SOLAR SHADING AS the proposed ideas for Boulmer Community Centre has a larged glazed section of the buildings profile on the southern elevation as well as looking out onto the sea from the East elevation which will both be subject to glare both in the morning into the early evening.

Simple methods such as ‘black out’ blinds which significantly reduce the amount of of heat gains which interfere with HVAC systems and internal heat loads. BY mitigating the solar gains to a building it is possible to improve the users thermal comfort.

By using mechanical or moveable panels or an autonimous system glade can be avoided and optimum light allowed to be passed through.

It is evident that within the UK there is a move towards sustainable design, by which solar shading in the form of reducing the cooling loads needed to mechanicly cool buildings.

Lighting

Table of Illuminance

Lighting is very important within a building and the type of lighting even more so. By exploring various stamdards (CIBSE,2012) for lighting;both task and ambient. there is hope that this will help to influence the VIRTUAL PROJECT BY evaluating the client brief and understanding what type of light, housing and power will be needed for the different spacial uses of the Boulmer Visitors Centre a better idea of how it will perform can be made.

Initial Cost

As with many energy saving systems the ‘payback’ time from the equipment being installed to the savings start can be delayed; however looking closer at life cycle cost it is benificial.

Table adapted from BS EN 12464-1:2011

LEDS

potential energy saving alternative with 50,000 hours rated life, no UV or IR emissions and will contain no mercury.

LIGHT OUTPUT RATIO (LOR): Due to advances in technolgy and design the improvement in lumanaire design and reflective materials allows both natrual and mechanical light to be used more ef ficiently than before, (CIBSE 2011).

Day Light Harvesting By using systems such as Philips Light Master KNX ensures energy savings with self regulating power optimisition. Maximizing the use of daylight saving upto 35% of lighting energy.

Depending upon the task which is undertaken there is a need for a difference in lux to ensure that the user is comfortable. With regard to Boulmer; a visitor which is using the computer facilities will need a different lighting level from someone who will be just walking between buildings or completing general tasks.

Autonomous and actuators for instant control. BY incorporating sensors build into the structure the buildings management system will be able to pick up on changes internally and adjust, resulting in around

10% increase in energy efficiency.

Lighting accounts for 20% of all electrical energy usage. It is therefore not surprising that in the drive to reduce energy consumption, lighting has attracted a lot of attention.
