Truck driver of the year

Local veteran has 100th birthday

Barbara Herman has 34 years of experience working as a truck driver. Now, with five years left until her retirement, she has been honored with a National Tank Truck award as driver of the year. Herman has driven over 1.7 million miles without any accidents during her long career working for K-Limited. Though retirement is in sight, she is still loving the work which allows her to meet so many fascinating people. —EH

Marion Risk celebrated a huge milestone on April 28th with his 100th birthday. Born in the Oklahoma Territory where he was raised on a farm, Risk served in World War II as a Marine stationed at Midway Island. He and his wife Jean have two children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The family celebrated at their church, Collingwood Presbyterian, where he received a card from Representative Marcy Kaptur and was honored by guest speakers Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Governor Mike DeWine. —EH

Award-Winning American Frame

Top Coastal Town

Tree City USA

Sandusky has been named the number one coastal small town after being nominated by USA Today! In this nationwide vote, the Lake Erie coastal town beat 19 others. “Travelers today are looking for authentic, small town experiences,” said Larry Fletcher, President of Lake Erie Shores & Islands. “And when you combine the numerous attractions, restaurants, shopping, dining and overnight accommodation offerings, it’s no wonder that Sandusky earned this recognition.” —EH

For the eighth time, Lakeside Chautauqua has been recognized this year as a Tree City in an awards ceremony hosted by the Village of Crestline and its Tree Commission. The Tree City USA program honors cities that prioritize the maintenance and improvement of its area tree population. Learn more about Tree Cities by visiting arborday.org, where you’ll find that Ohio has the most Tree Cities in the country! —EH

Mail-order custom frame company American Frame was honored with a Better Business Bureau Torch Award for their ethics and integrity in conducting business. The company’s president, Laura Jajko, accepted the award, saying, “We truly believe that by doing good, ethical business, we elevate our employees, our customers, our community and our industry.” Since 1973, American Frame has served the community, adding classes, lectures, charity events, and art exhibits along the way. —EH

Profiles F. Scott Regan

Looking back on 50 years of theater by Jeff McGinnis Theater has been a driving force in F. Scott Regan’s life for over 50 years From his early days as a high school actor, to his first tentative steps as a director in college, to today, working as a respected Glass City stage director. So what first inspired Regan to work in theater all those years ago? “I think it was probably an attempt to be around girls, actually,” he said with a laugh. “The social aspect of theater allows you to make friends, with a project,” “Like, ‘we’re putting on a play,’ rather than the artificial, ‘he likes her’, ‘she likes him’. I think that was a really important part of getting me going, in that I admired certain girls, and they were in the drama club, so...”

100+ times a director Regan’s resume now includes well over 100 credits as a director for multiple companies, starting in college in the 1960s. He attended the State University of New York at Albany, directing his first show— Jean-Paul Sartre’s “No Exit”— while still a student. “I really got turned onto the aspect that, as an actor, you have to worry about one thing. And as a director, you have to think of a whole bunch of things simultaneously. I was probably pretty terrible at first, I think I was more of a ‘here, do it like me’ kind of director, acting it out and having the kids follow that way, rather than leading them to their own understanding.” His career path saw him work at a college in Iowa for a few years before relocating to Bowling Green State UniI have always wanted to... travel around the world. What do you admire in people? Honesty and a sense of humor. What is your pet peeve? Lack of honesty and a lack of a sense of humor. What is something that most people don’t know about you? I’m celebrating my 50th wedding anniversary with my wonderful wife Diane.

Bonus Facts:

ost admire? Who do you m My wife Diane. er food? Favorite Summ Ice cream. ? Favorite Movie . Tootsie

versity in 1982, where he taught and directed shows for over 24 years. While there he also founded the Horizon Youth Theatre, an outreach program at BGSU which is now in its 21st year.

(Partial) retirement In the years since his retirement from BGSU, Regan has also helmed more than a dozen plays for the Toledo Rep (citing his 2013 production of “Death of a Salesman” as a personal highlight), as well as additional productions for Actors Collaborative Toledo. Through it all, his approach to creating works on stage continues to evolve and grow with each show he directs. “What I try to do is change my directing pattern, depending on who I’m working with,” he said. “How much experience, what they’re comfortable with. Sometimes, actors like a certain kind of guidance at first, then explore it on their own. Others say, ‘leave me alone for a while.’ I try to sense where the cast is, in terms of their level of comfort and their experience level.” What advice would you give to the younger you? Don’t take myself quite as seriously. Spend more time not on the job. Who is someone you’d like to meet? Tom Hanks. What inspires you now? Doctors and nurses. I’ve just been through a double bypass heart operation, and it just makes you appreciate the miracles of medicine these days, and what they can do to carve you open and put you back together somehow.

What are words you live by? “Do unto others.” July 2019

Our readers love meeting at Te’kela for happy hour, where drinks and appetizers are half off between 3-5:30pm every day. The chips and salsa are complementary and pair perfectly with many of the specialty margaritas. Te’kela has a special drink menu for each of the seasons. Some favorites are the Peach Blossom Margarita, Snowflake Mojito and a Tequila Sunrise. Try a flight of specialty tequilas— all aged with different finishes like spicy, bold and smooth.

When people talk about Diane Larson they use these adjectives: professional, award winning, relatable and community minded. Many have wondered why Diane, who has been bringing the news into Toledo area viewers’ homes for more than 30 years, hasn’t jumped to a national news syndicate, despite earning numerous awards over long tenure. Instead, Larson insists that she’s having the “time of her life” and doing what she loves in Toledo.

The art of upcycling By Rebecca Booth

CHALK IT UP TO ART Three local women breathe new life into furniture by using chalk-style paints to create unique works of functional art.

Pinterest is filled with thousands of chalk-type painting ideas, tips and tricks. The beauty of working in this medium is that very little prep work is needed before one can begin the refurbishment process. Say goodbye to sanding, stripping off the old stain, and removing built up wax, and say hello to chalk-style paint! Developed in the late 1990s and perfected ever the past 30 years, chalk-style paint will adhere to almost any surface. It may be used thickly to give a chair or dresser a feeling of texture or it can be used thinly for a smooth finish. These paints can also be diluted further to stain untreated wood or a piece of fabric. Chalk paints don’t turn walls into chalkboards. There are over 25 different brands of chalk-style paints, known either as chalk- style or chalk-type paints. The original Chalk Paint ® was first developed and trademarked by Annie Sloan. Over the years other inventors have brought chalk-type paints to market.

Angela Roether Sylvania

Laurie Chagin Ottawa Lake, MichigaN

“I started upcycling furniture when my three boys, now ages 20-25, went to college and wanted to try apartment living, versus dormitory living,” said Laurie Chagin, local mom and full-time trauma team member at Toledo Hospital. “I needed to outfit three entire apartments as inexpensively as I could and as quickly as I could.” Chagin heard about chalk paint and thought she would try it. “I did a small project first and it turned out OK. So, I was curious to see how it would work on larger projects. Before I knew it, I had outfitted all three apartments with a sense of style and panache! Wouldn’t you know that the painting bug bit me?” The Ottawa Lake resident hasn’t been able to put her brush down. “I have purchased and salvaged so much unwanted and discarded furniture throughout the years that I’ve been able to redecorate my whole home. Each room in the house has a different ‘theme’. That shows you how diverse the paint is to work with.” Chagin said her family thinks she should be doing upcyclying full-time… ”But I’m far from ready to retire. Until then, I’ll paint when I’m not making trauma runs with my team at Toledo Hospital.”

Angela Roether works fulltime in a “man’s world” as a construction buyer for Toledobased world known architecture firm, SSOE. “Painting is my way of getting my ‘pretty’ on!” the Sylvania residents said. “I’ve always been artistic and I had my own store a long time ago. After I lost my husband, I had to go back to work full time. Yet I still longed to be creative. Poking around the internet I saw what people were doing with the chalk-type paint and I eventually tried it and fell in love with the medium. I’ve experimented with almost every brand of this type of paint, but my heart truly wasn’t captured until I discovered the Dixie Belle brand. Roether was so impressed with this brand that she called the company to ask if she could buy it wholesale. “They invited me down to Florida for a weekend-long workshop where I learned everything there was to know about the Dixie Belle brand! I was able to study with 10 of the 14 artists who make up the ‘who’s who’ of chalk-style painting.” The Sylvania resident sells upcycled furniture, accessories and Dixie Belle paints in her booth at Consign-It Home Interiors.

Janette Warren Monclova

“I had to start refurbishing furniture because I had become addicted to thrifting and my new and funky finds were pouring out of the basement, garage and my storage unit,” said Janette Warren, art teacher at Jefferson Junior High and Whitmer High School. Warren has been turning trash into treasure all her life. “When I was just a kid I remember finding objects and turning them into outrageous art sculptures.” The same holds true today. “I usually have multiple projects going at the same time. Perhaps that’s why I was running out of space to hold everything!” Art has always been important to Warren, but it wasn’t until she took an art therapy course at BGSU that she knew becoming an art teacher was her calling. “I’m excited every day to teach junior high and high school students about living a creative life. I teach them to think outside the box. Art doesn’t necessarily have to be painting or drawing or ceramics...it can simply be creative ideas. I fuel passion in my students by example. I will bring in something I’ve upcycled or repurposed and say, ‘See? You can actually make money selling stuff like this while having a blast creating it!’” “My goal with any project is to teach students that you can be creative and innovative all the while finding peace and personal satisfaction in your work. It’s not always the end result, but the process that should be cherished,” she added. The Monclova resident isn’t afraid to experiment with paint or to try new things. “When I first came upon chalk paint I had no idea how it would revolutionize the way I create, think and work. Instead of spending hours and hours scraping off old varnish and paint and sanding a piece clean, I could take the chalk paint and apply it to a clean and dry surface. “Most of my friends are young moms or moms of teens/college kids. Consequently, they don’t have a ton of money to spend on high end new furniture. It’s not unusual for them to commission me to take one of their old dressers or chairs and reimagine them into new-to-you pieces. Soon, they have a new living room or bedroom filled with my funky style! Warren started Funky Junk by Janette two years ago as an exhibit booth at Consign It Interiors. She’s the owner of three (and sometimes four) separate booths, each with a different vibe representative of furniture she’s selling.

Consign-It Home pride Consign-It Home Interiors, 6935 Central Ave., has been in business for 22 years. Tony Rasczyk has been the store’s general manager. from the very beginning. Tony is the “face of the store and chief consigner.” “We sell all kinds of furniture styles - retro, shabby chic, unique, mid-century, farmhouse, rustic and antique,” Rasczyk said. “We are an upscale resale Tony Rasczyk, Consign-It shop that sells pre-owned furniture and General Manager accessories. And twenty percent of our products are brand new items. “We have new items coming in every day. So, our inventory is constantly changing. One of our points of pride is our ‘mall for the home’ section of the store. We have 38 vendors who present new, used, refurbished and upcycled furniture and accessories for the home. Again, there is a range in style and taste level among our vendors, each of whom have been carefully handpicked for inclusion into the store. “Every day Consign-It is open, these small vendor shops are open too. That’s the beauty of being tied into our mall for the home! These small business owners don’t have to be here to sell something. We do the selling for them for a small rental fee. This works out great for the person who still works full-time but wants to test the waters on what having a retail business is like. For more information on renting a space or shopping at Consign-It Home Interiors call Tony at 419-841-4663. See their latest inventory on Facebook and Instagram.

Know the law

Medical marijuana is now available in Ohio Adapted from an article by the Ohio State Bar Association Printed with permission Signed into law on June 8, 2016 by former Governor John Kasich, Ohio’s medical marijuana law became operational in January 2019. But what does the law mean for Ohio employers, job applicants and employees? First, Ohio’s law does not legalize marijuana for recreational use. The legalized medical use of marijuana is limited to patients with a specified number of medical conditions. Ohio has established registration requirements for medical marijuana patients and caregivers. Ohio’s medical marijuana law allows patients diagnosed with one or more of approximately 20 qualifying medical conditions (including HIV/AIDS, epilepsy, cancer, PTSD, etc.) to purchase and use medical marijuana only if they are properly registered with the State of Ohio and who possess an Ohio-issued patient or caregiver identification card. Ohio permits registered patients to use medical marijuana via oils, tinctures or extracts, plant material, edibles (food containing THC) and patches. Vaporization of medical marijuana also is permitted but smoking and other combustion of medical marijuana are not allowed. Medical marijuana products must be dispensed by a retailer licensed by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy.

Marijuana and federal law

While Ohio and over 30 other states have legalized the possession and use of marijuana for certain medical conditions, marijuana remains a “Schedule I” controlled substance under the Federal Controlled Substance Act.

20

www.mlivingnews.com

It remains illegal for physicians to “prescribe” marijuana and can only “recommend” its use. Ohioans who use medical marijuana are violating federal criminal law, consequences for which include possible fines and imprisonment. Continuing a stance taken by the Obama Administration, the federal government has purposely avoided enforcing these types of “low level” violations as the legalized marijuana movement has unfolded at the state level.

In the workplace

Ohio’s medical marijuana law does not require employers to accommodate job applicants’ or employees’ use, possession, distribution, being under the influence of or testing positive for medical marijuana. Ohio employers can discharge, discipline, refuse to hire or take any other disciplinary action against an applicant or employee because of those circumstances. For Ohio employers who maintain a zero-tolerance policy, medical marijuana users will either choose to not use medical marijuana or to work elsewhere. However, as Ohio employers begin to see more applicants and employees who are lawfully using medical marijuana, some employers may decide, as a practical business matter, to make an exception for specific off-the-job and off-premises use of medical marijuana. Ohio’s law does provide that flexibility for employers. As the application of the law, and experience with its operation, continue across the state, changes may be made to modify its provisions and to reflect what is learned by both law enforcement and medical professionals. This article is intended to provide broad, general information about the law. This article is not intended as legal advice.

Keeping Traditions Alive in the Point

Golden City offers four decades of experience serving Chinese cuisine By Erin Holden Golden City, A Point Place treasure, in operation since 1965, has been owned by four generations of the Wong family. Jimmy Wong took over operations four years ago after his aunt’s retirement, and he has 30 years of memories from working in the restaurant. Wong proudly showed us the original menu — early patrons might remember that the establishment was called The Lighthouse Inn before

Courtney Probert

Dini ng out

storm winds demolished the iconic lighthouse mounted on the roof in the 80s. Looking at the prices, then realizing that the decor for the restaurant and bar is still very mid century, made us feel like we had stepped back in time. In addition to the decor and archived restaurant memorabilia, Golden City honors their roots in other ways

Tso much chicken

“A lot of customers like the old style of almond boneless chicken we prepare,” says Wong. “Not many restaurants do the traditional gravy and chop suey we serve.” He says the chicken has a batter that is different than most, with a gravy that is darker and thicker than that prepared at other Chinese restaurants. The gravy for the almond boneless chicken is very thick and rich— quite a bit different than this classic dish tried in other establishments. The chicken is battered with a crunchiness, then smothered in brown gravy and served on a bed of shredded lettuce and white rice with an eggroll on the side. It’s easy to see why this is one of their most popular dishes. Another favorite dish, General Tso’s chicken, is fried and coated in a sweet sauce that fans of honey chicken will appreciate. It also had a spiciness to it that both delighted and surprised us.

Golden City is known for their traditional Almond Boneless gravy, which is thicker than the lighter sauce you’ll find at other Chinese restaurants.

Pleased with the food, I will certainly come back to have a drink or two at their bar, a throwback to the slightly kitschy 60s motif that I’ve always been partial to. Golden City already has a loyal following from Point Place residents and neighboring Michiganders; with decades of stellar service and traditional Chinese cuisine, the restaurant has withstood the test of time.

Sides and sauces

Our dinner came with tea to sip during the short wait for our food, and we opted for fried wontons as well. The sauce at the table was ideal for dipping egg rolls and wontons — a sweet, mildly fruity mixture that balanced the savory appetizers. The dinners included soup, and we chose a hearty wonton soup and a chicken and rice soup, both of which were quite tasty. New items diners can look forward to for summer include a vegetable spring roll and a mango roll for dessert.

Open 11:30am-9:30pm, Monday through Thursday. 11:30am-10:30pm, Friday and Saturday; 4-9pm on Sunday. Golden City, 5051 N. Summit St., 419-726-8221. goldencitychinese.weebly.com

Senior discounts offered at area courses By Amy Campbell The summer is on par for getting out and enjoying some golf. Area golf courses are the perfect place to be, whether you’re a newbie to the sport or a scratch golfer. Seniors have an advantage, too, with discounts and specials available across the area and around the country, according to Nick Szymanski of the South Toledo Golf Club. “Every golf course in the country offers senior discounts,” he said. “Augusta National might not, but everyone else has some kind of senior discount at some time of the day.”
