Pain management and pharmacotherapeutics Dr Sophia Richardson Dentists deal with pain, or perceived pain, every day in their surgery. Pain is the most common symptom for which a patient will seek help; and many patients will openly admit to being ‘scared of the pain’ they expect to experience in your hands. So, we need to be adept at assessing, preventing, treating and monitoring pain – as there is no bigger practice killer than poorly managing a patient’s pain. At the end of this session, participants will be able to: • Better understand the pain pathway • Modulate a patient’s pain experience • Apply the analgesic ladder.
