LETTER FROM THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR

Hello, Region II friends! I hope you survived the spring semester with all due aplomb. In what has been an interesting (and often too-quiet) year, I found that the spring surge in events and activity in our facility was, while still not at the usual levels, very welcome by myself and our staff. Seeing a *hope* that something that feels closer-to-normal may be on the horizon was enough to energize us to get through the end of the academic year with enthusiasm and a focus on the future. While summer will still look and feel different, I am greatly encouraged by what I see. The students seem equally eager to leave the masks and distancing behind – some overly eager, perhaps – but I can certainly commiserate. I recently took a small trip to Florida with my family – some of whom I hadn’t gotten to see in quite some time. We were all vaccinated (except the young children), mostly stayed in the condo and by ourselves on the beach, played in the pool, and got some much-needed family time together. Reflecting on that joy, I find myself in need of much the same with my ACUI family. I miss our gatherings, our group conversations, our meals together, our in-person experiences. My hope is that our continued progress as institutions – and as society – to get as many people vaccinated as possible will help return those joys to our lives. For our part, Region II has been hard at work. We have a hefty slate of summer programs and events to engage you and your team in new kinds of learning. We will focus on student workers, equity and inclusion, and our transitions to post-COVID operations. We are hard at work building an October regional conference (with a twist!) that is equal parts accessible, developmental, and engaging. And of course, we remain committed to our members – should you have any ideas, concerns, or questions, the entire Regional Leadership Team remains here to serve. It’s my hope that we all get some rest this summer, and that the fall brings greater joy than expected. Let’s make it happen, together.
