KIDS HOROSCOPE July 23August 22 By Sue Lovett

The sign of Leo is ruled by the sun. Lucky are the parents who have a Leo child. As soon as they come into the world they are smiling and happy to be in the spotlight. They enjoy attention ALL of the time. Rarely does a Leo child want to be alone. They like to be dramatic so reading stories to them that require responses and interaction is perfect. When they are in pre-school they are eager to participate in all of the singing and games and may resist quiet time. At home they rarely want to take a nap. They always want to be the king or queen, front and center, and are not happy in the back row. If there are other children in the family, the Leo will want to “take charge” of entertaining them and playing school with them. They are good students and require a lot of praise in the class room. They have musical talent and enjoy performing. Fame and fortune are in their stars.

Artwork at Findlay’s Mazza Museum will soon reach into a new dimension. Construction was recently completed on a new gallery for displaying pop-ups, fold-outs, die-cuts, tunnel books, and other artwork that is three-dimensional. Funding for the new gallery was generously provided by museum docent Ginny Laiho and her husband, Rikhard. A sneak peek of some of the pieces that will be on display included mock-ups and “practice” pieces in varying stages of construction to demonstrate the difficult engineering process required of this specialized art form. According to Mazza director Benjamin Sapp, the selected items of 3D artwork exhibited in the new gallery will be rotated, with some pieces carefully transferred back into storage and replaced with other pieces, to reduce the potential for damage and general dust-gathering on the delicate works. The grand opening celebration of the new, 325-square-foot gallery space, scheduled for November 12, will feature Matthew Reinhart, a New York Times bestselling author, illustrator, and paper engineer who donated original art pieces from each of his titles as well as many books from his own private collection. Reinhart will speak during the Mazza’s weekend conference following the grand opening. -KT

It’s a Royal Occasion

When Patti Murray attended a Frozen party with her twin granddaughters in New York, the lifelong entrepreneur got an idea for a new business, Fairytales Royal Parties. “Parents are so busy these days, yet they want to give their child that magical experience,” she says. “We offer all-inclusive parties so that parents can sit back, relax and enjoy their child’s special day without the stress of all the planning, coordinating and decorating.” Based in Fremont, Ohio, Fairytales Royal Parties serves clients within a 50 to 60 mile radius—covering Toledo, Perrysburg, Findlay, and Sandusky. The company specializes in themed parties including Royal Tea Parties (featuring a favorite princess); Pirate Adventures; Glamour Girlz Spa Retreat; PINK Pajama Club; Racing Fans; Farmville and more. Parties include custom designed invitations and thank you cards; delivery and setup of tables, chairs, linens, themed dishes and glassware; games and activities; and props and decorations to transform any area into a magical environment based on the party’s theme. Typical activities include face painting, balloon twisting and caricature drawing. “We offer all the favorite princess and superhero characters,” says Murray. “And all of our performers are accomplished actors/actresses and vocalists, many with musical theatre degrees.” -LP Fairytales Royal Parties is also available for fundraisers, corporate events, school activities and business promotions. For more information, visit fairytalesroyalparties.com or call Patti Murray at 419-307-2775.

Potluck & Play and Sensory Friendly Movie Night Bring a dish and build social skills by Sarah Mayle

Jump into summer fun and fellowship at Potluck & Play and Sensory Friendly Movie Night events for children with developmental differences and their family and friends at Blanchard Valley School. Participants should bring a dish and their favorite beverage to share in the cafeteria, and after eating, the kids can play outside on the playground. Sensory Friendly Movie Night will begin in the cafeteria after each of the play dates. “These events are really good because a lot of the kids with special needs don’t get to go to special events, Treece said. “They might have behavior problems that other parents don’t understand. Here they can be around other kids like them and build social skills, and parents can meet other parents who know what they’re going through. “It’s so nice to meet other parents who get it, she added. “It’s good all around socially for everybody. Treece said that last year, most of the attending kids were between the ages of 2 and 13, but the events are open up to age 22. Following Potluck & Play, all are welcome to stay for Sensory Friendly Movie Night, another free event that will begin in the cafeteria around 6:15pm. Treece said that during the movie, kids are not expected to sit still. It is a judgment free zone, where they are welcome to talk, sing, or run around and play. Blankets and pillows are encouraged, and popcorn and water will be provided. Additional snacks will also be available for purchase. The play dates, put together by Friends of BVS, will take place from 4:30-6pm on July 17 and August 7. Those interested in Potluck & Play can check Facebook for more detail at facebook.com/ events/1591818744435693/. There, you can let people know if you’re coming, see what dishes people are bringing, or stay in the loop on details. Contact Treece with any questions at bvspto@gmail.com.

Lessons Learned Parenting is a journey, not a destination by Rose Roccisano Barto

Connelly West , 4, Findlay

When my oldest was just starting school, I talked with her teacher about an upcoming field trip. I had concerns about the trip, and the teacher said something I will never forget. She said there comes a time when a parent has to let go, and cut the apron strings. My daughter was barely five years old. That wasn’t about to happen any time soon. At that age, it was my job to hold on tight. That same daughter is now 15, with one year of high school under her belt. Over the years I’ve realized parenting is a delicate balance between protection and freedom. And just when you think you have it right, the rules change and you have to find middle ground again. Every year brings challenges. In elementary school it was riding the bus and playground politics. In middle school it was mean girls and homework. Now in high school, the stakes are much higher and are focused on her future. The basis of relationships, college and the rest of her life are being formed right now. I still need to pay attention, perhaps more than ever. But I also need to back off just enough. As we’ve gone through each phase, I think I learn more than she does and I try to remember for her younger sister. I often joke that she is the one I make all my mistakes on. For each thing I might do right, I certainly do a lot of things wrong when it comes to parenting. There are times I wish I had taken a big breath and a big step back. There are times I wish I’d have thought before speaking. I would rather have those mistakes, made out of my love and caring, than larger ones, made out of her inexperience, that are harder to fix. Am I tough? Probably. Do I have high expectations? Certainly. I expect to know where she is at all times and with whom. I expect to be spoken to respectfully. I expect her to do her best in school and, if she can’t get help at home, find it in the classroom by speaking up. I expect that, someday, she will take some of my advice and completely ignore it. I expect that she will have to make her own mistakes. And I expect that I will hate every minute of it. Do I worry about her, even though she’s never given me anything to worry about? Constantly. I don’t worry about her as much as I worry about the world around her. Weird stuff happens, and sometimes good kids are caught in the middle. I just hope I’ve given her the tools to make good decisions and, when in doubt, the freedom to come to me for help. Freedom, in fact, is exactly what I hope I am giving her by staying close. It’s the freedom to venture a little from home, but always be able to come back. It’s the freedom to make mistakes, but be able to learn from them. So yes, 10 years later, those apron strings are still fully attached. These days they stretch more than ever and I expect they will continue to do that. They will never break, however, and I don’t think either of us wants them to.

Adopting a Life of Love Dan and Claire Gremling by Sarah Mayle

Already parents of four boys, Claire and Dan Gremling felt their family wasn’t quite complete. They felt called to adopt a girl with special needs from Ukraine, and by the time they came home, they had two. “I had seen their pictures and heard their stories and in our hearts they were already ours,” Claire Gremling said. “We bonded as if they were in my womb. Seeing them for the first time was like seeing a child for the first time when they’re born. The paperwork was the labor.” The Gremlings adopted Eliza and Mollie, who are now 3-years-old, when they were about 20 months old and one-year-old, respectively. They learned about the girls through Reece’s Rainbow, an adoption ministry aimed at finding homes for children with Down’s syndrome and other special needs throughout the world. Through the adoption process, the Gremlings were approved for two children, and even though they initially committed to one child, both Dan and Claire felt they would probably end up bringing home two. Along with having Down’s, Eliza suffered from a heart condition. Some prospective parents had turned their backs, but the Gremlings would not. “It was so nice to be there,” Dan said of meeting the girls. “…To see them after so long and to hold them and see their reaction. We had to have them both.” In Eastern Europe, Claire said, if a child with special needs is not adopted by age four, they are sent to an adult mental institution. Both parents said that if they had more space, they would already be thinking about adopting more children with special needs a few years down the road. “There are too many kids out there

who need parents,” Dan said. “It is so hard knowing there are so many others like them who will probably never have a home.” When the Gremlings returned home to Findlay, Eliza’s heart was repaired and their new brothers took them in just like they would two more biological sisters. Today the Gremlings are a happy – and very busy - family of eight. Dan works at Marathon Petroleum Company and Claire is the nurse at St. Michael the Archangel School. The boys, Gabe, 14; Micah, 12; Zach, 11; and Simon, 8, are busy with hockey, while the girls attend Washington Elementary preschool and take to the ice with Gliding Stars’ adaptive skating. The girls supply a generous helping of personality to the family. Eliza loves to sit on her Dad’s lap reading books and soaking up information. She would probably stay there all day if she could, Dan said. She is also one to wear her emotions on her sleeve. “She’s either beaming or upset,” Claire said, laughing. Mollie, on the other hand will never sit still. Claire describes her often grinning, but maybe up to a little mischief. Neither parent thinks about the girls as having special needs, never defining them by any differences. “I never gave much thought about it,” Dan said. “I wouldn’t think of them as handicapped or anything like that. They’re just people who develop differently. I guess we just enjoy them as they are.” And enjoy the girls they have. Eliza and Mollie have undoubtedly been graced with all of the love they can handle. “They have been an amazing blessing to our family and our life,” Claire said. “I couldn’t imagine it without them.”

Find them online at www.kathyskornerarcadia. com and on Facebook under “Kathy’s Korner.” Carryout available. Also check out The Sterling Center, Rachel and Matt Sterling’s new professional catering service at 4570 Fostoria Ave., Findlay, with catering for 10 to 1,000 people with a full-service staff. For more information call 419-581-0574 or email kathyskorner@tds.net. Kathy’s Korner is a quaint restaurant frozen in time, where everybody knows everybody. It’s a place where owner Rachel Sterling rises each morning at 3:30 a.m. to make homemade pies, where the pop comes in cans, and where they started taking credit cards only three years ago. “This is the third generation the restaurant has been in the family,” said Rachel’s husband and co-owner, Matt. “My wife is the daughter of Kathy, and Kathy’s mom started the restaurant 30 years ago. Rachel is the heart and soul of this place. She started working here as a young girl, taking orders and learning the recipes.” Kathy’s Korner was established in 1985, and Matt Sterling explained that everything is homemade, using grandma’s recipes. They cut their own meats, make their own salads, and are wellknown for their pies, sauces, and delicious home-style cooking. A reliable and welcoming gathering place, the restaurant could be considered the social center of Arcadia, bustling with a population of just under 600 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. For our purposes making the drive from Findlay, the kids and I were espe-

cially excited to bring a special guest to this month’s food review in place of my husband: my mother Kathy. Yes, even spelled with a “K!” Our Kathy lives in Fremont, as do my in-laws, and all too happy to make our way inside this curiosity, by-passed so many times on the road. There is a lot to take in on the Kathy’s Korner menu, so much that my mom and I both had a hard time making a choice. Specials are offered each day of the week, and the prices are very reasonable. Other offerings include several appetizers, soups, many salads, sandwiches, wraps, subs, a number of chicken selections, several tasty burgers, baskets and platters, and full out dinners, both regular and on the lighter side. They also have a great kids menu and offer homemade pies, ice cream, root beer floats and milkshakes for dessert. I ended up ordering a mushroom Swiss burger with sweet potato fries, while Kathy went with a turkey wrap and regular fries. We decided, with goofy wide grins, that we would save room for pie. The kids, who are probably going to make me lose this job if they don’t get a little more exciting, both ordered chicken strips and fries off the kids menu. My 9-year-old son really threw in a thrill by adding a side salad with ranch. The kids enjoyed the chicken and fries, gobbling them up quickly. My son was pleased with the side salad and my 6-year-old daughter did award the chicken a label of, “Awesome.” She was quite entertained when my sweet potato fries came. They were long and thin-cut, and her nimble little fingers could not resist lifting them high from my plate for

all to marvel and giggle at their impressive length. The mushroom Swiss burger was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Seriously - I sat there thinking I would probably have to start driving to Arcadia regularly to satisfy a craving for them. The meat was juicy and delicious, melting in my mouth. I noticed the mushrooms were freshly cut and certainly not from a can, the melted cheese, lovely, all served on a delicately toasted bun. Kathy characterized her turkey wrap as “tasty,” and she noted the tomatoes were especially fresh and ripe. Inside were turkey, tomato, lettuce, and she wasn’t sure if it was ranch or mayonnaise. (That’s ok, I guess I’ll let it go, but only because her name is Kathy, you know, like the restaurant.) And now we arrive at the part when time stood still: Dessert. For the kids to share, I ordered the “Large Chocolate Chip Sundae.” Upon delivery to the table - a giant glass chalice oozing with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chip cookies and syrup - it caused quite a commotion in the restaurant. One of the waitresses later told me that a lot of the time, “whole families will share that.” Well, my kids just about polished it off themselves, with sloppy, giant smiles and really big bellies. Kathy and I waffled as we tried to make our all-important pie choice. She finally ordered the coconut pie while I went with the mixed berry. All I know is, it is very obvious those pies are made from scratch, fresh each morning. Mine was slightly tart, yet sweet, with a wonderful texture. I usually don’t bother eating the last of the crust, but this was so good, I went for it. The coconut pie had

Bathroom amenities Clean and adequate High chairs Yes, and booster seats Got Milk? White and chocolate.

Kid’s menu? Yes, nice variety of choices Food allergy concerns? Always willing to try to accommodate

a great mix of soft pudding and fresh coconut throughout, topped with a lovely meringue. We swooned. It is safe to say we will stop at Kathy’s Korner again. I want to try more menu items and pie, and Matt Sterling, his staff, and the Arcadia locals were incredibly friendly. The kids will never forget that thrilling dessert they were able to tackle together, a bond never to be broken. And it doesn’t hurt that each child who eats at Kathy’s Korner is sent home with a little bag of candy, just in case you didn’t get enough excitement.
