Profiles

What do you admire in people? What I admire in people is their willingness and ability to help. This would be a very sad country, and world, if we didn’t have the volunteers that we have across the land. So I admire people that give back to their community. What is your pet peeve? I hate ignorance. A pet peeve of mine is to help people understand those things that they don’t understand. And to make sure they understand, especially, to vote. What is something most people don’t know about you? I’m a most giving person. What are the words you live by? To always be a positive example, and to help humanity.

Earl Mack spent over three decades in public service and now spends his time working toward helping the community with the Toledo Buffalo Soldiers.

What advice would you give to the younger you? To always be persistent in your dreams, make a plan, then achieve that dream by putting it in action.

Buffalo Soldiers president’s decades of community service By Jeff McGinnis

Take the ride

Mack has another love— riding motorcycles. “I started riding shortly after being discharged from the military in ‘71. I was kind of a young, wild guy back then, and just trying to find myself. I started riding a 750 Honda,” Mack explains. “Riding motorcycles, you can just feel free. Kind of forget about things and just enjoy the ride. And if you’ve never ridden or been a motorcyclist, it’s hard to understand that. But just hitting the open road is therapeutic.”

Community service on wheels

So it made sense after his career in law enforcement ended that Mack would continue his passion for community service through a new outlet: The Buffalo Soldiers MC, a motorcycle club named after Army regiments of African American soldiers formed after the Civil War.

December 2019

What inspires you now? What inspires me, I guess, is the ability to reach out and help others. My firstborn son, Earl Mack III, was killed by a gunshot at the age of ten years old. And so I do all I can to help others, and especially to help parents, to never have to go through something like that. What’s your favorite food? I eat so much— if you see my Facebook page, I’m always eating! My favorite food would be any kind of barbeque chicken. My favorite dessert is banana pudding.

Mack Gives Back

Earl Mack loves to help people. He worked in law enforcement for over three decades, beginning with a stint with the University of Toledo Police Department and ending with his 2012 retirement from the post of Deputy Director of the Ohio Department for Public Safety. Before that, Mack had served as a combat medic during the Vietnam War.

Who is someone you would like to meet? I think I would love to meet Robert De Niro. I just really am fond of him.

“In 2011, I joined the Columbus Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers. And I was still working then. When I decided to retire and spend the rest of my time back home here in Toledo in 2013, I put the Toledo Chapter together.” Mack is the President of the Toledo Buffalo Soldiers, and under his leadership, the club has become a celebrated part of the Glass City community, with service projects like the revitalization of Wilson Park and drawing praise for instructing youths how to deal with the police when stopped.

Helping others

The Soldiers also work to deliver free meals to veterans who cannot leave their homes on Veteran’s Day. “It’s such a wonderful program, and we do that in conjunction with the Lucas County Veterans Service Commission. And this year, we are so excited because the Ohio National Guard has joined up here in Toledo.” Mack hits the open road on a Harley these days and often his road trips take him on journeys to help his fellow Buffalo Soldiers across the nation. “We support other chapters throughout the country, so there’s a lot of that,” Mack said. “Florida, Albuquerque, New Mexico we go everywhere to support those chapters and their events.”

While online merchants offer unique opportunities, there are many independent, locally-owned businesses that can transform your photos into wonderful gifts. As a bonus, many specialize in customizable pieces, allowing you to leave all of the creative problem-solving to the professionals.

Holiday Photo Gifting

American Frame

See images of your children, pets and projects on unexpectedly useful items By Marilyn Cappellino A great cell phone feature is the device’s ability to snap spontaneous photos anytime, anywhere, requiring no loading of film, no special lighting and no tripod (though a selfie stick does occasionally come in handy). Smartphones have a selfcontained camera that allows each of us to take and collect photos. But then what? What do we do with all those photos of our children, grandchildren, pets, plants and travel destinations? Beyond traditional photo albums or picture frames, or storing them on DVDs, what can we do to share all those fabulous shots? The answer is “plenty.” Both local and online merchants are offering an unprecedented variety of createyour-own photo products, allowing even rookie photographers to design extraordinary holiday gifts.

The best gifts I’ve ever given

I discovered a couple of these online shops by accident while Christmas shopping last year. Before long, I was fully absorbed with placing my digital photos into preformed templates to create some of the best-received holiday gifts I’ve ever given. Thanks to Shutterfly.com, likely the internet’s best-known producer of personalized photo books, I used over 70 photos to produce an 11”x 9” full-color, 32-page, hardcover memory book. The book was a gift for my grandson, then a high school senior, and it captured many moments of his final year playing high school football. Knowing a few others who would cherish those same memories, I had book copies made for his parents, grandfather and aunt.

The cost per book was under $60. Though the time it took to select and position the photos was considerable, the actual set-up took less than a couple of hours. As gifts go, it was a hit. My daughters love pictures of their pets as much as photos of their children. For them, I made artsy gifts at Minted.com. Minted uses original graphic designs to create wall hangings, greeting cards, gift wraps and backdrops for personalized paper products. By inserting photos of my grandpups into beautifully designed templates, I personalized a variety of wrapping paper with matching gift tags that my daughters used all year for their own gift-giving. Wrapping paper can be bought in minimum quantities of 5 for about $15. For damage protection, they are delivered rolled in sturdy tube mailers.

We’ll Frame It

328 W Dussel Dr, Maumee. 419-897-0591. wellframeit.com Since 1995, We’ll Frame It has been turning Toledo area photos and memorabilia into beautifully designed keepsakes, with plenty of options to choose from.

Laura’s Framing Place

4400 Heatherdowns Blvd, #9. 419-893-7263. facebook.com/ laurasframingplace Beyond simply framing your treasured photos, Laura’s has plenty of ideas for incorporating their framed works with your home decor.

Frameworks Art and Frame

5660 Mayberry Square E, Sylvania. 419-885-8787. frameworksartandframe.com Open since 1984, owner Michael Calandra’s shop offers the latest in unique designs as well as classic choices to give your memories the care they deserve.

Make a mural

MuralsYourWay.com is a site that resolves the problem of a blank wall by covering it fully with a significant photo that you’ve taken. Maybe it’s of a garden, a dream car, or a spectacular sunset loved by your gift recipient. An image rising floor to ceiling is striking on nearly any wall in a home or office and promises long-lasting enjoyment. Murals Your Way sells create-yourown murals in 3 standard sized panels. Prices start at around $150. Simply load your image in .jpg format into the company’s online template, enter your preferred dimensions, choose one of the 6 material selections, then submit your order. It’s that easy.

From photo books to customized wrapping paper, to gift tags or self-sticking labels, my family enjoyed seeing images of their children, pets and project. Most importantly though, these gift ideas gave me a chance to share many of the photos that otherwise would remain largely unseen on my phone.

Savings Beware During this Holiday Season Protect your money, resources and sometimes… your pride By Teresa Ambord Will the scams never cease?

The answer is, not as long as there’s money out there to be plucked out of someone’s pocket, piggy bank, retirement account, credit card account— whatever. Never assume that your elderly parent or your grandchildren or anyone in between has too much common sense to fall for a scam that seems obvious to you. Some enormously successful people have been sucked into lottery scams, Ponzi schemes, and have fallen prey to the thievery of scoundrels. Here are some recent scams making the rounds, some of which are old and dusty, but still effective.

Celebs asking you to donate?

It may be flattering. But chances are, if your favorite celebrity has reached out to you on Facebook or other social media, you should assume it’s probably a trap. Scammers have been posing as celebrities asking fans to send money for various reasons. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns it might be to support a charity or to claim a prize of some sort. Even if you only contribute a few dollars, keep in mind that you may be giving away the keys to your bank account or credit card account if you use one of those methods to pay. Of course, famous people do lend their names to causes they support. But thieves capitalize on that tendency, especially on social media where they can impersonate someone else anonymously. If you get a message that appears to be from a celebrity, asking for donations, the FTC has the following advice: Do an online search on your own. Enter the celebrity’s name and the word “scam” and see what comes up. Do the same with the name of the charity or cause they claim to support.

Unsure if a cause is real?

If you were contacted by a charity or cause and are unsure about its validity, consider the following steps:

10

www.mlivingnews.com

Don’t be rushed into a decision. Thieves depend on urgency because they want you to act before common sense kicks in. Send no money until you’ve taken the time to ask someone you trust what they think. Check the validity of charities through these websites: Give.org, Charitynavigator.org, Charitywatch. org and Guidestar.org. If you discover you’ve sent money to a charity scam, contact your bank and explain that you think you’ve been defrauded. Ask them to reverse the transaction if possible.

Sweetheart scams live on

Sweetheart scams, from relationships that originate on the internet, often have Mr. (or Ms.) Right asking for loans. As the holiday season grows nearer, lonely people get lonelier, and they become more vulnerable. So keep an eye on your loved ones. If you suspect your elderly relative has been the victim of a scam, report it to the police and to a local advocate for the elderly. You will not only keep your loved one safe, but you will keep others from falling into the same trap. Local services to contact that offer elder advocacy support include:

• Lucas County Department of Job

What is a dental bridge, and how do I know if I need one? A dental bridge is a tooth replacement option. Dental bridges are permanently fixed in the mouth. A bridge is just like it sounds. For example, a three-unit bridge would consist of three teeth. The two teeth on each side of the missing tooth gap hold the bridge. These two abutment teeth would support the missing tooth. (See photo on the left.) What’s your advice on proper care for a tooth implant? Dental implants are like natural teeth. Brushing and flossing daily and regularly scheduled professional cleanings are essential to keep your dental implant healthy. How can I prevent gum disease? The best way to prevent gum disease is to brush and floss daily and to regularly schedule recare visits. Mature patients aged 65 and older are to be seen every three months. Replacing missing teeth with dental implants will also prevent bone loss and the shifting of teeth often associated with gum disease. Dental implants not only replace teeth, they promote normal biting and chewing which maintains the surrounding bone.

I grind my teeth at night. Do I need a night guard? It would be beneficial to prevent tooth wear or tooth-related problems. How can I prevent frequent canker sores? Eat less acidic foods and drink more water. What are some signs of infection to watch out for? Perio disease, decay, fistulas, and red swollen gums with pus. How can I prevent gum disease? Routine hygiene visits and homecare. When it comes to my teeth, what’s the worst thing that I can eat? Sugar, pop, candy, and acidic items. How often do you recommend that your patients floss? Is once a day enough, or is it best to floss twice a day? Once a day is OK or at least stimulating the gun tissue daily. Twice a day is best! My teeth are so sensitive. Is there anything I can do about that? You can use sensitive toothpaste, have a dentist evaluate your occlusion, and discuss home care regiments. Can I reverse tooth decay and heal cavities naturally? Yes, only if the decay is not into dentin. What is a dental bridge, and how do I know if I need one? A bridge is a three-unit fixed man-made material, made of porcelain or metal, that is used to bridge the teeth and fill the missing tooth.

Travel Plans Over the holidays? Functional movement tips By Simone Berzen Levy There are plenty of physical and mental stressors involved in holiday travel for people of any age. For seniors, long drives, train rides, or flights can pose specific challenges. No matter the mode of transport, sitting for extended periods of time can result in stiffness and discomfort in the lower back and often in the knees, hips, and feet as well. Restricted legroom can also lead to overall stiffness and exacerbated pain. Unnatural sleep positions, especially for the neck, means you can awake with soreness. Stiff necks can predispose us to headaches. Moreover, all of this can affect your mood. And who wants to be cranky during the holidays?

shoulders back and keep your head upright. Chin slightly tucked in towards the chest. Continue with shoulder rolls: rolling them forward 10 times and roll them back 10 times. 2. Engage “Mountain Pose” in both sitting and, when possible, standing. Rest your feet on the ground

together. Pull the top of your head toward the ceiling and point your fingers towards the ground. Just two minutes in this position lowers cortisol levels and increases testosterone levels, making us feel stronger and more powerful while improving balance and stability. 3. Stand from a seated position and return to sitting. Repeat this sit-

to-stand activity 10 times each hour.

4. Interrupt your sitting every 30 minutes. Find a rest stop and walk

around for five minutes. If you’re on a train or plane, stroll the aisle.

5. Run in your seat. Lift your knees to replicate running for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. 6. Massage your jaw muscles on both sides of the face in front of the ears. Keeping your lips slightly

apart, use two fingers to massage your jaw muscles in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. This will increase circulation and reduce muscle stiffness.

7. Gently turn your head from right to left 5 times. Then tuck your

chin to your chest and slowly raise your head back to the neutral position. Repeat 5 to 10 times. 8. Straighten your legs as much as possible. Circle your ankles, point-

ing and flexing the feet. Repeat 10 times on each side. You can do this standing as well.

9. While seated with knees bent and feet flat on the floor, raise and lower your heels 10 times. 10. Don’t forget to breathe.

Place your hands on your tummy, close your eyes and breathe in and out, deeply and slowly. This will slow down your breathing and heart rate and induce rest and relaxation. The holidays are for family, friends, and fun. Employing some anytime/anywhere functional movements can help ease the stress in your body and your mind. December 2019

Bulgaria in Bowling Green

Naslada Bistro captures the spirit of European dining By Jeff McGinnis Dining at Naslada Bistro is like taking a trip to Europe, in a culinary sense. In some cases, such hyperbole would be just canny marketing, but in the case of Naslada, that experience is their central goal. Naslada owner and Chef Boyko “Boby” Mitov wants every customer to sample authentic European cuisine, and to garner a sense of what food is like outside the United States.

Missing Europe

When Mitov first came to America from Bulgaria in 1999, he quickly noticed that the food here tasted nothing like the cuisine back in his native land. “It’s not flavorful, everything is processing, everything is for convenience but not for nutritious value. I believe you eat the food because you need nutrients for your body to lead whatever lifestyle you want to lead,” Mitov said in his heavily-accented English.

Organic and clean

“After a few years of eating food here, I just said, ‘I cannot do it anymore.’ And that’s why I opened Naslada as farm-to-table, organic, clean. I felt great [eating that way], and I wanted to give that opportunity to my customers.” Mon–Thurs 11am-11pm | Fri & Sat 11am-12 Midnight

Naslada Bistro opened in 2003, originally occupying a space in Woodland Mall. The Bistro soon relocated to its current space on Bowling Green’s Main Street in 2006. “I just transformed the whole place into food [that you can get when] you’re in Europe. So you don’t need to travel to Europe, you can just [come] to BG. The food is very authentic,” Mitov explains.

Right at home

Naslada can be somewhat challenging to find for a first-time visitor, its small and subdued entrance competing for attention with more eye-catching storefronts down Main Street. Once inside, you’re made to feel right at home: the atmosphere is warm and friendly, with plenty of touches in the decor to pay tribute to Chef Mitov’s home country. An enthusiastic staff greets diners, shows them to a table and reviews the evening’s specials. Chef Mitov is hard-pressed to select one item he would consider a “signature dish” from what is a relatively small menu. He puts his heart and soul into making every offering and prides himself on being able to find something for every palate. If you’re a vegetarian, you can try the portabella

guyvich. Red meat lovers can try his delicious German-style stroganoff. And if you prefer chicken, there’s the chicken piccata. “One lady stopped in a couple weeks ago, and said ‘Wow.’ She ordered chicken piccata, and said, ‘I’ve traveled a lot, I’ve been in Italy, this is the closest chicken piccata I’ve ever eaten outside of Italy.’ So that kind of tells you what kind of food I have.”

Made to order

The chicken piccata was my choice, and at 18 dollars, it was reasonably priced for a quality restaurant like Naslada. The food takes a bit of time to prepare, but that’s understandable— everything on the menu is made to order. “You cannot come into this restaurant and come out in 40 minutes. I say on the first page of the menu— when you come here, everything is uncooked, so I create the meal when you come. And that takes time. I’m not a fast food place. And people who appreciate that come in here,” Mitov said. When the piccata arrives, it is the very definition of “worth the wait.” Grilled fresh chicken breasts coated with a delectable lemon sauce, served with organic noodles and capers, as well as a few grilled asparagus spears. Delicious and filling, the portion is generous enough to allow me to take a box home (a true rarity for me).

Mature Concerns Wheelchair accessibility: Yes. Specialty diets: Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options available. Clean: Yes, beautifully maintained. Lighting: Slightly subdued in the main dining area, but still very well illuminated. Noise level: Just right to encourage conversation. Children welcome: Yes. Parking: Metered on the street and in nearby lots, but usually free during business hours.

A good night with friends

Though the food is superb, that’s only part of what makes the Naslada experience so special. The wait for your meal has a secondary benefit— encouraging conversation in a beautiful atmosphere. Naslada is Bulgarian for “a satisfying evening in the company of friends,” and Chef Mitov’s establishment intends to provide everyone who eats there with just that experience. “I believe that when they have a very good night with friends and eat a nice meal, it just tastes different. And they see the difference.” 5-9pm, Monday-Thursday. 5-10 pm, Friday & Saturday. 182 S. Main St., Bowling Green. 419-373-6050. nasladabistro.com December 2019

One Room Challenge

{BEFORE} I removed the wallpaper and applied a moody gray paint to the wall. I swapped out the formal chandelier with a modern light fixture and added a weathered, wood table with black chairs to give the room a more casual vibe.

Six weeks to modernize a dining room By Lindsey Mahoney Photos by Mary Wyar

Lindsey Mahoney participated in the Better Homes & Gardens One Room Challenge, where designers renovate a room in six weeks while documenting their progress along the way.

To see the full dining room transformation, visit buildingbluebird.com. For more information, contact Lindsey Mahoney at lindseymahoney@ howardhanna.com.

If you are like me, one of the best motivators to complete a project is a deadline. That’s why I decided to participate in this Better Homes & Gardens magazine’s One Room Challenge, where participants transform a room from start to finish in only six weeks while documenting the process along the way. With the holidays coming up, this was a perfect opportunity to renovate my dining room. This year, more than 200 guest participants documented their renovation progress each week from the design concept to a final reveal. Along the way, we formed a community and cheered each other on, asking for advice when needed and offering suggestions when one of our fellow renovators ran into a roadblock. I made new friends and was inspired from following other projects to incorporate these ideas into other areas of my home. Talking more about my project, when we first moved into our home, the dining room was a formal space built for a 1960s home. I wanted to modernize the dining room and give it a more relaxed feel. Whenever I design a space, I like to include some quality (aka more expensive) pieces that can withstand daily wear and tear, while also peppering in DIY projects and thrifted items to save money.

20

With the bulk of my budget going towards the light, table and chairs, I had to get thrifty with the rest of my design. I found a beautiful buffet at Consign-It and used a Rust-oleum Furniture Kit to paint it black. It turned out better than I could have imagined!

The back wall was my biggest challenge— it is the focal point of the room and whatever I put on the wall had to be substantial. After much deliberation, I realized the best focal point for where we gathered to eat as a family each night was our own smiling faces! I built a wood art ledge to run along the wall and used black frames I already owned to create the gallery of family photos.

www.mlivingnews.com

For the final reveal, I worked with Bartz Viviano Florists to create a beautiful holiday floral arrangement to inspire One Room Challenge followers. The design came together perfectly. In the end, this six-week project cost me $3,000 for all materials and labor. With my dining room now complete, I am looking forward to hosting my first dinner party in the new space.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps Ohioans at or below 175 percent of the federal poverty guidelines pay their heating bills. Applied directly to the customer’s utility or bulk fuel bill, the benefit can help manage heating costs. When applying, individuals need to have copies of the following documents: • Most recent utility bills. • A list of all household members (including birth dates and Social Security numbers). • Proof of income for the past 30 days for all household members (12 months for certain income types). • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency for all household members. • Proof of disability (if applicable).
