Guitar Ranch
Where in Findlay can you purchase a guitar, learn to play it, and have it repaired? Guitar Ranch! For the past 23 years, customers from all over Ohio have come to Guitar Ranch for their quality and expertise. Owners Debbie Frye and George Head promise to only carry quality instruments in their store, if you purchase from Guitar Ranch you can be sure your guitar is going to sound great for a long time! Every instrument purchased is unpacked, set up, and tested to be sure it’s properly working before sold to the customer. They also offer lessons for children, teens, and adults.
Everyone seems to know that the symbol for Gemini is “the twins.” As parents you will be well aware of that as soon as they open their eyes and move their little hands and feet and explore the world. They are very inquisitive and curious. They literally need “one for each hand” when you give them toys or snacks. They should be taught a second language as soon as possible, even sign language. They are seldom moody and can be counted on to explore new places, new toys, and meet new people whether old or young. You may need to encourage them to finish whatever they start before losing interest and moving on to something else. They are happy to go to Day Care or Pre-School because of their desire to be busy and because they see different people and surroundings. They have some difficulty going to sleep at night because their little eyes just don’t want to close… soft music might help… no matter what their age. Having a Gemini child is like getting two for the price of one.

the first time everyone is able to come out for a festival and celebrate the warm weather, and we think people really look forward to that.”
The 22nd annual outdoor festival will feature live entertainment, libations, and delicious food from area food vendors, as well as a Kids Zone, open from 6-8:30pm. At the Kids Zone, families can enjoy fun, safe exhibits from organizations such as Snapology, the Hancock County Literacy Coalition, Awakening Minds Art, and more. About 4,000 people typically attend Boogie! On Main.
Held on South Main Street between Main Cross and Crawford Streets from 6pm-12am, Boogie! is organized by The Arts Partnership, with its earnings used for arts education programming. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children, and free for children in strollers. Tickets can be purchased at the festival entrance at West Main Cross and Crawford streets.

Newcomers’ Social Club for New and NotsoNew Whether you are new to town, or to another stage of life, you can find fun and friendship in Findlay’s Newcomers’ Club. Started in 1989 as a way for new residents to learn about the community and make friends, it has evolved into a social club that has play groups, Bunco, progressive dinners and other activities aimed at community building. As the group starts its yearly membership drive this month, incoming president Erin Easley explains you don’t have to be new to the Findlay area to take advantage of the Newcomers’ Club. Need to know which doctors are accepting new patients? Want to find out which restaurants are great for kids? Members probably know. “Really anyone can be a member,” said Easley, who herself moved from Lexington three years ago. “Some members are newcomers, but some members have been in the group for years.” While the group accepts new members all year long, the annual membership drive starts in May. For more information, visit the group’s website, findlaynewcomers.com, its Facebook page, or check out social networking app BigTent. —RB
Zipline over Zebras The Toledo Zoo has added a new Expedition Africa! Aerial Adventure Course. The $2.75 million project, constructed in the midst of the zoo’s Africa! exhibit, allows participants an assortment of available activities. Zipline riders soar down a 760 feetlong, 80 feethigh ride over the exhibit animals. Freeflight participants will experience a controlled drop from 80 feet above ground. Quick Drop entails a 30 foot controlled drop off the main tower. The Challenge Course is a series of physical and mental obstacles. Sky Bridge consists of three, 250 feet-long footbridges with dynamic views 30 feet above exhibit animals such as giraffes, kudus, wildebeest, ostriches, and zebras. The Tower Ridge Giraffe Experience requires a separate fee ($4 for 4 lettuce leaves, $40 for 12) which allows access to raised decks with giraffe feeding stations. It is scheduled to open May 6. All other Expedition Africa! Aerial Adventure Course attractions are scheduled to open Memorial Weekend, and will operate, weather permitting, through Labor Day. Payment is required before participation, with online reservations recommended for the Challenge Course, due to limited capacity. Package options are available for groups of 75 or more. A First in Findlay: Gillig Winery When you think of Findlay, you think of wine-making, right? Well...Gillig Winery hopes to make that happen. Owned by Findlay residents Trevor and Nikki Gillig, the business held its grand opening in April at their cozy location, 1720 Northridge Rd. The Gilligs’ motivation to open the business came when they were enjoying a visit to a Michigan winery overlooking verdant vineyards, and noticed it was for sale. They were “inspired by their passion for wine,” Niki Gillig said. While grape-growing itself wasn’t a task they were interested in, the seed was sown to someday build a wine bottling business. After research, they decided to import juices from all over the world to customize their own wines. Originally from Tiffin, the Gilligs chose to live in and open their business in Findlay because of its economic diversity and its optimal size as a “bigger-small-town.” Gillig Winery, 1720 Northridge Rd. 419-408-3230. gilligwinery.com
Stix Relocates for a Sleek New Look Downtown restaurant Stix re-opened in March a few doors from its previous location in a stylish new spot at 110 E. Sandusky St. Owner and Chef Renz Salanga explained that a better layout and better visibility motivated the move to the former Revolver restaurant location. Décor is contemporary and modern, with an artistic feel. Stix also now serves beer, wine, and liquor. The menu at Stix can be described as Asian-based, with influence from other world cuisines such as Cuban, Hawaiian, Mexican, French, and more. Fresh, locally sourced ingredients make up the unique chef-driven menu, frequently updated to offer new and interesting dishes. Customer favorites include the Hot Stone Bibimbap, Crispy Brussel Sprouts, and Watermelon Feta Salad. “We try to keep it minimal with décor and food, to focus on what the dish is about,” Salanga said.
Make sure your business is featured in this special section!

Hula up High at Alexandria’s
Things continue to move up at Alexandria’s—up to the roof this time. The popular craft brewery at 132 E. Crawford St. has added La Vista, a rooftop bar overlooking downtown Findlay, with a capacity of about fifty people. “The overall feel” says owner Mike Mallot, “is that you just stepped off a cruise ship in Cancun.” A pared-down list of food items will be available, adapted from Alexandria’s taproom menu—with gourmet burgers, sandwiches, and surprises like chicken n’ waffles and poutine. Hours involved

printed photos of Ryan from his first year and hung them on a banner, to show how much he has changed – going along with the theme Time Flies. We also had a Wishing Tree, where guests could write down wishes for him and memories of him, since he’s too young to remember this party on his own.

Hours involved: I spent a few weeks planning, and the day of the party I was busy all day. Favorite memory: My favorite part was gathering
all of his loved ones together to celebrate. I’m a single mom, so it’s really important to me that he knows how loved and special he is.
Arron
Birt hda y Guid e
Age: 7 Theme: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Hosted by: Jason and Melissa Greer of Findlay
Goody Bags
Décor
Cake by: Creation Cakes in Fostoria
I painted a brick wall backdrop with Arron’s name made to look like graffiti. Other projects included felt TMNT masks for all the kids, turtle shells and manhole covers made from dollar store pans, a cityscape centerpiece for the kids table made from black boxes and paper, and I cut mutant ooze for the goodie table out of felt.
I don’t do normal goody bags, but rather decorations that the kids can take home. For this party, I made turtle shells, masks, TMNT weapons, and a pizza box to fill up with goodies from the goodie table. Goodies that double as decoration gets you the most bang for your buck!
Activities: We had a TMNT piñata, toss the pizzas into the pizza boxes, a timed game of filling pizza boxes and delivering them, and each guest had a homemade costume with a coordinating weapon that they played with during the party. Hours involved: I spent several months planning a party,
scouring Pinterest and dollar stores, and making as much as I can myself to save tons of money.
Favorite memory: My kids absolutely LOVE their parties and look forward to and talk about them all year! I love seeing the reaction on their faces when they walk in for the first time and see it all done. It is definitely worth all of the hard work and time it took to create it! www.findlayfamily.com • May 2016 •

She and her 5-year-old son, Saud, have been in the United States since August of 2015 and she is currently studying to get her Master’s Degree in Education from The University of Findlay. Noorah’s husband, Abdulrahman, passed away in 2014 and she and Saud currently live with Noorah’s brother, Mohammad, also a student at the University of Findlay.
Biggest difference between Findlay and home: Family is
most important in Saudi Arabia and we gather together with family on the weekends. Women don’t live on their own in Saudi Arabia like they do in the U.S. We live with our parents until we are married. Women don’t drive in Saudi Arabia, and schools separate boys from girls, including universities.
Favorite Findlay spots: “The Cinema,” or
Carmike 12 in Findlay is one of my favorite places to go for some “me time.” My favorite place to go with Saud is Riverside Park and Pool where we both enjoy swimming. And without hesitation, Kohl’s is my favorite place to shop in Findlay.
al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and International Day, three national holidays in Saudi Arabia. At home, we have a big party for international day full of traditional dancing, wearing green (our country’s color) and taking time away from school and work.
Your top parenting trick:When teaching my son, Saud, something new, such as writing a new word, I tell him to try it first for himself then I will help if he needs it.
Lasting impressions and challenges between cultures: I have
a lot more responsibility here in the U.S. It’s a big challenge. I have to do everything on my own including going
to school, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of my son. Back home I lived with my parents after my husband died and had a lot of help.
Favorite Recipe: Chicken Kabsa This is a spicy chicken and rice dish that includes onions, tomatoes and many different spices. Noorah brought spices from Saudi Arabia so that she can make it regularly here in the United States with the flavors from home. Community members and readers are encouraged to submit ideas for the column. Know someone our readers might like to meet or have an example of cultural diversity that we can share and learn from? A cultural tradition you enjoy here: Thanksgiving. The students and
faculty got together to make and eat a meal here on campus. It was really nice. I also enjoyed Christmas break because we went home to Saudi Arabia to visit.

Mother’s Day is May 8 this year. It became an official U.S. holiday in 1914 with devoted daughter Anna Jarvis credited as The Mother of Mother’s Day. Here’s what makes it special for four local moms.

Although they don’t generally go out, Mother’s Day has always been a day where she can take time for herself and enjoy some downtime. “My husband (Ben) and my boys usually make me breakfast and let me sleep in. My boys make me homemade cards and I love to see their faces when they give them to me. Sometimes I even get flowers for Mother’s Day. The best part of the day is spending it with my family!”

Lace up your sneakers and get ready to have some colorful fun at the annual NAMI Walk and Color Me Happy 5K. This signature event for Hancock County’s National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) takes place on May 21st and raises money to support programs that empower individuals and families impacted by a mental health condition. With an emphasis on FUN and the joy of getting doused in head-to-toe color for a good cause, this is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy together.
Providing Support for Mental Health Conditions
Michelle Huff, executive director of NAMI of Hancock County, said one in four families are impacted by a mental health condition. NAMI provides free educational programs, support and advocacy to those individuals and families and works with local law enforcement to help workers recognize and respond to mental health conditions. The NAMI Walk began in 2011 and the Color Me Happy 5K was added in 2015, with a great turnout. “It’s a fun thing to do as a family and exercise is good for physical and mental well-being. Through this event we help fight the stigma for those suffering,” Huff said.
The Race and the After-party Details
Color Me Happy takes place at Riverside Park on May 21 with registration beginning at 8am and the untimed race beginning at 9:30. The cost is $40 for adults, $10 for children ages 6-17, and free for kids five and under. Findlay High School’s Steel Drum Band, Pantasia, will perform from 8-9am and Time Warp Mobile DJ will play music throughout the run. The post-race party will include food, free face painting, prizes, a bounce house, games, and, of course, more color. So grab your white t-shirts and bring the kids for a day of fun! Oler’s Bar & Grill: Beauty on the Inside Tastes to Make any Tex Mex Fan Sing
Oler’s Bar & Grill
By Sarah Mayle
708 Lima Ave., Findlay 419-423-2846 Hours: 11am-11pm Monday-Thursday; Friday-Saturday 11am-12am; Sunday 11am-10pm FB under keywords “Oler’s Bar and Grill” Olersbarandgrill.com Takeout and extensive catering options available Oler’s Bar & Grill is one of those places in Findlay that if you haven’t been there you could almost be embarrassed. It’s a not-so-well-kept secret that Oler’s serves some of the best Tex Mex food and margaritas around. Embrace the outside of the building, the reward awaits inside.
“When I originally got the place in 1981, I had plans to work on the outside of the building,” Co-Owner Bob Oler said of the exterior of the restaurant. “But it was like a drawing card. Everybody liked it that way and we just left it, and so we’re delightfully tacky.”
As of May, this “delightfully tacky” restaurant beloved by Findlay, will celebrate 35 years - and they’ve done some renovating to boot. When the carryout that used to be attached to Oler’s closed, Oler and Co-Owner Debbie Cooper jumped at the opportunity for added space. Opened in December, the addition can seat 84 people, bringing the restaurant’s full capacity to 170. It includes a large bar area, table seating, a new entrance, flat screen TVs, and along a window area, bar stools that once resided inside long-time downtown eatery Miller’s Luncheonette. Oler said they will soon begin building a deck by the glass garage-style door near the bar that can be opened in pleasant weather. Other recent upgrades include

Reservation are limited. a new website (olersbarandgrill.com) and the addition of eight delicious new signature sauces, made in-house, that can be added to any entree at no additional charge. One of the things Oler is most proud of is the cleanliness of the restaurant’s kitchen.
A Look Inside
I’ll have to come clean here and admit that when my family and I paid a visit, this was only my second time at Oler’s. (I know…) Walking in the new entrance, I immediately noticed the pleasant natural light streaming in through the garage door and windows; the addition is impressive. As we wound through a few eating areas to our table in the older section, I took in the fun atmosphere - from the colorful Mexican decor, to the black-and-redtiled floors, to the tabletops with ads, and the people occupying just about every table, happily eating away.
Tex Mex at its Best
Oler’s menu is extensive, including sections for several appetizers, sandwiches, specialties, burgers, Foods of New Mexico which boast “It’s all about the chile,” soups, specialty salads, Gringo’s Corner for those who may not be big into Mexican food, Delightfully Combo’D, A La Carte, sides and extras, Signature Sauces, a kids menu, and desserts.
Taking the advice of a friend who is a native Findlayite and seasoned Oler’s veteran, I ordered an original Oler’s creation - the Tostizza. It’s a flour tortilla fried crispy, topped with a layer of refritos (refried beans), seasoned ground beef, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, another flour tortilla with mild salsa, melted Cheddar Jack cheeses and garnished with black ripe olives. Delicious! The crispy, fried shell added a nice texture and I enjoyed with each bite a creaminess that contrasted with the crisp shell and cold, fresh lettuce and tomatoes.
My husband ordered the Fajita Salad, which is a flour tortilla bowl filled with iceberg lettuce salad mix, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, homemade croutons, tomato wedge, and a hard-boiled egg. He chose steak over chicken in the salad and enjoyed that, when he’d eaten enough of the salad, he was down to the crunchy tortilla and mixed it with the veggies.
Taking a Chance
This was a valiant night of eating for the kids. Not just one, but BOTH actually ordered Mexican food as opposed to chicken fingers and fries! Gimme some of that!
My 10-year-old son ordered two flour tacos with beef, lettuce, and onion, and a side of Spanish rice. He even put the rice in his tacos and proclaimed several times,

Kids’ menu? Nice variety and a great value. Main dish with a side, drink, and dessert for $3.99.
Food allergy concerns? Owner Bob Oler said they will do whatever they can to meet your dietary needs - no salt or to use gluten-free corn tortillas, for example. Let your server know. “Oh, this is soooo good.” He was also a big fan of the complimentary chips and salsa we received as an appetizer.
My 7-year-old daughter ate a flour taco of chicken, lettuce and cheese with a side of Spanish rice. She munched on her taco happily, but the Spanish rice was a little spicy for her. The key here, is she actually tried it! Oler’s kids menu is a great value - only $3.99 for an entree, side, drink and dessert. The kids both ordered fried ice cream to wrap up their meals, and lucky me, my daughter shared a bite with Mom. Mmmm...such fried, refreshing goodness - a novel way to end an enjoyable meal.
