REGIONAL DIRECTOR
Hola Mi Gente,I am excited. Maybe it's because I survived a very tough school year or, possibly, it’s because I went on a much need vacation While I think it is a combination of the two, I am really excited for this summer.
The summer brought a lot of hope. While much of it brings the sun and thoughts of why we even do what we do, there is always a calm bliss before things get back to the normal pace of busyness that our profession provides us With that comes the planning and the forecasting as we close out the previous year and that is where the fun begins because I know that this summer is more of a reset for many of us. We have new jobs, new colleagues, or perhaps involved in the hiring process in some way. It is a new beginning. We made it through that dark tunnel of lofty expectations with little to no staff to (hopefully) a place where we can begin the planning process for change.
So I encourage you to take a step back and reflect on the changes that this academic year will bring and be mindful of opportunities that may come across your path Change is a good thing when you embrace the challenges that come with it.

WRITTEN BY: CHRISSIE KING RUTGERS UNIVERSITY CAMDEN STUDENT INVOLVEMENT COORDINATOROn behalf of the Regional Leadership Team, I would like to send a HUGE shout out to our recent graduating Student Member, Mustafa Abdus Sabuur. Mustafa joined the Regional Leadership Team in March 2021 as a graduate student from Rowan University. Although Mustafa joined in uncertain times, he jumped head first into the Student Member position and quickly became an essential part of the Regional Leadership Team. Mustafa has brought amazing ideas to our team, including helping to create the Region VII Discord, planning our first E-Sports Invitational, and working on gathering research on how to better include students in the ACUI website.
Mustafa exudes all of the ACUI values and has been a joy to work with. I always looked forward to our bi-weekly meetings where we would feed off of each other’s energy, create humongous tasks lists and always have a great time. Know that no matter where he lands in our higher education field, he will create great things. Thank you Mustafa for all of your love, dedication, excitement, and energy that you have brought to the team this past year and a half. You will be missed!!!
Congratulations
WRITTEN BY: MEG O'SULLIVANRegion VII is so proud of one of our outstanding volunteers! Sharon (Chickie) Silverstein, Director of Campus Activities and Student Leadership Development, from Suffolk County Community College was honored at the Annual Conference in Chicago as a recipient of the ACUI Legacy Award. She has a long and distinguished career in the field and as an ACUI Volunteer where she has served as a volunteer both on the regional and international level. Although she has served on the Board of Trustees and Conference planning teams, she is probably best known for her College Bowl contributions. “Passionate, loyal, ambassador, champion for all students, fun, motivated, caring, role model, positive legacy, advocate, leader, humble, engaging, loving, dedicated, friend, special, mentor, appreciative, committed” are just some of the words and phrases used to describe our recipient. In a letter of nomination this person was described as “the epitome of what this award represents.” Another wrote, “She was one of the first people I met at ACUI, and she was so welcoming to me and so many others, I can think of no other colleague more deserving.” Sharon was so loved and respected that over 80 colleagues, friends and students raised money on her behalf for scholarships for the Education and Research Fund. Please join Region VII in congratulating one of our own, Sharon “Chickie” Silverstein of Suffolk County Community College a 2022 Legacy Leader.
GRAD & GROW
My name is Alexis Robinson and I am a current graduate student studying Higher Education: Administration at Rowan University. Along with obtaining my masters degree, I am also the Graduate Coordinator of Marketing for the Chamberlain Student Center and Campus Activities. This past July, I was able to attend the very first ever, Grad and Grow Institute through ACUI. During the virtual conference, I was able to connect and network with other graduate students while attending relevant sessions that helped me develop my skills and career within student affairs. What I enjoyed most about the conference was networking with other graduate students around the country. As a first year graduate student and someone who has never attended a conference, I went into this feeling very intimidated. I commend Antonio Talamo, Chrissie King, and all of the other graduate students for their efforts in making the Zoom room a comforting and supportive space. The advice I was able to receive from second year graduate students has been able to assist me in my current role as the Marketing Graduate Coordinator at the SCCA. Not only was I able to walk away from this experience with new connections within higher education, I was able to explore my why. I was enlightened to hear the attendees share their ‘why’. It has inspired me to recognize my ‘why’ more often throughout the work week. Grad and Grow Institute has helped me grow into a better employee, supervisor, and student. It came around as a full circle when I was able to take all of the skills and perspectives I learned at the conference and apply them to my life the very next day. I am extremely grateful that I was able to attend this conference and plan on staying in touch with the attendees in the future.
