PRESIDENT’S CORNER There’s a lot of good news throughout APG’s newsrooms lately! News teams across the company have garnered numerous statewide awards for excellence in journalism, and we as a company are proud of their efforts. Our content is our franchise, and is the driver of all of our efforts. Though some other newspaper companies have hit the newsrooms hard with layoffs, APG has made a concerted effort to support our news teams – and we’ll continue to do so. Congratulations to all of our news stars who have walked away with recognition awards this year! This month also marks the launch of our new, company-wide website, www.adamspg.com. Our primary goal with the website is to provide better online services to APG Associates, and to better connect all of APG regional operations. There are many Associate-driven services available on the website, and I hope you take advantage of them. Additionally, the website will better acquaint new Associates with APG, and give them a clear sense of who we are and what we stand for and our vision for the future. Thanks to all who worked hard to develop and launch our new website, especially the team from The High Road Agency in Johnson City, Tennessee. We will do our best to keep the website fresh and up-to-date as we go forward. Please enjoy this month’s newsletter! Thanks! Mark Adams/CEO

LIFT

STEPS
TO A SAFE
3
8 4
SIZE UP THE LOAD. Always assess the object before lifting it. Make sure the load is stable and balanced. Carefully and slowly apply force against the object to determine its weight. If it is too heavy, get help! PLAN THE JOB. Plan a route that is free of tripping and slipping hazards. Know where the object will be unloaded and plan for rest stops if necessary. Begin in the direction you are planning on going. Do not twist your body. ESTABLISH A BASE OF SUPPORT. Make sure you have firm footing. Keep your feet at least shoulder width apart. A staggered stance, with one foot slightly behind the other, often helps provide a firm base of support. BEND YOUR KNEES. Bend at your knees, not at your waist. Bend down as far as necessary using your legs and not your back. GET A GOOD GRIP. Grip the load firmly, using your whole hand, not just your fingers.
LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS. Lift with your legs to allow your body’s powerful leg muscles to do the work. Flex your knees and hips, not your back. Avoid bending at the waist. KEEP THE LOAD CLOSE. Keep the load close to your body. The closer it is to your spine, the less force it exerts on your back. Maintain the natural inward curve of your lower back. Keep your back upright. Whether you are lifting or putting down a load, do not add the weight of your body to the load. Grasp the object with your palms, not just your fingers. Ten pounds carried at arm’s length is like lifting 100 pounds. PIVOT; DO NOT TWIST. Don’t twist your body when moving objects that you have already lifted. Pivot your feet and turn your entire body in the direction of movement.

WELCOME JEFF ROWTON APG SAFETY MANAGER Jeff Rowton was recently installed as the new Safety Manager for Adams Publishing Group. Prior to joining APG, Rowton spent 39 years in a variety of industrial environments, including manufacturing, warehousing/ shipping receiving, military airfield/electrical and electronic, construction, oilfield and commercial transportation. In his new role, Rowton will establish safety goals for APG managers and supervisors while offering them guidance for the safety of the Associates who report to them. In turn, this will save capital for APG by lowering accident claim rates and, more importantly, create a safer working environment for APG’s most valuable resources … our Associates. Increased safety awareness for Associates through training, observation and feedback is one of Rowton’s goals, along with providing uniform and relevant safety related training and policies for all APG companies, and promoting a workplace safety culture where Associates are not only responsible for their own safety but the safety of others as well. The new safety initiatives will provide APG associates with increased safety training, improved hazard awareness and an improved working environment.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (MARCH 23, 2018) – The Greeneville Sun won a dozen awards for print and online advertising excellence at the annual conference of Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Advertising & Marketing Executives. The Greeneville Sun nabbed first place for Best Black & White Ad for Llamapalooza Imagination Library and the Andy Shapiro Award for Laughlin Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Center. The Sun garnered second-place kudos for Best Color Ad, Humor Ad and Overall Web Advertising. The Sun took third place for Best Niche Publication, Sales Materials and Special Publication, as well as Best Color, Merchant Group, Professional Services

WATAUGA BEST OF THE BEST 2018
TOURISM AWARDS THE HIGH ROAD AGENCY The High Road Agency and two great tourism partners won big in April with top industry awards. The High Road Agency and Discover Bristol were proud to accept the 2017 Virgo Award for Advertising and Promotion – Broadcast category for the “Who Says You Can’t Be In Two Places At Once” Campaign. The award was accepted while at the 2018 Virginia Association of Destination Marketing Organizations Tourism symposium in Charlottesville. Established in 2009, the Virgo Awards recognize and celebrate the success of destination marketing organizations and their work. Each year, the Virginia Association of Destination Marketing Organizations honors the best and brightest in Virginia’s tourism industry. Whether it is an innovative marketing campaign, a wildly successful destination event, or a top-notch tourism professional,
the Virgo Awards showcase the immense talent and dedication of Virginia Association of Destination Marketing Organizations members. Spotlighting the best and brightest in Southeast Travel and Tourism, The High Road Agency and The Birthplace of Country Music received the Shining Example Award for best overall marketing campaign award for the “90th Anniversary of the 1927 Sessions”. Shining Example Awards recognize outstanding contributions in professional tourism across its member states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Two great partners, two remarkable awards, two amazing recognitions.
CHESAPEAKE TV GUIDES Chesapeake Region launched new TV Weekly Guides in three markets starting in April. Prior to the launch, the sales team worked hard to generate over $400,000 in annualized revenue to publish in these issues.
The business community gathered on April 10 in Watauga County, N.C., to celebrate top-notch community members at the eighth annual Best of the Best event presented by the Mountain Times Publications’ Watauga Democrat. This year’s Best of the Best accumulated more votes, additional categories and a larger number of attendees than ever before. Attendees gathered at the Alliance Bible Fellowship in Boone. Gene Fowler, publisher of Mountain Times Publications, delivered the invocation for the event. J.B. Lawrence — former Blowing Rock mayor and current client services executive at Highlands Bank — served as the night’s keynote speaker. Charlie Price, the advertising director of Mountain Times Publications, said with more than 300 people in attendance, he felt like the event had more excitement than in years past. There were six categories added to the list for an approximate number of 156 divisions, as well as close to 8,000 votes cast. Due to an increase in the number of votes coming from the Watauga Democrat website, the event saw a great deal of new winners. MINNETONKA, MINN. Longtime Sun Newspapers Sports Editor John Sherman has been named a recipient of two awards for improving the local communities through his continued excellence in sports coverage. John was presented with the Minnesota State High School League’s Outstanding Media Award during halftime of the Class AAA boys basketball championship game March 24 at Target Center. This award has been presented for the past four years and recognizes an individual’s excellence and commitment in covering state high school league activities. “He is a rock star among sports reporters covering high school activities,” said Tim Leighton, Minnesota State High School League communications coordinator. “His commitment and dedication to taking photos and chronicling games and participant profiles dates to the 1970s. It is a common sight to see John covering multiple events on the same day or evening. And the one thing that is ever-present when he works is his smile. He loves his work.”

On May 10, John will receive the Minnetonka School District Spinnaker Award at the district’s 2018 Celebration of Excellence Gala. The Spinnaker Award is presented annually to individuals or groups who exemplify volunteerism, community and serving the greater good. “John has been a tremendous asset to us, but more importantly, to all of our readers,” said Keith Anderson, director of news for Adams Publishing Group of East Central Minnesota. “In the last four decades nobody in Minnesota has been more comprehensive in their coverage of high school sports than John. “His storytelling and photography entertain, but also reveal the heartache, joy and emotion of high school sports,” Anderson continued. “He is truly deserving of the prestigious state media award, and also the Spinnaker Award, which he will receive in May. We are so proud of John and are fortunate he has spent his career with us.”

HOME IMPROVEMENT SHOWS MARK THE
END OF WINTER
For the Northern Minnesota region, the event of Home Improvement Show season marks the end of winter and the beginning of preparing
for Spring. The Hibbing Daily Tribune, The Mesabi Daily News and The Grand Rapids Herald Review participated in their community’s annual celebration by renting booth space in their area’s scheduled shows. It is a great opportunity to get out and meet our customers, sell some subscriptions and to educate the public about our products and services. Donna Pettinelli, Account Executive for The Mesabi Daily News, posed for a photo in their booth at the Iron Range Home, Sport and Travel Show, held the end of March in Virginia, Minnesota.
50 DAIRYLAND PEACH Celebrates 50 years! Fifty years ago, on Oct. 17, 1967, the first issue of the Dairyland Peach was delivered by mail to 10,000 area households. Central Minnesota had never seen anything quite like it before. In fact, the Peach was probably among the first 10 free shoppers in Minnesota. The paper was begun by the McCoy brothers, Dennis and Joe. In 1962, Joe and another brother, Jim, bought the Brooten Review, forerunner of the Bonanza Valley Voice. They kept the paper for only a couple of years.
ECM HAS CHANGED ITS NAME. To better align itself with Adams Publishing Group, ECM Publishers, Inc. has officially changed its name to Adams Publishing Group of East Central Minnesota. The history of ECM in Minnesota is long and proud and the name change builds upon that strength. A little known fact is that ECM actually stands for East Central Minnesota. Mark Weber, regional president, said, “The name change is designed to show that ECM is now part of an exciting new company and family of publications with a bright future. We all understand that ECM will always be an important part of our shared history. We also recognize how bright our future is being part of an exciting and growing company like APG!” 11

APG SIGNATURE EVENTS The 20 or so APG newspapers in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon will generate more than $1.2 million in revenue from a wide variety of events in 2018, more than one-third of that total coming from policy-oriented events produced by APG Signature Events. In 2019, we plan to increase APG-Signature Events’ annual revenue to nearly $600,000. Nearly all of this revenue comes from nontraditional sources that normally wouldn’t advertise, either in print or online, with a newspaper. The events range from the Idaho Healthcare Summit, the largest conference of its type in the Intermountain West, to creative events like one in Rock Springs, Wyoming celebrating first responders, to the “Rock ‘n’ Brews BBQ” in Nampa, Idaho, to a New Year’s Eve celebration in Ellensburg, Washington. APG Signature Events is a division of APG dedicated to planning and producing policybased conferences through collaboration with sponsors and stakeholders following a unique format created by APG Signature Events President Roger Plothow, formerly the editor and publisher of the Post Register newspaper in Idaho Falls, Idaho, has more then 35 years in the newspaper business. conference, plus conferences on cybersecurity, manufacturing and healthcare in the next nine months. Her contact information is angelac@wyomingnews.com. Our Manager of Operations and Planning is Janet Barton, based in Idaho Falls. A graduate of Brigham Young University-Provo, Janet was the Manager of Programs and Events from 2015 to 2017. Janet coordinates much of APG-SE’s marketing and promotion, but she also participates in all phases of producing our events. Her email address is jbarton@postregister.com. To see a list of all of these events and learn more about how you might launch a “signature event,” contact Roger Plothow in Idaho Falls at rplothow@postregister.com.
When Lori Sekot, as a high school student, started her first day at the Idaho State Journal, she likely didn’t expect that part-time job to turn into a career. Her schedule at the ISJ as a circulation clerk allowed her to work her way through college and earn her degree. Just as she graduated and was ready to move on, she met her future husband - who still had some coursework to finish. Thankfully for us, Laurie accepted a full-time job as Circulation Bookkeeper, got married and made eastern Idaho her home and in mid-March Laurie celebrated 40 years of service with the ISJ. Since then, she moved into the business office now serving as Office Manager where she has become a pillar of strength for the ISJ operation. We thank Laurie for her years of dedicated service and congratulate her on this milestone achievement.
HUMAN RESOURCES
Q&A:
ANSWERS TO YOUR ASK HR QUESTIONS.
Q: I have not had a raise in more than 10 years. When can Associates expect Adams to issue raises? A: APG subscribes to giving increases based on outstanding performance. Each region sets performance goals for each position which
are documented in September each year (although Associates should be getting regular feedback throughout the year on their status) on a performance review report. If an increase is warranted, that increase is written into the budget and will be effective on January 1. Questions regarding the process should be directed to individual managers, regional HR representative, publisher or general manager for your area.
Q: I was out three days due to illness and received a call that I would need to complete FMLA forms. Why do I need FMLA when I have PTO to cover it?
A: The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is intended for illnesses and accidents where Associates are out three or more days or will
be absent for multiple treatments for a serious illness over a series of dates. It is to protect the Associate’s job and is run concurrently with PTO, Short Term Disability and Workers Compensation. FMLA protects employees’ jobs for up to 12 weeks. FMLA covers those Associates who work 1,250 hours or more and have one year of service with a company (does not have to be concurrently on years of service). Please see your local HR representative if you have questions.
Q: What is Adams policy on rudeness to others? A: Adams Publishing Group handles rudeness (which is not the same as bullying or hostile environment) using the inspiration of Emily Post – 1. Equanimity. When someone’s rudeness upsets you, count to ten, take a few deep breaths, and ask yourself: “Is it really worth losing my cool over this?” 2. Size up the Grievances. Is it a waste of your emotional energy to let this get under your skin? Or, does the rudeness cross the line and need to be addressed face-to-face with equanimity? 3. Empathize with the rude person. Don’t take rudeness personally. Could the rude person just be having a bad day and taking it out on the world? Often, you can break the cycle of rudeness by empathizing with the root of someone’s cantankerous behavior as a sign that he or she is unhappy and be kind. 4. Lead by example. Rudeness begets rudeness and is contagious. (i.e. If you speak rudely to your waiter, don’t be surprised if you get the same treatment in return.) 5. Let it roll off your back. If you can’t come up with a joke or laugh it off, just shrug your shoulders, let it go and walk away.
Q: I have a question on tax withholding. For the past two years, we’ve ended up owing and I want to make sure it doesn’t happen this year. Can you tell me how much we should be taking out of our checks to make sure we don’t owe taxes at the end of the year?
A: We really can’t give advice on that. You should speak to your tax professional. When you make a decision, please reach out to an HR representative or a payroll coordinator for a current year W-4 to update.
