Judson University Athletics ... On the Rise! 2011 Season recap

The Judson University men’s soccer team had another successful season with 19 wins and went to their second straight NCCAA National Tournament. Finishing with a 19-4-1 recrord, they were ranked in the NAIA National Poll for eight straight weeks. Judson qualified for the NCCAA National Tournament and finished in third place after winning their 18th NCCAA Regional Tournament. They started the season off with a nine-match winning streak and a 13-match unbeaten streak dating back to the end of the 2009 season. The 8-0-1 start was just the third time under Burke that Judson had that strong of a start. They finished in third in the CCAC at 7-2-1 which is the first time in over seven years they did not win a CCAC regular season or tournament championship. They also defeated two top 25 teams in the first six games vs. #21 McKendree (2-1) and #25 Ashford University (2-0). The win over Ashford broke their 25-match unbeaten streak.

SENIORS

Five seniors leave the Judson program in 2010 in Alex Tyton, Rafa Heck, Matt Gloss, Cristiano Costa, and Sven Moeller. Tyton, Gloss, Costa, and Moeller were all three-year players while Heck played two years. Tyton, Heck, and Moeller all made the All-CCAC team in their time at Judson. The five seniors helped Judson to one CCAC Tournament Championship (2009), one CCAC regular season championship (2008), one NAIA National Tournament berth (2008), and two NCCAA National Tournaments (2009, 2010). Judson also won the 2009 NCCAA National Tournament.

Judson put together one of the tougher schedules in the nation and finished with a 19-4-1 record. In the final RPI standings, Judson finished 21st with a 0.566 rating. Judson played seven teams that were either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA National Poll. In the first seven matches, Judson played four teams that were ranked or receiving votes. Judson defeated #21 McKendree, 2-1, and #25 Ashford, 2-0. Mt. Vernon Nazarene (4-1) and Davenport University (2-1) both were receiving votes when Judson defeated them. In the CCAC, Judson faced Illinois Tech, twice, as they were receiving votes and then ranked #25. Judson also played Olivet Nazarene when they were receiving votes.

CCAC Awards

Three players earned All-CCAC status in 2010 with two first team selections and one second team selection. Alex Tyton and Rafa Heck were both on the first team while Mike Tobie made the second team. It was the third year in a row that Tyton had been voted a first-team selection and the fourth year he was an All-CCAC selection. It was the first time for both Heck

and Tobie to be named All-CCAC. Judson also had three athletes earn CCAC Player of the Week awards. Tyton led the way with the award by winning the defensive player of the week four times. For his career at Judson, Tyton won the player of the week nine times. Mike Tobie was the offensive player of the week, twice, while Martin Khoshaba won it once.

NCCAA AWARDS

Four players earned NCCAA All-Region awards in Corey Burke, Rafa Heck, Alex Tyton, and Mike Tobie. It was the first time for Burke, Heck, and Tobie to receive the award. Heck and Tyton were then voted onto the NCCAA All-American teams as Heck was a first-team selection and Tyton made the second team.

Three players earned a scholar-athlete award in 2010 for Judson University. Sven Moeller and Corey Burke were NAIA Scholar-Athletes while Moeller, Burke, and Rafa Heck made the NCCAA scholar-athlete team. It was the second year in a row for Moeller to be on both teams. Burke and Tyton was also named NCCAA National Player of Heck picked up the award for the first time. the Week twice for his play. It was the third and fourth time in his career to receive that award. Judson placed six players on the CCAC All-Academic team in Burke, Moeller, Heck, Matt Gloss, Joe Monahan, and Tom Kruse. He becomes the eighth player at Judson to be named a two-time NCCAA All-American joining Tom Ensign, Kelly Findley, Freddie King, Jason Acres, Marco Galvao, Pedro Figueiredo, and Steven Moldenhauer. Tyton had 11 shutouts this season and a 0.62 GAA. Also making the NCCAA All-American first-team was Rafa Heck. It was his first time to be an all-American. He was on the NCCAA All-Tournament, twice, though in 2009 and 2010.

Alex Tyton was one of the top goalies in the nation as he finished sixth in the NAIA in goals against average at 0.62. In the 2010 season, Judson was ranked in the NAIA Top 25 for eight of the 12 polls. Judson rose to as high as 16th in the nation on September 28th and was in the poll for eight consecutive weeks. They started off the season receiving votes and then made their first appearance in the September 7th poll. They fell out of the poll on November 2nd and was receiving votes through November 9th. In the final poll, they did not receive any votes at all. In all, Judson was mentioned in 11 of the 12 national polls.

Tyton leads nccaa

With 11 shutouts and a 0.62 goals against average, Tyton finished as the top goalie in the NCCAA. He finished 0.06 ahead of the second place goalie. Judson also had the top defense in the NCCAA with a 0.61 GAA. The next closest team was at 0.86.

CCAC Stats

Judson led the CCAC in three different categories in 2010. Judson was first in assists per game (1.75), goals allowed (15), and goals against average (0.61). Individually, Judson had several athletes in the top 10. Tyton led the CCAC in goals against average (0.62), shutouts (11), and shutouts per game (0.46). Mike To-
