Message from the Director In the Skutt Student Center, here at Creighton University, we have eight banners hanging from our railings year round. Each of these banners states one of the Ignatian values, which Creighton University has adopted into our core curriculum of education. Recently, we decided to update the banners as the university adopted two more of the Ignatian values going from six to eight. I feel it is very unique to have these banners hang in our student center and I take great pride in them (Even though there was a mistake on one banner! Finding Good in All Things is not the same as Finding God in All Things!) The other day as I wandered the building, I stopped and looked at the banners and one of them got me thinking. In a Jesuit Education, we value reflection and discernment. Reflection is a process of exploring our experience, so that we can recognize and express what we are experiencing. We want to help our students reflect, because reflection is essential to learning. On the faith level, we reflect because God speaks to us in our hearts. If we don’t know what is going on in our hearts, we can’t hear what God is saying in us. Seeing the words “reflection and discernment” invoked thoughts about ACUI and the past year we have had as an association and as Region V. Just last month, we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of ACUI, and just a few From the director days ago, we celebrate the first year of Region V. If you had the pleasure of going to Orlando last April, the conference provided many options to reflect on the past 100 years. You were able to walk through a museum outlining the history of ACUI and see the power and influence this association has had on the college union profession. Along with the museum, we celebrated the anniversary with a gala that reflected on the legends and pioneers of ACUI and those who made the association what it is today. As I experienced these great stories come alive again at the museum or at the gala, I couldn’t help but think about what our role will be in making the association even better. For Region V, it’s been a great year full of successes and challenges. This year we are given the challenge to create—not from scratch, but through carefully analyzing the past and reflecting on where we are coming from and going to. As I reflect back on our first meeting together, we had lots of ideas and many of them became a reality. We were innovative in providing education through a multi-site education program held at Macalester College and Elmhurst College at the same time. We connected our region through this newsletter to build a better understanding of the region. The team worked hard to make sure that programs were fiscally capable and made sure the region remained fiscally responsible. Lastly, we held a conference that was full of great education sessions, keynotes, and opportunities to connect with colleagues and continue our development. This past year has been a time to pave new roads and lay the groundwork for the foundation of a new region, sprung forth from the experiences, the decisions, and the hard work of those who have gone before us. However, if we do not take the time to reflect on where we have come from, we cannot see clearly into the future of where we are going. As we begin a new calendar year, we are reminded of the past year, we must embrace it, reflect on it, and learn from it. We cannot change it, but we can change the future, starting with today. Reflection is not merely living in the past, it is taking the past lessons and experiences and putting them toward a future of new ideas, growth, and endless possibilities. Happy New Year! I look forward to another year of connecting with all of you!

Region V Member Spotlight Director of the Centennial Student Union and Student Activities: Mark Constantine Email Address: mark.constantine@mnsu.edu Institution: Minnesota State University-Mankato Number of years at Minnesota State University-Mankato: Less than one year ACUI Involvement/Experiences: Institutional member since 1982 (Shippensburg University, University of Tennessee, College of William and Mary, Minnesota State University-Mankato). My major professional involvement was with the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) where I served on the Board of Directors for seven years and was the Chairperson of the Board. Areas of expertise: Human relations, programming, student development, contract negotiations, and team building. What are the most successful events or items you’ve implemented in your area of expertise? 1. Giving students opportunities to follow their passions, while providing guidance and support. 2. Developing a team atmosphere, while allowing staff the space they need to be successful. 3. Instituting and/or growing programming ideas that would later lead to new or stronger traditions. What were some of the challenges with implementing or creating the program, experience, policy, etc.? 1. Challenges come in many forms and styles. Most of them are surrounded by the human dimension, or the players who are involved. 2. Finances can often be a hurdle to overcome. My philosophy has always been if there is a great idea out there, money can be found using some creativity and by pooling resources. What is one piece of advice you would give to someone at another institution trying to implement a similar program, process, or policy? We are all in this together. No one person is better than another---stay humble. Students should be our number one priority. We should keep this in mind as we create policy, make decisions, and involve them in the daily life of the Union! How can other members gain more information on this topic? Call or email at any time. I would be more than happy to discuss any topic with a student affairs colleague.

Regional Conference Reflections First-Time Attendees: Meredithe Mimlitz & Stephanie Young, Elmhurst College As a first-time attendant and undergraduate student interested in pursuing a career in higher education and student affairs, the 2014 ACUI Region V Conference was a wonderful learning experience. By participating in educational sessions and networking with other professionals, we learned a lot about both our own institution, Elmhurst College, and about numerous other institutions. Attending the conference was a great experience where we were able to create relationships with student affairs professionals as well as other students interested in going into student affairs. One of the most influential parts of the ACUI Region V conference was hearing Tom Krieglstein speak. Tom’s keynote was very impactful to us because it really pushed us to think about why we are pursuing degrees in higher education and student affairs. When Tom asked us to imagine our “why behind the why” we came to the conclusion that we are pursuing these careers because of the great mentors that have made an impact on our lives. We attended the ACUI Region V conference with two of these amazing mentors. This made the conference experience that much more special. Overall, attending the ACUI Region V conference was an awesome experience that helped our professional development and inspired us to create personal goals. We were able to learn about student unions and foster relationships with professionals in the field all why affirming our dreams of working in Student Affairs. Thanks ACUI Region V for a great weekend!

Regional Conference Reflections Staff Perspective: Bill Tourville, Minnesota State University-Mankato The ACUI Region V conference was a very exciting time to meet new colleagues and have a fresh start to a new region. I was excited to see so many students attending the conference. I was proud to know that we were the only region to offer discounted registration for students. Being a foodie, I really enjoyed the food. Roast beef!!! With a new region comes some changes. As technology continues to become more important in our lives, both personally and professionally, I was happy to see the exclusive use of Guidebook for the conference. Not only was it a more sustainable, it reminded me how important using technology is for my position at Minnesota State-Mankato. As result, I’ve tried to use Twitter more often to better connect with the student body. Another change in the right direction was having many of out friends from Indiana join us this year. With fewer regions geography is bound to be challenge. It is nice to see regional permeability working. On the flip side, I wished I could have seen a few more of my friends from farther north and west. Braden we all missed your smile! ☺ This reminded me how important is to maintain those relationships outside of the conference. It so funny how a simple Facebook chat or phone call can really make your and the other person’s day. The greatest part of my job is having fun with students throughout the year. Advising a programming board can be a stressful and busy job, but when you are having fun everything becomes easier. I was reminded of this when receiving the New Professional Award. After the award, I reflected on how much I’ve done in my short time in the field. I could believe how much time I’ve put in, because it didn’t seem like I did that much. Then it dawned on me, I was having fun helping students create some great programs, watching them learn, and finding a second family in ACUI. I encourage everyone to never let the fun disappear. If you find yourself consistently not enjoying what you do, it might be time to take a step and inject some fun. The new region is bigger and better than ever with a lot of new features. Conversations with new colleagues in hallways and local watering holes are exciting. Seeing new institutions and ways of operating is always must. New educational programs throughout the year and more online programs will help us connect more. Even with all of new, I was happiest to see that the ACUI family culture is still first and foremost. It’s great to feel welcomed and appreciated from your peers. See you all Nov. 6-8 at the University of Minnesota Coffman Union.
