You parents better be in good physical and mental shape to keep up with these little ones. The symbol for this sign is the archer – shooting an arrow into space. It is definitely the most creative sign of the zodiac and the sign which has problems staying within boundaries. They love to wander and to explore, are unable to tell time and ready to climb every fence. They even play with the globe, fascinated with foreign lands and travel. They love animals of all kinds and sizes. They get along well with other children and with adults as long as they are not confined to a small space. The planet Saturn just moved into the sign of Sagittarius and it will be there for a few years. It is possible that this will help the children slow down a little‌..but it probably will not! They know absolutely no limits and are good students when challenged.

Miracle League Field Coming to Findlay Planning is underway for Miracle League Field, a new baseball field and playground for special needs that will be located near The Cube on the north side of Findlay. The $1.2 million project is sponsored by Blanchard Valley Health Foundation, along with private donors.

Thanksgiving Day Community Meal Findlay’s StoneBridge Church will celebrate its annual Thanksgiving Dinner for seniors, singles, shut-ins, families and anyone who just doesn’t want to cook. The dinner, from 11:30am-3pm on Nov. 26 is a free community event, and all are welcome. Those interested in volunteering for the dinner or searching for donations we welcome, and the church is also collecting 50 Tom Turkeys of 15-18 lbs. Volunteer applicants must be at least 12 years of age as of Nov. 25, 2015. There are limited volunteer opportunities for children under 12 years of age.-SM For more information or to volunteer, contact Stephanie Schack or Kelly Cramer in the church office, 2111 Stonehedge Dr., Findlay at 419-422-6862. Also visit stonebridgechurch.org.

“There isn’t anything like this in the area,” said Cindy Bregel, a member of the Miracle League board. “Families will drive from all over the state to visit and participate, and it will be great for the local economy.” Field and playground for everyone Miracle League Field will feature its own street access, with plenty of handicapped parking and a turnaround for easy drop-offs. There will also be specialized rubber surfaces on both the field and the playground, both completely handicapped-accessible for those who use wheelchairs or walkers.-CD

The playground will be totally inclusive, so it can be used by both those with disabilities and those without, featuring sensory-based activities for children to learn through playing. The field will offer leagues for those with special needs, from children to adults. During games, they will pair up with a “buddy”, who will both help and encourage them. Everybody winning “It’s all about everybody winning, everybody playing, and everybody getting ahead,” Bregel said. The project is currently taking bids with intention to begin construction in the spring and projected completion in fall 2016. More information about league start times, sign-ups, and grand opening will be available in 2016.

“We are Not Alone” with Special Needs Support Group for Parents Parent2Parent is a support group in Findlay designed to refresh and assist parents who care for children with special needs. "We focus on the parents in this group as parents often need their time as they give so much to help their children," said Antonia Faisant, founder of the group. "It's a great place to get some rest and hopefully refreshment for the month as Parent2Parent likes to make it special for them. I am a parent of a special needs child with multiple diagnoses and I know first hand what it is like to go through obtaining help for my daughter." Faisant, whose daughter, Mikayla, has Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Autism, started the group in January, 2009. Parent2Parent group members share triumphs, educational resources, and connect with other parents who understand. It's a place where parents of special needs children can go and truly say, "We are not alone.” Parent2Parent provides a main dish for a monthly meal, childcare (respite) at meeting times, and practical gift card giveaways - often from local businesses - such as gas, restaurant, and grocery store cards. The group also features resources, event information and guest speakers who discuss ways to help parents and their children. Group leaders also encourage parents to share their stories, which boosts outward advocacy for their children.

6

Parent2Parent meets the first Monday of every month at Findlay Evangelical Free Church from 6 to 8pm. Families have dinner together from 6 to 6:30pm followed by meeting time from 6:30 to 8pm. RSVP for childcare is appreciated the Friday prior to the meeting to ensure volunteers and/or meeting supplies. Parents also meet for lunch the second Tuesday of every month.-ER Connect with Parent2Parent through Facebook under keywords Parent2Parent- All Inclusive/Special Needs Support Group Findlay, Ohio. Dining Like it’s 1824 at Ohio Log House Newly opened and set to celebrate the holidays, Ohio Log House offers the chance to dine in a beautifully restored log cabin then visit the seasonal shop for that unique gift for someone special. The restaurant and gift shop opened in September, a manyyears-in-the-making dream for owners Eric and Jane VanRenterghem. Originally located in Southern Ohio, the VanRenterghems purchased the cabin in 2003 and relocated it to Mt. Cory. Ohio Log House has been used by the family since 2009, but Jane dreamed of opening it up to the public. After recently retiring from teaching she knew it was the perfect time to turn that dream into a reality. Jane opened the log house as a seasonal shop and restaurant to pursue her passions of decorating, cooking and baking.

“Every day, since I made the decision to move forward with making the Ohio Log House a reality, the word, ‘joy’ has crossed my path,” she said. “‘...That is what I want people to feel when they experience the cabin.” Ohio Log House offers meals strictly by reservation for groups of 8 or more. Both the shop and restaurant are open the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from September - December: 11am - 3pm and on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. Box lunches and baked goods are also available.-ER Ohio Log House is located at 2720 Township Road 25, Mt. Cory, OH. 419-722-7037. Pierce’s Crew Foundation

Easing the Financial Strain for Families in Need By Kerry Trautman

Findlay mother Heather Waite’s son, Pierce, was diagnosed with autism in the 4th grade - opening a door of new experiences and expenses.

Fun in a Flash Flashover Indoor Sports & Fun Center offers something for everyone—from toddlers to adults. Owners Brent and Cheryl Lauer converted the old train museum at 11600 County Road 99 into a one-of-a-kind complex with playing fields, an arcade, a café and a large meeting space. The facility has two playing fields that can be used for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, dodgeball, flag football and other turf sports. Leagues are forming now, though pickup games are also an option on many evenings. Flashover is also home to the Locker Soccer Academy, an innovative program for children ages 2-10 that teaches soccer and life skills. Parents can sign up their children for 8-week sessions. A variety of games can also be found at Flashover, such as Skeeball, Donkey Kong and Centipede. Players can win tickets that can be redeemed for fun prizes. Guests who work up an appetite can snack at the Firehouse 21 Café, which serves all-beef hot dogs, Bavarian-style hot pretzels, and more. The facility also boasts a meeting area that can accommodate up to 75 people. The space can be used for birthday parties, graduation, wedding or baby showers, or work meetings. Flashover can coordinate party activities (like dodgeball) or groups can chose to only rent the meeting space. — L-WP For more information visit flashoverindoor.com, visit them on Facebook under “Flashover Indoor Sports” or call 419-420-1575. Or call 419-420-1575.

As Waite advocated for Pierce, she became aware of the financial strain often placed on families like hers as they seek treatment programs and enrichment opportunities to help their children thrive. So, in 2013 Waite founded Pierce’s Crew Foundation to help families. “Our mission is to award scholarships to local families to help with the cost of therapies and programs that help those with special needs succeed,” Waite says. Pierce’s Crew holds family-friendly fundraising events such as their annual pancake breakfast held at Waldo Peppers each April (National Autism Awareness Month.) In August, they held a Family Skate Night at Rolling Thunder. Pierce’s next fundraiser—a Lego-themed event at Snapology—is

in the planning stages. In addition to its scholarship offerings, Pierce’s Crew also piloted a mentoring program called Pierce’s Pals at Jacobs School. With the support of Principal Andrea King and counselor Lyndsey Stephenson, Pierce’s Pals members attended lunchtime handson activities geared toward improved socialization. Pierce’s Crew Foundation, a committee of Awakening Minds Art, is a 501c3 non-profit organization, so donations are tax deductible. Scholarship applications are available online. For more information about the organization, volunteer opportunities, or upcoming events, visit the website, piercescrew.org, find Pierce’s Crew Foundation on Facebook, or email Heather Waite at heather@piercescrew.org.

Babies

Helps 4 Local Families By Jessica Kempf Wobblers

What services are actually available at Blanchard Valley Center? When Findlay Area Family recently sat down with Connie Ament, superintendent at BVC we found that this is a big question in the community. BVC personnel have even identified about 1,000 students enrolled in Hancock County’s city and county schools who are following an Individual Education Plan (IEP) but have not used their services.

The Center offers a wide range of assistance: early intervention, a home based specialist, a school and community resource specialist, Blanchard Valley School (preschool through high school), employment and volunteer experiences for adults, vocational and day services with van transportation for adults, respite care, case management and therapy. Let’s make sure that you and your child are not missing out! Here’s a closer look at BVC services and their effect on four local families:

AROUND THE CLOCK DAYCARE 920 McManness Ave., Findlay, OH 45840 419.423.5967

Research continues to prove the importance of early intervention in children with developmental delays. The services provided through early intervention programs, such as Help Me Grow, can lead to positive outcomes such as improved language and communication, cognitive development and social development. Local experts encourage parents to contact Help Me Grow for an evaluation if they have any concerns. Services are provided for free to eligible children under the age of 3. Logan Phillips and her family have had a great experience with their Early Intervention Specialist (EIS) through Blanchard Valley Center, Keely Wymer. Logan was born with Down Syndrome and is now 20 months old. Keely coordinates Logan’s care by coordinating and scheduling speech therapy, physical therapy and anything else she may need. According to Brittany, Logan’s mother, “The therapists perform different exercises with Logan while teaching us how to do them on our own. They provide our family with different tools and equipment that are useful in Logan’s therapy. It’s wonderful to have people who are trained and have experience working with our daughter. The fact that the therapists come to your home when you can’t get out means a lot. It’s a huge support system for us. They go above and beyond to help us.”

Through the School and Community Resource Service at Blanchard Valley Center, students are assisted in their transition from school into adulthood. This includes helping young adults to develop their talents and skills and connecting them with volunteer and employment opportunities in the community that interest them. Milton Deal, son of Cindy and James Deal, has thrived under the care of his School and Community Resource Specialist, Melanie Williams. Milton came from El Salvador to the U.S. when he was just 23 months old. He has a rare genetic condition named after him in which chromosomes #2 and #15 are switched. Milton started with Blanchard Valley Schools at age 3 and is now 19 years old. He works for the community at The Salvation Army, loves music, softball, basketball and bowling. When asked what Melanie does for the family, Cindy emphasizes her importance in Milton’s life; “We wouldn’t be where we are today without Melanie Williams. She has helped us advocate for services, get Milton’s green card, his social security card and she has overall been our righthand man. She goes to IEP meetings, she requested community service for Milton and even got him a job. She has known him since he was three and she has always stepped in on his behalf. Milton has grown up with Melanie and the sky is the limit for him.”

Family & Home Based Specialist

For children and individuals who have outgrown eligibility for the Early Intervention Program, a Home Based Specialist can provide services for a family member with special needs. The goal is to improve the quality of life for the family and individual through skill development, behavior management, training and more, depending on the individual needs. Cory St. Myers is the Home Based Specialist who works with siblings Christian (16), Emily (14), and Joshua (3), children of Christy and Robert Rushing. Christian and Emily were both diagnosed with autism at an early age and Joshua has developmental delays due to microdeletion syndrome. During their time together, Cory focuses on teaching communication skills, coping skills and strategies, promoting independence and giving children responsibilities. He uses a variety of teaching strategies including role play, picture schedules and token systems. When asked how the services have impacted their family, Christy shares, “Cory has really brought a lot to our family. We are not as frazzled and the kids have less meltdowns, which is such a blessing. Our situation has improved a lot since we began working with Cory. I don’t think I could manage without his services.

For more information, contact Blanchard Valley Center at 419-422-6387.

The Treece family

Day of Respite

Once a month, Blanchard Valley Center provides a Day of Respite for those served by the Hancock County Board of Developmental Disabilities and their siblings. The staff at BVC provides free specialized care to children ages 3-15, giving parents a couple of hours to themselves. Christina and John Treece have six children and their two youngest, Gatlin (6) and Draiman (5) both have autism. The boys have made amazing progress at Blanchard Valley Schools and Christina describes why the Day of Respite is so helpful to families: “We as parents enjoy getting a short break to do errands or other things that are easier done without the kids. Most special needs parents, myself included, struggle finding a suitable sitter to accommodate their child’s special needs so it is really great that BVC offers this program. My boys also really enjoy the playtime with other kids. For those who wonder what exactly their children would do during this time, Christina points out, “They have several games and activities set up in the school gym for the kids. They even go outside and play on the playground. It’s great for the kids to play with peers. They also get to do a lot of physical activity, which is good for sensory needs and helps kids be able to calm and focus better later.

Upcoming Days of Respite: Nov. 21 and Dec. 19th from 10am-noon. For more information or to register, contact Cory at 419-422-8173.

Amber Holbrook

Findlay mom competes for daughter with Autism By Laurie Wurth-Pressel

Six years ago, Amber and Craig Holbrook started a family. Like every young couple, they longed for normal and healthy children. But God had other plans. The couple’s first child, Cailyn, was born with severe autism. Doctors diagnosed her when she was just 18 months old and they didn’t offer much hope for her social or mental development. “We took it extremely hard,” says Amber. “That first year after (the diagnosis) was the worst time in my life.” Over the last five years, the Holbrooks have been on a journey. They’ve traveled from anger to peace and from sadness to joy. They’ve grown closer as a family and been strengthened in their faith. The biggest blessings along the way have been Cailyn’s amazing progress and the addition of their son, Dalton, now four years old. And the biggest surprise? Amber’s incredible transformation from an out-ofshape mom to an American Ninja Warrior.

Transforming to Ninja Warrior Every day, Amber watched Cailyn struggle in therapy and at school to master

simple skills. One day, it struck her that “we were asking a lot of Cailyn, but not a lot of ourselves.” When Amber saw a promotion for a 5K run to benefit autism research, she knew she had to participate. Physical fitness wasn’t her thing. In fact, she never exercised and didn’t even have the stamina to run for two minutes straight. Yet she welcomed the chance to push herself. She couldn’t remove Cailyn’s struggles, but she could journey alongside her by taking on her own challenges. “I kept Cailyn in mind the whole time,” she says. “It became a way I could fight for her and with her.” After successfully completing the 5K, Amber was on the lookout for a new challenge. One night, while watching American Ninja Warrior with her husband, she found it. “I told Craig that I thought I could be on this show,” she says. “He laughed and said ‘you’re kidding me, right?’” Amber wasn’t kidding. She began training two to three days a week with Jim Steffen at XT Fitness in Findlay. “It was a total lifestyle change for me,” she says. “I changed my diet and took steps to get my body ready.”

Amber as American Ninja Warrior competitor

Picked to compete Thousands of people apply to be a contestant on the show, but few are accepted. Amber couldn’t believe her luck when she received a phone call from the show’s producers saying she made it. “I started jumping up and down and screaming,” she says. Amber appeared on the show this past August. She completed part of the obstacle course, regaining her balance on the tricky snake crossing, but ultimately she slid off the wind chimes. “It was an amazing experience,” she says. “I hung on as long as I could for Cailyn.”

Since her appearance on American Ninja Warrior, Amber has connected with many moms who have a child with autism. She is happy to offer support, and most importantly, hope. “Doctors told us that Cailyn would never talk, but today she is talking and expressing her emotions. Everyone is amazed by her progress,” says Amber. “I will keep going on American Ninja Warrior as often as they ask me in order to share Cailyn’s story. Right now, I am her voice. But someday she will be able to share her own story.”

GG’s Corner: Homemade Food and Lovely Lamps Cozy hide-away restaurant in Vanlue By Sarah Mayle

GG’s Corner

300 Buffalo St. Vanlue, OH 45890 Hours: Sunday 7am to 2pm, Monday to Wednesday 6am to 2pm, and Thursday to Saturday 6am to 9pm. Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take out available, banquet room available for rent. Find them on FB under keywords GG’s Corner

GG’s Corner, the only restaurant in Vanlue, has been open for about a year and a half. In that time, the eatery has provided not only delicious, home-cooked food in a cozy atmosphere, but a nice gathering place for villagers to relax. I asked my kids (ages 7 and 10) what stood out most to them a few weeks after dining at GG’s Corner. Both recalled enjoying the food, but what really stood out were the lamps. Funny, but that was something I remembered too - the stainedglass, mosaic-style, flower lamps, hanging brightly above the tables. Combine those with the ornate, silver-plated bar area dotted with red-topped stools, options to sit at high tables by the window, booth and table seating, and lots of locals enjoying their meals alongside you, and you’ve got a recipe for ‘cozy.’ GG’s Corner is owned by Janice Brossia and her daughters, Jaclyn, Jessica, and Toni. As a little boy, Janice’s grandson used to call her “GG,” and the name of the restaurant was born.

Menu Options Galore

GG’s has a nice array of choices throughout the menu, and I had a hard time deciding what to get. There are several appetizers, such as mozzarella stix, cheese bacon fries and fried mushrooms. Salad options include a grilled chicken, chef or veggie, with a variety of dressings.

The Short Course Kid-friendly: Yes

To avoid wait: Consider coming at off-times for meals such as 10am for breakfast, 1pm for lunch or 7pm for dinner Noise level: Moderate There are several burgers to choose from, as well as a number of sandwiches with your choice of bread - white, wheat, rye, sourdough or Texas toast. Part-owner Jaclyn Brossia said the Reuben and breaded veal sandwiches are most popular. Soups and eight dinner choices that come with two sides adorn the menu, including chop steak, chicken parmesan, veal parmesan and perch. GG’s also offers specials almost daily, and don’t forget the freshlymade Amish pies with or without ice cream, fried ice cream and other desserts. We chose to sit at one of the high tables by the window, which rewarded us during our meal with the sight of a giant combine, straddling both sides of the road, rambling right through the village. And, after a fair amount of indecision, I chose the special of the evening - all you can eat walleye. My kids, as usual, went with the chicken strips and fries, with my son adding a side salad. My husband selected a burger with fries for his meal.

My walleye was lovely, cooked perfectly with crisp breading, while the fish inside was soft and flaky. My meal came with cole slaw, which I don’t always like, but this cole slaw was creamy and sweet and I really enjoyed it. The fries were good too. The kids gave the fries and chicken strips a high ranking - impressive - as they truly are chicken strip connoisseurs. Ben, the 10-year-old, also remarked that his salad was nice and fresh and he really liked the ranch dressing. My husband added onion, lettuce and tomato to his burger and he enjoyed it, prepared just the way he ordered it. He said it was a good burger and enjoyed his fries as well.

Dessert Goodness

We of course had to check out the pie, so I ordered a slice of pumpkin with vanilla ice cream, and my husband ordered cherry, also with vanilla ice cream. I think I need to order pie ala mode from now on - what a refreshing, delicious combination of sweet,

Bathroom amenities: New and very nice, clean, and changing table High chairs? Yes, and booster seats

Got milk? Yes, white and chocolate Kids’ menu? Yes

Food allergy concerns? GG’s does not use peanut oil. Let your server know and they will do whatever they can to help you

creamy goodness. My husband remarked that he was disappointed that they didn’t have any apple pie but ended up being glad, the cherry was just that good. The kids delighted in bowls of vanilla ice cream, and all was well with the world. GG’s Corner is a great place to bring the family. Affordable and cozy, it left me feeling content with a full belly, visions of lovely lamps, and some well-spent quality time with my favorite people.
