarely do we come across someone as driven and inspiring as Julie. We are so proud to see Julie thriving - she deserves lots of success and happiness in her life.
"96% of learners rated their experience as good or excellent" RESULTS ARE IN FOR OUR ANNUAL ACT LEARNER VOICE SURVEY! In March this year, 50% of all current learners on programmes across the ACT network took part in our annual Learner Voice survey. Designed to monitor learner satisfaction across a variety of areas, the survey topics included: the sign up process, teaching and learning, and learners overall experience at ACT. Results from the survey provide invaluable insight in to how our learners are getting on and this year we had our highest number of survey responses yet – a staggering 2226. Over the past year, we have continued to build on previous survey feedback and our recent results reflect this. Overall Experience: 96% of learners rated their experience as good or excellent (2% point increase on last year) with rates of satisfaction increasing across nearly all areas.
7
Essential Skills: 83% of learners feel we are doing great with developing their literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills (4% point increase on last year). Welsh language in delivery: A big focus for the Welsh Government and Estyn. This year we saw a 6% point increase of learners hearing or using Welsh on their programme. There is certainly room for improvement but we feel we are moving in the right direction with this. Technology: A key focus and investment for us. We have made significant improvements including: WiFi upgrades across centres, developing staff skills and introducing OneFile. 87% of learners rated our use of technology good or excellent, which is a fantastic result. Posters featuring the survey results will be appearing across all centres, so please keep a look out and make sure our learners and visitors can see how great we are doing! For full results please contact the Quality Department. As always, Quality will continue to collaborate with all departments to ensure our services to learners improve, as do our survey results. Thanks to all involved in the survey and to everyone at ACT for achieving such great results.

VQ DAY CELEBRATIONS On Thursday 3rd May we celebrated VQ Day! Along with schools, colleges, other training providers and employers across the country, we celebrated the brilliance of vocational qualifications. As a sign of our appreciation and recognition for all that they do, our top employers were sent some delicious treats. See what everyone got up to by searching #VQDay or #DiwrondVQ on social media.

Sponsored by Swansea University School of Management, the Wales Responsible Business Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious awards which recognise responsible business practices and identify and celebrate companies who are making a positive difference to the economic, social and environmental challenges Wales faces.
ACT SCHOOLS AWARDED INDEPENDENT STATUS We are delighted to announce that on the 6th April ACT Schools were awarded independent school status. With only 2 weeks’ notice to prepare for their December inspection, the Schools team did a phenomenal
8
job with Estyn identifying a number of strengths. Perhaps the most impressive feedback being the great quality of teaching, and that staff were clearly committed to establishing a school that makes a difference to the lives of vulnerable learners. Schools Provision Manager, Kelly Rowlands commented, “Securing independent school status has been a pivotal point in the growth and development of ACT Schools, and the inspection provided the perfect opportunity to showcase the fantastic work the team do on a daily basis”. As a result of the independent school status, ACT Schools can now accept up to 150 full time learners across our sites, ensuring that we continue to be one of the largest and highest quality alternative education providers in South Wales for disengaged young people.

HEATHER HANDLEY WINS “CARER OF THE YEAR 2018” Congratulations to Heather Handley, one of our Essential Skills Tutors, who has recently been awarded ‘Carer of the Year’ for the 2018 South Wales Evening Post Community Awards. Nominated by Maggie Davies who calls Heather a “lifesaver” and her “best friend”, Heather supports apprentices out in the work place and is currently working with learners in Health and Social Care settings such as residential homes and Child Care. Tracey Spiller, Manager of the Essential Skills team added, “Heather is a pleasure to work with; she always turns up to work with a smile and a real passion for supporting the learners – and her work colleagues. We are lucky to have her on our team!!”
HYFFORDDIANT CEREDIGION TRAINING SUCCESS A huge congratulations to Robert Davies and Shannon ‘Haf’ Burrill; two learners from our sub-contractors Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training. This July, Robert will be taking part in the Welsh Regional Skills heat and Shannon has recently gone through to the finals of the Screwfix Trade Apprenticeship of the Year awards. We wish Robert and Shannon the best of luck.
DELIVERING ASSESSMENTS DIGITALLY We have been working closely with one of our biggest clients, the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB), to improve our learners' experience by reviewing how we deliver assessments. Using expertise and resources from both organisations, we are working on an e-learning platform which allows assessors to review and moderate learners' progress via online modules, in addition to their monthly site visits. This cuts down waiting time and incorporates more digitally focused e-learning into how we assess. By working collaboratively we have developed a fully comprehensive programme with holistic mapping, which utilises different forms of digitally embedded literacy. Features include Welsh language options, video demonstrations, course expectations and a summary of completed and outstanding tasks. An interactive forum encourages learners
9
The response from learners and ABUHB has been fantastic so far, generating interest from the Education and Development Team who are keen to see how we can roll out and integrate this approach to assessing across other programmes we offer. We are also in discussions with Liberata to create a similar bespoke programme for their learners. Julie Phillips, our Management Curriculum Coordinator commented, “The ABUHB collaborative package is the first of its kind in terms of the new ways we are assessing our learners. It shows that we not only value and act on our employer feedback, but we put their needs at the heart of the services we deliver alongside the qualifications themselves.”

PROGRESS FOR OUR COACHING AND MENTORING LEARNERS In June 2017, the ACT Management Academy team began delivering the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring, with plans to roll out the Level 3 certificate later this year. The Coaching and Mentoring programme, headed up by Chris Hughes, is part of our goal to embed coaching within our existing culture. A number of staff signed up to the Level 5 course, and we are delighted to report that our internal candidates are progressing very well indeed. A big round of applause especially to Janet Welch from Business Services, who has already fully completed her qualification. Speaking about her achievement, Janet commented
room 101 We want to know your frustrations at work, so we can do our best to help fix them! Send them through to: room101@acttraining.org.uk In response to the suggestions we've received so far, Managing Director, Richard Spear commented:
“I knew the course would be challenging but the support I had from my tutor and fellow peers was fantastic. The programme has been incredibly beneficial, from both a professional and personal point of view and has provided a renewed empathy for learners balancing both work and study time. I highly recommend the course to others. It’s been very rewarding and has really positively impacted myself and my team.” Our very own Chris Hughes has also just passed his Level 7 Coaching and Mentoring certificate at the University of South Wales. Chris is always the first to celebrate others success so we are thrilled to be able to give a big shout out for his recent achievement.
"I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has submitted their Room 101 ideas, and in particular thanks to members of the staff council for collating suggestions from their teams. We will be publishing a Room 101 Insight Special by the end of May, to share our responses and highlight how you are helping us become a more efficient and effective organisation, with an even stronger focus on what is important to learners and employers."
11
Chris stated “These qualifications are very relevant and useful throughout ACT, having a positive impact on both our staff and learners. The workshops are very enjoyable and places can be booked via CascadeGo following discussions with line managers.”

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK May 14th to 20th marked Mental Health Awareness Week. A topic that the Care, Support and Guidance Team (CSG) are focused strongly on this year. As a company we are fully aware of the impact mental health has on society and the barriers people face. As a result, ACT will shortly be signing up to the Time to Change Wales - Employer Pledge, a public declaration that ACT takes the issue of mental health seriously. In support of Mental Health Awareness Week, the CSG team launched ACT Curry and Chaat events, giving staff and learners the opportunity to take time out and talk. CSG iPad stations are also due to be installed across all centres featuring the 'ACT Anywhere' app and a number of self-help apps promoting positive mental health for all.

quality WELCOME BACK! First of all, we’d like to welcome back Kath Wing (Senior Quality Manager) and Charlotte Dando (Care, Support and Guidance Manager) who have both recently returned from Maternity leave. It’s great to have you back!
EMPLOYER FEEDBACK We are currently developing an employer survey to gather views and opinions on the service we provide. The survey aims to ensure we are meeting the needs of our employers and to follow up on any actions and improvements we have made since our previous survey in October 2017. The main areas highlighted for development from our 2017 feedback, included communication with employers and ensuring all employers are informed of the progress our learners are making with their qualification. The survey consistently highlighted Gareth Denner in the Business Development Team and the Childcare Delivery Team for the positive support they provide. Keep up the great work guys!
JISC DIGITAL DISCOVER TRACKER Following on from our pilot of the JISC Digital Discovery Tool, we have received a snapshot of the digital capability of staff who took part. The feedback has been positive and we are keen to roll this out across the company following its full release later this year. Although the sample size was small, it was good to see one of our strengths was Digital Identity Management. This reinforces the improvements we have made to achieve ISO standards, and prepare for the forthcoming GDPR enforcement. Two areas which we need to strengthen seem to be Digital Creation and Digital Teaching. You might be interested to hear that we have also expressed our interest to take part in the leaner version of this pilot.
ISO 9001:2015 We successfully achieved accreditation to the 2015 standards on the 28th March. A huge thank you to Kath Mathias for organising and co-ordinating the audit and transition. We would also like to thank Becky Ellaway for
14
ensuring the auditor had access to all the information required in the Bridgend and Swansea centres, who featured in the audit. Both centres received great feedback, in particular for their great communication skills and Bridgend was noted for its good practice displayed in Hairdressing IALP. The full report will arrive in due course.
MATRIX We will be completing a review of our re- accreditation of the ‘Matrix’ standard this month. This is a quality framework for us to assess and measure our information, advice and guidance services to support individuals in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals.
NTfW TEACHING AND LEARNING CONFERENCE – EMPOWERING LEARNERS FOR FUTURE PROSPERITY Representatives from ACT and our network attended all Teaching and learning CPD workshops and the CPD group will be ensuring the concepts are incorporated into next years’ Training Plan: All workshops and presentations can be found here: https://bit.ly/2G5Faby

This month we have put the spotlight on Dawn Vardon, who joined ACT in April 2015 as a Data Administrator in our Aberdare Centre.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself…
Hi Dawn, tell us a little bit about your role, and what your average day looks like.
Where is the best place you have travelled to?
I’m responsible for inputting all the data, including the learner’s data at the centre and dealing with pay issues. Basically anything data related… oh and making sure I have excellent rapport with the learners and staff here. What is the most rewarding part of your current role? EVERYTHING! Everything about my role is rewarding. If I can put a smile on a learner's face and make their day a little brighter then I feel as if I’ve really made a difference.
I was the badminton champion at my secondary school at the age of 13!
By far Benidorm. What was the last book you read? Fifty Shades of Grey.
What would be your top tip for colleagues? Stay calm and be happy A big thank you to Dawn for answering our questions this month. If you would like to feature in our ‘Staff in the Spotlight’ section, or have a colleague you’d like to put forward, please email internalcommunications@ acttraining.org.uk
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had? I’ve never had a job I disliked. I’ve loved all the jobs I’ve done as I’ve worked with really lovely people. How do you like to spend your time when you’re not working? I love holidaying with my hubby, socialising with my friends and visiting my two boys as they live far away.

introducing the care, support & guidance team... WHAT IS CARE, SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE? What is Engagement? Engagement work with learners from a variety of backgrounds, who often have barriers to learning. The principal aim of engagement is to help these learners find focus, by providing a programme which assists learners in discovering what they are good at and what they enjoy. When learners are having fun with their peers, their self-esteem improves as does their capacity to build relationships. This in turn helps improve their mental health and wellbeing, whilst increasing their independence. Activities on offer include:

book club This issue our recommended read is – Outliers: The Story of Success
limited to 50 copies!
Why are people successful? For centuries, humankind has grappled with this question, searching for the secret to accomplishing great things. In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an invigorating intellectual journey to show us what makes an extreme overachiever. He reveals that we pay far too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where successful people are from: their culture, their family, and their
generation. Overturning many of our conventional notions and creating an entirely new model for seeing the world. This is a brilliant and entertaining read that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.
TO ORDER YOUR COPY To order your copy please email bookclub@acttraining.org.uk with your name and centre. Please submit your thoughts and feedback after reading this book through to Rachael Lewis: rachaellewis@acttraining.org.uk – as this will feature in the next issue of ACT Insight.
Last issue our recommended read was The Power of Moments: Why certain experiences have extraordinary impact. Thank you to everyone who got on board with the book club, ordered a copy and read the book. Here is some feedback from the book below. “I found this book really easy to dip in and out of and helpful on both a practical and personal level. I must admit I was a bit sceptical of the title at first, but thankfully it wasn’t a self-help book (phew) more a book of really useful ideas and suggestions about how to create more memorable moments in your life… the good ones that is.” - Helen Hallam
