SURRY HILLS PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL AND TRAM STOP BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, SYDNEY
PROJECT YEAR LOCATION PROJECT PRIZES
2013 SURRY HILLS, SYDNEY - AIA 2013 NSW GRADUATE AWARD - TNSW CBD & STH EAST TRAM LINE COMPETITION
The project scheme proposed recognises the cultural boom in which Sydney is projected to experience based on the NSW Government’s 2030 plan. The new tram line becomes an infrastructural spine across Sydney, positioning itself within the centre of the city’s most recognised and celebrated cultural institutions, forming an asset to Sydney’s international and national identity. The Surry Hills/Ward Park Performing Arts School plays a key role as a central stop within this cultural spine, driving towards the experimental performance education in its endeavour to strengthen resilience to Sydney’s future active and lively lifestyle. The object as architecture becomes the morphological identity within the scheme, the distribution of the lantern-like buildings not only becoming a strategy to house large masses of people within an event, but to naturally create a public realm pocketed on the tram line. The scale of the context begins to have a conversation with the distributed volumes as its positioning and porosity informs a memorable rather than dominating architecture.

INTERN CULTURE PROJECT YEAR PROJECT TEAM
ONGOING SINCE 2014 JOHN KANG
Part of a larger ongoing research project exploring the potential impact of Danish social and architectural culture towards other cities
A research based project investigating the relationship between internships and education within architecture. The research presented draws from the experiences from John and I who worked in Copenhagen during our Masters degree. In today’s current architectural world, the debate surrounding the question - is education within institutions preparing students for the realities of the architectural practice? is at its high. As a result, we aim to uncover the benefits for participating in internships whilst studying, posing the question – how does learning on a first hand basis, ie internships, become more beneficial and applicable to a student’s education and their understanding of architecture and its influences on a larger scale? With large discussions surrounding the value of internships to both the industry and the development of young aspiring students, we will look at that interning culture across 3 case studies – Copenhagen, Tokyo and Sydney (Denmark and Japan being the forefronts of todays architectural industry and ambassadors of intern cultures). Based on these case studies, thematic lenses -The Policies, The Education and The Internship- will be applied to uncover the different levels of acceptance, structure and opportunity for interning within each city through objective and subjective data.

THE TURM GLOBAL EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP TU DELFT UNIVERSITY, NETHERLANDS
PROJECT YEAR LOCATION
2013 HOMBROICH, GERMANY
The research paper uses a combination of sketches, text and photography as a tool for uncovering the theme of expression through form, structure, materiality and space. Museum Insel Hombroich is a cultural hub located on the outskirts of Dusseldorf, Germany, in the North Rhine Westphalia. Identified by its unique cluster of 12 pavilions in the minx of forestry, rivers and wildlife, the museum park exemplifies the strong relationship between art, nature, users and architecture. Using The Turm pavillion as a precedent, the project aims to uncover the elements that create the spatial playfulness of the bare ‘artless’ space. The pavillons act as walk in sculptures, choregraphing both the visitor’s movement and their direction of gaze.

MARINTIME EDUCATION CENTRE MALMØ NORD ARCHITECTS COPENHAGEN
PROJECT STATUS LOCATION PROJECT ROLE
2014 | 1ST PRIZE INVITED COMPETITION MALMØ, SWEEDEN DESIGN TEAM MEMBER, LEAD MODEL BUILDER
Completed with NORD, the winning proposal merges indoor and outdoor spaces under an expansive, punctured roof - creating an engaging and inspiring learning landscape on the coast of Øresund. The education centre is immersed in 3,000 square metres of landscaping, including small ponds and plantings that mimic an assortment of marine ecologies and create an engaging learning landscape that allows visitors to have a hands-on experience of nature. Large sections of glazing concertina back and forth, connecting the facade with the coast. A series of small triangular fins and sky lights draw light to the rooms below. In the landscape users will find floating laboratories on small removable pontoons, teaching signs on the seabed, viewing platforms and underwater sea binoculars. Visualisations : Pixelflakes

AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IN CARLSBERG CITY NORD ARCHITECTS COPENHAGEN
PROJECT STATUS LOCATION PROJECT ROLE COLLABORATORS
2015 | INVITED COMPETITION COPENHAGEN, DENMARK DESIGN TEAM MEMBER (NORD), LEAD FACADE DESIGNER VILHEIM LAURITZEN (VLA), BAM DK
Central to the Carlsberg City between old landmark buildings of high architectural quality is the European School - a modern response to the meaning of a school that architecturally refers to its surroundings. The school adapts to the district’s architecture and scale, expressing an obvious yet subtle division of smaller townhouses that is divided into the base, trunk and roof. The school is designed with large spatial variations that occurs in close interplay between inside and outside. Towards the Franciska Clausen area, the building opens towards the city in a playful learning landscape in several levels. The plaza draws from a strong architectural reference to the artist behind the name giving the area a special character and identity. As one of the several supporting institutions in the district, the European School school assists in creating a visible street life for play and learning and a community for children, the youth and their parents. The European School is not only an educational incubator, but a public mediator for the greater city. Welcome to the European School, a modern international public school and high school. MECHANICS OF VISUAL PERCEPTION PART OF SYDNEY ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL 2012
OFFICE FEUERMAN LLC
PROJECT STATUS LOCATION PROJECT ROLE
2012 | GALLERY EXHIBITION ULTIMO, SYDNEY DESIGN TEAM MEMBER, INSTALLATION
‘This was an exhibition which disoriented, distorted and disturbed, creating visual flux and imbalances. A series of reflections, moirés and vicious swathes of contorted lineworks on glass-plates hung from the ceiling.’ Blueprint Article Jan 2013 The installation demonstrates how perception becomes distorted by physiological changes. Office Feuerman principal, William Feuerman, used his personal experience following a stroke to graphically document his condition which affected the coordination of his eyes. The exhibition explores his neurological perceptual distortion resulting in artistic expressions which suggest new ways of seeing. The exhibition showcases a sample of work from a larger catalogue of collages, architectural diagrams and mappings, and visual installations, inwhich Feuerman investigates the mechanics between the body, mind, and environment.
