Kalahari Resort Sensory-Friendly Kalahari Resorts has made its Sandusky property “Sensory Friendly” with the help of Sensory City, a Bostonbased nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families and children with disabilities. Kalahari is certifying its employees in sensory awareness and solutions to help accommodate adults, youth and children with sensory needs such as autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, PTSD, dementia, etc. This will be the first resort in the Midwest to be fully “Sensory Friendly Certified.” Kalahari has created a sensory room where individuals who experience sensory overload can enter to retreat from overstimulation. Upon request, the Kalahari staff will supply sensory kits, safety kits and comfort kits to guests.

Hancock Park District to Reclaim Wetlands Beginning this summer, the Hancock Park District will begin reclaiming approximately 100 acres, formerly leased as marginal farmland, at Oakwoods Nature Preserve. The district received two grants totaling close to $1.4 million for the project, including $651,800 from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and $753,000 from H2Ohio.

The projects, which will be completed by 2021, will have long-term benefits of nutrient reduction for Aurand Run and the Blanchard River, as well as providing a wetland habitat for breeding birds and a migratory stopover. “This is a great educational project with high visibility,” says Chad Carroll, Hancock Park District Natural Resource Manager. “The end result will be to teach the importance of wetlands and all the critters and plants associated with them.”

North Baltimore Theatre Reopens

Thanks to a local entrepreneur, the Virginia Theatre in North Baltimore reopened its doors in February, after closing in 2018 despite its more than 80 year history.

Shawn Benjamin, the new owner, was motivated to reopen the theatre by nostalgia and a sense of community.

The ticket and concession prices remain extremely reasonable, and the theatre is available for rental for parties and events.

Open Arms Hosts a Fundraiser “Chefs Take a Stand to End Domestic Violence” is a fundraising and food tasting event being planned to benefit Open Arms in Findlay. It will take place on Friday, April 24, from 5-8pm at the Old Millstream Centre at the Hancock County Fairgrounds.

Hancock County’s best home cooks, restaurant chefs and bakers will concoct kid-inspired dishes and desserts to tempt all palates. In the past year, Open Arms provides services to approximately 12,000 Hancock County residents. Come out and support this non-profit!

The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, in collaboration with the United Way of Hancock County, is hosting Community Conversations 2020, a dialogue with members of the community to determine strengths and weaknesses and a path forward. “We talked with more than 1,000 Hancock County residents in 2017 and we’re hoping to build off of that in 2020,” said Brian Treece, program director at The Community Foundation. “(In 2017) the community gave us five priority areas--housing; mental health/substance abuse; transportation; safety; and workforce/financial stability. Now, we want to talk specifically about those areas and what residents think can and should be done with these community priorities.” Community Conversations 2020 will take place March 29-April 5 throughout Hancock County. The Community Foundation and United Way are seeking groups of 8-12 people to participate in the conversations, which typically last 60-90 minutes. Findlay Superintendent to Step Down Ed Kurt, superintendent of Findlay City Schools, is stepping down, at the end of July, after 6 years in Findlay, from his position at to return as superintendent of his former school district, Margaretta Local Schools. According to Kurt, the move is in line with his “true priorities of faith, family and then career” as it will bring him within 10 miles of five of his six grandchildren.

Kurt implemented several programs and initiatives during his tenure in Findlay, including trauma-informed care and Leader in Me. “I am excited about the direction that Findlay City Schools is heading,” he wrote, “and I am thankful for the opportunity to serve … and work with such great people.” The Findlay school board has launched a search for a new superintendent.

After a successful 29 year career in banking, Pat Garlock took the helm of AAA Findlay in 2015. AAA Findlay has been part of the Findlay community since 1938 and currently has 16,000 members. In addition to being a world leader in emergency services, AAA offers a wide-range of insurance products, financial services, travel planning (a full service travel agency), travel money cards and abundant discounts and perks.

What inspired you to become a business leader? I’ve always been very independent and full of dreams.

My mom made us believe we could do whatever we set our hearts and minds to. My dad raised my sisters and I to never let our gender be an excuse or stop us from doing any job. He taught us to work on our own cars, plow the fields and mow the lawn. He was way ahead of the women’s movement!

What are the most important traits in a leader? All leaders are better leaders if they started at the bottom and worked their way up. It’s also important to be organized and on task. And I believe the best leaders and employees are not motivated by money, but by doing the right thing.

Director, Millstream Career Center Business Owner, Trends! on Main Pam heads the Millstream Career Center that serves high school students from four school districts and provides them with 16 career field options. She’s worked in education since 1994. She also owns Trends! on Main, a local boutique that opened in 2007, which sells jewelry, handbags, scarfs, clothing and formal wear. She and her staff shop all over the country to find the latest fashions to bring back to Northwest Ohio.

What inspired you to become an education leader and to start your own business? I’ve always loved education as my mother worked as a teacher/tutor at St. Michael School where she founded both their kindergarten readiness and kindergarten programs. She inspired me to work hard and be dedicated to the students in our community. I’ve always loved retail too, but as a mother of four and educator, nights and weekends were difficult.

By owning my own store, I can be the buyer and hire young ladies to work the hours that are not conducive to my schedule. Although it is hard work and sometimes I am a bit overscheduled, I am proud to be a business owner.

What do you like best about doing business in Findlay/Hancock County? The people— the customers and the friendship I have built with so many people. We love our downtown!

What are the most important traits in an entrepreneur/leader?

You have to be organized and willing to do what it takes to get the job done.

You have to relinquish control and allow others to share ideas. Many times ideas come from those around me and I have to trust them and support them. I see myself more as a guide and facilitator vs. a "boss." I’m blessed by those I get to share my hopes and dreams with.

What do you love the most about what you do? Every day is different.

I am surrounded by good people who want to work hard to better those around them. It doesn't get any better than that!

What do you love the most about what you do? AAA is like 5 or 6 businesses wrapped into one. It is hard to get bored around here. I also have an amazing team at AAA, and they make it fun.

What are your future plans? As long as my passion for the job stays strong, I’ll be here. Also, my family is the most important part of my life, so spending time with them is a priority.

Finally, I want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa before I am too old. I told my dad back in the 1960s when we lived in Africa that I was going to climb that mountain someday. I want to keep that promise.

What do you like best about doing business in Findlay/ Hancock County? We are big enough to have major corporations and mediumsized businesses here, yet small enough to have a true “hometown spirit.” We have leaders who work hard to make this a great place to live, and you don’t find that everywhere.

Previously she worked in the recruitment industry for ADP for 12 years developing and managing technology for branding.

What inspired you to start your own business? It was a lifelong dream of mine to have my own storefront. Through the years, I tossed around many ideas, but finally settled on a clothing boutique. When I travel, my favorite thing to do is visit little boutiques.

What are the most important traits in an entrepreneur? You have to be able to wear many hats. From finances to inventory management to social media, I often do it all! Also, you have to be open to change and be fluid. If something isn’t working, throw it out the window and go back to the drawing board.

What do you love the most about what you do? Building relationships and serving the amazing women in this

community. We have the ability to touch so many people, and that’s been a bright spot in my business. I also love being able to give back. So many people have supported us, so when we have the funds to do it, we try to make an impact by giving back.

Owner, Dark Horse Restaurant and Olers Bar and Grille Neeli owns the Dark Horse restaurant that features many “from scratch” family recipes and she and her partner, Chris Keller, recently purchased the Tex-Mex restaurant Olers, which has been family-owned for 40 years. Neeli started working in her family’s restaurant business at age 18 and worked her way up to management and ownership. She double majored in business and marketing at the University of Findlay.

What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? Working with family for so long, it became a way of life.

When I was approached by my Dad to purchase, I couldn’t say no. This is all I knew, and being a small business owner is something that always interested me.

What are the most important traits in an entrepreneur? A strong work ethic, which is something I definitely learned from working with my

Dad. Also, determination and passion, because owning a restaurant in this town is hard due to the overwhelming number of them.

What do you love the most about what you do? I love the freedom to do what I want and be creative with the food we serve. Having two restaurants that are completely different opens up my creativity in my foody world!

What are your plans for the future? Olers has the capability to bring new and exciting events to the community. We are planning to bring back the old bar at Olers and create a craft margarita bar.

Joseph Rowan

Owner of Vivir Modern Mexican

Impact: Bringing authentic Mexican cuisine to downtown dining

Joseph Rowan fell in love with the cuisine and culture of Mexico during a trip to Los Cabos. That culinary experience planted a seed that led to the creation of Vivir Modern Mexican.

Vivir celebrated its one year anniversary in January, bringing authentic Mexican cuisine with premier ingredients to downtown Findlay. As a young entrepreneur, Joseph has learned the ins and outs of the business world through the experience of opening a restaurant. With a passion for his work and business savvy, he proves that hard work and determination pay off.

A Findlay native, Joseph graduated from Arlington High School in 2009. He went on to attend Northern Kentucky University and Bowling Green State University, graduating with a degree in business administration and a minor in human resources. A skilled website and logo designer, he’s found those attributes to be incredibly useful as a small business owner. Joseph and his wife Melanie’s oneyear-old daughter, Eloise, was born just prior to the opening of Vivir.

What is your favorite place to eat in Findlay? Stix.

That has been my office because it’s right down the alley from Vivir.

A whirlwind learning experience Joseph learned that persistence is a key factor in getting things done. It took him about a year of knocking on doors and networking to get to the restaurant’s opening day. “In the business world, it’s not about sitting around and waiting, it’s about going out there and getting. I know that sounds super cliche, but that is exactly what you need to do,” he explains.

The restaurant’s first year has been a whirlwind, Joseph explains, adding, “We’ve made mistakes and we’ve learned from them. We have adapted.

You can establish a menu to begin with not knowing how people will respond to it, and then you’ve got to listen to the people. They are the clientele, the ones you’re there for.”

“If we have an idea, we can initiate it the next day. And it’s just great to see that immediate response, whether the response is bad or good. You’re learning each time you’re doing something and you are adapting new products. Ultimately, that’s my favorite thing.”

Cochinita pibil with red pickled onion is one example, a delicious creation that Joseph enjoys. “The flavors match so perfectly. We use the entire pork shoulder and it’s simmered in amazing spices all day. Then it’s paired with a house pickled red onion and cilantro. You don’t need a bunch of ingredients to make something delicious,” he says.

Joseph’s passion for excellent food and gathering people together make Vivir a fun dining experience. With many new ideas to try, and a focus on his customers, Findlay is fortunate to have a passionate entrepreneur like Joseph Rowan in our midst.

Over the river and north of town, a gem of a restaurant awaits. The Dark Horse Restaurant opened in 2006 promising the best breakfast in town; a big claim for an unassuming place— especially given the number of quality breakfast joints in Findlay! Such a bold statement was worth a thorough investigation.

As we sat down, our server buzzed over to the table and took our drink orders while reminding us that all breakfast orders needed to be in by 11am. As she left to retrieve our drinks, we looked at the menu. And what a menu it is!

From breakfast sandwiches and hearty breakfasts to breakfast pizza and a section dubbed “Breakfast in Mexico,” the choices are impressive. Well-loved favorites appeared alongside Scotch eggs.

Items usually found on Mexican restaurant menus (burritos, chimichangas and quesadillas) are recast with breakfast ingredients. Meanwhile, “Sides & Such” offered additional intriguing options

including smaller portions of other meals.

Our server visited the table several more times before we felt ready to make our selections. Before we did, however, we ordered a mimosa and a spicy Bloody Mary. Yep, Dark Horse has those, too.

It’s also worth noting that the Dark Horse is not just a breakfast place.

The restaurant serves food all day long, with a delicious menu of appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, Italian specialties, sandwiches and burgers— a wonderful variety.

Order breakfast by 11am Just before the clock struck 11am, our server visited one last time and we ordered a long list of items--Scotch eggs, a side of corned beef hash, a veggie omelet, a chicken chipotle omelet, and the chicken fried steak. Bread choices included sourdough, biscuits, and English muffin. With that tantalizing array of dishes, we ordered something for everyone— a vegetarian option, a Mexican dish, and a diner favorite.

When our dishes arrived, Jeremy and I immediately commented on the generous portions. My omelet nearly filled the entire oval plate while his country fried steak was almost covered by a more than ample serving of gravy. And on every plate, large piles of hash browns filled the remaining empty space. Armed with a hearty appetite, we dug in. The corned beef hash offered classic texture, crispy edges, and saltiness that I remember from my childhood. Jeremy sliced open the Scotch egg to reveal its layers of

The sausage was delicious— salty and crispy in all the best ways. (And, notably, it disappeared!) My veggie omelet was bursting with beautifully sautéed fresh veggies. During my pregnancy with Leland— eleven years ago— I lost my love of mushrooms, but the omelet reignited that former love with a whole new passion. Perfectly cooked and incredibly flavorful, those mushrooms also played a starring role in the chicken chipotle omelet, as a perfect balance to the spicy, smoky chipotle sauce. Jeremy’s chicken fried steak delivered on the Dark Horse promise of “Best Breakfast in Town” (aka B.B.I.T.) with crispy breading, tender steak and delectable sausage gravy. Jeremy’s opinion on the dish? Simply stated, “delicious.” High praise from a man who loves sausage gravy, sampling it wherever he visits!

B.B.I.T. indeed The Dark Horse delivered on their bold claim. Not only did their food please my breakfast-loving husband, but I also loved it (a girl who prefers a strict diet of coffee and chocolate for breakfast. No, I’m not kidding). Those proclivities made us the perfect pair to test the Dark Horse’s claim of “Best Breakfast in Town.”
