INVITATION On behalf of the Dental and Orofacial Special Interest Group of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA) we take great pleasure in inviting you to the 9th Annual Oral Sleep Medicine Course, which will immediately precede Sleep DownUnder 2015, ASA/ASTA’s 27th Annual Scientific Meeting. These events will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, from 19-24 October 2015. Being the peak body in Australia & New Zealand representing clinicians, scientists and researchers in the broad area of Sleep, ASA prides itself in presenting the clinical updates, latest research, and evidence based science to workers in the field of

Sleep Disorders and Sleep Health. The 3-day course is intended for dental professionals interested in the dental aspects of sleep disordered breathing and the clinical management of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. The first day of Sleep DownUnder 2015 will contain sessions with Dental Sleep Medicine content. These will be of interest to experienced clinicians, as well as those who have attended the course. We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be an excellent course in a vibrant city. INVITED GUEST Dr Dennis Bailey, DDS, FAAOP, D-ABDSM

INTRODUCTION The course emphasises the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of sleep disorders with presentations on wide-ranging and comprehensive topics as listed below. The presenters are experienced multidisciplinary practitioners and include sleep medicine physicians, dentists, psychologists, ENT/OMF surgeons, sleep scientists and dental specialists. Attending clinicians will gain a broadening of their knowledge of the dental treatment of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea and snoring through the utilisation of oral appliances. The latest clinical protocols, and guidelines will be reviewed to help clinicians gain confidence in integrating Dental Sleep Medicine into their daily practice. At the conclusion of the course attending dentists will have an understanding of the clinical skills required to work in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine in consultation with qualified medical practitioners. This course is supported by the Australasian Sleep Association whose members are committed to providing further sleep education for the growing field of Dental Sleep Medicine. Participants will receive a certificate on completion of the course which will be recognised as continuing professional development. Numbers are limited, so please register early.

We are delighted that Dr Dennis Bailey has accepted our invitation to contribute to this course and the main ASA/ASTA meeting. Dr. Bailey is a general dentist with a practice limited to the management of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (Snoring and Sleep Apnoea) utilizing oral appliances as well as Temporomandibular Disorders, Orofacial Pain and related headaches. He is a graduate of Indiana University School of Dentistry and completed a General Practice Residency at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He is a past president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (19981999), is the founder and past-chair of the Oral Appliance Section and served on the Standards of Practice Committee for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He frequently lectures both in the US and internationally and has authored numerous articles and chapters on the topic of Sleep Medicine and on the use of Oral Appliances by the dentist for the management of snoring and sleep apnea. In October of 2001, he co-edited the Dental Clinics of North America entitled “Sleep Disorders: Dentistry’ Role”. He is currently a visiting lecturer in the Orofacial Pain Program at UCLA School of Dentistry and is the Director of the Mini-Residency in Sleep Medicine for the Dentist. In December 2010 the textbook he and Dr. Attanasio authored entitled “Dental Management of Sleep Disorders” was released and is available from WileyBlackwell. In addition he was the guest editor for “Dentistry’s Role in Sleep Medicine”, March 2010 edition, in the Sleep Medicine Clinics. In April of 2012 a Dental Clinics of North America text was published that Drs. Bailey and Attanasio co-edited entitled “Sleep Medicine for Dentistry”. Dr. Bailey is currently the Past-President (2013-2014) of the Colorado Sleep Society and is the chair for the Sleep Medicine Committee for the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. He has Diplomate status in the American Board of Orofacial Pain and in the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.
