CARE SUPPORT & GUIDANCE (CSG) AND WELLBEING TRAINING Over the past few years, as part of our ongoing happiness and engagement strategy, ACT has been working to develop a comprehensive package to help improve the wellbeing of our staff and learners. In November 2019, we were excited to launch our first Wellbeing Hub at Ocean Park House - with plans to roll out further hubs across all centres later this year.
The aim of the Wellbeing Hub is to create an accessible, multi-purpose space that works for everyone. Whether you need to take some time out, work quietly, or meet a colleague or learner, the Wellbeing Hub offers a quiet, safe environment for everyone. In addition to all this, staff can also access training, counselling and coaching at the hub too.

Who are you and what’s your role?
members of staff working across seven sites and we’re constantly trying to strike the right balance between email overload, engaging staff with new communication channels and reaching those who work remotely. Internal comms is also very much a two-way street, we know there are always great things happening across ACT, but we don’t always get to hear about it, so don’t be shy. Next time a learner or staff member does something pretty amazing and you feel they deserve a great big shout out, get in touch!
My name is Helen Hallam and I’m Head of Marketing & Communications. What are you responsible for? In short, I have overall responsibility for the promotion and positioning of both ACT and ALS brands and the services we offer. This includes managing and monitoring our marketing and communications activities, to ensure they are effective and in line with our business goals.
I was once a contestant on The Weakest Link. I’ll be honest it wasn’t my finest moment
What are your plans for the future of ACT? Wow, that’s a biggie! If I just concentrate on the year ahead, I would say 2020 is about putting digital first. As a team we are always looking for innovative ways to improve the quality and efficiency of what we do whilst improving our customer/learner experience. This year we will challenge the way we’ve previously marketed and promoted our services, and adopt new technologies and digital systems to provide a more targeted, engaging and personalised experience. On a less geeky note, looking at things from an internal comms perspective, we will continue to build upon all the progress we made last year, in particular the intranet. We want to ensure that as many staff members as possible feel celebrated, engaged and well informed about all things ACT.
What is your proudest moment at ACT? I joined ACT as a Graphic Designer almost six years ago; the Marketing team has changed quite a bit in that time. I feel we’ve grown so much in terms of confidence, knowledge and skills set. Sorry, I know that what I’m about to say is total cheese on toast, but I would have to say that my proudest moment was becoming the manager of such an inspiring, strong and empathic group of women. #girlpower Tell us something we wouldn’t know about you? I was once a contestant on The Weakest Link. I’ll be honest it wasn’t my finest moment. When asked by the scariest woman on TV “In the Gregorian calendar what day of the week is proceeded by Pancake day and falls on the first day of lent?” I confidently and quite smugly replied, Tuesday! Needless to say… I was the weakest link, goodbye!
What’s the biggest challenge your team faces? There are elements of both external and internal comms that can be quite challenging to us as a team. Organisational communications can effect staff engagement, learner and customer satisfaction and how the general public perceive ACT, so no pressure then! From an internal comms perspective, we have just under 400

We’re really proud of you for making it to the finals - well done to you both!
Christmas Market A big round of applause to our OPH Traineeship and Schools learners who successfully ran their first Christmas Market at the OPH Wellbeing Hub on 10th December. The learners handmade all of the items for sale and were also responsible for the running of the market itself. All of the items from the day sold out, with the Christmas wreaths proving to be especially popular. We are incredibly proud to say that the market successfully raised a grand total of £686.80, with all proceeds being donated to our charity partner Teenage Cancer Trust.

Mentoring qualification. They now join our growing team of fully qualified ACT coaches. Speaking on the qualification, Ann Rees commented, “I am really pleased to have achieved this qualification. I am looking forward to coaching staff in different teams, which will give me an experience of ACT life outside of the Apprenticeships route. I feel this will challenge me but I genuinely hope I can add real value to an individual’s role, especially if they haven’t undertaken any coaching. I am chuffed to be on the ACT Coaching team!”
Aberdare and OPH Learners celebrate Christmas at Ynys Hywel! In December, our Aberdare and OPH Traineeship learners headed to Ynys Hywel to kick off the Christmas festivities. Their day consisted of a delicious Christmas lunch, archery and time spent feeding the goats. The trips were a fantastic success and a great way for our learners to celebrate Christmas together.

Introducing our partner...
Inspire Training At ACT we are proud to work in partnership with a strong network of committed, enthusiastic and passionate work-based learning providers, who share our values and strive to achieve excellence through collaboration.
Every issue we interview a different partner to shine a light on the work they do. This time we spoke to Gavin Earley from INSPIRE Training.
Tell us more about the work you do with ACT. Our contract with ACT has varied over the years from Essential Skills in the Workplace, to a focus now on the youth provision within Traineeships. We also deliver unemployed adults courses through Managed Training Services (MTS).
Who are you and what’s your role? I’m Gavin Earley and I'm the Managing Director at INSPIRE Training. I have taught in Primary and Secondary schools, plus colleges and other training providers and soon realised that the formal classroom setting doesn't suit everyone. Hence, setting up my own training provision 14 years ago. With INSPIRE I wanted to offer the opportunity for everyone to achieve, through a variety of delivery methods whether this be practical, theory or work based.
Tell us about a learner/individual who INSPIRE Training have helped? This is difficult as there's been so many. The most satisfying for me is when a young person comes through the door with the preconception that our staff will treat them just like school children, and then the relief that we treat them as young adults. We are here to work with our young people, not against them!
What services do lNSPIRE Training provide?
What’s the best thing about working with ACT?
We deliver the largest Traineeship programme within Swansea, offering up to 10 routes. Learner activities range from cooking, funky pump boxing, 5 a side football, cross fit, outdoor pursuits, film editing and many more. This is all in addition to the classroom based content. INSPIRE also works within 13 Swansea based schools for the 14 - 16 Cynnydd programme and we deliver short, sharp adult courses across the whole of Wales for unemployed adults.
ACT Training's core values are the same as INSPIRE Training. ACT management are friendly and approachable and we share the belief that if we get the learners' journey correct, from the very beginning to the very end, then statistics, reputation, etc. will follow, leading to the success of the company.

Learner Wellbeing Project
In early 2019, our CEO, Andrew Cooksley, spent some time in ACT’s Bridgend Skills Centre shadowing Traineeship Tutors as part of ACT’s annual Senior Management job swap initiative. While engaging with the 1618 year olds enrolled on the Traineeship programme, Andrew was shocked to discover nearly all of the learners smoked. Many of the cigarettes were purchased on the black market and were readily available for young people to buy. On further investigation he found that many learners also had poor diets, didn’t exercise, and their self-esteem, confidence and aspirations were extremely low. Upset by what he was seeing, Andrew decided that something had to be done to improve the wellbeing of these young people – the future of Wales. Working closely with the tutors and learners at the Bridgend Skills Centre, a plan of action was devised and the Learner Wellbeing project was born! In a bid to quit smoking and improve their lifestyle habits, the learners were given gym memberships and participated in various workshops with third sector organisations such as Ash Wales.
12
insight
These workshops were designed to raise awareness around the damaging and lasting effects of poor lifestyle choices. The progress of our Bridgend learners was filmed over several months, which culminated with a challenge; to climb Pen Y Fan. Concerned that the issues our Brigend learners were presenting was a wider social issue, ACT also created a survey which was distributed across all centres to our 16-18 year old Taineeship learners. The goal was to determine whether poor wellbeing is an issue that many young people are currently experiencing.
These workshops were designed to raise awareness around the damaging and lasting effects of poor lifestyle choices.
The survey, which had a 90% response rate, found that:
41% 41% of our learners smoke tobacco, with only around 22% having never smoked.
9% Only 9% always ate five fruit or vegetables every day, with 38% saying they did so never or rarely.
42% Only 42% of our learners said that in the last two weeks they had not been bothered by feeling down, depressed or hopeless. 17% said they had been bothered by this nearly every day. These findings are hugely concerning for ACT and reinforce the undeniable need that more needs to be done to support our learners to become successful, happy and healthy adults.
13
Informed by the Bridgend project, ACT is currently developing a health, wellbeing and happiness action plan which we will launch at an event in the Senedd later on this year. The action plan will entail a comprehensive CPD programme, redesigning our curriculum and working with an even wider range of expert partners. We hope to implement the plan ahead of the launch of the Welsh Government’s new Job Support Wales programme. We firmly believe that this new programme, with its flexibility and strong focus on an individual approach to addressing barriers, will give us a great opportunity to transform the lives of young people across Wales.

Want to quit smoking in 2020?
As part of our ongoing plans to support the health and wellbeing of staff, ACT are offering to assist staff to give up smoking in 2020. Quitting can be a huge challenge both physically and mentally, but has so many health and wellbeing benefits.
We are also happy to consider other suggestions put forward by staff too. Please note, all suggestions will need to be made through P&D so that we can manage all requests fairly.
Support available from ACT will include: •
Purchasing vapes for staff who want to switch from smoking to vaping.
•
Connecting staff with organisations who offer specialist support and sessions to help give up.
•
Supporting staff to attend GP appointments to receive help to quit.
Keep an eye out for further communications coming in February, which will provide more information on quitting smoking and the various support offers available.

P&D New Development Programme Exciting news! ACT will soon be launching a new development programme for staff called Accelerate, Collaborate & Thrive (A.C.T). Managers will be able to nominate high-performing members of staff (at Grade 7 or below) to take part in the programme if they: •
show high levels of commitment within their current role
•
display ACT's core values
•
have a passion for their work/learners/customer service
•
show a willingness to progress within the company
•
show signs of potential leadership qualities
Further details on how to nominate staff will be sent out to managers later this month. There will then be a selection day in February where 8 staff members from across ACT will be selected to take part in a year-long programme commencing in March. The programme will involve quarterly workshops based around Stephen Covey’s 7 habits of highly effective people, and principles of PRINCE2 project management. As well as giving delegates the opportunity to work on an organisational issue selected by ACT’s Board of Directors, successful nominees will be being mentored by members of the Senior Management Team. The programme will then be repeated annually.
P&D FAQ’s The People & Development team have produced a document of ‘frequently asked questions’, to answer many of the generic, commonly asked questions they receive from staff on a regular basis. Please could staff familiarise themselves with this document and refer to it before forwarding questions to P&D. The document is also available under ‘Company Information’ on ‘Cascade Go’ and will be regularly updated. The document can also be found on SharePoint here.

Tell us a little bit about your role, and what your average day looks like. My role involves delivering an interesting, fun and credible qualification to our 16-19 year old Traineeship learners. That’s the easy bit. In addition, my job also requires me to be a sympathetic, motivating, caring and inspirational role model. I also provide our learners with a chance to build their education skills and gain a valued work experience placement in a working environment. On top of that I am a good team player. I pride myself on always being fun and bubbly, making our centre a happy environment for us to all work in.
When I was younger I ran karaoke in a local pub. I loved doing it as I enjoy a good sing song. What is the most rewarding part of your current role? I would say there are many rewards. I guess the most rewarding part is when learners, who have been told throughout most of mainstream school that they would never amount to anything, not only achieve their certificates but also excel in their confidence. They leave ACT with high self-esteem and
a strong belief in their future goals. I recently had a past learner come to see me who was really excited as she had passed her driving test and now has a full time job. She was absolutely beaming. That makes my job so worthwhile. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself… When I was younger I ran karaoke in a local pub. I loved doing it as I enjoy a good sing song. I recently put the app Smule on my phone to do a bit of singing. I don’t think I sound as good to others as I do to myself though. My other half always asks me if we have any earplugs in the house, which says it all. Ha Ha! Where is the best place you have travelled to? This is hard. I’ve been really lucky in life and have been able to travel quite a lot. I lived in Sydney, Australia for 6 months which was amazing. I even managed to climb the Harbour Bridge! I would say one of the prettiest places I’ve visited was Funchal, Madeira. I would also like to visit Japan and hope to do this in the next few years. What was the last album you listened to? I don’t really listen to albums. I normally just put Spotify on and listen to the top 40. I really like Memories by Maroon 5 at the moment but also love
21
the 80’s. You can’t beat a bit of Haircut 100. I love ‘Plus one’. What’s the worst job you’ve ever had? I’ve always just got on with the jobs I’ve had. I think any job is what you make of it really. The most boring job I’ve done was packing cd’s for a company called Nimbus. I still had fun with my colleagues though, and it allowed me to have an extra bit of money. How do you like to spend your time when you’re not working? I love spending time with my family. I can’t think of anything better than a PJ day, films, snacks and lots of conversations with my family. Mobile phones are banned on these days. What would be your top tip for colleagues? I think it would be to pick your battles wisely and never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.
A big thank you to Martina for taking the time to answer our questions this month. If you would like to feature in our Staff in the Spotlight section, or have a colleague you’d like to put forward, please e-mail Rachael Lewis.

book club Last issue, our recommended read was “How to Fail” by Elizabeth Day. Thank you to everyone who got on board with the book club, ordered a copy and read the book. Below is some of the feedback we received: Overall, I thought this was a very good and honest reflection on success and failure and how they are not that different; it’s more our perspectives and emotions toward them. The author used her life experiences to discuss failure, which on the one hand were extremely funny and heart-warming, but on the other dreadfully sad. There were also some poignant messages around failure which I particularly liked: “failure is somehow seen as an end-point by some, rather than it being a staging post for a journey towards greater success”. At times though, I felt the book was a little repetitive, especially around ‘failure at dating and relationships’ as examples which had already been offered were then repeated and added to in later chapters and contextualised. Despite this though, I would still definitely recommend this book. Tracey Spiller Senior Skills Manager
Our next recommended read is...
‘Range: How Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World’ by David Epstein. This book is a powerful argument for how to succeed in any field. Whether you are a teacher, student, scientist, business analyst, parent, job hunter, retiree, you will see the world differently after you've read this book.
Want to take part in our next book club?
Books are free for the first 50 staff who request a copy and could count towards your CPD hours (subject to suitability). Request your copy by emailing bookclub@acttraining.org.uk by Friday 7th February.
