DESIGN PROJECTS Sokolniki Park Competition First Place Cooperation between Groundlab, Woohaus, and Urbanica Location: Moscow, Russia The project aimed to reactivate the 600-hectare Sokolniki park with dynamic activities while preserving its rich historical and natural resources by creating new all-season activities along the existing radial axis, reconstructing crossing points to create a pedestrian-friendly walking environment and incorporating identifiable way-finding design.

MAJOR RESEARCHES Developing between Formal and Informal: Reconstruction of Urban Village in Shenzhen, China Informal settlements, or “urban villages”, were characterized as one of the main obstacles of urban development in Shenzhen. However, these urban villages were actually an important support for the rapid modernization of the city in the 1980s. While many rules and policies failed to deal with the issues created by urban villages, this proposal suggests that the existing juxtaposition of formal and informal organizations of urban villages itself could be a tool to re-incorporate urban villages into the modern city.
Social Open Space under the Accumulation by Depression Regime in India Current conflict over land between land-owning farmers and property developers caused by the processes of global capitalism resulted in limiting local residents’ use of critically important open space. This research explores ways of designing and planning open space to economically sustain the local people, as well as build the sense of community belonging in Indian context.
Transformation of the Linear City of Soviet Union: Case Study of Miliutin’s Linear City of Stalingrad This research examines the transformation of the Linear City from its original version in the capitalist Spain to the Socialist Soviet Union before the Stalin period. The transformation of the city form indicated that the Linear City, usually served for efficiency, was a temporary product of the city development under highly economic and political control from central authorities.

Gay Tourism in Hong Kong

The widespread idea of “gay” in Western countries encouraged Hong Kong to develop as a new destination for gay tourism for homosexuals both from the West and the East. This paper explains the specific socio-geographical conditions for Hong Kong to develop its gay consumption through the transferable concepts of the city as “public space” and “private space” to foreign tourists and the local people.

Urban Village in Guangdong Province, China: City Sprawl under High Modernism and Equity Approach

Urban sprawl was a reason that urban villages emerged during the High Modernism period in China, which focused on high GDP growth. It resulted in the redevelopment of the urban villages when the governments adopted the Equity Approach. This research suggests that alternative strategies such as Local Economic Development and participatory approaches should be involved to stop the vicious spiral of urban sprawl developed from resolving the issue of urban villages.
