Judson University Athletics ... On the Rise!

2010 RECAP

In the third year of the new program, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams continue to move forward. The 2010 season marked the first season that there was a separate men’s and women’s head coach. Joel Cotton took over the reigns for the women’s team while Rich Weinhandl continued with the men’s team.

Both teams ran competitive seasons and for the first time, ever, ran together at the NCCAA National Meet.

Both teams had their best finish at the Wisconsin Lutheran meeet where the women were fourth and the men were fifth. In the CCAC, both teams stayed even at where they were in 2009 as the women finished sixth and the men were seventh.

The women were led by Kim Peek in six of the seven meets and Nate Nevius was the top runner for the men in all seven meets. Morgan Kimball was the top runner for the women at Wisconsin Lutheran.

NEW Leader for the women

Taking over the women’s cross country team in 2010, Joel Cotton became the third head coach in the history of the program. He will also be the head coach for the women’s track and field team. Cotton has a background in running as he ran at NCAA Division I Indiana University. He was an All-Big Ten academic selection while he was there.

nccaa national meet

For the first time in the history of both programs, the men’s and women’s teams ran together at the NCCAA National meet. It was the second year in a row for the women to advance to the championships and the first for the men since 1992.

Making their sixth appearance at the national meet, the men finished 11th of 28 teams. Nate Nevius was the top runner as he finished 34th.

The women had a strong outing as they were eighth of 21 teams. Kim Peek crossed the line in 34th as the top finisher for Judson.

CCAc championship meet

Judson hosted their first-ever CCAC Championship meet in November in Elgin. Rich Weinhandl and Joel Cotton both put together the meet and course by the Highlands Golf Course. The women finished in sixth place while the men came in seventh place.

top 20 finishes

Three runners from Judson had top 20 finishes in the 2010 season. Morgan Kimball, Kyle Julian, and Nate Nevius all had one top 20 finish.

All three of them had their top 20 finishes at the Wisconsin Lutheran meet.

Kimball led the women with a 14th place finish and a 25:24 time in the 6K run. Nevius and Julian helped the men to a fifth place finish. Nevius came in 11th with a time of 27:30 while Julian was 20th at 28:08 in the 8K run.

Academics

Four athletes were represented on the CCAC All-Academic team for Judson. Three women and one male all made the team. Stephanie Belokon, Murphy Kurth, and Morgan Kimball represented the women’s team and Tim Ciochon was the men’s team member. To make the CCAC All-Academic team you need a 3.25 grade point average and be a sophomore at the attending university and attended atleast one year at that university.

Stephanie Belokon received a NAIA national honor being selected to the NAIA/Red Cross Leadership Summitt. She was one of 15 NAIA athletes chosen the nation to attend the 10day program in Washington D.C. in June 2011.

She is the first athlete from Judson to be selected for this program.
