Old West End Association Mission Statement

Objectives of the Old West End Association are:

A. Create and maintain a community atmosphere that encourage a harmonious neighborhood that celebrates diversity and inclusion and stands against racism and all other forms of discrimination;

B.Improve and maintain the safety and security of Old West End residents and property;

C. Improve and maintain the quality and equality of education for children residing in the Old West End;

D. Improve and maintain the dissemination of accurate information about the Old West End, its property, and its spirit as a neighborhood community;

E. Preserve the historic and aesthetic qualities of property located in the Old West End;

F. Provide a means for people to meet and nurture friendships;

G. Coordinate any areas of neighborhood concerns with other neighborhood groups and organizations; and

H. Address any other areas The OWEA deems to be of interest or service to the residents of the Old West End.

The Old West End Association consists of these 6 committees:

ARBORETUM – The Agnes Reynolds Jackson Arboretum, established in 1986, is a serene two-acre park located at the corner of Robinwood and Delaware Avenues.

The former site of St. Luke’s Hospital, the park was named in memory of Agnes (Aggie) Reynolds Jackson recognizing her devotion and hard work for the Old West End. This park is maintained by volunteer neighbors with over 60 varieties of trees, shrubs and flowering bushes. Workdays are once a month from spring through fall with dates posted on the website and in the park. Events include Music in the Park concerts performed throughout the summer, the Fall Marketplace and other seasonal events.

BUSINESS/NETWORKING – The Business Networking Committee seeks to promote and support business owners or individuals interested in owning or developing businesses within the boundaries of the Old West End. The group meets to share information and discuss any issues of interest to its members.

EDUCATION & SCHOLARSHIP – OWEA Education Scholarship Committee focuses on the educational advancement and support of our neighborhood students and local schools. We award a scholarship yearly to an individual furthering their post-high school education.

NBI - Neighborhood Beautification and Improvement

Grant – The NBI Grant program committee oversees and makes recommendations to the Executive Board for expenditures from the Neighborhood Beautification and Improvement Fund. This grant is not for improvements on private property or residences but instead for public areas and buildings. The committee establishes parameters for accountability, oversight and reporting to the OWEA on progress. To apply for a grant, please refer to the OWEA website for more information.

O.W.E. FESTIVAL - The Old West End Association is responsible for planning and funding the annual Old West End Festival, which is held the first full weekend in June. It includes Historic Home Tours, Art Fair, Marketplace, Food Concessions, Entertainment on two stages, the King Wamba Carnival Parade, Children’s Activities, many garage sales and much more. It takes over 350 volunteers to put on the festival. Festival is an easy and great way to meet neighbors while helping the neighborhood! Funds raised during the festival are reinvested into the neighborhood.

PRESERVATION – The purpose of the Preservation Committee is to engage in focused activities designed to preserve the historic and aesthetic qualities of the Old West End. The committee undertakes salvage efforts, conducts educational sessions and works with homeowners to identify resources to help them with preservation efforts. It also strives to identify at-risk properties to prevent them from falling into disrepair during periods of vacancy.

The parade starts at 10 am at Robinwood at Collins St. (Glenwood Elementary School). Featuring a new route around the Arboretum this year, see map on page 6.

This eclectic convergence of art, music, street theatre and visual wonder will proceed south through the Old West End (Robinwood, Bancroft,Collingwood) ending at Collingwood at Woodruff St. (Art Fair/Marketplace).

The coronation of King Wamba & Queen Sancha will take place on the steps of the Toledo Museum of Art.

Devilbiss-Davis Home

AThis Neoclassical Mansion was built in 1902 for Willard E. Allen, a manufacturer of bath appliances. Thomas A. DeVilbiss and his family purchased and lived here from 1916 to 1932. The imposing front entrance greets the visitor to this 7200 sq. ft. home. The interior of the home is appointed with detailed woodwork, leaded glass, Tiffany-stained glass, barrel-vaulted ceilings and original Waterford lighting fixtures. Magnificent parlors, seven bedrooms, eight baths, seven fireplaces, solarium and a third-floor ballroom all add to make this a spectacular part of Toledo area history.

Bolles-Stone-Gaynor Home

The Bolles-Stone-Gaynor Home was built in 1910. This 4100 square foot Dutch Colonial was designed by well-known architect Harry Wachter for William and Dorothy (Bonner) Bolles. The home blends the owner’s eclectic style with the old and the new with Maxfield Parrish prints, Labino art glass and a celebration of the 50th year of the festival. Original to the home is a log cabin room built with cedars from the Scott High School campus with a stone fireplace. Bolles founded Troop 3 of the Boy Scouts of America where scouts met.

The Edward Ford Home was designed by architect George S Mills. This home has extensive use of terracotta for exterior embellishments in the Italian Renaissance style. The interior has intricate flame mahogany panels and columns in the central hallway, main staircase and in the beautiful oval dining room. There are also nine bedrooms and eight fireplaces.

EJ.F.Grosswiller-Malenda Home

R.J.Wheeler-J.F.Grosswiller-Malenda Home is a unique brick English bungalow home built by Mills, Rhines, Bellman and Nordhoff architects of Toledo. This home has opened its doors for the first time to the festival. Transformed into a doctor’s practice in the 1970s, the house has been meticulously restored to showcase original features from 1917, making it a stunning tour home.

GLOW ROLL MAP

The Old West End 5K kicks off Sunday morning of festival weekend on Sunday morning. Everyone starts and finishes this certified 5K race with the world-famous Toledo Museum of Art as your backdrop. The run/walk has grown each year in popularity with the regional running community. The 5K winds its way through the historic tree-lined streets of Toledo’s Old West End. Enjoy the run, enjoy the neighborhood and enjoy the festival after the race is over.

Registration begins at 7:30 am. 5K Race/Walk begins at 9:00 am, rain or shine.

Free parking available in the Toledo Museum of Art. Lot is located at Oakwood Ave. off Collingwood close to the UT Center for the Visual Arts (east end of the main museum complex).

This year's kick-off to festival will feature a lighted Bike and Golf Cart Glow Roll. To participate, meet at 2443 Collingwood Blvd. at 7:30 pm for light refreshments, and then at 8:30 pm, proceed throughout the Old West End neighborhood.

To watch, see the route map. Off-street parking is available for participants, and you need to sign a Liability Waiver provided at the event and is also available on the website.

USATF certified (OH 04017 PR) paved and fast, electronic timing, splits at 1- and 2-miles.

The Preservation Committee of the Old West End Association is bringing back the Pancake Breakfast this year for the Festival. Sunday, June 4, 8am to 12 noon. It will take place at 2492 Scottwood at Delaware. It will support the ongoing objectives of protecting our historic homes, such as tarps for roofs, mowing of lawns, and the 624 Delaware Project House.
