Oral health of women Brief Biological and sociological influences mean that women have higher rates of caries and varied periodontal risks compared with men. This presentation outlines a unique perspective of the oral health of women throughout life.
Learning outcomes At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: ÜÜ Understand the biological influences on women’s oral health ÜÜ Appreciate the social factors that affect women’s oral health ÜÜ Develop a deeper understanding of the influence that life events such as puberty, pregnancy and menopause have on a woman’s oral health.

Presenter Dr Elizabeth Milford As well as managing a 15 chair public dental clinic in metropolitan Melbourne, Elizabeth is a lecturer in communication with the University of Melbourne and a member of the board of a rural health service. She consults on patient rights and responsibilities and clinical ethics and is an experienced mentor and supervisor for dentists. She has also implemented strategies that respond to workforce challenges like support of new graduates, rural shortages and under-performing clinical staff.
Chair Dr Susan Wise President of the Australian Dental Association Victoria Branch Susan graduated as a dentist from The University of Melbourne in 1994. She worked as a general dentist for 5 years in Victoria before moving to Brisbane in 2000. Susan studied periodontics at the University of Queensland and was awarded a Masters of Dental Science (Periodontics) in 2002. She moved to Sydney in 2003 and worked as a specialist periodontist and returned to Melbourne in 2005 to set up her own specialist practice in periodontics in McKinnon. Susan has been a demonstrator for and examined undergraduate students and postgraduate students in periodontics as well as an examiner for overseas trained dentists. DATE
