Sagittarian kids are fun and adventurous, and they are prone to changing their minds often. This month they will want to visit family members and close friends. Something inside of them wants to know more about themselves and their origins. It’s an ideal time to visit family, pull out old photos, share fun stories from the past, and create new ones. Sagittarian kids crave security, and this will give them a sense of belonging.

Family Learning Institute celebrates return to its original, permanent location
Autism friendly movie showings in Saline
Families with children on the autism spectrum look for programming that accommodates their special needs. The Autism Friendly Program at Emagine Saline is sensory-friendly and makes going to the movies a more enjoyable and accessible experience. With brighter house lights, lower volume, and audience interaction (movement, speaking, phone and tablet use), guests can also bring a “safe” snack for those with food allergies or restrictions. Showings take place on two Saturdays each month at 10:30am. In December, see Jumanji: The Next Level, Saturday, December 14 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Saturday, December 28.
According to recent MiSchoolData, almost three times as many students from low-income families read below grade level than their noneconomically challenged peers. The study shows that 57% of Ypsilanti third graders are not proficient in reading/writing while in Ann Arbor, the number is 31%. The Family Learning Institute (FLI), founded 20 years ago by Ann Arbor educator and social activist Doris Sperling, provides free tutoring for Washtenaw County children in grades 2-5. Due to the generosity of the Sperling Friends and Family, FLI operates in the newly reopened and refurbished site on S. Industrial. FLI offers one-to-one tutoring by trained community volunteers, who work with a child one hour each week for the entire school year to encourage grade-level proficiency. The Michigan Snowsports Industries Association (MSIA), is giving Michigan kids an opportunity to get out, have fun and get healthy this winter. Cold is Cool is a state-wide program providing every fourth and fifth grader in the state with the opportunity to ski for free. Students can obtain a Cold is Cool Ski & Ride Passport that gives them up to three free lift tickets or trail passes at 30 participating ski areas. MSIA charges $20 for the passport to cover printing and shipping. In addition to lift tickets donated by the participating ski areas, some areas have included coupons for equipment rental and free or discounted lessons. Visit Snow & Sun Sports at 3780 Jackson Rd., Suite J in Ann Arbor to purchase your child’s passport. Limitations apply and most resorts require an adult-purchased lift ticket, for safety reasons. Visit goskimichigan.com/cold-is-cool to view a complete list of participating ski areas and to order your passport online.

Dr. Bowers Creates a “Home Away From Home” for Quirky Kids
PHOTO CONTRIBUTED BY MIRANDA KESKES.
Dr. Mark Bowers and one of his patients, Connor, 9, pose in front of the forest wall at the Brighton Center for Pediatric Neurodevelopment.
With an increase neurological disorders, a place to go to for expert advice By Miranda Keskes
At the age of five, my son knew he was different. He was diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder), at the age of three. I agonized when and how to tell him about his disability, but his own insights helped me realize it was time. He shared he just wanted to be “normal” while he sobbed in my arms. Dr. Mark Bowers, a pediatric psychologist and clinical director at the Brighton Center for Pediatric Neurodevelopment, using kid-friendly language, explained to Connor that he has autism. My son was excited, and I was relieved. That conversation was the beginning of a strong bond between Dr. Bowers and my son. With Dr. Bowers’ encouragement, Connor created a slideshow to share with his first-grade class which related that he has autism, and what that means. With the support of his school, family, and Dr. Bowers’ guidance, Connor was able to embrace what he calls his “superpower” and educate his peers. None of this would have been possible without the doctor’s compassion and expertise. Cultivating unique talents Dr. Bowers opened his Center five years ago after spending ten years practicing in Ann Arbor. As a Brighton resident and father of four, he recognized many of the families he was helping were traveling from Livingston County, so moving his practice closer to home was a “win-win.” Specializing in neurodevelopmental diagnoses, such as autism, ADHD, brain trauma, genetic and learning disorders, Bowers sees patients ranging in age from 14 months old to the mid-20s. Many patients have been seeing him for years. “These are kids with unbelievable talents and gifts. I want to help them share these gifts with the world, but anxiety, stress and feeling overwhelmed can get in their way. It’s my goal to help them learn how to cope.” When asked what he enjoys most about his work, he shared, “There’s a sign in my office that says ‘Do what you love and you never work a day in your life.’ I love it all. It’s fun.” Connor agrees. When asked why he likes seeing Dr. Bowers, he said, “He’s a really awesome guy. He has a bunch of toys. He’s really awesome with kids, and he just makes you feel good.” Providing a safe space Through individual, family, and group therapy, Bowers has created a safe space for “quirky kids” to flourish and grow. “My mission is to help kids to achieve their social goals,” he shared. “Many of these kids simply want to have friends, feel comfortable, successful, and for people to be proud of them.” When asked what advice he would give to others on the spectrum, Connor, now age 9, confided, “I know how you feel. Having autism is different, but just because you have autism or Asperger’s or anything that makes you different, it’s okay. We can always learn and grow.” For more information about the Brighton Center for Pediatric Neurodevelopment, visit the website bcpn.org or call 810-360-1110. 8

Beyond The Books
TAG makes a difference at Ypsilanti District Library By Mary Rose Kulczak
Ypsilanti teens are making a difference in their community, thanks to a program at the Ypsilanti District Library. The Teen Advisory Group, or TAG, gives area youth a say in library programming, along with valuable service opportunities that encourage teens to participate and make connections. “The mission of TAG is to give youth a voice in what happens here,” said Jodi Krahnke, head of Youth Services. “When I came here five years ago, there wasn’t much of an advisory, only a couple of people marginally involved. Basically, nobody was hanging out here. That was our first project: how to make this more friendly for teens.” Youth-driven spaces TAG members wrote a proposal to the Ann Arbor Area Youth Council, and presented their proposed changes to the library spaces. In 2017, they received $3000 in grant money to purchase furniture and supplies for the new teen space, in addition to tool kits for use at events. “We were one of four arts organizations chosen to be part of the Youth Driven Spaces training. During that time we learned how to write a mission statement, develop a vision, and write an annual strategic plan. Going through those processes helped us realize that we need people to be comfortable here and have things they can do.” A haven away from home Jayden Monsur, 13, first learned of TAG while attending a baking class at the library. “Originally, my mother wanted me to join the group and I point-blank refused,” Monsur recalled. After talking with Jodi Krankhe and other TAG members, Monsur quickly changed her mind. “For me, TAG has
• December 2019 • www.annarborfamily.com
become a sort of haven away from home,” Monsur said. The South Arbor Charter Academy eighth grader looks forward to working with group members at meetings and events. “I really like it when Jodi takes out big pieces of paper, writes topic questions on them, and we all answer them. It’s a great way to jumpstart discussions or brainstorm ideas.” Raising awareness through social events Last year, the group sponsored a mental health awareness event with experts to answer questions. They also offer fandom parties, murder mystery after-hours events, and art-related meet-ups, along with monthly Anime clubs and D and D clubs. TAG members also learn valuable leadership skills, Kranhke added. “If it’s a large event, it gives them the chance to see the process of planning something, implementing it, and then evaluating it at the end. It’s really building a skill set that they can use to put on their resume or college application.” TAG members also volunteer at library children’s programming, including labs and summer reading programs. In spring of 2020, TAG plans to host an Environmental Day. “A lot of people participate because they need the service hours, so doing something and feeling like they’re giving back is very important to them.” “We’re like the Power Rangers of community service,” Monsur added. TAG is open to pre-teens and teens at both the Whittaker branch and the Michigan branch. Join any time by visiting ypsilibrary.org, attending an event, or by calling Jodi Krahnke at 734-482-4110 x1304.

Cheesecake and Family Go Hand in Hand
New dad opens 24th CC at Briarwood Mall Sean Brezzell both welcomed his son, Sean, and opened his new cheesecake store, 24th Cheesecakerie, earlier this year.
Cheerfully toting his baby son through Briarwood Mall, where he has become affectionately known as the “cheesecake guy,” Sean Brezzell is both a new dad and the co-owner of 24th Cheesecakerie (known as 24th CC at Briarwood Mall). Brezzell, who pours his heart into making cheesecakes, keep family and the people he serves at the top of his priority list. Brezzell has run the cheesecake-by-theslice shop with his mother, Vicki Brezzell, and grandmother, Barb Wilson, since May, only two months after he and his wife, Lisa, welcomed their new baby boy, Sean, into the world. “My son is the inspiration,” Brezzell said of opening his new business. Family catering business Brezzell is no stranger to the family baking business. He has been involved with his mother’s and grandmother’s catering business, Vic and Barb Plus Sean, since 1981. “I did a lot of their birthday and wedding cakes and my mom kept suggesting I do cheesecakes,” Brezzell said. Working as a pastry chef for the Ypsilanti Marriott, he got to try out many cheesecake flavors. He started entering bakeoff competitions, which introduced

him to a representative from the Briarwood Mall leasing office, who suggested that Brezzell rent some space at the mall. Brezzell also had another strategy— traveling to area restaurants to let them taste his products—which paid off, as Argus Farm Stop and Naked Burrito in Ann Arbor now stock his cheesecakes. Flavor inspiration Many of his flavor ideas, he said, come from family members who challenge him to try things. Flavors run the gamut from a Starbucks-inspired Caramel Macchiato cheesecake to pumpkin, chocolate, strawberry, lemon, blueberry, and plain cheesecakes, along with vegan and gluten-free options. Although cheesecake is “front and center” in the business, Brezell’s core mission is to share knowledge with people, because, as he says, people are at the heart of everything he does. “You can have the greatest products in the world, but there’s a problem if you don’t connect to people.” Family and priorities Working with family, he said, is easy because they have a lot of respect for and listen to each other. For example, the store’s name is family inspired, as Brezzell’s birthday, and that of his mother and grandmother, fall on the 24th of each of different months. Brezzell also feels lucky as he gets to spend time with little Sean every day. “I love the fact that he gets to see what I do,” Brezzell said. If there’s anything that being a new dad and business owner has taught him, he said, it is about priorities. Brezzell plans to open two additional stores in the metro area in the next year. To find out more about 24th Cheesecakerie and its offerings, visit 24thcc.com.

Pregnancy as a Collaborative Experience
CenteringPregnancy program offered to expectant Washtenaw County mothers By Miranda Keskes
Many expectant mothers are hopeful their pregnancy will be enjoyable, even fun, as they bond with their babies in utero. They envision new friendships with fellow expectant mothers, laughing and sharing this intimate and life-altering experience. This dream becomes a reality with the nationwide CenteringPregnancy® program. History of CenteringPregnancy An idea born in the 1990s when Sharon Rising of the Centering® Healthcare Institute created a program to bring pregnant women together during their prenatal visits. Through monthly meetings, women can share their expectations, fears, and questions with other expectant women under the guidance of a health care provider. Centering programs are now offered in 46 states with 70,000 patients served annually at over 575 sites.
Michigan Medicine’s adoption of the program The program was brought to Michigan Medicine by Katherine Pasque MD and Melisa Scott CNM (Certified Nurse-Midwife) about a year and a half ago. Starting with one group, the program has now expanded to seven and is expected to continue growing. After an initial individual meeting with their primary care provider, a group of six to twelve women, with due dates within four weeks of each other, hold monthly two-hour meetings. As their due dates approach, the meetings become bi-weekly. Scott shares, “I really get to know everyone well by spending two hours a month with them instead of the traditional 15-20 minutes.” Centering programs replace standard care. During meetings, women check their own weight and vitals, share snacks and discussion, and may be taken individually to a screened-off area so individual concerns can be addressed.
Expectant parents engaging during a CenteringPregnancy® meeting. The atmosphere of the group is relaxed and comfortable, inviting questions and conversation. Often, community members are brought in to provide guidance based upon the women’s interests, such as yoga techniques, car seat safety, safe sleep, and lactation advice. Scott shares that about 50 percent of the mothers participating are not first-time mothers. “Having been pregnant before, these women recognize the benefits of having a support group. I love watching the relationships form. They are so supportive and empathetic of one another. As a mom, I know how valuable that momto-mom support is.” Evidence-based results Scott was initially drawn to the program as “the health outcomes are undeniable and it’s a fun, connected way to experience pregnancy.”
According to the Centering® Healthcare Institute, “Centering demonstrates improved outcomes including a 33-47 percent decreased risk of preterm birth, a flattening of health disparities between black and white women, better visit attendance, greater readiness for birth and infant care, improved breastfeeding rates and higher patient satisfaction scores.” Join the collaboration The CenteringPregnancy program is currently offered at Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital and the Briarwood Center for Women, Children and Young Adults. The program has no extra cost and is covered by all insurance companies. Currently, there is no waiting list for the program. For more information about the CenteringPregnancy program offered by Michigan Medicine, visit umwomenshealth.org or call 734-232-2600.

A Menu Layered With Fun BOBCAT BONNIE’S
200 W. Michigan Ave. Ypsilanti, Michigan 48197 bobcatbonnies.com 734-879-0663 Monday-Wednesday 4-10pm Thursday 4-11pm Friday-Saturday 4pm-Midnight Sunday 4-10pm The name alone brings a smile to your face and with its logo, featuring a grinning bobcat, this gastropub adds to the positive vibes in Downtown Ypsilanti. Located in the space left vacant by Bona Sera on Michigan Avenue, Bobcat Bonnie’s offers a modern and friendly atmosphere with a large open dining room painted with deep colors. Bobcat Bonnie’s roots run deep in Michigan. Their original location, in Detroit’s Corktown, has now expanded to locations in Ferndale, Wyandotte, and now Ypsilanti. I was a bit apprehensive about how toddler-friendly the restaurant would be, with its trendy interior and dim lighting, but after my son spotted the coloring books and crayons at the hostess stand, we were in good shape.
Bobcat Bonnie’s, fresh food at a friendly price By Laura Eliason
Playful menu, international inspiration Bobcat Bonnie’s menu features a large array of shareables and tots, soups and salads, main courses, and desserts, as well as a large beer list focused on Michigan made brews and other drinks. We started out with the fan-favorite Cap’n Crunch chicken fingers ($9) and an order of the truffle tots ($7). The chicken, coated with Cap’n Crunch cereal breading, comes with two dipping sauces. We loved the sauces, especially the sriracha honey, which even our four-year-old enjoyed. The chicken fingers, due to the breading, were a little sweet for our taste. The truffle tots were delicious and left us wanting to try the other varieties offered on the menu. They arrived hot, crispy, salty and covered in parmesan cheese and truffle oil. Bobcat’s kids menu and mains The kids menu, featuring standard kids menu fare, had surprising quality. Our four-year-old ordered the kids burger with cheese ($6), but this is not your standard kids menu burger. The freshly
grilled patty arrived on a shiny brioche bun with cheddar cheese and a side of fries. ‘Tis the season, so we ordered the cody calebra’s turkey bowl ($10) for our twoyear-old. Mashed potatoes and stuffing come layered with fresh corn, chopped turkey, gravy, and then topped with cranberry relish; a holiday turkey dinner in a bowl. This mom stole more than a few bites from the bowl; It was delicious. My husband ordered the bobcat burger ($12) which features a giant, crispy, beer-battered onion ring, bacon, cheddar, and bbq sauce on a gorgeous brioche bun. He deemed it delicious and commented that the fries were crispy. We also ordered the naan club ($10), a standard club sandwich taken up a notch with turkey, ham, bacon, swiss, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and onion layered between slices of naan bread with sriracha aioli. The sandwich had great flavor but was somewhat difficult to eat due to its size and the bread choice. On our next visit, we want to try another option, perhaps the fish tacos ($11), blackened salmon ($13), or the korean beef sandwich ($12), which features bulgogi marinated beef and various toppings on a bolillo roll. The menu also offers vegan options including a mushroom dip sandwich ($10) and potstickers ($8). Dessert and final notes Looking around we noticed several other families and enjoyed the lively, if a little loud, atmosphere of the place. We decided to top off the meal by selecting a dessert from their changing dessert menu; apple crisp with whipped cream.

• December 2019 • www.annarborfamily.com
Stewed, and heavily spiced apples arrived in a cute mason jar topped with crunchy granola and a swirl of whipped cream. We enjoyed the apples but could have done without the crunchy chunks of granola topping. Next time we would love to try the pumpkin whoopie pie. The portion sizes for all of these items were reasonable, not huge, which we really appreciated. If you’re a family that loves to try new things, along with elevated pub food staples, all at a great price, then add a visit to Bobcat Bonnie’s into your holiday calendar.
