Forensic Recognising child abuse and family violence BRIEF The detection and reporting of child abuse is one of the more confronting areas of dental practice. Dental practitioners are often poorly equipped to detect and diagnose abuse in patients who present for dental treatment. A high percentage of physical abuse to children will involve injury to the face and oral cavity, and many such cases go unreported. This lecture will describe the various oral manifestations of child abuse, and will offer guidelines on how to differentiate between accidental trauma and abuse.
