Background Context

A traditional fishing village with as little as 25 houses and has changed little in the past 100 years and is one of few true fishing villages still in existence. Located Northumberland, Alnwick,England. Though fishing has been the focal point for this village for over the centuries, this was changed as a result of World War Two with the RAF making a base close by. The main function now for RAF Boulmer search and rescue base, helping to aid those lost at sea alongside the volunteers at the lifeboat station.

Existing DimensioNS The existing site dimensions where taken from DIGI-MAPS, (2014). The site length is around 50 meteres at its longest, with an average width of 20-25 meteres, The total Site Area roughly calculates at

With in some practises there is a feeling that the significance of the Lifeboat house to the community has a great cultural and sympothetic indulgence of the area; Robin Kent Architecture & Conservation who have already explored the importance of this building to the community went on to say

REFERENCE WILL BE MADE TO THE BUILDING STYLES IN THE SURROUNDING AREA. MADE FROM THICK RANDOM RUBBLE WALLS AND HEAVY SLATED ROOFS WHICH IS A GREAT TOOL FOR THERMAL MASS GIVING THE HARSH WINTER ENVIRONMENT WHERE TEMPRETURES CAN CALL BELLOW 15 DEGREES.

Rear Elevation

From the front side and rear elevations above the typical shape of the building footprint is typically in keeping with the surrounding area of boulmer, with weathered random rubble stone and a series of pitched roofs, the histroical context of this village community on a social. histric and cultural aspect of this type of housing will need to be thought about in much depth to allow a proposal which will be accepted by the community.

the wind speeds on average as supplied by The Met Office,(2014) suggest between 46 - 48 Meteres per Second (M/s)

THE ‘RUBUSTNESS’ OF THE MATERIALS HAVE BEEN SPECIFICLY CHOSEN DUE TO THE HARSH WEATHER IT MUST WITHSTAND, MANY BUILDINGS SUCH AS THE CHURCH AND DOMESTIC HOUSING HAS STOOF FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY.

The diagram to the right also shows previaling wind direct, a possible cause of driven rain from inland aswell as from the North Sea Approx 33-56.5 Ltr M/s

Services As with many costal towns in Northumberland the only power utility is electricity, as a result if gas wanted to be used a line would have to be installed which would be costly. Or gas containers would have to substitute. For this reason likely to stay with Electricity

SUMMER SUN PATH As the sun path sweeps around the south of the bounding at a high level it could possibly be incorporated into the design.

COMPARISON,

Pot ent i a l s our c eof ‘ Noi s e ’ ,

The winter sun path is much lower and as nearby building is very close no light will be able to get into windows on this elevation.
