Coming up: ACUI I-LEAD®
ACUI's Institue for Leadership Education and Development (I-LEAD®) is the Association's premiere student leadership development program. Below, we feature a testimonial from a 2018 I-LEAD® attendee, Ray Stewart (Truman State University).
Why did you want to attend I-LEAD®? I wanted to attend I-LEAD® because I started to consider a career in student affairs and wanted to develop the necessary leadership skills. I also went because I wanted to improve my ability to lead students and knew that an ACUI conference would be one of the best places to do that. How did this event have an impact on your college career? I-LEAD® allowed space to reflect on my leadership around a group of people who were having similar experiences. The opportunity to learn and trade skills with people from colleges across the country helped me become a better campus advocate. It also showed me that a career in student affairs is something worth pursuing. What is one thing you learned from your I-LEAD® experience? My favorite lesson from I-LEAD® was how to balance being a campus leader and a healthy person. Sometimes our involvement takes too much of our time and I-LEAD® encouraged me to develop a much needed plan for self-care. What was something you didn’t expect about the experience, but loved? There was intentional focus on diversity and inclusion that I had not expected. We consistently discussed related issues and I was allowed to share my experience without feeling like a token. This allowed me to form a community with a couple dozen campus leaders of color whom I still keep in contact and support today. Any advice for other students who are considering getting involved with ACUI? Keep an open mind and remember not all experiences are your own as ACUI will push to critically think.
Interested in sending your student(s) to I-LEAD®? This year's I-LEAD® takes place July 21-26 at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. Visit the ACUI website for more information and to register your students!
