1.1

Honours and Awards Committee The Honours and Awards Committee composition and duties are defined in By Law 6.

Presentation The Award shall be in the form of a badge and a certificate accompanied by an appropriate citation, which will usually be formally presented at a Branch function. An Honour Board of Honorary Life Members shall be held on display at the office of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch.

A register of Honorary Life Members shall be kept.

Award for Distinguished Service The guidelines for selection of recipients of the Award for Distinguished Service be as follows: 2.2.1

The purpose of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) Award for Distinguished Service is to recognise outstanding service to the ADAVB or to dentistry by any person primarily in Victoria. The recipient of the Award for Distinguished Service shall have no special rights to membership of the Association 2.2.2

Nominations Members may submit in writing to the Honours and Awards Committee the names of persons who may be suitable for nomination for this award.

2.2.3 Election Recommendations shall be forwarded by the Honours and Awards Committee to the Council of the ADAVB for consideration in committee, which committee shall determine whether or not the recommendation shall be placed on the agenda of the Council meeting. The Award shall be made by the resolution of two-thirds of the members of Council present and voting. 2.2.4

Presentation The Award shall be in the form of a certificate accompanied by an appropriate citation, which will usually be formally presented at a Branch function. An Honour Board of recipients of the Award for Distinguished Service shall be held on display at the office of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch. A register of recipients of the Award for Distinguished Service shall be kept.

Dentistry Achievement Award The guidelines for the selection of recipients of the Dentistry Achievement Award be as follows: 2.3.1

Dentistry Achievement Award The purpose of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) Dentistry Achievement Award is to recognise special service by a Victorian Dentist in the promotion, development or representation of the dental profession. At its discretion, the ADAVB Council may make an Award/Awards on an annual basis.

All past and present Members of the ADAVB shall be eligible for nomination for the Award. The recipient of the Dentistry Achievement Award shall have no special rights to membership of the Association. 2.3.2

Nominations Nominations for the Award shall normally be called for through the ADAVB Newsletter (Refer Nominations Form and Newsletter Notice attached). Such nominations for the Award must have two – four proposers, who may only propose one nominee in any given year, and should be made without the knowledge of the Member nominated. However, in special circumstances nominations for the Award may be presented directly to the Council.

2.3.3

Election The Honours and Awards Committee shall consider both written and “in person” submissions from those proposing the nominations. The Committee may co-opt others to assist them to determine their recommendations to Council in relation to defined selection criteria. If Councillors are themselves nominated for the Award they shall be excluded from Council’s consideration of recommendations. The recommendation for the Award shall be considered in committee by the ADAVB Council. The Award shall be made by the resolution of two-thirds of the members of Council present and voting. The ADAVB Council shall make the final decision on the presentation and winner of the Dentistry Achievement Award, taking into consideration the recommendation of the Honours and Awards Committee.

2.3.4

Presentation The Award shall be in the form of a certificate accompanied by an appropriate citation, which will usually be formally presented at a Branch function. Council shall retain the right to make special mention of the achievements of any other candidate for the Award. In addition, the Branch will arrange professional recognition through ADAVB publications and the media.

An Honour Board of recipients of the Dentistry Achievement Award shall be held on display at the office of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch. A register of recipients of the Dentistry Achievement Award shall be kept. 2.3.5

Criteria The following criteria should be satisfied by Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) Members nominated for the Dentistry Achievement Award. The candidate should have made a special contribution to furthering the profession in: i. a particular field of dentistry or ii. to dentistry as a whole or iii. to the community as a whole. Generally greater consideration will be given to recent achievements and/or those beyond regular career activities. The candidate should demonstrate a strong commitment to the profession and have made a contribution that is considered to be striving for excellence at both professional and personal level. The candidate should be active in promoting, developing or representing the profession. This could be in any of the following ways: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii. viii.

2.4

public relations research through publications, conference presentations, etc. involvement with the ADAVB management in the public or private sector health system community service (including outside dentistry) promotion of dental health education clinical advancement.

Nomination Protocol 2.4.1

For each recommendation to Council, the Honours and Awards Committee shall provide a comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) for the candidate.

2.4.2

To assist Council’s deliberations a list of award recipients, CVs and citations of more recent award recipients should be available.

2.4.3

The above documents would be distributed to Council at the table, and then be returned for shredding/safe keeping as per Ethics cases.

2.4.4

Council, in considering the recommendations from the Honours and Awards Committee, shall have only two options:  

endorse the recommendation, or reject the recommendation, which will be sent back to the Honours and Awards Committee for further consideration.

3.

EXTERNAL AWARDS

3.1

External Awards may include Order of Australia awards, Australian Dental Association Inc. awards, small business awards and achievement for women awards.

3.2

External Awards shall be progressed in confidence by the Honours and Awards Committee, whether the nomination is initiated by the Branch

4.

DEATH OF A MEMBER

4.1

The standard action to be taken upon advice to the Branch of the death of a member shall be as follows:   

the letter of condolence upon the death of a present member or a prominent dental figure to be forwarded by the President to the spouse or next of kin the President or President’s nominee may attend the funeral of the deceased member the Executive Director or President to request the preparation of an obituary notice for publication in the Branch Newsletter by a close colleague or the Honours and Awards Committee where the deceased member was a past President or recipient of a Branch honour or award, a death notice with Branch logo to be placed in one daily paper (usually The Age).

5.

PRESENTATION OF AWARDS

5.1

The following shall be presented after lunch at a continuing professional development event, preferably in the first half year:   

Annual Student Prizes Association and Branch Honours, if appropriate 50 Year Certificates, if appropriate.

6.

YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATES

6.1

The Branch shall issue 25-years and 50-years of membership certificates.
