KIDS HOROSCOPE March 21April 19

By Kimmie Rose Your lovable little Taurus is sensitive regarding emotions, the environment and with the way things feel on their skin. Taurus rules the five senses, so when they are hungry, tired, or ready to play... they will let you know. This month, your kid will look for extra nurturing as feelings of insecurity arise in them. Give them a little extra TLC this month so they can lift that veil of confusion hanging over them. Keep a soft blanket around so they can fall into a cozy nap or create a safe place by draping it over a table to make a tent to hide in, or cuddle with them. Let them know you need their nice warm, lovable, presence to calm you! If you are cold your child always produces warm energy from their body so it’s a win, win. This month, snuggle time and quiet time will benefit your little bull!

RAISING PEACEFUL CHILDREN “Let It Begin with Me” “Let There Be Peace on Earth” is a song written by Jill JacksonMiller and Sy Miller in 1955 for a children’s choir. Today, children and adults world-wide embrace and perform the song in many contexts. Its message is universal; each individual has the power to create peace and harmony within him or herself. Modeling peaceful behavior for children, listening deeply, discussing fairly, demonstrating empathy are possible when parents are able to step outside their own fears and prejudices and put themselves in the other’s shoes. It is the only effective way to teach peace. Children know instinctively when parents’ directives to “be nice” are not in sync with argumentative, closed-minded behavior observed in the adults around them. Instead, they internalize conflict as the way to approach life.

PERSPECTIVES ON PARENTING ADVERTORIAL

When parents openly discuss age-appropriate issues and options they respect their children’s intelligence and encourage their thoughtful behavior. And, equally important, when parents admit their mistakes to children it demonstrates that we all fail at perfection although we strive to be good people. In the end, emerging young adults choose to accept or reject their parents’ values and beliefs. The most powerful tool parents can give their children in today’s confrontational and polarized world is the confidence to trust their own judgement, make good decisions, and build healthy relationships. Our children are our hope for the future. They will be hopeful, empowered to create a more peaceful world if we demonstrate it is possible in our own lives. “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”

All Aboard! National Train Day is back for the 11th consecutive year and what better place to celebrate all things railway than at Toledo’s Amtrak Station. Highlights of the event include trackside displays, model train exhibits, food vendors and local business displays. The event is free and, with kids activities, fun for the whole family. 9:30-4. Saturday, May 5. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza, 415 Emerald Ave. facebook.com/NationalTrainDayToledo

Stay afloat Poolside fun makes hot weather tolerable, but the fear of a child drowning can overwhelm parents. Make sure your child, ages 6 months to 6 years, has the knowledge and protection they need through Gr8 Lakes Swim Babies, an Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) serving NW Ohio and beyond. Children can learn self-rescue swimming techniques by Kym Smith Cragel and Annette Lazenby, certified ISR instructors.

Queen bee A Toledoan was named as an Ohio semifinalist for the 2018 Ohio National Geographic State Bee. Sarah Boellner, 8th grader at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School, was one of only 100 Ohio fourth through eighth graders chosen by the National Geographic Society to compete in their annual spelling bee. Boellner earned her title through a school spelling bee, held throughout the state to determine each school champion, and a qualifying test which was submitted to the National Geographic Society.

Sensory Sensitive Sundays Kids love venues like Chuck E. Cheese’s, but children with autism or other special needs can find the chaotic environment difficult. With support from the Center for Autism Related Disorders (CARD), Chuck E. Cheese’s will offer Sensory Sensitive Sundays on the first Sunday of each month. Children can enjoy an atmosphere with reduced light and noise, food and games, and a trained and caring staff two hours before the restaurant and arcade would typically open. 9-11am. Summer reading Far too often, skills are softened, not sharpened, during summer break. Let this summer be a chance for your child to enhance their phonic, fluency, reading comprehension, textbook, and speed reading skills during the Case Western Reserve University Summer Reading Skills Program, offered in Perrysburg and Toledo. A variety of programs, led by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development, will offer oncea-week classes to students age 4 through those entering 11th grade. Tuition, location, and program varies by age, but sessions will be held in June and July. For more information or to register, call 1-800-978-9596 or visit case.readingprograms.org.

Educational clips by young students Sylvania Community Action Team (SCAT) encouraged middle schoolers and high schoolers last month to create a 30-60 second video about the dangers of underage drinking in their Youth Video Contest “Underage Drinking - Not a MInor Problem.” Participants could either work individually or with a group to create their videos. The students’ works will be showcased during the screening on May 2 and ranked 1st-3rd place by judges in the two categories of High School (9th-12th grade) and Middle School (6th-8th grade). One selection will be crowned the Audience Choice award in addition to the original two categories. 7pm. Main library renovation

After 20 years without any major renovations, the Toledo Lucas County Main Library downtown is getting a major uplift this year. To better serve the community, key features of the renovation include relocating the cafe, gallery and gift shop, technology updates, creating new spaces to foster cultural, educational and economic development and expanding multi-function space. The library will host three forums — May 2nd, 30th, and June 28th — at the Main Library’s McMaster Center to gather community input regarding the entity’s space, collections, and services. Renovation work is slated to last one year, beginning after Labor Day and ending in September 2019. During the renovation work, the downtown library will be closed. Main Library, 325 Michigan St. 419-259-5200, toledolibrary.org.

Lucas County’s newest park, Howard Marsh Metropark, opened at the end of April. Previously a working farm, the park property was purchased by the Metroparks with two partners, The Ohio Division of Wildlife and the Clean Ohio Fund, in 2008 for $6 million. EXCEPTIONAL FAMILIES for parents of children with special needs

An Advocate for Kids Family Voices of Ohio focuses the health care conversation By Kate Ingersoll

Parents and families with children who have disabilities or special needs, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, have had access to services in our community since 1992 with Family Voices. Acting on behalf of children with disabilities and chronic conditions to allow them to thrive alongside their friends in neighborhoods and classrooms across our state, the organization works with school boards, parent/ teacher associations, and educators to pave the way for inclusion practices in public schools. Advocating culturally accurate assistance Family Voices’ cornerstone value is to provide cultural and linguistically accurate assistance, thereby ensuring that all children with special needs receive the individual help they need. Based on a family-centered approach, Family Voices demonstrates that “the family is a child’s

most consistent health care provider.” The services they offer are available at home or in the hospital, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Specialized health care Family Voices of Ohio aims to assure high-quality, affordable, and familybased health care to all children by assisting families with accessing appropriate screening and diagnosis, particularly for children with unique challenges while working in partnership with health insurers. Locally, Family Voices of Ohio is a trusted resource on health care and connects families with a host of support so they can have the tools to make informed decisions for their child’s care and education. Children with special needs include everyone who has or is at risk for developing long-term physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional challenges.

In Northwest Ohio, families have access to organizations that can provide information about autism, celiac disease, Down syndrome, epilepsy, cystic fibrosis, and a host of other conditions. The Family-to-Family Health Information Center is especially supportive with assisting parents in navigating health care for their child. The Center provides free, confidential information for families with access to a wide variety of services, including The Ability Center of Greater Toledo, The March of Dimes, Bright Horizons Advocacy and Consulting, as well as connections to both Mercy and Toledo Children’s Hospitals.

Family members as advocates Family Voices allocates most of its funding to leadership training, where parents first advocate support for their own child, then expand their focus to assisting other families. Family Voices is indebted to the countless family leaders from a variety of cultural communities who actively strive to change the landscape for children who have special needs, continuing the entity’s goal to establish community-based partnerships between families and professionals. Parents are encouraged to visit Family Voices of Ohio’s website (www.familyvoicesohio.org) and contact Patty Dovell who can connect them with specific resources that will benefit their child.

On a roll As part of their Social Living Club (SLC), Bittersweet Inc. is partnering with Bowlero Lanes (4398 Monroe St.) for a six week bowling league for teens with autism. Teens will learn bowling basics, including sportsmanship, conversational skills, and social skills. Community Outreach Specialist Taylor Barndt says, “Bowling is a wonderful community activity that helps develop social skills among teens with autism. Bowling is great for developing patience, sportsmanship, and gross motor skills. We are excited to offer this opportunity to the participants in the Social Living Club.” The class will be held from 6-7pm on Tuesday evenings, beginning on May 8. $35. Scholarship opportunities are available. For more information, contact Taylor Barndt at 419-206-7803 or tbarndt@bittersweetfarms.org.

Get a kick From learning decision making skills, enhancing physical literacy, to understanding good sportsmanship, soccer is one of the best sports for kids— but it’s not typically accessible to all. Fortunately, a local program called TOPSoccer offers young athletes with cognitive, physical and/or emotional challenges the chance to play. Athletes ages five years and older can register to join in on this educational and fun athletic activity TOPSoccer’s next event will be held from 2-3pm on Sunday, May 6 at the Maumee Soccer Center. BIRTHDAY GUIDE Local birthday celebrations for any budget Simple, special, and milestone festivities

House party

By Erin Marsh

Social media, often a place that provides information and advice for new parents, can also beguile parents into thinking that each year a birthday must be met with an extravaganza. We compiled a list of simple, special, and milestone birthday parties along with what parents had to say.

For most of us parents, this was the classic way to celebrate a birthday. Pick a theme (or not), decorate accordingly, and plan activities. House parties can be extravagant or down-to-earth, depending on how motivated you are, but they also can require a lot of work and patience. To come up with ideas, visit Pinterest for a wealth of information to plan the birthday of your child’s dreams.

KEEP IT SIMPLE! Family birthday meal

Visit your child’s favorite restaurant for a meal with the family. Most kidfriendly places offer a special birthday option, whether a free dessert or a pack of singing waiters.

SUMMER BIRTHDAYS

If your child’s birthday arrives during one of our warm months, options abound for keeping it simple while entertaining. If you have access to a pool, swim parties are guaranteed hits during summer months. Another option: take the family to a zoo. Both the Toledo Zoo and the smaller Indian Creek Zoo, just over the border in Lambertville, offer a great time.

Sleepover

Sleepovers, a budget-friendly but exhausting option, provide unforgettable memories. Order a pizza, pick up a storebought cake, rent your child’s favorite movie, plan an activity, and for the rest of the evening, the kids are in charge— for better or for worse. Andrea Brown, mom of 4 girls, celebrated twice with sleepovers. For daughter Makayla’s 9th birthday, they invited 10 friends: “[It was a night of] 4 AM wake-ups and no sleep for mom. Some girls made up stories to scare each other for fun, but a few girls became nervous that they and went home. The house was totally trashed, BUT there was much bonding, crazy fun, laughter, and wild memories that will last a lifetime!”

This party was the perfect amount of energy for a good price.”

Democracy in Action TPS’ Grove Patterson Academy parents encourage school walkout By Erin Marsh

After the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, students around the country joined together to organize a national school walkout. While the protests were geared toward high school students, many parents felt younger children could also benefit from experiencing social activism. Why walk out? Heather Meyer, mother of Ella, a third grade student at Grove Patterson, summed it up succinctly: “I kept coming back to the fact that if they’re old enough to (participate in) lockdown training and old enough to be shot at, then they’re old enough to walk out.”

“Sometimes parents have to advocate for kids to give them opportunities,” continued Meyer. “We needed to organize something so that [these kids] knew we had their backs.” Melissa Gregory, whose son Rufus is a classmate of Ella’s at Grove Patterson, added, “I felt like the walkout was really an important opportunity to teach our kids as politically engaged citizens. Being young doesn’t mean that you can’t make a difference.” “I wanted them to think of themselves as responsible for making change and having the power to make change happen,” Gregory continued. “When you get together with friends, you can instigate change. Don’t just sit back and hope for the best; you have to get out there and make things happen.” Parents advocating for change Meyer and Gregory emailed TPS Superintendent Dr. Romules Durant and their children’s teachers to request their support for an elementary walkout. Gregory says, “I felt fortunate that they were behind this as an idea and that they are concerned about student safety and keeping an eye on everyone, especially littler kids. They all saw this as a teachable moment.”

Q&A with

Heather Meyer (above) & Melissa Gregory (below) Favorite family activity? MG: The whole family enjoys vegging out around the house and watching a movie. I enjoy dragging them to the Art Museum. HM: Going to the Art Museum. Favorite solo activity? MG: Ashtanga Yoga. Doing the thing that helps my body (and makes me taller). HM: My Nikon camera. Your life, in five words or less: MG: Sleep deprived, but worth it! HM: Involved, exhausting, humorous, artistic. Favorite Toledo hangout? MG: The TMA and Old Orchard. HM: If I’m “adulting,” it’s The Attic. Describe Toledo in a sentence? MG: Toledo has the most heart and community pride of any city that I’ve ever lived in. The national 17-minute walkout--one minute for each of the 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas--had a list of three demands: ban assault weapons, require universal background checks before gun sales, and pass a gun violence restraining order law that would allow courts to disarm people who display warning signs of violent behavior. Grove Patterson walkout The elementary-aged children at Grove Patterson Academy held signs and shared a moment of silence. Some parents advocated a “walk-up,” where children reach out with kindness to others who may be sitting alone at lunch or by themselves in the classroom, instead of a “walkout,” but Gregory countered, “Kindness and political protest are not mutually exclusive. I think [a walk-up instead of a walkout

Best childhood holiday memory? MG: My grandmother would do the big Polish Christmas Eve dinner called Wigilia. I have her recipes and make her pierogis every year. is sending the message that kids have the burden of being nicer. That’s not the message I want for my kids.” She continued, explaining, “These kids were attempting to make themselves visible and stand up for their own safety; don’t substitute that with a kindness activity. Kindness activities can happen everyday.” Gregory, an English professor at the University of Toledo, enjoys teaching “about the human experience” and hopes to make future generations more engaged and more empathetic. Meyer holds two part-time positions. She has been the office manager at Inside Out, a home recreation supply and service business, for 19 years, and she recently became the Community Outreach Coordinator at Trinity Episcopal Church downtown.

With a rare free Saturday, the kids and I recently tried out a new place for lunch. Well, new ONLY to us. Diner in name only Right or wrong, I have usually equated “diner” with “greasy spoon” and, perhaps, not the best well-kept place. I mean that in the most endearing way. Greasy spoon, a colloquial term, refers to an establishment that is usually inexpensive and generally offers fried food, burgers, chili and other “comfort” foods. I LOVE a great diner when that’s what I’m in the mood for. Given that understanding, we were quite surprised when we stepped into Rick’s City Diner. It wasn’t what we had expected from a “diner.” After enjoying our dining experience and talking with owner Rick Salem, he explained it is a “diner” in name only. Now everything made sense. Warning: You could become a regular Basically, just put the idea of anything close to a typical diner out of your mind. Yes, there is a long dining counter with high chairs that you would expect at most diners, but that is all the “diner”

The Short Course:

Kid-friendly: Yes. To avoid wait: Anytime, but weekend mornings can get busy. Noise Level: Moderate. Bathroom amenities: Changing station. High chairs? Yes. Got milk? Yes as well as a variety of juice. Kids’ menu? Yes; breakfast and lunch options. Allergy info: It is difficult to prevent cross contamination as they only have one grill. However, they do not use any peanut oil and gluten free bread is available.

you will find in this restaurant. Especially on a sunny day, you will love all the windows. The dining area is very open and bright with a fireplace and partial wall in the middle that serves as a divider between two sides of the restaurant. “It’s a hangout. It’s a place where you always see people you know,” said Salem. And true to that statement we did notice a couple guests who ran into friends as well, and the waitress knew the regulars sitting behind us. “I wanted something locally owned,” said Salem who had no interest in opening a franchise. His first restaurant opened in 1986 and with each move to a new location he would “go back to school,” per say, as he traveled the country and spent time with mentors always honing his craft and his concept, always wondering how he can improve upon it.

Mr. Salem said he uses natural foods; everything is fresh and nothing is frozen. His menu includes a note to patrons promising only the highest quality, finest meats, never powdered or liquid eggs (eeks…didn’t realize some places do that!), homemade pancake, waffle and French toast batter, etc. His Albacore tuna doesn’t come cheap, nor does his coffee, but if you appreciate good food, you will notice the difference with everything you try. Kids have a menu, but they’ll want yours For kids 10 and under there is a breakfast and lunch menu with typical options such as grilled cheese, hot dogs, chocolate chip pancakes, etc. with prices ranging from $3.79 to $5.99 including a side and beverage. The adult menu is expansive with options including sandwiches, salads, specialty breakfast items, omelets, French toast which may make your children jealous. According to Salem, the majority of kids order off the regular menu. My youngest went for the homemade chocolate chip pancakes with a couple eggs while the rest of us enjoyed lunch options. However, Salem said they are probably best known for their seven different Eggs Benedict options. I already know I am going back for the Crab Cake Benedict for $12.99. At Rick’s you know you are getting what you pay for, and more.

I enjoyed their homemade chicken salad served open face on a English Muffin topped with melted Gruyere cheese while my daughter opted for the California melt; a vegetarian option with a portabella mushroom, avocado, tomato and melted Swiss. My oldest son somehow devoured the fried egg BLT with avocado and fresh cut fries. It must have had a pound of bacon. He unsuccessfully tried to hoard his bacon, as I was sure we all got a taste, or two or three. Short story about Rick’s, we can’t wait to return.

Bottom Line:

Rick’s City Diner is a “diner” only in name. The attention to freshness and quality is evident in every bite. Portions are generous and the staff is pleasant. You’ll enjoy the casual, family friendly atmosphere and, though they have a kids’ menu, your younger ones may be tempted to order something off the regular menu instead.
