Effec ve communica on with vulnerable pa ents Current evidence shows that Australia has significant numbers of community members with complex trauma such as refugee and humanitarian entrants, women and children surviving family violence and adult survivors of child sexual abuse. These groups o en have unmet complex primary health needs including poor oral health. This workshop will provide prac cal ways to engage with pa ents who may have trauma histories in order to provide safe, sensi ve and suppor ve healthcare prac ses.

Presenters Helen Rimington, Mental Health Facilitator & Consultant Helen is a freelance Mental Health Facilitator and Consultant. She was the Director of En Masse, a Melbourne based workplace training and culture change organisa on for 5 years, a senior trainer at Beyond Blue for 4 years and Deputy CEO at Drummond Street Services in Carlton. Helen has a Master of Educa on and has developed curricula and taught on the subject of mental health at post‐graduate level at Melbourne University. Helen has worked in a range of se ngs from corporate training, Government departments, health & welfare and in the prison system. She also provides holis c execu ve coaching, as well as workplace media on and concilia on. Helen’s trademark approach is a unique blend of humorous, interac ve elements backed by a strong commitment to evidence‐based research, posi ve psychology and adult learning methodologies.
Karen Field, Chief Execu ve Officer, Social Worker Drummond Street Services and Stepfamilies Australia – Na onal Network Karen has 25 years experience in developing, managing and delivering a range of evidenced based programs and services to communi es, families, parents, young people and children. Her work has involved a range of sectors including health (primary & mental health), welfare, educa on, employment, jus ce sectors within government and community based organisa ons. Karen is a well‐regarded champion of research and evalua on to ensure that organisa ons build their capacity and contribute to the knowledge base of health and wellbeing of our most vulnerable and excluded groups in the community. She is a campaigner of human rights and dignity for Australians and the recogni on of all families, this is especially demonstrated in her commitment to Refugee and Humanitarian Entrants and the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered Community and their families.
