to create in a new way. It is much more than simply creating products, and

transcends the physical. It is my goal to discover these things, to help others along the way, and better the world around us.

My name is Adam Baker.

EXPERIENCE

As intern at the Community Design Center of Rochester, I spent the summer developing base maps for a vision plan project for the Ibero community within the city. The community would hold a design charrette in October 2015. My co-intern and I developed our own vision plan project which we completed in under two weeks.

PROJECT D

My fellow intern and I were given free reign of our project. After working with the Ibero community, we focused on a specific feature that made this community stand out. We focused on the El Camino trail, a public walkway that connects this urban community. This unique feature was introduced less than a decade ago, but has not been maintained well. We desired to make this trail a destination for people from other parts of the city, as well as those outside the city. This is a summation of our 2-week project.

DESIGN

AVENUE C SEATING C is the scientific term for the speed of light, so it seemed fitting that Avenue C would be themed “light.” We adapted the C from the CSX logo.

BOARD DESIGN

El Camino Generations Project Design Concept

After developing our designs for the intersections, we developed our presentation board which laid out the premise of the project. This had to fit within the design language of prior boards and be cohesive.

The El Camino Trail runs through the Northeast Quadrant of Rochester in an abandoned CSX railroad bed. Currently, the El Camino Trail is a path through the neighborhood connecting communities from Clifford Avenue to Avenue D and beyond. The “El Camino Generations Project” will aim to promote the public realm, encourage community interaction, and generate an active lifestyle. This will be achieved through interactive and sustainable infrastructure such as seating and fountains, as well as clear and comprehensive signage. There are three stages of implementation:

Stage 1 1. Major Gateways and Seating

• The major gateways are entry points to the trail, including Avenues A, B, C, D, and Clifford Avenue. The appearance of these gateways is an important element to attract potential users of the trail from both within as well as outside the community. Large sculptures and interactive seating would generate public interest and attract picture taking and sharing.

LOGO DESIGN

2. Waste and Recycle Deposit

• There is a large amount of litter and waste along the trail, that could be mitigated by an updated waste and recycling deposit system. Interactive or creative waste deposit receptacles would discourage litter and encourage an attitude of civic pride and a litter-free environment.

3. Privacy Hedges

• Privacy is a major concern for residents along the trail. Current screening devices such as shrubs and fencing are in poor condition and do not allow for safety.

4. Signage

• The signage for the trail at all of the major gateways is in poor condition or missing. We suggest an updated logo and bollard design that is attractive as well as a way to display information in a non-removable package. Motor vehicles, including motorcycles, are not allowed on the trail except for emergency situations. The current signage is not clear as to what is or is not allowed and should be updated to include imagery to show the types of vehicles that do not have access. Historic markers could be added to educate about the heritage of the area.

We also developed a new logo that we adapted from the old logo. This new logo better showed the trail layout and also indicated the different intersection points.

5. Lighting

• Although the trail is not to be used at night, lighting at the major gateways is important in adding to the safety along nearby streets and sidewalks. This discourages criminal activity on the trail and also creates a safe place to rest for pedestrians passing by after dark.

Stage 2 1. Sculpture Garden

• A sculpture garden would be installed at the Conkey Avenue Park in a currently unused grass area. Not only would it attract trail users, it could be used as a rest area and an opportunity to generate public interest. Members of the community could submit their work for periodic displays throughout the year.

2. Minor Gateways

• The only current minor gateway is off of Conkey Avenue directly across from Nielsen Street. Empty lots along the trail could be utilized in the same way creating a pedestrian path and could feature signage coordinated with that installed at the major gateways. These minor gateways allow for easier access throughout the community and a safer way for people to travel throughout the neighborhood.

Stage 3 1. Permeable Pavement

• The trail is currently covered with loose gravel. Permeable pavement allows rainwater to enter the ground and naturally filter any runoff, is more interesting, and provides a permanent solution.

2. Extension Over Bridge

• The trail runs on an abandoned CSX railroad route which previously extended across the Genesee River. The trestle bridge across the river exists, but is not currently in use. A revitalized trestle bridge would be an interesting destination for gatherings such as picnics, activities, field trips, and other events. With its spectacular views, this would be a beautiful location to inspire users and generate public interest.

Additional Benefits Economic

• Volunteer and possibly paid positions could be offered for trail gardening and maintenance. This would be a catalyst for community participation and “ownership” of the trail.

Historic

• The community will be made aware of the history of the trail and community heritage through attractive contemporary markers. The historic trail markers would be useful for field trips for school children.

Sustainability • Environmentally sensitive design practices will require minimal non-renewable energy for maximum profit.

HISTORY

CUNNINGHAM The Cunningham Coach Building company started in Rochester, NY in 1842 under James Cunningham. After decades of being a worldrenowned carriage and hearse producer, Cunningham’s descendants began to produce automobiles. The first vehicles they experimented with were electric vehicles, but they eventually only produced gasoline-powered cars. Cunningham’s first production cars arrived in 1907. The company was building cars fully in-house by 1910. In 1916, they introduced America’s largest V8, which was a 442 cubic inch, 90 horsepower monster. This engine was placed in the V-Series cars, which were the premier American luxury cars of the time, comparable or higher-end than Rolls-Royce. The V-series speedster set an American speed record for a stock vehicle at over 98MPH in 1919. Cunningham was going strong. 1919 and 1920 combined to be the two best years in the history of the company, with over $3.2M of vehicles produced in 1920 alone.

KEYS Hand-built Luxury Reliability Leading Innovator

HISTORY

1920 V3 SPEEDSTER The company failed to innovate during and after the Depression, and they ceased producing their own cars in 1931. They worked on military contracts and also produced some airplanes. They mostly built custom car bodies for Ford, Buick, and other manufacturers during this time. They ceased these operations in 1937, and eventually became an industrial manufacturer. They were bought out by Gleason Works in Rochester in 1968, and ceased all operations in 1977. There are roughly 80 Cunninghams left in existence, with one being owned by notorious car enthusiast Jay Leno. I spoke with Jay on the phone, and he provided wonderful insight about his car. These pictures are of one of the finest remaining examples from Cunningham, currently located at the Revs Institute in Collins, Florida.
