St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish announced that four nuns from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, based in Ann Arbor, will be moving to Findlay next August to work in St. Michael’s School. The parish will be demolishing three rental houses and building a convent for the nuns in the coming months. “It’s an opportunity that comes along only once every few generations,” said Father Mike Zacharias. “It has probably been 50 years or more since a new community of religious sisters has set down roots at one of our parishes in the diocese.” —LP

PERSON OF IMPACT
Laurie Turnow
Executive Director of Women’s Resource Center Making a difference in the lives of women and babies
By Lisa Crawford
When Laurie Turnow received a call suggesting that she apply for the executive director position at the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) of Findlay, her life to that point had been preparation for the position. Indeed, her past, a social work degree from Taylor University in Indiana, working for a national Christian women’s club and nurturing five daughters (ages 9 to 19 at the time), had prepared her for the role. Today, she’s celebrating 20 years at the helm of the non-profit that supports women and babies. Preparation meets opportunity A senior in high school in 1973 when Roe v. Wade was enacted, Laurie recently planned the WRC’s annual banquet to celebrate the organization’s 25th year as a local life-affirming ministry. The Center fills a need locally that would otherwise go unmet. In the past year, the WRC distributed 26,000 diapers, baby formula and 150 baby blankets--all free-of-charge. WRC is also the only area source of free pregnancy testing, parenting videos and classes, and optional bible studies. The resources provided by the C.A.R.E. program (Character And Relationships Education), reach 3,500 students in grades 6-10 each year in all Findlay City and Hancock County Schools. Favorite aspects of the job In addition to her passion for leadership and protecting babies, Laurie enjoys working with people. “I’m not someone who would enjoy working by myself. I like working with companions and colleagues who can bounce ideas off of each other, all the while maintaining an environment of mutual respect,” she said. Laurie describes her staff of seven, and the WRC’s 12 volunteers and eight board members, as “phenomenal.” Serving more than 1,200 clients every year provides a sense of purpose and joy. “We love journeying alongside women, helping them with practical supplies for the baby and emotional support from caring mentors,” she said. “We give them hope for tomorrow, showing them that God sees them, knows them, and cares about them.”
What’s your favorite Christmas song? The Hallelujah Chorus. I always look forward to the Findlay Civic Choir’s performance of Handel’s Messiah! What is the yummiest thing in your office right now? A burning Woodwick Vanilla Bean Caramel Biscotti candle and a large stockpile (thanks to a recent birthday) of “Good and Plenty” candies. Where in Findlay do you enjoy doing your holiday shopping? Pier 1. I admit to a personal weakness for buying their pillows.
Awed by transformations Laurie says it’s awe-inspiring to build client relationships and make a safe place for women to land. “When a young woman will change her heart and mind from thinking her only choice is to terminate a pregnancy, to feeling encouraged that she can parent and that there will be resources and people to help her, then she can do a courageous thing and carry a child that wasn’t expected.” Fa-la-la-la-la Laurie and her husband Mike, whom she met in college, have been married for 43 years. He is the CIO of Appraisal
Research Corporation in Findlay, and is a computer consultant at the WRC. As the director’s husband, he’s a “cheerleader to a cheerleader,” supporting and understanding the extra hours Laurie often commits to her mission. This holiday season, Laurie and Mike are looking forward to spending time with their five daughters and sons-in-law and 13

grandchildren, who are all coming home to Findlay. It will be another miraculous moment in the life of an area woman who is great at spotting them! Holiday Engagements Lead to Wedding Plans
Scarlet Oaks Estate, an idyllic venue By Laurie Wurth Pressel
The barn, a stunning spot for a weddings is rustic and charming, with a beautiful crystal chandelier, wooden floors and large barn doors that slide open to let in the breeze and sunshine. Handicap accessible with an adjacent indoor restroom facility, the barn can accommodate 155 guests for dinner. Tents are provided and can be set up in the pasture to accommodate larger weddings. Many couples get engaged on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or Valentine’s Day— all right around the corner. And shortly after showing off the engagement ring to family and friends, the happy couple starts planning the ‘big day.’ Kate Manders, owner of Scarlet Oaks Estate off U.S. Route 68 in Findlay, knows about the stresses and joys of creating a perfect wedding day. She’s hosted over 100 weddings at Scarlet Oaks since it opened in 2015. “Every wedding here has been unique and special,” she says. “I love getting to know my brides!” Set the date, find a location The first step in wedding planning in setting a date and finding a location. A destination wedding venue, Scarlet Oaks isn’t just popular with locals. “We’ve hosted weddings for couples across the
country and even had a couple from London, England get married here,” Kate explains. For some, Findlay, Ohio, happens to be a central location for families living on opposite ends of the country. Other out-of-towners have just fallen in love with the country setting and offerings at Scarlet Oaks. Wedding in the country Every wedding package at Scarlet Oaks includes access to the entire property, 13 country acres with mature trees, a fenced pasture and meandering stream; a 1900s-era wood barn; 1865 historic 4,880 square feet Manor House; and a comfortable cottage. “We provide the tables and chairs and set up,” explains Kate. “Couples make their own arrangements for caterers and decorators.”
The Big Day The Manor House is reserved for the bride and her bridesmaids, where guests can stay overnight one or two nights before the wedding. Featuring a kitchen and living areas, three bedrooms and 2 ½ baths, plus a specially-designed pink room for the bride to get ready. Kate says, “Brides enjoy being photographed in this room because it’s so picturesque.”
The Cottage— with a game room, three bedrooms and 1½ baths— is perfect for the groom and groomsmen before the wedding. Wedding festivities (and guests) usually spill out onto the shaded grounds with mature trees surrounded by pastures and farm fields. Many couples choose to get married outdoors beneath a wooden arbor that can be draped with fresh flowers. For Kate, nothing beats the magic of giving a couple a memorable wedding day. “I’ve had brides literally cry when they see this place because it fits their ideal of a dream wedding venue,” she says. “I love building relationships with couples and providing that personal touch to make their day special.” To learn more about Scarlet Oaks Estate and to preview upcoming public events, visit scarletoaksestate.com or email Kate Manders at scarletoaksestate@gmail.com.

Give yourself a fantastic gift this holiday season— commit to reading in 2020. Reading is an enriching and relaxing activity that costs nothing but time well spent. The Findlay Hancock County Public Library provides access to free books. We asked the librarians and staff at the library to sugggest books for 2020 reading lists.
Sarah Cramer
Children’s Services Librarian “My favorite type of book is middle-grade fiction (fiction written for kids between 8-12 years old) because I work with a lot of kids that age, and I love being able to talk with them about the books they’re reading and recommend other books they might like.” SARAH RECOMMENDS: The Okay Witch by Emma Steinkellner This graphic novel reminded me of Smile meets Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and it’s a quick read for graphic novel fans who enjoy fantasy—or funny, talking cats.
Joel Mantey Circulation Services Manager
“I particularly like fantasy and nonfiction works. I like learning about our world and how it works, but I also like to be taken away to fantastical settings.” JOEL RECOMMENDS: The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons With strong worldbuilding and storytelling, this debut work delivers an epic tale.
The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart Already recognized with awards buzz, this beautiful, heartbreaking novel is about a girl and her father traveling around the country in an old school bus.
No Country for Old Gnomes by Delilah S. Dawon and Kevin Hearne A tongue in cheek humorous fantasy reminiscent of Terry Pratchett, will be worth a reread to catch all of the hidden jokes.
Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly What I loved most about reading this story of a deaf girl who creates a song for a lonely whale was how much you learn about deaf culture, the science of sound and, of course, whales.
The Lost Gutenberg: The Astounding Story of One Book’s Five-Hundred-Year Odyssey by Margaret Leslie Davis An interesting ‘life’ story of a Gutenberg Bible and the hidden world of book collecting.

Sarah Clevidence Assistant Director
“I’m an eclectic reader and enjoy books from multiple genres. I just enjoy the experience of reading a good book!” SARAH RECOMMENDS: Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land This memoir is an exploration of the reality of living in poverty in America. The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J.Ryan Stradal I loved the characters in this novel of a Midwestern family drama set in the world of IPA brewing. The Stationary Shop by Marjan Kamali This novel spans decades, alternating between the budding romance of two teenagers in 1953 Tehran to their reunion 60 years later.
Brittany Lutes
Children’s Services Manager “My favorite genre is fantasy because life needs a little more magic.” BRITTANY RECOMMENDS: Goodbye, Friend! Hello, Friend! by Cori Doerfeld Cori Doerfeld has a really gentle and appealing way of inviting children to explore emotions, like the excitement of making new friends but also the sadness that comes when they are no longer close enough to see every day. Lubna and Pebble by Wendy Meddour Lubna is a very touching story about friendship and hope in the midst of difficult times. The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern A magical read, perfect for anyone who has ever wished they could step inside the pages of their favorite book and join the story.
Holly Walter Adult Services Librarian
Justin Crawfis
Genealogy Associate “I enjoy nonfiction, especially biographies. I find nonfiction to be much more compelling and interesting than fiction. It also tends to be more educational, too.” JUSTIN RECOMMENDS: Am I Dying? A Complete Guide to Your Symptoms by Christopher Kelly, MD & Marc Eisenberg, MD A relevant, practical, informative guide to many common health ailments and when to seek treatment, if necessary. Unicorn Day by Diana Murray This charming story, accompanied by colorful illustrations and written in rhyme, will certainly enchant readers of all ages.
“It is so hard to choose one genre, but I’ve been enjoying romance lately. I like the optimism and humor in these stories, as well as the diverse female protagonists who are often enthusiastic about their careers.” HOLLY RECOMMENDS: The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren This is a hilarious romantic comedy about two enemies who decide to take a honeymoon trip together because the newlyweds get food poisoning. Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell I love the illustrations of the pumpkin patch and the story is fun and lighthearted. They Called Us Enemy by George Takei I was stunned by the beauty of the illustrations and Takei’s firsthand perspective of World War II.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
Library program promotes family reading By Lisa Crawford
Like a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle becomes clearer one piece at a time, every book read to a toddler/preschooler creates a picture of a kindergartner who loves reading. The Findlay Hancock County Public Library offers a “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program to promote family reading. The program currently has 211 children enrolled, according to Brittany Lutes, children’s services manager at the library. Long before they can spell “literacy” Along with parents and caregivers as the first education providers, the program’s first objective is to promote reading to newborns, infants and toddlers. The second objective is to encourage parent and child bonding through the act of reading. Brittany adds, “One of my favorite things about the 1000 books program is the opportunity to instill a lifelong love of reading in young children. Kids who participate in the program get really excited when they report their books read. We make a big deal of it because reading 100 books is amazing! And every 100 after that is amazing as well. We express to those kids how special that accomplishment is and they feel good about it.” Paper or paperless Anyone interested in joining the program can visit the library to sign up with a simple form. Two options exist for tracking books read: writing titles down on printed record sheets, available at the library, or by downloading the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten App” and scanning books into the app library. The app is available for both android and iphone devices at 1000booksbeforekindergarten.org. A public testament to the joy of reading Families may report to the library for every 100 book milestone. “They can pick out a prize and get their picture taken to show off their accomplishments,” explains Brittany. A wall of smiling faces is displayed at the library as a means of tracking progress, including a couple of faces of children who have personally decided to make 2,000 their new goal. Stix: A Gem in Downtown Findlay
Asian-fusion with an American twist By Betsey Watson Mascaro
After a brutal week with a non-stop schedule, dismal weather, and too much Halloween sugar, we were in desperate need of some quality bonding time. And for our family, bonding often means food. We visited Stix for Saturday brunch, when the atmosphere is more casual. Located downtown, Stix occupies the space left vacant when Revolver closed its doors in 2012. Owner and executive chef, Renz Salanga, and his wife, La, breathed new life into the space, while drawing on their Filipino heritage, to offer a modern take on Asian fusion. Floorto-ceiling glass windows line the front of the restaurant, flooding the small space with natural light, making it feel airy and spacious. A bar divides the dining area from the kitchen, while also offering a glimpse of the magic. Modern and chic, the restaurant has white tables with mix-andmatch blue and green chairs. Throughout the space, wood accents add richness and a natural feel without marring the crisp, clean aesthetic. During warmer months, the dining area extends outside where an outdoor bar, lounge area and tables offer diners a relaxed space to enjoy the weather along with Stix’ legendary flavors. Innovative food in Findlay Settling at our table while perusing the menu, the restaurant’s approach to flavors offers an array of options from Szechuan ribs, steaks, and a kobe beef
burger for meat eaters, to oysters, Chilean sea bass, and poké for seafood lovers. Many appetizers are vegetarian while the hot stone bibimbap offers thirteen protein options, ranging from tofu to pork belly! For the daring, or indecisive, several eclectic appetizers can create a dynamic meal sampling Stix’ finest offerings. And speaking of appetizers, order the brussel sprouts. Just do it. Somehow, Salanga and his crew transform this childhood nemesis into sweet, savory and crispy beauties that must be tried to be believed. (A friend of mine has even dreamed about them!) Since we were visiting at brunch, the selections of what to order were made more difficult as, along with the signature dishes, brunch has a few unique options including Fried Chicken and Waffles, Filipino Sausages, and Bananas Foster Brioche French Toast. Thankfully, Leland and Joey (ages 10 and 8 respectively) both opted for the French toast while Mae (age 5) chose the chicken and waffles. That left Jeremy and me free to sample other delicacies such as the Thai chopped salad (with or without grilled chicken or grilled mahi), chorizo con huevos, or steamed bao buns. I decided on my longtime favorite of Sake Fried Chicken while Jeremy chose the Filipino Sausages. As we waited for our meals, Jeremy and I sipped on a Bloody Mary and mimosa (visit during brunch for bottomless options!).

The Short Course Bold flavors and artful presentation The dishes arrived soon with a flurry of excitement. Joey and Leland’s eyes grew big at the site of the billows of whipped cream sitting atop their French toast. Syrup pooled around the bowl along with a dusting of powdered sugar while strawberries and blueberries added color. Joey noted that some bites were too sweet, and since she tends to prefer savory and sour flavors over unabashed sweetness, her report is credible. Leland, meanwhile, made quick work of the dish (a clear sign of approval) which isn’t surprising since his tolerance for sweet is off the charts. Mae quickly gobbled the fresh berries on her plate and eagerly chomped her side of bacon, but felt more wary about the unusual syrup that came with it. Our expert server returned quickly with traditional maple syrup, and Mae hungrily dug into her meal. Jeremy’s rectangular plate featured three longanisa (pork sausages) combined with a side of garlic fried rice topped with a fried egg. Mixed berries offered color and a touch of sweet. My fried chicken sat on a bed of white rice surrounded by vibrant green beans and set my mouth watering. As always, the spicy tapatio-garlic aioli set my mouth aflame. I enjoyed the mixture of textures— soft rice, juicy and crispy chicken, and the crunch of the miso glazed green beans. Perfection. When I turned to Jeremy for a bite of his meal, he just looked

He reported that the mild sausage offered unique flavor that paired beautifully with the garlicky rice and egg, giving the meal a balanced combination of savory and sweet. Grateful for the opportunity As the brunch hours wound down, the restaurant was filled with diners of all ages. I felt grateful for the chance to introduce our children to a more formal dining environment in a way that still accommodated their ages. Parents often get bogged down with the drudgery of “kid-friendly food,” but Stix offers the opportunity for young and old to enjoy the robust flavors in a stylish atmosphere usually reserved for a bigger city. Chef Salanga, who is also the genius behind Findlay Brewing Company’s fun pub menu, weaves each dish with eclectic flavor combinations to create meals that tempt more adventurous diners while still satisfying those with more traditional palettes. Stix is a place that jolts you out of your dull routine and adds color— or in this case flavor— to your life.
