Traversing Toledo by bike — or roller skates

It’s open road season and nothing beats a motorcycle ride on a sunny spring day.

If you’ve always wanted to learn to ride, or just want to hone your skills, then register for the Motorcycle Ohio Education Classes. The beginner to advanced sessions range from six to 16 hours and happen statewide April through October. For beginners in particular, “the classes are an excellent way to learn in a safe, low-stress environment with the added benefit of highly skilled instructors,” says long-time teacher Vickey Johnson.

Beginners are supplied with a motorcycle and helmet. Once a person successfully completes the class, they’re endorsed by the program and can then get their license through the Ohio BMV. For info, registration, fees, and locations go to motorcycle.ohio.gov. Johnson emphasizes the best safety rule for everyone “is to know your limits and ride in your comfort zone. For instance, if you get nervous in heavy traffic, avoid rush hour.”

Peeling the onion

Something stinks at the Board of Elections

By Johnny Hildo Here’s the top of the news over at the Lucas County Board of Elections. The office has been so dysfunctional that two consultants appointed by the office of the Ohio Secretary of State John Husted recommended the removal of the top two employees, Republican Director Meghan Gallagher and Democratic Deputy Director Dan DeAngelis. Current members of the Board have refused to follow the recs, including the chairmen of their respective parties, Republican Jon Stainbrook and Democrat Ron Rothenbuhler. The other GOP member, Tony DeGidio, once represented Gallagher as her attorney and this potential conflict precludes him from voting, leaving Democratic member John Irish as the sole vote for removal. Plus Stainbrook has alleged that DeGidio only stays in Toledo occasionally and actually lives in Youngstown, and so should be removed from the Board altogether. At a recent meeting, Stainbrook associate Kelly Bensman made the same allegation.

Simple, huh? Wait ‘til you hear the seamy underbelly of this rotten mess.

With friends like these…

Peel back layer one. Of course DeGidio has represented Gallagher. He has been Stainbrook’s attorney, too, and Stainbrook and Gallagher are closest of close friends, with some sources even suggesting a romantic liaison, which they deny. In fact, Stainbrook led the charge to remove former GOP Board members Patrick Kriner and Benjamin Marsh to pave the way for his own appointment to the Board along with his good friend DeGidio, which could in turn lead to the appointment of his besty Gallagher as director.

Layer two. That takes us back to 2011, when Husted issued a directive demanding the firing of then-Director Democrat Linda Howe and then-Deputy Republican Jeremy Demagall. The directive stemmed from allegations of mishandling provisional ballots in the 2010 election of Democrat Carol Contrada to her seat as Lucas County Commissioner over GOP choice George Sarantou. Sarantou’s seeming victory on Election Day was reversed after provisional ballots were counted.

The 2011 Board, including Rothenbuhler, Kriner, and Democrat Rita Clark, voted unanimously for the removal of Howe and Demagall. Nary a peep of dissent. Marsh announced his resignation that day, opening the way for the appointment of Stainbrook. Stainbrook had wanted the position in 2010, but was blocked by a party faction led by Jeff Simpson, former candidate for Toledo City Council District Two. DeGidio joined Stainbrook on the Board later in 2011.

Layer three. Fast backward to 2010, the year Stainbrook was re-elected to a second term as Chairman of the Lucas County GOP. It was a contentious battle,

so potentially volatile that then-chair of the state GOP Kevin DeWine chaired the meeting. The battle was in part fought over Stainbrook’s attacks on party leadership, including the likes of Kriner and Demagall. His opposition for party chair?

Curiouser and curiouser

Layer four. The question of residency takes us back to 2007, and the District Two candidacy of Joe Kidd, backed by Stainbrook, then less than a year away from his takeover of the local GOP. Kidd was allegedly spending much of his time at an apartment in the Detroit area, where he had supposedly fled after a falling out with the LC GOP. He and Stainbrook were also allegedly working on a book together, and Kidd was recently divorced and undergoing financial issues, so he would spend considerable time in Toledo. His stated residence in District Two, where he crashed on a couch in the basement, was on Fullington Road, the house of mutual friend Kelly Bensman. Yes, the same one. See above.

The endorsed Republican for District Two, who filed the challenge to residency, was Jeff Simpson. The Board of Elections, led

by Republican Jill Kelly, sided with Kidd, stating the Board’s job is not to keep him off the ballot but to get him on. Kelly is the mother of current candidate for Toledo Mayor, Democrat Joe McNamara.

Layer five. The book on which Kidd and Stainbrook were supposedly collaborating was a depiction of the downfall of the GOP empire built by coin dealer Tom Noe. Kidd was the Party’s Executive Director while Noe was Chair in the 1990s, and had been close enough to Noe to be one of those accused as a conduit for illegally funneling large amounts of cash to the re-election campaign of former President George W. Bush in 2003. Kidd’s job at the time? Director of the Lucas County Board of Elections.

In early 2004 Kidd entered into public jousting with GOP candidate for Congress against Rep. Marcy Kaptur, Larry Kaczala. Soon thereafter, Noe’s wife Bernadette asked for Kidd’s immediate resignation, which he refused. Mrs. Noe made criminal allegations about Kidd’s conduct as Elections Director, after which Kidd reported the money laundering scheme to Lucas County prosecutors. Kidd was granted immunity in exchange for testimony, leading to Mr. Noe’s eventual conviction and prison sentence in 2006.

Layer six takes us back to 1998, when Jon Stainbrook served as an assistant in the LC Auditor’s office. He decided to run against his boss for Auditor, alleging corruption in what became a dirty, mudslinging campaign. Stainbrook lost, and his boss continued as Auditor until his defeat at the hands of the other current Democratic mayoral candidate, Anita Lopez, in 2006. Stainbrook’s boss in 1998?

Neapolitan pies at the new Fifth Street Pub

By Alia Orra Geoff Kies and Bruce Rahe endured a nine-hour drive, sore shoulders, Hurricane Sandy — even their own tears — to learn the art of Neapolitan pizza. The Toledo restaurateur and his chef woke up at the crack of dawn, were haggled by New York City cab drivers, and forced to walk for 53 blocks.

Their new life as self-described “pizza slaves” can be traced back to a slice from a hole-in-the-wall called Bono Pizza in the back of a Columbus, Ohio carryout.

“It’s the weirdest place in the world, but it was also the only authentic Italian pizza place in Ohio as far as I was concerned,” says Kies. “I was so blown away by how it tasted I came back to Bruce and said ‘This is what we gotta do [in Toledo]. We have to do this Neapolitan-style pizza.’”

The tao of Italian pie

They sought out the only man they knew of who could instruct them in the tao of Italian pie, Roberto Caporuscio. The Italy native and maestro of Neapolitan pizza is at the helm of the Associazione of Pizza Napoletani (APN, the Association of Neapolitan Pizza Makers) and the revered NYC spot Keste Pizza & Vino. Kies, a German-American, as it happens, wanted the blessing of the Italians. So he spent more than a month trying to convince Caporuscio over the phone to accept him into his two-week training program.

“These people are as serious as a heart attack about Neapolitan pizza,” Kies says.

Caporuscio eventually relented. After Kies and Rahe completed their two weeks of training, they returned to Northwest Ohio to begin preparations for their own restaurant.

Rahe, who left a career opening franchise restaurant kitchens to join Kies on this pizza adventure, now buzzes around Fifth Street’s kitchen as its head chef. The downtown Perrysburg spot bears a stamp of approval from the APN on its front door.

Kies, a Perrysburg resident, had seen the potential for a pizzeria whenever he drove by the location’s former incarnations as Anneliese’s German American Restaurant and Peppercorns steakhouse.

Now Kies, an animated 43-year-old clad in a baseball cap and North Face hoodie, is embarking on his first true culinary passion project after decades of opening and managing more bar-centric spots. (He was one of the original owners of Jed’s and continues to run Luckies Barn and Grill.)

Contrary to the louder, heavily decorated interiors of those other restaurants, Fifth Street’s hardwood floors, brick walls and metal stools are subtle.

And of course, there are those pizzas.

The soft and chewy pies arrive as flat discs with charred, puffy edges (unlike the typically crispy and border-less American versions of thin crust). They are delivered

to the table dressed with basil leaves, fresh tomato chunks or pieces of prosciutto poking out from under a landscape of fresh mozzarella. Eleven varieties are listed on the menu, from the simple “margherita,” named for an Italian queen, to “la montanara,” a deep-fried crust with fresh smoked mozzarella. The menu’s other offerings include meatballs— beef, spicy pork or pecan veggie — served as part of a sandwich, with pasta or on their own with rich sauces, from creamy mushroom to pesto.

As Fifth Street begins to fill the day’s orders, Kies discusses a cheese import from Italy that’s experienced a temporary hiccup. Rahe has begun punching and pressing dough, pushing the air to the edges, ladling sauce onto the rounds, and placing them into the 900-degree woodburning oven. Though they’re only in their first month of business, they are optimistic, and most importantly, dedicated Neapolitanos. “To me, this is more of an art form than it is food,” Rahe says. “Every one of these pizzas is like a work of art.”

Taste of the Nation is a grazing party on steroids — dozens of the city’s top restaurants convene in a tent so big you might need a map to plan your eating route. The new and old guard of Toledo’s dining scene will be out in full force (everyone from Revolution Grille to Mancy’s Steakhouse), and there will also be an opportunity to try the stand-out modern Italian cuisine of celebrity guest chef Nicholas Stefanelli of D.C. restaurant Bibiana Osteria Enoteca. The event draws hundreds of foodies every year, so although the big day isn’t until Sunday, April 21, invest in tickets now before they sell out.

“Restaurants in Toledo are becoming more innovative,” says Alli McMaster, ticket chair. “It’s never going to be ordinary.”

Debut of a thriller

If you have not heard of Park Chan-wook yet, you will. His award-winning trilogy of revenge movies has made him one of the most famous film directors in his native South Korea. Stoker, his first English-language film, is a psychosexual thriller in the vein of the classic films of Alfred Hitchcock. In the film, India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) has her world turned upside down when her father dies and her mysterious uncle, Charlie (Matthew Goode), begins living with her and her mother (Nicole Kidman). Looking forward: Previewing the Toledo Rep’s 2013-14 season

The Toledo Repertoire Theater may be celebrating 81 years, but it’s far from showing any signs of age. The Rep recently announced its upcoming season and the lively lineup displays an upbeat, sometimes risque joie de vivre. If there is a theme, it is comedy.

The season kicks off with a surprise: Gerard Alessandri's long-running satire Forbidden Broadway's Greatest Hits will run from September 13-22. Forbidden Broadway has been parodying Broadway musicals since 1982—Alessandri re-writes the revue every few years to keep its wit nice and venomous.

After that, the Rep will present Joseph Kesselring’s Arsenic and Old Lace from November 8-17. Arsenic is one of America's quintessential black comedies, revolving around drama critic Mortimer Brewster, who ponders marrying the woman he loves while dealing with his homicidal aunts, the NYPD and other less-ordinary obstacles.

The rep will bring its annual holiday performance of A Christmas Carol to The Valentine once again on December 6th, 7th, and 8th. For the past three years, every Rep production of the Dickens’ classic has been superior to the one before it, so 2013's incarnation should be a treat.

The Rep’s January 2014 offering is another time-tested comedy, Michael Frayn's Noises off.

The screwball meta-comedy chronicles the rehearsals and performances of a dysfunctional comedy troupe from in front of—and behind—the stage. Expect more ridiculous exits and entrances than a Scooby Doo rerun.

Valentine's day weekend 2014 will bring A.R. Gurney's Pulitzer-prize winning drama, Love Letters. The stoic, literary play involves two characters sitting in a room, reading letters aloud to one another and the audience, and in so doing tell their life stories.

For a dose of bittersweet springtime, April 11-20 2014 will bring a rendition of Tennessee Williams's seminal southern gothic, The Glass Menagerie. There is a reason the play has been taught in public schools for decades: the titular menagerie is a poetic metaphor for the delicate and sheltered children of the overbearing matriarch of a well-to-do southern family.

Over Mother's Day weekend, the rep will put on Ken Carney's comic-drama Moonglow. By turns touching and elegiac, Moonglow loosely retells the story of Carney caring for her Alzheimer’safflicted mother.

The 2014 season will close with a presentation of Young Frankenstein, the Musical from June 6-22. Generations of obsession

The great masters of creativity often share one common trait: obsessiveness. The driving force behind so many works of art, it is as much a source of excellence as it is selfdestruction. Moises Kaufman’s 33 Variations is a mature, stark meditation on the power of professional obsessions — both the dangers they pose and the redemption they offer — and provides a theater performance that’s worth the drive to Chelsea, Michigan’s Purple Rose Theatre. Ottawa Hills High School grad Sam Barton’s LeSo Gallery exhibition COMPROMI$ED is coming to an end, but not before one last hurrah — a closing reception on Friday, April 5. Barton’s graphite illustrations dazzle with careful detailing; she lovingly recreates fabric textures, such as the creases in clothing worn by a solemn-but-satirical rendition of Abe Lincoln as kingpin. Her portraits stem from her consuming love of hip-hop culture, and explore the genre’s messages and motives. “The exhibition is a commentary on the integrity of contemporary mainstream hiphop and its relationship to both value and values,” she said. Hop Down to Bowling Green

Downtown Toledo doesn’t have a monopoly on gallery loops. The public is invited to stroll to the participating venues to view art exhibits, watch as artists demonstrate their skills, listen to live music, meet the artists and more. The Wheeler Brothers are like our very own Mumford & Sons, except a bit grittier — and with a better sound.
