Correct assessment of the patient is essential for successful implant therapy. Dr Tucker will present an outline for the assessment of the implant patient, at a systematic, oral and local site level. The various radiographic techniques and imagery will be covered, to give the practitioner a guide to the appropriateness of implant therapy, and the ideal timing of extraction and placement. The surgical aspects of mucosal exposure, implant site osteotomy preparation, fixture insertion, the indications and technique relating to alveolar augmentation and procedure completion with cover screw or healing abutment provision and mucosal flap closure will be reviewed. Mandibular and maxillary site specific issues will be covered including the edentulous mandible and atrophic ridge management, deficient vertical and horizontal bone availability in the maxilla with a review of closed and open sinus lift techniques described. Single and two-stage treatment will be reviewed and long-term management issues that relate to implant type, design and position.

Restorative considerations and retention; direct fixtures Implant dentistry has changed the way we need to think when planning treatment. The restorative assessment criteria for implant cases will be discussed. When are implants more appropriate than conventional bridges? The mechanics of implant prostheses need to be understood to achieve a predictable outcome.
