important things you need to know... for pupils, and our beneficial partnerships with local authorities. The full report findings can be found here.
ESTYN UPDATE ACT We are delighted to report that our provisional judgements from Estyn on our Work Based Learning inspection are really ‘good’ across the board. This is just the result we needed to support our ambitious plans for the future. We very much appreciate how hard everyone has worked - particular thanks also have to go to the Quality Team, especially Kath Wing, for leading and supporting everyone. A huge thanks also to everyone who was observed or participated in meetings with the inspectors. The report won’t be finalised until May so please can we ask you not to share the judgements outside the organisation until it has been officially released.
Commenting on the results of the report, Kelly Rowlands, Senior Schools Provision Manager said, “I couldn’t be prouder of what the team have achieved. The report is testament to the hard work they put in on a daily basis. For Estyn to recognise the emphasis we put on building strong positive relationships with our learners, both inside and beyond the classroom, is recognition that the effort is paying off!” On behalf of the ACT Board we would like to say a massive thank you and congratulations to everyone in the organisation for both of these really positive Estyn outcomes. To celebrate our success we would like to announce an extra day’s leave this year on Thursday 18th April.

WORKING WALES
We are also incredibly proud to share that following on from Estyn’s inspection of our Schools provision in December 2018, a number of strengths have been identified. The impressive feedback focussed on the great quality of teaching delivered by the Schools team. It also called attention to our sharing of best practice, clear direction for improving provision and outcomes
The Welsh Government has informed us of their decision to postpone the current procurement exercise for Working Wales and restart the process later in the year. It appears that there have been legitimate challenges to their evaluation methodology.

Whilst this further delay is frustrating given the time and effort we have put in, it is nothing for us to worry about. The current Traineeship programme will continue and we will receive a contract extension – so we just need to carry on doing the brilliant job we’re already doing. We will let you know as soon as we have more information.

NEWPORT AND CAERPHILLY CENTRE UPDATES Our new Caerphilly Centre is due to open on 7th May 2019, with our Caerphilly staff and learners (who have temporarily been based at the Blackwood Centre) excited and ready to move into the additional space and improved facilities.
What is Sport & Social Club about? We communicate with one another everyday via email and on the phone but oftentimes don’t know the face from the name. The club acts as an opportunity for staff from all centres to socialise in a variety of ways.
Alongside this, we have chosen not to renew the lease for our Newport Centre. As such, we will be relocating the current Newport team and learners to Caerphilly, with both teams joining forces and working together to open and develop the new Caerphilly centre. Many thanks to all staff in the region, who are currently working hard to ensure a smooth transition for learners and move to the new premises.
What we’re trying to do? We hope to encourage staff and centre participation in a number of different activities that can be run locally to make it as accessible as possible for everyone. We’re also hoping to promote and arrange volunteering days and raise money for various charities. We intend

digital transformation
One of our ongoing strategies as a company is to become even more innovative with our use of digital technology to improve processes, learner experience and data management across our provision. Our new Systems Development Team are spearheading this drive to ensure ACT become sector leaders in digital advancement using exciting emerging technologies.
a suspicious email, asking staff to update their password and recorded how many people clicked the link and how many entered their password. 1 in 5 staff members entered their password and nearly half clicked the link. We are hoping to get 100% of staff to successfully recognise bogus emails and not click on risky links moving forwards. We will soon be creating mandatory training for all staff to raise awareness around this important subject. In the meantime, search the CAT method!
An example of this is a new ACT mobile app, ACT ID, which will soon be released on the IOS app store and the Android play store. The app will enable new learners to securely upload their personal identity documents and fast track their ACT registration. The Systems Development Team have also made it possible for learners to apply online, with a digital application which can be processed faster than ever before. Once complete, the Onefile and WEST learner accounts are automatically created.
VISITOR SIGN-IN APP Joe Pilgrim and Sam Kirkby from the Systems Development Team have designed a new visitor app for the OPH reception. An email will now automatically be sent to staff from the App to notify them when visitors have arrived. Please ensure any visitors that you have attending OPH have a point of contact, to avoid other staff receiving unnecessary alerts.
Commenting on these developments, Systems Developer Sam Robson-Davis said, “We are all really excited about the projects and improvements we’re working on. It can be challenging at times, but knowing we are helping to improve the learner experience makes it all worthwhile.”
PHISHING TEST We recently conducted a phishing test across ACT to gauge staff knowledge on this important subject. On the 14th of January, we sent out

Who are you and what’s your role? My name is Rebecca Cooper and I am Head of People & Development for ACT Training. What are you responsible for? Overseeing Human Resources, Payroll & Expenses and Staff Learning & Development for ACT and ALS Training. What are your plans for the future of ACT? To continue to grow and develop ACT as a learnerfocussed organisation, with a very strong employer brand in Wales. I would really like to see us in the Top 50 of the Times Top 100 companies to work for in the UK (last year we were 59th and this year we were 72nd), as well as an Investors in People Platinum organisation (we are currently Gold). There are some areas we need to focus on to get there and honest staff feedback is key to us identifying areas where we can improve. My door is always open to anyone who has ideas or suggestions or just wants a chat about any concerns they may have. What’s the biggest challenge your team faces? There are many challenges for the year ahead, but some of
9
the biggest we face will be the introduction of a digital staff performance management process, rolling out during the summer of 2019. Other challenges include continuing to embed a coaching culture throughout the organisation, as well as reviewing and improving opportunities for staff learning, development and CPD. What is your proudest moment at ACT? I’ve had many in my 15 years with ACT but a few that come to mind are: ACT being awarded the biggest ever Work Based Learning contract in Wales in 2011, every time we’ve gained a place in the Times Top 100 companies to work for, when ACT were named as 7th best Investors in People Gold organisation in the UK (2017) and of course when I won an award for Best HR Professional in the Education sector at the Wales HR Awards in 2017. Tell us something we wouldn’t know about you? I was born in Canada after my parents emigrated there for 10 years. We returned to Wales when I was 3 and I haven’t been back, although I do plan to one day.

Our Marketing and Communications Team held a coffee morning at Little Man Coffee in Cardiff on 7th March. They invited potential employers to a free breakfast and coffee tasting session to discover and discuss the benefits that Apprentices can have on their business and the wider
economy. The event which was hosted by our Skills Ambassador Jonathan Davies saw a variety of interested employers attend and was a great success. You can read more here.
MINISTER VISITS MOLSON COORS On 4th March the Minister for Economy and Transport Ken Skates AM visited our employer Molson Coors. In addition to being given a tour of the site, the Minister met some of their Apprentices who had recently completed their ILM Level 3 and

5* RATING FOR OPH CAFÉ Congratulations to the OPH Café team who recently achieved a 5* hygiene rating. A massive well done to you all for the delicious food you make and brilliant service. Keep up the fantastic work.
HEALTH & WELL-BEING EXERCISES As part of ACT’s commitment to improving staff well-being, we have recently introduced a workplace well-being calendar. In February the topic of the month was ‘Exercise’ and staff
were encouraged to take part in a fitness challenge and share their experiences. Sarah Nightingale, Management Higher Apprenticeship Assessor. “I always played or coached sport since childhood, but then as an adult when I started working and coaching hockey at club and international level, ironically exercise for myself became tricky to fit in. I found I was really missing taking part in a team sport but was wary as my injuries meant I couldn’t run too much. I was pleased to discover walking
15
netball, which may conjure up visions of a gentle stroll around a netball court but it’s amazing just how fast you can walk and how physical and fun it can be. More than just a physical boost, exercise has a huge mental and emotional impact on me. It also gives me time away from every day stressors and increases your social circle. It took courage for me to get my sporting kit on again and walk into a sports hall of strangers, but I am so pleased I did. I encourage everyone to get out there and get their body moving!

Every issue we will interview a different partner to shine a light on the work they do. This time we spoke to Simon Stephens from Cardiff City FC Community Foundation. improving their confidence and attitude to support them to make their next steps. At Level 1 the learners work towards completion of a BTEC Level One in Sport & Active Leisure qualification. This sets them up nicely to progress onto the BTEC Level 2 in Sport, and we have a number of learners that make this move.

Cheyenne struggled to settle in to mainstream education and suffered with social anxiety. After attending three different high schools and being home schooled for a period, her Mum decided that school wasn't the path for her. After speaking to Careers Wales, Cheyenne enrolled onto our 24week Traineeship Programme and learnt about the range of educational courses we offer. She studied with the Foundation up until the end of her BTEC Level 3 studies where she completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport. She was also Head Girl for the programme from 2017 and has represented the Foundation at a number of events, sharing her remarkable story with stakeholders. Cheyenne has progressed onto Swansea University where she studies Criminology and Criminal Justice, but still regularly supports the Foundation at events.
The Foundation focuses on three key outcomes: • I mproving people’s understanding of how to lead healthier and more active lives • I mproving opportunities to access education and employment opportunities • R educing the likelihood of offending and re-offending This is achieved across our activity areas: • Early years and primary development • Post 16 education, employability and training • C ommunity projects focussing on community safety, health projects and disability projects

book club
Last issue, our recommended read was ‘Work Like a Woman: A Manifesto For Change’ by Mary Portas. Thank you to everyone who got on board with the book club, ordered a copy and read the book. Below is some of the feedback we received: “This book really made me think about office culture and the world of work from a different perspective. Portas calls the book her ‘manifesto for change’, and she brings lots of great ideas to the table about how we can create a more inclusive, flexible and intuitive work culture for everyone. After all, we do spend the majority of our time at work so it’s in everyone’s interest to make it great. She writes with style, humour and authenticity,
as she asks businesses to move away from a ruthless, alpha culture and encourages everyone to stop trying to ‘fit in’ and be their true selves at work. She lays out an eloquently crafted case for her manifesto, backed up by statistics I found quite shocking (prepare to be enraged), as well as anecdotes from her own experiences in retail. Its title is ‘Work like a Woman’ but I would recommend it to anyone.” SARAH DAW
Our next recommended read is ... ‘Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman’ by Yvon Chouinard. In his long-awaited memoir, the legendary climber, businessman, environmentalist, and founder of Patagonia, Inc. shares the persistence and courage that have gone into being head of one of the most respected and environmentally responsible companies on earth.

staff in the

This month we put the spotlight on Alan Johnson, who joined ACT in November 2017. Alan works as a Cleaning Operative at our OPH, Newport and Blackwood sites.
20
insight
Tell us a little bit about your role, and what your average day looks like.
Where is the best place you have travelled to?
What would be your top tip for colleagues?
I’m a Cleaning Operative for ACT and I sometimes help out John Hayward with the carpark lodge at OPH too. I basically make sure that the ACT buildings look nice and clean.
We live in a beautiful world. There’s loads of places I can think of, but I love Thailand. I think a lot of people do. The West Indies and Africa is beautiful too but I think the whole world is beautiful.
What is the most rewarding part of your current role?
What was the last album you listened to?
There’s a million different cheesy one liners I could say but the most important one I think is to just be kind. Appreciate the whole world and be compassionate and not judgemental. You never know what someone else is going through. Like Bob Marley said “One Love!”
For me it’s working with and being around good people. ACT is a great company to work for. I’ve worked many different jobs at a lot of places and this is just a lovely, laid back place with a good atmosphere. I used to be an Account Manager for a massive commercial cleaning company and I had 82 sites to manage and all the staff. It was really stressful. Now I work here and my life is a lot more chilled.
I listen to music all the time. It’s always been a huge part of my life. I love all music. I grew up with Glam Rock bands like T-Rex and used to do a lot with punk bands back in the day. I listen to new and old stuff all the time but I think the last album I bought was Anthony and the Johnsons who won the Mercury Awards a couple of years ago.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself… I used to be in a band called Three Wize Men, so I’ve done a couple of world tours with bands. We used to be signed to Depeche Mode’s label, Mute Records. I’ve also done loads of TV work as a walk-on for shows like Eastenders and The Bill. I even did adverts like The Tango Ad. I’ve done all kinds of stuff!
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had? There are no worse jobs. There are just experiences! How do you like to spend your time when you’re not working? I still live in London. It’s where my life is and all my family. These days it’s really not that long to drive back over the weekend. I’ve got a place in the Heath that I live in during the week but I’m always back and forth between the two.
21
Finally, how did you feel to win the Staff Recognition Award? I was genuinely surprised as I’d not been here that long but I was so pleased. It was really nice to get that acknowledgement, but everyone works hard here so I feel like I won that award for everybody. I’m just me doing my thing and I enjoy making people smile! A big thank you to Alan for taking the time to answer our questions this month. If you would like to feature in our Staff in the Spotlight section, or have a colleague you’d like to put forward, please e-mail Rachael Lewis.
