I’ve met a culture that teaches our little girls that men are ought to be respected and indirectly teaches young men that should they fail to control “a woman”, then their manhood is questionable. I’ve encountered a religion that gives doctrines of slavery to women, in that it enforces the knowledge that they should be able to conduct themselves righteous so that they can stand fit to be married by men as if marriage is an achievement more important than selfemancipation. Why teach them such? Is

Do not tell me that you take them to school. That is not enough! Am I going to teach them things of the past as they were given to my sisters and friends? I have no victory in gaining favour from women and I put it to you that this document has nothing to do with glorifying me. With the above concerns, I challenge women to eschew not their standards, to stop seeking validation but to be validated by force. POWER TO THE P*SSY written by Nkanyezi Gumede

I

believe it was Russ who said “you’re just enamored by p*ssy power” and he had a point, except he was talking about one guy who slept with his girl. I’m talking about the entire heterosexual male populace of the world.

for one night. We go to parties stuffed in our friends’ crowded cars in the depths of winter with the hopes of getting some and we make fun of our brothers for having fumbled past an opportunity for sex.

We are crazy about the part of a woman Fellas let’s be honest the coochy is that lies between her legs but aren’t always something we all live for. We lie for it, we just as crazy about taking care of the part adapt new characteristics for it, we eagerly that lies in her head or in her chest. And go on dates, we unravel our deepest the funniest part is that as crazy as we all memories and we settle in to watch movies are about the p*ssy we try by all means we can’t always fully pay attention to to get to discredit it and make it a despicable, it (I must admit some of them are really pretentious weapon that cannot be talked fantastic pieces of cinema). about with the kids let alone shown to them. We work to get enough money and enough reserves so we can attract the Why? Why do we do that? Are we afraid coochy and then accommodate it at least to admit the power that the coochy has on

us? I mean nobody likes to feel powerless especially not us guys so maybe we (well those who came before us) decided that there is in fact such a thing as bad publicity and that anything that would have that much power over us should experience the full wrath of that bad publicity. There are countless women who have been shamed (even by other women) for sleeping with men to advance their lives. Their lives have been destroyed and they normally can’t easily recover from the reputational damage. The men on the other hand are often celebrated and nothing to damaging is said or done to them and in fact nothing

normally happens to them. Weird huh? Not really. The world is bent on keeping women and their power at bay. I honestly don’t know why but I know that if there is going to be this much effort put into the oppression of an entire gender there must be a lot of hidden potential within them. Power to the pussy.

TOKE WITH CAUTION written by

elieve it or not weed is not nearly even half as bad as society thinks it is. As a matter of fact it could be the best thing you will ever do. Sure enough everyone reacts differently to marijuana, however its effects vary depending on how you consume it. Many of the pressing issues, however, are centered by how millions of stoners all over South Africa remain pretty much in the dark with regards to legalization of Marijuana. After all “without the law, freedom would be a social crisis”. I heard somebody say that on television last night. Do you agree? My happiness and excitement over legalization of weed remains unfettered make no mistake about that. However, one of my colleagues and I suddenly had all these crazy questions a few days later after weed was legalized: • How much weed do the police have to publicly catch you with in order for them to lawfully arrest you?

• Are there any limitations imposed when it comes to growing marijuana in your yard? • Does the yard have to be secured? If you asked me, I would say the government should consider full legalization of marijuana, Amsterdam

- style. Because at this rate we will be dealing with ship-loads of unnecessary admin. An important thing to note is that marijuana has been legalized for private use only. So to you my fellow stoners I say, continue to

toke with caution when you decide to roll and spark one in a public place. It is also still illegal to supply or sell marijuana. Which sucks obviously since getting time in prison. We are talking fifteen to twenty five years in prison. However this is South Africa and it

seems information about legalization of weed is still withheld even amongst state authorities such as the police. The Constitutional Court, situated in Braamfontein, is the highest court of the land. The decision

to legalize marijuana for private use was made in the Constitutional Court. Decisions in this court are binding on the whole country with the court itself being a prominent source of law, so skyf. Happy Toking,

CAT CALLING

đ&#x;˜žđ&#x;˜žđ&#x;˜žđ&#x;˜ž The dictionary defines it as street harassment and also as a form of sexual harassment because of the unwanted and uncomfortable gestures. Honking, wolf whistles, following, exposure and so much more that is being done to mostly women racking up 90% of the 100% of the times it occurs.

I

’m pretty sure every culture has a name for catcalling but for the sake of the majority we will stick with cat-calling. Yes, the natural order of things is for men to suit women right? But what happens when boundaries are crossed and common sense is overlooked? Well, it creates catcallers

You need to understand that in a country where at least 52 people are murdered on a daily basis and the grim abuse women suffer at the hands of the perpetrators it is very scary if they find themselves in a cat-calling situation because it can turn deadly and time and time again we have seen this play out, it always ends with fatalities.

From a guy’s point of view, they argued that they have to know who they are gunning for that’s why they look but then again when does enough become too much and remember when your mom told you that it is rude to stare? the same principles still apply today. The concept of no means no and consent still hovers

There are probably many various reasons why people resort to cat-calling the most obvious ones would be things like low selfesteem, because people with a low self-esteem feel better about themselves when they put other people down.

around the concept of cat-calling, it disregards respect for women and that is why it will be much easier to teach the up and coming generation these norms because the current generation might already be doomed hence the spiked sexual assault and murder statistics that were released late last month.

Cat-calling is visible mostly in the streets, bunch of guys would be whistling and making dirty comments usually when a lady passes along. The whistling and comments turns to threats and insults when the lady decides to ignore them, and just like that the situation has the potential to escalate into something much more sinister.

Then, there is impressing friends. Motive at the expense of innocent bystanders. It is in the way they dress and look they say but there is not one on earth to make someone feel filthy, uncomfortable or threatened regardless of how they are dressed or handle themselves. The point I’m making is cat-calling is scary fellas, do not do it, makes them agitated and uncomfortable, we were tasked to protect them by any means, we were tasked with making them feel like queens that they are on a daily basis, not to harass them and make them paranoid people.

what’s varsity really for? by Nkanyezi Gumede

If you’re thinking education then you’re on the right track but if you’re thinking textbooks and exams then I’m afraid you’ve taken an off ramp somewhere along the course. The education I’m talking about is not measured in semester tests and exams but rather in the interactions you are able to have with other people after the onslaught of group assignments, group meetings, different roommates, changing friends, boyfriends and girlfriends and an assortment of lecturers. Re ho rota ho phila le batho (we are teaching you to live with other people) that’s is the first lesson. I have always said since my third year at University that I didn’t go there necessarily for the degree, heck the University still had my

degree due to outstanding fees, instead I went for the people, to build connections for the future. I got to university with a small group of friends from high school and a reluctant eagerness to meet a bunch of new people all at once. Gradually I made more and more friends. By the 2nd month of the year I had my own squad that I’d hang out with everyday. They were incredibly pivotal in developing the person who’s life you’re reading about today. We had arguments, moments of turmoil, we struggled together, we had a lot of fun together (not to mention all the alcohol) and we grew a fondness for each other that you can only get by going through these things together. The struggles make you a stronger per-

son, the conflicts teach you what you don’t want to be and what you don’t want to be around, the good times teach you that there is a silver lining and that you’re in a place where you’re truly cared for... And also how to handle your liquor. To learn how to live with people is to learn how to live with yourself. A lot of people go through life without that skill and it takes a painful toll on them. The second lesson varsity should teach you is to be open minded. You’re exposed to so many people with so many stories and so many characteristics. So many opportunities for work, relationships, play and learning. You’re shown on a regular basis that the way something is is not necessarily the way it is meant to be or the only

Re ho rota ho phila le batho way it can be. Ask someone who’s doing something mathematical how many different ways there are to solve an equation for example or ask 4 BA students to explain one theory to you, you’ll get 4 different explanation of the same thing. How then can you not see the world in all its variety if you’re immersed in it all the time? You grow your ability to understand other people and to accept other people (we all know how important that is right?). You learn to appreciate who you are and how you think or you learn to fix who you are and how you think. At some point you get the optimistic feeling that the possibilities are endless and you know what? In this day and age they truly are. But that isn’t to say that you’ll al-

ways be feeling optimistic in your experience of University corridors but that’s hat part of the education, emotional education. A person who has survived the tricky maze that is University has a very distinct way of seeing and doing life. Ba rotehile ankere? But that doesn’t necessarily mean they think they’re better (well it shouldn’t anyway) because let’s be honest paying nearly R120,000 to go through all of this isn’t the only way to learn how to live with people. But those who have taken this route have a broader understanding of the tricks of life’s trade. They can see them and survive them. They can grow from hardship and tolerate the most annoying people. This, kids, is why you should stay in school

TSHEP MOTI

PANG ICOE

T

shepang ‘Mcflurry’ Moticoe is an artist through and through. She embodies all that it means to be immersed in the arts, to live, breathe, eat and cry the arts. Moticoe is an actress, dancer, choreographer and director. She has starred in stage productions in Los Angles, California and directed a production at this year’s edition of the bewildering Grahamstown Arts Festival. We sat down to talk to her about life, art and the drama that comes from both

What do you love most about what you do? I consider myself the visceral leeway of the forbidden truth of art so my purpose comes from what I like about it, which is that I get to tell the forbidden truth or forbidden truths of the world because we live in a society that is more of an illusion. We don’t want the truth we want the amended truth because the actual truth hurts more. I also think the theories have helped because now you get to tell those truths without being labelled as racist or a feminist or whatever the case may be. It’s just your perspective and you get to give it as raw as possible.

What meaning do you find in what you do? Look, part of meaning for me is what makes up what an artist should be. To me you cannot exist as a performer if you don’t have the discipline, the love and the passion. So my meaning comes from all 3 of those things and when they come together you get the truth that you are trying to tell. I always say when I post status messages “black and white, no shades of grey” and the meaning comes from the opportunity to explore those greys

What is the core message you want to send through your work? Interestingly I had a change of heart in each different phase of learning. During my undergrad I cared more about wanting to be famous and known but then I got to pot grad and I started to find myself and I think I’m leaning more to the educational side of it. So at the end of it all I think I’ll be part of those who contributed to changing the wellbeing aspect. Often we are so focused on the actors playing the characters they are meant to play that we forget about their wellbeing. Funny enough my thesis was about that,

How long have you been doing what you’re doing? My mom has always been the type to want her child to explore everything the world has to offer and so when I was 4 or 5 my mom took me for ballroom dancing. We then moved from Parys to the Vaal and I went to Odenpark where we did some more traditional things like Sarafina for example. Performing has been rooted in me from a young age but I took the decision to take this up as a career in matriic and I had a teacher who really believed in my acting even though she didn’t perhaps have enough time to give us all she could. But at the time it was more about fame.

How do you think art can change the world?

For me art is one of those centers that make you understand why you have your senses and not just one sense. It helps you to remember what the sixth sense is, intuition. Art give you the educational opportunity to trust yourself. For me I think art as an education serves to teach the human species that it is still possible to be human and outside the pressures of university and finding yourself you need to be able to express yourself and art offers you that. Art is a new rehabilitation center actually.

Is this something you’ve always wanted to do? No. Yoh no actually at some point I wanted to be an engineer and a bunch of other things that my mom got me to explore while growing up. Also for us growing up dancing was always something we just did for fun. We’d go into the street and just start dancing randomly. SO it was always there I just never thought of it as a profession, it was just something kids do. Ke monate, ha ola pina ra jiva fela. So I never thought of it as a career even when I came to varsity it still wasn’t part of the plan. I just wanted to be in the arts and this was part of the arts. When I got here I did everything, I did writing, producing, sound and then only after that I tried stage and screen and felt at home

Have you seen any major changes in the art in the time while you’ve been part of it? I can say this much, this industry is very tiny and because of that opportunities are always given to the same people so seeing new people is very rare. Screen-wise yes it has grown. We are seeing more and more new people thanks to things like Mzanis Magic Lokshin Bioskop and things like that wabona? But theatre wise I don’t think so. I think there is a progression happening but I don’t think it’s happening fast enough but then again I don’t think there is a need for an immediate rush considering there is also a technological change taking place. The worst case scenario is that we’re going to become a world of technology and that change is occurring slow enough. By the time when it has become easier to get opportunities people won’t get to experience this realty that we are going through, the one where you have to hustle and fund raise money to put your own play on.

Would you ever do screen?

Absolutely. Look, while doing my postgrad and gathering research I studied different techniques and styles which I realised are more effective on screen. Being on screen would then be an opportunity to implement all the techniques I had been learning and researching in class and seeing what do I get out of Tshepang when she’s on screen. Going forth into my masters I want to look into the idea that if we are Africans, or South Africans rather, using western techniques how effective are they considering the histories aren’t the same?

Who are your biggest influencers? Sad story, I don’t have influencers. My whole life I’ve heard people talk about who their role model is and I grew into the habit of saying “my role model is my mother” because it was the safest way to go. I’ve always been lazy when it comes to learning other people’s lives. Maybe growing up I never saw it this way but the reason why I am lazy to learn about other people is that I’m scared that what I find out about them might change who I want to become, especially if I haven’t become myself yet. I don’t know much about celebrities but if you were to ask me what kind of theatre I’d go with I would easily be able to say “go with that one” or “don’t go with this one”. So I know the type of theatre that speaks to me but I don’t have people who I can say “wang driva yong”. But I can say this, the importance of having a mentor is having someone outside of what you do, have a third eye outside of your eyes that is objective and can tell you when you’re being a bit irrational.

Do you think formal training is important in the arts? Eish okay I believe in being trained because you get molded but I also believe authenticity comes from the child who didn’t get the chance to be molded. You see molding is teaching a person to manipulate. We teach you the right things to do, we teach you the basics and then we allow you to break the rules. But the person who was never taught the rules makes them, breaks them, finds the wrong and the rights, decides what they are and makes a whole creation of all of that without the restrictions of existing rules. There is a sense of vastness in a person who was never taught the right and wrong according to the books of so and so. I think its important to educate and that is why we have books and whatever but I also think labo aba gerezayo who don’t get the opportunity to be taught by the book are also creating something that those Do you want to do more of us who are taught by the directing? book need to learn which is Yes I do want to do more authenticity and to make our directing. Directing comes with own theories so we can make discipline, it comes with being more theories. Academics able to say no to yourself, to always say that there is no rectify yourself, to say no to original idea but knowing that yourself and to trust someone someone has already come else outside of yourself so I up with the idea restricts think I need to indulge more your creativity. That one who into it, I need it for the sake of doesn’t know takes it further. growth but I also need it for the sake of being a performer. When you are a performer at times we become too dependant and when you are a director you need to be a lot more independent because the failures are going to be blamed on you. Being a libra I just want to balance it out. I want to try all the realms before saying “this is the realm that I want to be in”

Music by Bokang Shika

It is a very huge year for music, hip hop to be specific; albums are dropping like rain drops.

Tha Carter V Weezy is back with a new album after an 8 year hiatus. The rapper dropped the long awaited Tha Carter V album and hasn’t had to look back since, and why would he? It jas already gone gold after a week of its release. It features a medly of rapper and is made up of 23 tracks in total.

Drop a 16 L-Tido finally dropped the album he told us, in the beginning of the year, that he’d drop in May 2018. The album features people like AKA, Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai, Sean Pages and more.

Thank Da King

Kid X took the time to thank da king when he recently dropped the follow up album to 88King titled Thank Da King. On the album he features names like Zoocci Coke Dope, Kwesta, Zingah, Makwa, Da Les and artwork curated by Mam Esther Mahlangu herself

Emakhaya with Mlindo Mr. Amablesser has decided to bless us with an entire album of his own making. Emakhaya is the singer’s debut album and features big name artists like Sjava, Kwesta and DJ Maphorisa. It is most certainly an album you shouldn’t ignore.

Vur Vai

Kwesta is back with another hit for December. This one goes by the name Vur Vai and its sure to set a couple of dance floors alight this festive season.

Goodbye HHP

Motswako legend HHP passed on recently as he lost the fight to depression. The hit maker was known for how much he spoke out about the mental illness and his ordeal with it. We cried, we sobbed and we realised that the music and lights had to be silenced.

Moya Wa Taola Black Motion dropped an eagerly awaited album titled Moya Wa Taola that will probably change the party scene this December. The release was quite low-key and featured artists like Nolwazi, Msaki and Mafikizolo as well as hit songs like Joy Joy with Breden Praise.

Asphelelanga Another jam to get emotional to. We clearly weren’t the only ones missing PRO, Mandoza, Brenda Fassie and many other late , great South African singers. SAMA winner Vusi Nova even wrote an entire song just for them. It’s very emotional and very viral. You’ve probably heard it by now too

The Migoses keep doing their own thing The individual memebers of Migos have been releasing solo projects lately. the latest one is from Take Off and it’s really good. Definitely have a listen.

Not all heroes wear capes Metro Boomin just wanted some more man. The Atlanta based producer retired earlier this year but now, like many other rap icons, he’s back with a definitive new album titled Not All Heroes Wear Capes.

Honey and pain Stogie T is by no means lyrically challenged and he proved it once again with his latest release titled Honey abd Pain in which he features artists like J Molley, Maggz, Kwesta, Mike Classic and Ayanda Jiyva. It’s a work of art and you should defintely tune into it.

Swizz Beatz’s poison Swizz Beatz is back and this time with a whole album. This new project is titled Poison and features artists like Young Thug, 2 Chains, Kendrick Lamar, Jim Jones and the legendary Nas.

The future is electric

The car world is going electric. This is definitely old news but the more time goes on it seems the more it is being proven that as noble as electric power trains may be they are certainly not ready for real world usage and I don’t think they’re ready for real world eyes either becasue wow some of these creations are...

Built for Africa by Africa

there’s no better word for it, they’re ugly. On top of that they don’t fully help the envirnment they just find an akternative way to hurt it by mining for the stuff that fills those lithium ion battery packs and not to mention the disposal of those battery packs which is sure to get out of hand as customers increase.

Ever heard of Mobius Motors? Well they’re a Kenya based car company that makes vehicles just for African terrains. The company released their first model in 2014 and

now they are ready for the production of thir newest model that promises more luxury than the previous one. They are already accepting orders and plan to be shipping out next year

BMW can’t seem to stop making good looking cars in 2018. We’ve had our collective breath taken away by the return of the 8 series with the M850i coupe, the all new 5 series and now the smalles sedan gets the facelift treatment

The all new 3

for the upcoming 2019 model range and my word its quite a looker. BMW has kept the details to themselves on the engines that will be powering the 7th generation 3 but they have released tid bits about the 320d which will make

190 PS and emit 110 g/km in CO2. The new 3 comes with a long awaited interior facelift as well which isn’t all that breattaking but it certainly offers some much needed relief from the constantly reoccuring older look of the past.

SENNA comes back from the dead

The whole world though that Mclaren had gone up to the top of the supercar fraternity when they reemerged onto the scene with the mind blowing aray of cars they had to offer. from the smalles wolf in the pack they’ve managed to pack a large bite and no bite has been larger than that of P1 hypercar... intil now. Mclaren recently laubched their all new

hypercar, the P15 Senna, in South Africa. The hypercar is named after the late Brazilian F1 driver Ayrton Senna who won 3 Formula 1 titles for Mclaren and it tops the P1 by a huge jump. It’s faster than the P1 with a 4.0 liter V8 taken from the 720S now producing 789 HP. Its more aerodynamic too and it shows in how dramatic the Senna looks. Keep and out for this one.

Ken Block’s got a new Hoonitruck

Diamonds are for South Africa

Ken Block isn’t only bringing us a new gymkana video he’s also bring a whole new vehicle with it! (Notice I said vehicle and not car) that’s very important because this time around the all new gymkana mobile is a 1977 Ford F150 pickup truck with an engine

straight out of the Ford GT supercar that has been tuned to make more than 900 HP and 702 pound feet of torque. It’s an absolute beast and a beast deserves a name that is just as wacky so they’ve named it the Hoonitruck as a follow up to the Hoonicorn Mustang.

Not only do we mine them Subaru also thinks we have them so they made a diamond... for us! Pictured here is the Subaru WRX STI Diamond edition which will only be sold in South Africa. If the rainbow nation didn’t

already love Subies we’re certainly smitten now. There will only be 30 units of the car sold and each of them will make 260 KW and 464 Nm of torque making it 0.7 seconds faster to 100. Its not only fast its also expensive at R800k.

Mental issues and the the hustle

A

s a self-proclaimed young gerezapreneur, I - Curtly Lawrence Alphonzo Adams - will be the first person to confess that the grind takes a lot from you. I read a few articles on the mental health issues entrepreneurs’ face and the top 3 are Depression, ADHD and Anxiety. An entrepreneur and clinical professor by the name of Dr. Michael Freeman surveyed 242 entrepreneurs, studying their mental health, 242 entrepreneurs were surveyed, 49% reported having some form of mental-health condition

with Depression being the highest, followed by ADHD and then Anxiety. Research by Alexander McKelvie, chair and associate professor in the department of entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises, and J. Michael Haynie, Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse Universitypublished in the Journal of Business Venturing, found that serial entrepreneurs display symptoms of behavioral addictions. obsessive thoughts, withdrawalengagement cycles, and negative

emotional outcomes are similar to other behavioural addictions, like gambling. The reason for this high level of mental health problems stem from the immense pressure entrepreneurs face and the load that entrepreneurs have to carry. Being a young African entrepreneur who employes his/her elders is even more straining because you are supposed to manage your employees and at the same time stay true to your African values.

I SAW SUMMER by Tsholofelo Molosi Hidden teeth are a taboo because they stop ones “happy muscles” from moving. However, the day they move, they remind the beholder what they have been missing out on. A smile withheld is like stars refusing to shine, the moon refusing to grow and the summer refusing to come. When good or beauty refuse to show up, consider that as a taboo. Make someone’s day. Make their night. Make their life! Create the summer you have always wanted for yourself and others and there is only one path to this “summer”. Through a smile. Having a crease between your eyebrows is not fair, because the “happy muscles” were never given a chance to change your life and others. May seeing a smile, from this day onwards remind that, you have seen summer.
