What’s on the top of your list for Santa this year? Publisher/Editor in Chief
November 22December 20 By Sue Lovett Sagittarian kids are always happy if they are given “space” to do their own thing. They are very curious and the most creative sign of the zodiac. They have super imaginations and are content to build, cut, paste and make some of their own cards and paper necklaces. They are fascinated to hear about foreign countries and may try to dig a hole to China in the backyard. They love animals, especially horses. They seem to take on every challenge, which can be difficult for parents to understand. Parents should remember that they resent strict time limits. Try to give them a 15 minute warning when meals will be served, when it is time to go to bed or to clean up their area. Often the Sagittarian child will spin a globe to find places around the world. Learning a second language (even sign language) is fun as long as they do not have to sit still for any length of time. They are extremely bright eyed, friendly and creative. Encourage them to make their own Christmas cards and gifts.

briefly happening... By Sheri Burnside
December 1 through 30
Upper’s Winter Lights Extravaganza
Free Premarital/Marriage Counseling at Findlay Evangelical Free Church It’s clear from the Findlay Evangelical Free Church website that this is a happening place. As their website expresses with “Rooted Deep… Reaching Wide,” this commitment rings true in their regular ministry and community outreach offerings. For couples preparing for marriage, spiritual counseling is available which focuses on God’s intended blueprint for marriage. What is real love? This, and other pointed questions will be addressed while couples are getting to know each other better on a spiritual level, with an emphasis on communication as a key understanding to a happy marriage. The most prevalent stressors on a marriage are also covered, anything from finances, budgets and wills to conflict resolution. Realizing couples are different, counseling also helps identify special needs which may be unique to the pair. The overriding belief is for an individual to love God first, which equips a person to better love their mate. Premarital counseling is provided once/week for 8-10 weeks, and requires qualification pending an application process. Effective marriage counseling for couples in conflict is also available. For information concerning counseling at Findlay E-Free Church, contact Dave Cass at 419-423-5636. www.findlayefree.com.
Noyce Grant marks UF’s largest award
Since 1997, people have been flocking to Upper Sandusky for Upper’s Winter Fantasy of Lights, where 33 acres of mesmerizing holiday lights greet visitors. Last year, 65 displays over 30 days were seen by approximately 11,000 vehicles that drove through Harrison Smith Park. Families can also take a carriage ride or sleigh ride through the display. Three semi-loads of homemade and hand-painted materials are set up by volunteers and each light display has its own theme, including Santa’s Stable, Christmas at the Mill and a Snowman Village. This year’s featured display will be Peanut’s Christmas. This fundraising event divides profits among local organizations and this year, proceeds will benefit the Upper Sandusky High School Music Department and Wyandot County Council for Birth Defects. Runs from December 1 through 30, with a suggested donation of $5 per car, $15 per commercial van, and $50 for tour busses. Harrison Smith Park, 525 E. Wyandot Ave., Upper Sandusky. 419-294-3556. www.UppersFantasyofLights.org.

Talk about supersizing America, The University of Findlay received its own super-sized award- a $1.2 million, five-year Noyce Grant to help university students as well as the surrounding area who have an interest in turning their math and science knowledge into teaching degrees supporting high-need schools. This grant comes at a time when there is a state and national shortage of math and science educators. The Noyce Scholarship Program hopes to target those with two years of science or math under their belt. With standard tuition at The University of Findlay averaging $29,716, this scholarship will pay $30,000 in total aid. Eligible students, including transfers, will receive scholarships for their junior and senior years, completing a B.S. degree before proceeding to post-baccalaureate study. They will be eligible for teaching licensure and receive full tuition for the completion of their Masters in Education. Through mentorship programs, students will be prepared to teach in high-need schools. For more information, visit www.findlay.edu.
New Logo Helps Brand the City of Findlay The City of Findlay released a new logo in October, stemming from a Fall 2013 contest. A panel of professionals with expertise in graphic design convened to choose the winning entry submitted from Findlay local Jay Yeater. Yeater described the logo as “patriotic, vibrant, growing,” adjectives that also describe the progressive community in which we live. In a quick read of Jay’s blog, his first step was to consider Findlay landmarks, including the Oil Derricks, the Old Millstream, and classic south-end architecture. Those considerations quickly gave way to the flag. Hours of doodling later, he materialized a version that could be scrutinized by his network of designers. As part of the final challenge, Jay crafted a design rationale, “Writing a logo rationale feels like asking Shakespeare to describe a grilled cheese sandwich.” Jay’s legacy will live on in true Shakespearean style, through city communications while adorning the south water tower.

Hilton Carries On
It’s a leap of faith when seven weddings are already booked for a new hotel. But Michelle Slattery, sales director for the Hilton Garden Inn Findlay, says it’s just one indication that Findlay is ready for a larger hotel and entertainment venue that carries the Hilton name. The hotel opened in November and already has several bookings into next year. “We’ve been getting a lot of calls since the summer,” she says. “We’ve got several meetings and large community events planned. It’s really exciting for us to be joining the community.” The hotel includes 101 sleeping rooms, 19 of which are suites. The Garden Grille, the onsite restaurant and bar, is open to the public and serves breakfast and dinner as well as room service. Banquet and catering facilities can accommodate small groups and large groups of up to about 300. Other guest amenities include a fitness center, 24-hour business center, guest laundry and a heated indoor pool with a hot tub. -RB 1050 Interstate Drive West across from the Carmike 12 movie theaters. 567-250-2525. www.findlay.hgi.com.
Flag City Sport & Spine Chris Lofquist DC, MSc, ATC, ART
Area Athlete Spotlight
What made you choose to seek care with Dr. Lofquist? I had been dealing with a torn quad muscle for most of my junior year. The injury had caused me to sit out the majority of my soccer season and I had rested it all winter but the injury and pain wasn’t improving. We had tried different things from ultrasound to electrical stimulations nothing had worked. Then I heard of Dr. Lofquist active release therapy and thought I’d try it out.
Culinary Experts in Training
The next time you want a mid-day nosh, go back to school. That’s because one of the newer places to eat in Findlay is a café located in the Millstream Career Center, the Millstream Café. It’s a place where culinary and hospitality students hone their skills while providing lunch and catering to the public. The café opened two years ago, but recently had a facelift that includes an outdoor patio and improved look. From the kitchen to the café to the iPads servers use to take orders, it’s a unique place to have lunch and help students learn at the same time. The dozens of students who make up the heart of the café come from Findlay and 15 other area schools. “They do everything from the dishes to menu boards to the cooking,” says Gordon Myers, culinary arts instructor. “I direct them, and then I stand out of their way.” The 70 seat café is open from 10:45am to 12:15pm Monday through Friday every day Findlay City Schools are in session. Monday and Tuesday the café offers salad, bread and soup bar only, but Wednesday through Friday a full menu is offered that changes monthly. It also offers catering and has a conference room that can seat up to 20. Myers hopes to eventually extend the café’s hours of operation and do more outside catering. -RB 1150 Broad Ave., adjacent to Findlay High School. To see the menu, go to www.millstreamcc.org/cafemenu.html.
What is your current sport, what have you competed in previously? Varsity Soccer- Forward/ Midfielder Varsity Track and Field- 400m, 4x4, 200m
How do you think Dr. Lofquist has helped you during competitions? Dr. Lofquist had a huge impact on my athletic career. Soon after seeing him my injury began to improve quickly. Within a few weeks I was back on the field playing the game I love. Without him I’m not sure if I would have been able to play or if I would have recovered as successfully as I did. What has been your favorite field to play on? Elmor Gram Stadium
Name: Amanda Kovaleski Age: 17
Do you plan to play in college? (If yes- varsity or club, etc; if no- What will you miss the most about it?) I will not be playing soccer in college and will miss the competitiveness and excitement of a close game. Any additional comments you’d like to share about the care you’ve received at Flag City Sport & Spine? I was truly astounded at how quickly I was able to recover from an injury that I had been suffering from for months. The care I received at Flag City Sport and Spine was incredible and I would, and do, highly recommend them to any athlete facing any kind of injury.

Building Smilies Michael Friese embodies “Student of the Month”
by Kay Mathias
Every Tuesday morning, 14-year-old Michael Friese of Findlay heads out the door to work on building smiles. Friese is a volunteer at Birchaven Village Nursing Home and works weekly with assigned residents in the Alzheimer’s wing. “It makes me feel special because I am one of the only ‘kids’ that is doing this,” Friese said. Friese began his volunteer work in November 2012 when he was in the middle of working on his “Disability Awareness” Merit Badge for Boy Scouts. He chose this elective badge because he could identify with the work involved to earn it. “I myself have asthma and a couple of others in my troop had disabilities,” said Friese. “I thought it would be good for me.” Michael spends his volunteer time with residents participating in interactive activities such as tossing balloons or daily group exercises. “I get to see a lot of smiles,” Friese said with plans for a future career as a construction worker, he is learning valuable basic skills from his volunteer experience and would encourage others to do the same. “It is helping me develop leadership and responsibility skills,” he said. “It is also helping teach me to be kind and to relate to people.”

I
A family Christmas stocking tradition becomes a sign of love
t took eight months after our wedding for me to truly feel like a part of my husband’s family. It wasn’t that they did not embrace me – far from it. But there was one part of the family puzzle that was missing until the Christmas after our spring wedding. It came in the mail, in a small package that was light and flexible. It was a Christmas stocking. It was not just any store-bought stocking, however. This one was hand-knit by my sister-in-law, from a pattern that had been in the family for decades. It was Santa Claus, with a button nose, holding a decorated Christmas tree. Across the top was my name. As I pulled it from the package, my husband said, “You finally have your stocking!” Every member of the Barto family – whether by birth or marriage – eventually gets such a stocking. The originals were made back in the 1950s by my husband’s aunt for the children in the family. Eventually my husband’s sister and cousin took on the tradition and take turns making stockings for new family members. Each newly-minted spouse receives his or her stocking the Christmas after the wedding. Each new baby receives his or her stocking for their first Christmas. My first daughter, with whom we celebrated Thanksgiving in China, spent her first Christmas weeks later with her

stocking hanging from the mantle. And it didn’t feel like our holiday was complete until my second daughter got hers a few months after coming home.
Every family has its own holiday traditions. My own family, Italian to the core, celebrated Christmas Eve with the Feast of the Seven Fishes. No matter how good we were, we would find a tiny lump of coal in our stockings to remind us that we had our moments during the year. My mother-in-law would make a Christmas

breakfast casserole that would bake all morning while presents were opened. And my husband’s overreaction to getting underwear for Christmas one year still makes his siblings laugh. We’ve tried to keep some of those traditions, and add new ones. We don’t have family here, but we never travel at Christmas. We want our children to wake up in their own beds. There is no alarm clock on Christmas morning – whoever is up first can wake everyone else up no matter what time it is. And, since we go to church on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day is spent in pajamas. And you just never know if one of those pretty wrapped packages has underwear in it. This year, another branch of the Barto family gets to enjoy the Christmas stocking tradition. My brother-in-law and his wife recently had a beautiful baby girl. This month, Bella will get her stocking in the mail courtesy of her Aunt Kris. And, when we decorate our own house for Christmas, we will hang our stockings by the chimney with care. Each one is a little different, depending on who made it, but all four reflect a common love of family. And that, after all, is one of the best Christmas traditions we can continue.
MOMSence
The Mayor Mom Mayor Lydia Mihalik by Laurie Wurth-Pressel
Findlay Area Family sat down with Mayor Lydia Mihalik to talk politics, motherhood and the life lessons she’d like to pass on to her children. What motivated you to get into local politics and run for mayor? Prior to running for Mayor, I worked for both the City of Findlay and Hancock County for 10 plus years. I was looking for a way to have a greater impact on the future of our community. I valued public service and I felt confident about my ability to make a difference, so I took a chance and was honored to be elected Mayor. What is a typical day like for you? Drew, my husband, and I get the kids out the door and head to work. My mornings are filled with meetings, appearances, celebrations with school kids or businesses. Lunch only happens if I am lucky, and then it’s home to grab the kids off the bus, homework and a quick meal, and then I’m out the door again for more meetings and appearances. What is most gratifying about being Findlay’s mayor? I take great pride in representing an incredible community and it makes the long days and difficult decisions all worth it. What is hardest about juggling motherhood and public service? Achieving balance. There are so many demands with my job and with being a parent, but somehow my husband Drew and I make it work. How do you cope with all the demands? What do you do for a break from it all? Exercise, family and friends. I also live for a warm bubble bath, even if the quiet moment only lasts three minutes before my kids, a dog, or my husband interrupts. You just had a new little one, are you getting any sleep? I am getting just as much sleep as any mother would expect with a little one at home. I manage by enjoying the moments I get to spend with our newest addition, knowing that sleep deprivation isn’t permanent. What do you believe are the biggest joys of motherhood? Watching my children grow while celebrating their successes. Knowing that I’m doing what I can to raise productive, thoughtful and compassionate children will bring me a lifetime of happiness.
Mayor Lydia Mihalik
Three kids, Joseph James, 8, Elizabeth Mae, 7, and Delaney Jo Ann, 9 weeks. She runs the City of Findlay and a household of lively children.
If you could impart just three lessons upon your children, what would they be? Trust in the Lord with all your heart, think of others before yourself, and laugh often.

Tavern at the Inn
THE SHORT COURSE
(Inside Findlay Inn & Conference Center) Keeping it cozy for everyone in the family By Sarah Mayle
Tavern at the Inn
Bathroom amenities Outstanding. Clean, spacious, changing table, nice sitting area.
200 E. Main Cross St., Findlay 419-422-5682 Monday – Thursday 11am to 11pm, (kitchen closes at 10pm) Friday: 11am to 12am, (kitchen closes at 10pm) Saturday: 4pm to 12am, (kitchen closes at 10pm) Sunday: Closed www.findlayinn.com, also on Facebook under Tavern at the Inn. Carryout and catering available. My 6 year old raved about her dinner throughout our recent meal at Tavern at the Inn and then declared, “If I could pick a place for my whole class to come and eat lunch, it would be here.” Funny that I was sitting there thinking just about the same thing. It’s all rave reviews from my family for the Tavern at the Inn, the restaurant inside The Findlay Inn & Conference Center. My 9-year-old son, a chicken nugget and chicken tender connoisseur, ranked the Tavern’s at the top of his list. Me? I have to admit I loved everything about the Tavern at the Inn. I loved that I couldn’t choose what to order because so many things looked good. I loved that the wait staff was so friendly. I loved the cozy, elegant atmosphere, the glass-enshrined candle on our table, and the jazzy music playing. And, once I finally made my dinner selection of the special Thai Coconut Peanut Sauce Tilapia, I loved that too.

Kid’s menu? Yes, nice variety Food allergy concerns? Let your server know and the proper precautions can be made. Always happy to accommodate. The Tavern at the Inn boasts a wide assortment of appetizers, dinner pastas and sandwiches, entrees, sides, desserts and drinks. Their fully-stocked bar serves bottled, but not draft beer, and patrons can look for an ever-evolving wine list. New lunch and dinner specials are offered each week starting on Tuesdays, and there is a prime rib special for $16.95 every Friday and Saturday. We did not try an appetizer during our visit, but of the 15 available, a few that caught my eye were Beer Cheese and Pretzel Bites, Tuscan Stuffed Sausage Portabella and Won Ton Shrimp. Pastas, such as Shrimp Milanese and Chicken and Broccoli Farfalle adorn the menu, and pork chops, various steaks, salmon, perch, tuna and chicken dishes are also available. In my opinion, the “Dinner Sandwich Board,” as it’s called on the menu, is a steal. My husband ordered the Prime Rib Hoagie Dip, described as “thin-sliced Prime Rib with caramelized onion, au jus and melted provolone cheese. He chose fries as his side,
and when it all arrived, it was more like a sub, came with a pickle, and the helping of fries was generous. Prices on the sandwich board range from $6.99 to $8.99. My husband also remarked that the onions added not only a nice taste, but a nice texture to the sandwich.
Kids menu is a hit
The kids menu includes a grilled cheese sandwich, chicken tenders, spaghetti with marinara sauce, or a turkey wrap. All are served with a beverage and your choice of baby carrots, applesauce, fries or freshlymade potato chips. My daughter loved the spaghetti, especially since she got to have two little cups of grated Parmesan cheese to top it. The dish came with bread and she ordered fries as well. In addition to wishing her class was there enjoying the Tavern, she declared the fries were “awesome,” as she dipped them in the, “world’s best ketchup.” She also insisted that I try the delicious spaghetti. (It was very good,

and she said maybe I could order that for myself next time.) As I mentioned before, my son enjoyed his chicken tenders and his entire meal. We ordered him a salad, and he ate every last bite (except the tomatoes). He devoured all of his fries and chicken tenders and ate half of his sister’s fries. My meal was wonderful. I had never tasted anything quite like the tilapia dish. The sauce was creamy and buttery yet sweet with a hint of peanut flavor. With a squeeze of lemon, it was a delight. My salad was very fresh, and I chose a side of mashed potatoes with brown gravy. The presentation of the food was yet another reason my meal left me content and pleased. The word is the Tavern is always decorated beautifully for Christmas, and our waitress, Kristen, said this year will be no exception. I look forward to experiencing that extra touch and cozying up in the Tavern’s relaxing atmosphere again soon. I couldn’t have enjoyed our meal more.
