Dental sleep medicine – what is all the noise about? Brief This program is provided by two leading clinicians who have extensive experience presenting locally and internationally. A Melbourne based sleep physician with experience in GP and dentist education, will provide an overview of sleep and sleep disordered breathing while shedding light into the world of sleep medicine and patient care. A world-renowned expert in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine, has tailored two presentations which will appeal to dentists new to the field of DSM, as well as those who are well experienced and are looking for an up to date review of the current evidence to help guide best practice.

Presenters Dr Fernanda Almeida (Brazil) Dr Fernanda Almeida is a dentist and one of the leading world authorities on dental sleep medicine. She received her DDS degree from the University of Sao Paulo and a Master’s of Science from Federal University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Further completing a Doctorate (PhD) at The University of British Columbia, Canada (UBC) where she is currently an Assistant Professor. Dr Almeida mixes a successful academic career with her private practice, which is restricted to the treatment of sleep disordered breathing. She has been awarded the WW Wood Teaching Award for her outstanding contributions to the educational progress of the undergraduate dental students at UBC, also the Pierre Robin Award from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (2011) and the Meier-Ewert Award from the German Dental Sleep Society (2012) for significant, original and sustained contributions evidenced by publications, and academic appointments and other efforts in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr Almeida has published over 60 peer reviewed articles in sleep/ dental sleep medicine and is an associate editor for the journal Sleep & Breathing and Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Dr David Cunnington
Specialist sleep physician Dr David Cunnington, provides healthcare to patients with complex sleep problems. David is a passionate advocate of sleep health and actively promotes education, research, and advocacy in sleep medicine. With qualifications from Harvard Medical School and two Australian Universities, David’s approach to diagnosis, treatment and management encompasses the use of behavioural and psychological treatments. Thanks to his broad experience and qualifications, David is able to use of a range of nondrug treatments and medications to manage patient sleep problems. Always interested in developing initiatives to promote sleep health and wellness in the community, David has an on-going commitment to teaching and training other health professionals in sleep medicine. David also frequently features in public speaking engagements and in the media as an expert commentator on sleep.
