Orthodontics for general dentists Brief We are bombarded with literature and advertising about various orthodontic products promising to deliver great alignment, more stable results, shorter treatment times and the like. The practitioner’s choice is broad, ranging from full or limited fixed conventional appliances to lingual braces, clear aligner appliances and myofuntional therapy, or even ‘no-brace’ treatment. It is important for the dental practitioner to be aware of the treatment outcomes and possible limitations of as many of these products and treatment philosophies as possible so that orthodontic treatment can be carried out with informed consent.

Learning outcomes At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: ÜÜ Understand and appreciate the importance of thorough orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, taking into consideration such factors as dentoalveolar and skeletal facial development norms ÜÜ Recognise the advantages and disadvantages of various appliances used in contemporary orthodontic treatment by critically appraising current orthodontic evidence ÜÜ Recognise the need to inform the patient of the applications and limitations of different orthodontic appliances as part of informed consent
