Message from the Director Welcome to Region V Every month, I have a standing date with my sisters and their families. One night a month, we get together to eat, hang out, and reconnect with each other. Each month I look forward to this evening because I know it will be filled with giggles from my two year old nephew, comments from my funny the director and awkwardFrom teenage nephews, or a trip down memory lane with my sisters. As I think about this dinner, I wonder why it brings so much joy. This simple event that started as a birthday get-together has slowly turned into a tradition; a tradition that brings me comfort and makes me feel at home with the world. Thinking about the start of something new reminds me the importance of traditions and how they keep us grounded. In Orlando we participated in the old tradition of Battle of the Regions, and although we didn’t win, we did give the other regions a run for their money. We also participated in the new tradition of the Annual Meeting of the Delegates. As I walked in carrying our banner and turned to see everyone with arms stretched over their heads making a V, I got goosebumps. Right then and there, we started something. It is an exciting time for the region as we have planted the seeds and are beginning to grow. As the regional director, it is my goal to be working with the Regional Leadership Team and you, the members, to create traditions that embrace the membership. These traditions will provide a comfort and a sense of pride as we continue to make Region V the best we can. Over the last six months, your Regional Leadership Team has been working hard to create special programs and services that will set us apart from the other regions. In Orlando, we unveiled the Region V Values: innovation, fiscal responsibility, connections, educational resources, and inclusivity. It is our goal to pass on the importance of these values as each leadership team assembles for the first time. I am honored to be the first director for Region V. As our roots spread and create a foundation that reflects our values, I, along with the Regional Leadership Team, will continue implementing new initiatives that will make us unique and give members the comfort and strength we all look for in our association, another tradition we can be proud of.

ACUI Region V Newsletter Edition 1

The 94th ACUI annual conference lived up to its billing, The Celebration! This year’s conference was at the beautiful JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes in Orlando. There was a total of 1,456 attendees, of which 1,100 were delegates, to celebrate ACUI’s 100th Anniversary. While it wasn’t the beginning of the first day on Sunday, there was dedicated time to meet as a whole with our new region, Region V. The regional meeting was exciting to combine with colleagues from many former regions and build excitement for our new region. At the regional meeting the Battle of the Region volunteers were solidified. There were 18 volunteers to compete in the following events: ACUI Idol, ACUI Spelling Bee, Sand Volleyball, Race against the Current, and ACUI Poetry Slam. The 18 volunteers were from 15 different member institutions. A big thank you is owed to those who volunteered to represent the first competition as Region V! There were other components to the final Battle of the Region standings including Dance of the Decades, silent auction items, volunteering at the conference and also Education and Research Fund components including the FUNd Run/Walk and the Lazy River Duck Race. In the Duck Race Region V took home first and third place, no one beats our rubber ducks! Other Region V highlights include a wonderful regional dinner on Tuesday night and a new tradition of walking in as a region with the Region V flag for the ACUI meeting of the delegates and induction of the leaders Wednesday. One of my personal highlights was the conference-wide community service project Tuesday morning. There was a tremendous amount of energy among the 800+ volunteers helping build over 10,000 hygiene kits for Clean the World. Other highlights from ACUI Orlando include: tremendous keynotes from Jeff Selingo and Laura Ling; a very informative Campus Leaders Panel including senior campus leaders; and a real window into ACUI’s history with the 100th Anniversary Museum. This conference marked my first annual conference and really set the bar high for future conference expectations.
