University of Findlay and Hancock Historical Museum Creating Davis Learning Institute The University of Findlay and Hancock Historical Museum are working together to provide enhanced digital storytelling experiences at the newly named Davis Learning Institute on the museum’s campus. The collaboration, currently in the planning and fundraising stages, will transform the relocated Davis House, built in 1843, into a site for collecting, sharing and archiving community narratives. Organizers intend for the Institute to serve as a vital historical preservation link, becoming a motivator for societal improvement through its storytelling as well as being a space for collective idea generation and impact. “Very few historic preservation projects look at the social benefits that are possible,” said museum Director Sarah Sisser. “One thing we hope to do is capitalize on a sense of place, which can then support stability and social change.” The Museum and UF already have a history of storytelling collaboration, via the Ohio Farm Stories project, to preserve the rich history of the region’s agricultural heritage. The two entities also are working together on the Findlay Floods project, gathering flood-related stories. The Davis Learning Institute will continue to be owned by the Museum while The University will contribute technical skills, equipment and staff.
Hancock Leadership Class of 2019 Now Forming The Hancock Leadership program is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 class. Participants will connect with other class members and gain increased knowledge about the Findlay-Hancock County community. The program launches in August followed by one full-day monthly session, with a graduation ceremony in May. Sessions are held on Tuesdays from 8am-5pm at various locations throughout the Hancock County. Class members are also required to take part in a service project with participation outside of regular class times. Hancock Leadership utilizes a Positive Leadership curriculum which provides a rich experience for participants to grow together through lively group discussion and personal development activities. Tuition is $825. Arrangements for payment can be made with a participant’s employer and/or sponsoring organization. A limited number of scholarships are available to applicants who require financial assistance. For more information or to apply, visit FindlayHancockChamber.com. Marathon Center for the Performing Arts and Findlay Light Opera Company Collaboration Announced A collaboration between Marathon Center for the Performing Arts (MCPA) and Findlay Light Opera Company (FLOC) was announced at a reception of MCPA and FLOC board members and supporters on the 30th anniversary of FLOC’s founding. The collaboration comes as part of a two-year long partnership plan between MCPA and FLOC to bring community theater back to the Central Auditorium, now the Donnell Theater, FLOC’s original performance home. Funded in part by a grant from the Hancock County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the collaboration will begin this fall with four cabaret shows in the Roy & Marcia Armes Hall as part of the MCPA’s LIVE@ ARMES Series. Winter of 2019/2020 will feature a semi-stage concert version of a musical with an allcommunity cast. This project will support a revival of the Findlay Light Opera Company which has been largely inactive since 2007. For more information call MCPA at 419-423-2787, visit marathoncenterarts.org and “Marathon Center for the Performing Arts” on Facebook.
Synergy Central Now Open at Findlay High School Findlay High School has made the most of some unused space by creating a flexible learning area for students and teachers. Synergy Central, named for a concept in the best selling book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” is wired for sound and includes a whiteboard, many TV screens and tables that can be arranged to facilitate student learning in a variety of room settings. With that flexibility, Synergy Central can be used for a variety of purposes such as offering an open area for specific lessons without having to move around desks in the classroom, study halls and tutoring sessions. The room was renovated with input from students, teachers, administrators and school librarian, Amanda Brasfield. As educational techniques evolve, spaces similar to Synergy Central are becoming more common in schools around the country. 6

Big Changes for Newly Named Kan Du Group
Local Teen Attends Space Camp Kayla Johnson’s unique opportunity By Emilee Roberts
The Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy (HLCA), a unique scholarship program for children of Honeywell employees ages 16-18, uses interactive technology, science-oriented workshops and team exercises to teach science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). 325 students from 35 countries and 25 U.S. states, including Findlay High School student Kayla Johnson, participated in a week-long program in Huntsville, Alabama.
A unique experience “My favorite part from Space Camp was meeting all the people,” Johnson shared. “The people I met throughout the experience were amazing. We were put into groups and had to form a bond on the first day with kids from across the world.” “Honeywell gave us an amazing opportunity with great people to guide us. Team Focus not only bonded within the group but with our team leaders as well.”
Application and anticipation Each year, several hundred students apply for admission, with entry into the program granted after a rigorous application and review process based on academic achievement and community involvement. The application process creates much anticipation. Johnson explained, “This application process is actually very competitive. Over 2,000 students from all around the world applied and only 300-400 are chosen... When I received the email that I would be attending I got really excited! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and a great experience.”
Future aspirations “After High School I’m going into the medical field. I’m going to Rhodes State College in Lima to become a Nurse Practitioner (NP),” Johnson shared. “Going to Huntsville opened my eyes. Space is amazing which is why I have started looking into biomedicine or even aerospace medicine.” “(At the camp) they pushed us saying that we were the Mars generation, and honestly I think we will make it. Brilliant kids from around the world... upon leaving Huntsville we left with so much more than a cool story. We left with friendships, information and a new look at the world around us.”
March brought big changes for the organization many knew as Blanchard Valley Industries, including a name change to Kan Du Group. The nonprofit employer of adults with developmental disabilities is no longer a “sheltered workshop.” And with the name change, the organization is growing and moving as well. Kan Du Group employs about 50 adults. Previously working out of a large warehouse on the eastern edge of the Blanchard Valley Center campus, operations have moved to a rented building at 11728 Hancock County Rd. 99. The new location moves production closer to the industries it serves, explained Mike Chiarelli, CEO of Kan Du Group. “They (our workers) want to be involved in the community and we’re teaching them more and more how to engage in the community. This kind of puts them in the middle of everything.” Kan Du Studio, part of Kan Du Group, moved to 322 W. Main Cross St., in February 2017, with Kan Du Group’s day habilitation program also moving to the same building early in February 2018. Now referred to as “Center 322,” Kan Du Group’s day habilitation program provides regular activities for adults with disabilities. The Group will also use office space and conference rooms on the second floor for training and other events. “This will truly be a community building,” said Kelli Grisham, superintendent of the Hancock County Board of Developmental Disabilities. “We have created meeting rooms and work space for our tenants. It also gives our agency access to badly needed meeting space.” 419-422-6386, kandugroup.org, “Kan Du Group formerly Blanchard Valley Industries” on Facebook

Reading Rocks at the Findlay Hancock Library this Summer
Every child who registers for the summer reading program receives a free book.
By Laurie Pressel
Put reading high on your family’s list of summer activities! The Findlay-Hancock County Public Library can make it happen. The library’s SummerREAD is designed to encourage and incentivize reading for the whole family. “Libraries Rock” is the theme for the 2018 SummerREAD. The program runs from June 1 until July 28. Monday, June 4 is the official kick off day for the program and special activities are planned at the main library the entire day. Children, teens and adults can sign up for the program at any time. Parents can even sign up babies and toddlers too young to read and track the number of books they read to them.
Once you sign up for the program, start tracking the number of books you read. You set your own goal—from one book to 100 books or more. You can even turn it into a family competition! Each time you visit the library, simply report the books you’ve read and be entered into weekly drawings for awesome prizes. The library is also planning special programs for all age levels at the main library throughout the program. One special family program takes place on June 20, at 7pm under the skylight in Adult Services. The Spoon Man, a musical comedian, will be performing his “totally clean act, he never uses dirty silverware.” For more information and a specific listing of SummerREAD activities, visit the library’s Website: findlaylibrary.org.

Local Moms Reflect on Motherhood
How do you celebrate Mother’s Day and what does it mean to you? We asked some local mothers and grandmothers to share their thoughts on motherhood. By Betsey Watson Mascaro
It’s too hard to choose my favorite part of being a mom, but I do love seeing the world through my kids’ eyes. They appreciate and are in awe of the simple things while adults (including myself!) are often too busy to notice. I also love the rare moments when my kids are all happily playing together. Even if it’s just running in the backyard or playing with play-doh, it brings me joy to see their friendships with one another grow. On Mother’s Day, I typically get to sleep in, skip the Jessi Kempf loves slowing down and seeing the cooking and cleaning and world through her children’s eyes. get a couple of sweet gifts from the kids and Brian. We don’t have any major traditions at this point, but getting some extra sleep and not having to cook make for a great day! My favorite Mother’s Day memory would probably be the year that I became a mom. Our oldest daughter, Eden, was born just two weeks before Mother’s Day and we spent the day with my siblings, parents and grandparents. I had a whole new appreciation for my mom and just felt overwhelmed by how much love I had in my heart. It was a really sweet time.
Julie Fisher enjoys a fall day with her little pumpkins.
Julie Fisher
Husband Matt, Children:Emmalin (5), Ethan and Nolan (3) I love staying home with the kids and, although it has its challenges, the experience is rewarding. My favorite part of motherhood is watching the kids grow and learn new things, playing well together, imagining and creating in new ways. I enjoy getting outside with them without the distractions of technology and TV and making memories as a family. For Mother’s Day, we keep it pretty simple. Just being with my family is my goal. Of course, I enjoy a little extra attention and a few less chores for the day! If it works to be with my mom or mother-in-law, it is nice to honor them as well. Our "first born" is our 9 year old chocolate lab, Monty. He has had his share of medical issues, so we joke that he broke us into parenthood well! After a handful of years, it was such a blessing to officially cross over to a Mother's Day with our daughter! And it only continues to get better since we welcomed our twin boys in 2015.

Husband Robert, Daughters Beth Stewart (37), Christine Prusa (35), Trudie McEvoy (33); Grandchildren Alice (5), Mark (3) and William Stewart (6mo) I love the variety involved with being a mom. The fact that as babies it was just the challenge of every breath and everything they did, and now I get to enjoy them as adults. Every age has had joy and pain, and I’ve really enjoyed that part. We have three daughters and three grandchildren but we don’t really have any Mother’s Day traditions. I think back to my mother and she liked milk glass. I remember buying it for her for Mother’s Day, and I can distinctly remember the stores where I’d buy gifts for her. But for years when people would ask what I’m doing on Mother’s Day, I’d always say I was doing the same thing I do every day – mothering! As the girls got older, though, I remember the first time they made me breakfast in bed. Their joy in doing for me was such a gift.
Creating family memories, especially around the holiday time, is my favorite part of being a mom. Our Mother’s Day traditions involve honoring my mom or my husband’s mom. My mom passed away last July, and we may start a new tradition after my husband’s mom passes, but right now Mother’s Day is about celebrating the matriarchs of the family. One year we planned to surprise Bob’s mom so I called up my fatherin-law and told him to plan a day trip but don’t tell her that you’re coming to our house. So when they pulled into our house on Mother’s Day, we had a gift and a meal and she teared up and said, “I thought you forgot me on Mother’s Day!” That’s a Mother’s Day I’ll always remember.

Gardening for Pleasure
Marilynn Beltz shares her gardening expertise By Laurie Pressel
Marilynn Beltz started gardening as a little girl alongside her mother and she hasn’t stopped since. Today, she shares decades of her gardening expertise with the Findlay community as an active volunteer. Gardening is both a relaxing and a challenging avocation for Marilynn. She enjoys the simple pleasure of working in nature with the sun on her back and her hands in the dirt. Yet she also appreciates the challenge of trying to grow new plants and keeping her garden thriving in Northwest Ohio weather. Tending a variety of plants Marilynn’s three-quarter acre city plot resembles a cottage garden. In the height of summer, her beds and borders are packed with an assortment of annuals, perennials and vegetables that explode in a riot of colors and scents. “I dabble in everything,”Marilynn explains. “When I acquire a new plant, I walk around the garden and look for an open space to put it. Nothing is coordinated in my garden, I just do it!” Indoors, Marilynn turned her porch into a four-season room so she could bring tender plants in from the garden during the winter months. She also tends to a cockatiel, a rescue Chihuahua
mix and more than two dozen houseplants. “Whenever a plant needs a home, I’m willing to take it,” she said. Devoting time to volunteer work When she retired in 2003 after a 38-year career as a nurse at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Marilynn began devoting more time and energy to volunteer work. She became a Hancock County Master Gardener through the Ohio State University Extension and took on an active role in the Men’s and Women’s Garden Club. Every year, Marilynn plays a key role in setting up and volunteering at the master gardener educational booth at the Hancock County Fair. She also helps children who are registering pumpkins and sunflowers in the county fair, and she oversees the judging of these categories. At Findlay’s Community Garden, she fields questions from novice gardeners and helps to plant, weed and harvest the plot maintained by the Master Gardeners. Last year, the Master Gardener plot produced 6,300 pounds of produce that was donated to local food banks to help families in need. In the winter, Marilynn coordinates the highly popular wreathmaking classes sponsored by the Master

Beautifying the community Marilynn also helps to maintain the beautiful Triangle Garden located at the intersection of Tiffin Ave. and Fostoria Ave. Previously, the site was a dumping ground filled with rocks and trash that people threw out their car windows. Now, thanks to the Men’s and Women’s Garden Club, the roadway plot is filled with luscious flowering plants from spring through fall. Marilynn meets fellow garden club members at the Triangle Garden every Thursday morning to plant, weed and water. Afterwards, the volunteers socialize over coffee and doughnuts at the nearby Fort Findlay Coffee & Doughnut Shoppe. “I’m a people pleaser,” says Marilynn.
“I always appreciate it when we are out working in the Triangle Garden and people drive by and shout out compliments.” Marilynn typically spends 30 to 40 hours a week gardening. However, she encourages everyone—even those who only have a few minutes a day to spare— to grow something. “You get a lot of pleasure watching something grow and bloom,” she says. “Take time to enjoy those simple things. Stop and smell the roses.”

Fresh, bold flavors
By Betsey Watson Mascaro The children’s menu includes familiar favorites like chicken fingers along with kid-friendly Mexican cuisine (including our kids’ beloved cheese quesadilla). One note: the menu online is dramatically smaller than the inperson restaurant menu which includes a range of well-priced lunch specials plus countless additional dishes! Finally, after our attentive server brought our drinks and a refill basket of chips, Jeremy settled on Pollo con Crema and a tamale while I opted for the Burrito Embuelto with chicken. As more diners arrived, I noticed that some guests were regulars - the mark of a great restaurant! All the while, servers passed by loaded with plates of food. More than once the kids remarked about the sizzling fajitas at another table, filling the air with delicious smells. La Charrita offers a full bar, which is separate from the dining area, and a party room for up to 40 guests.
While Findlay has no shortage of Mexican restaurants, off the beaten path up on North Main is La Charrita. Over the years, we’ve dined there many times, most recently on a Monday evening. When we arrived, tables full of diners dotted the dining room and the hostess sat us at a (clean!) booth with a supply of chips and salsa, which passed my high standards - fresh flavor and a little kick of spice. My kids, me and even my husband (who eschews chunky sauces) loves it. Paired with warm, crisp nottoo-salty chips, we were in our way to Mexican food heaven. Full bellies assured As we looked over the menu, our son asked for “the cheesy tortilla thing” (aka a quesadilla) with rice and beans on the side. In between chips, the girls announced that they wanted the same thing. And, with that, went back to eating chips and salsa. My husband, Jeremy, and I spent a long time reviewing the large menu. Thankfully, as a guide, the menu is divided into sections such as seafood, pork and even, an under-400 calorie listing. Familiar Mexican favorites like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas and fajitas are offered ala carte, as part of a combo and with or without meat. For those looking for more authentic Mexican food, La Charrita offers several versions of mole.

quesadilla and was working on the rice and beans. The girls’ quesadillas, golden-brown crispy on the outside with ooey-gooey cheese on the inside, also ate their entire quesadilla along with varying amounts of rice and beans. Jeremy enjoyed his Pollo con Crema – chicken sautéed in a tangy, creamy sauce with three kinds of peppers. When I sampled it, I instantly loved the flavor but – WOWZA – my lips were burning! Jeremy declared his tamale “the best he’d ever eaten in a restaurant” (high praise from a guy who regularly enjoys homemade tamales from a friend’s Mexican grandmother!). We ordered a side of guacamole for the table and enjoyed the smooth, creamy flavor punctuated by fresh onion and cilantro. My Burrito Embuelto arrived smothered in a white cheese sauce. I enjoyed the crisp lettuce and fresh guacamole flavor that balanced the creamy sauce, and found the whole dish only improved with the addition of the tangy salsa. Delicious from start to finish Despite being full, I enjoyed bites of two traditional desserts – sopapillas, with ice cream, and flan. The smooth, sweet creaminess of the flan, a Mexican custard, was quite different than the
sopapillas, light, crispy bits of deliciousness, either alone or “dipped” into the vanilla ice cream. La Charrita provided an amazing dining experience that included the hallmarks of good family dining: a clean, fun restaurant, quick and friendly service and delicious food. But what makes it a family favorite is that we can enjoy a familiar dish or follow the menu to new territories of flavor.
