Monday Jan. 18, Noon Children’s Hospital Main Campus 13123 E 16th Ave., Aurora During the 2015-16 season, the Colorado Chamber Players recognizes the brilliance of composer. A more intimate side of Shostakovich’s chamber music is presented in this free program, repeated at three locations, with Paul Primus and Margaret Soper Gutierrez, violins; Barbara Hamilton, viola; and Andrew Cooperstock, piano. The five violin duos are full of Slavic charm and warm lyricism, and are compiled from early works. In contrast, the viola sonata is a brooding and haunting work, and was the last completed work by Shostakovich, finished on his deathbed. Sergei Prokofiev’s brilliant D major Violin and Piano Sonata finishes the program. Program: Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano, Dmitri Shostakovich (1955), arranged by Levon Atovmian; Prelude, Gavotte, Elegy, Waltz, Polka; Sonata for Viola and Piano, op. 147, Dmitri Shostakovich (1975); Sonata no.2 in D major for Violin and Piano, op. 94a, Sergei Prokofiev (1944), written for violinist David Oistrakh.
