Rev. Ken Draughon ALABAMA DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT ds@adcag.org This Alabama AG Fellowship is over one hundred years old and it is alive and well. According to the American Family Association Journal, our national fellowship has grown over 460% since 1960 while mainline denominations have decreased from 25-80% over the same period. The heartbeat of this fellowship is missions, missions in the local church community and to the ends of the earth. The stronger the church is at home, the stronger its impact will be around the world. We still embrace the first-century mandate in Mark 16:15, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” We pair this mandate with the words of Jesus in Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” We must remember Jerusalem (our home) as we fulfill the Great Commission. I believe in world missions to my core, but I also understand that a church can’t please the Lord if it flies over its mission field to get to the mission field. Along with reaching the unreached peoples in foreign lands, we must reach our Jerusalem. In order to build a strong world missions’ emphasis, we have to be determined to build strong local churches in Alabama. Weak and sickly mothers rarely give birth to new babies. We must plant new churches across Alabama, and if we are to do that effectively, we must develop strong and healthy local churches that can birth these new works. The best way to establish strong AG churches in Alabama is to create strong, healthy leaders in our churches. The Lord has pressed upon my spirit that we are to create an environment for healthy leaders and healthy churches in Alabama. We are equipping leaders in our district to lead a process for developing an Alabama Healthy Church Network. We are also investing in Young Leaders creating a network of amazing young visionaries who are hungry to lead the charge reaching the communities of Alabama with the Good News. Another initiative that I’m excited about is our First Time Pastor’s Cohort bringing pastors who are pastoring for the first time together to sit at the table with seasoned pastors and pour into their lives the “nuts and bolts” of ministry. They can also get coaching from pastoral veterans. We also plan to create Pastor Care Network to accomplish the first “E” of our “3 Es” in our Mission statement which is to Encourage all of our ministers. I love this fellowship! At our age of over 100, we are celebrating all that the Lord has done for us. It’s like the song, “Look what the Lord has done....” We embrace all that the untold thousands have accomplished in Alabama these 105 years and focus on all the Lord is going to do for us in the days, weeks, months and years ahead (unless the trumpet sounds). We salute the soldiers of the cross over the past decades and posture ourselves to recruit, train, equip and send the soldiers of today and tomorrow. We are praying and forging ahead in several other areas that we will be sharing soon. This Alabama AG family is a great family and we’re glad you are a part of it. Our best days are ahead of us!
MINDS ON FIRE! God intends for our minds to be on fire with His Word and His Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, Hebrew has no unique term for “mind.” The Hebrews used one word to mean “mind,” “soul,” and “heart,” the single seat of one’s intellectual, spiritual, and emotional life. There was no differentiation. The idea that a person’s will, intellect, emotions, and spirit operate from different places is both unbiblical and physiologically untrue. This is not a matter of opinion. It is simply a biblical and biological fact. Our mind is the seat and source of all of these things. Biblically, our heart-and-mind is the place of thinking (Gen 6:5), memory MICHAEL D. SHARP, D.MIN. (Deut 4:9), intellect (Gen 17:17), meditation (Ps 19:14), decisions (2 Sam DISTRICT SECRETARY-TREASURER 7:3), judgment (1 Kings 3:9), understanding (Prov 8:5), and much more. msharp@adcag.org All hyper-speculative, uber-spiritual attempts to divide our hearts-andminds may sound profound and revelatory but have no foundation in Scripture. Greek does have separate words for heart (kardia) and mind (nous). Nevertheless, the New Testament still uses heart to describe the place of reasoning (Rom 2:14f), knowledge (2 Cor 4:6), thought (Heb 4:12), decisions (Matt 5:28), ideas (12:34), and so on. Here again we see no differentiation between heart-and-mind. You may have heard people try to distinguish between “head” knowledge and “heart” knowledge as if the head were somehow evil. But, everywhere in Scripture the words for “head” are always associated with respect, priority, leadership, even the source of life (Isa 1:6, Jdg 10:18, Rev 4:4, Acts 18:1f, 1 Cor 11:2f, Eph 4:15f, and more). Paul exalted wise thinking as a way to be Christlike (1 Cor 14:20). The head is that part of the body associated with Christ himself! The frequently misquoted phrase “knowledge puffs up but love builds up” is targeting not knowledge itself, but the sin of pride that some Corinthians were committing. Some in that church were proud of spiritual gifts, others were proud of how much they knew, and none of the proud people were walking in love! Paul corrected both groups for their pride and lack of love, but he never put down spiritual gifts or knowledge. Fools hate knowledge (Prov 1:22). Wise people want to listen and learn (Prov 1:5). Peter and Paul told us to increase in knowledge (2 Pet 2:1, Phil 1:9). Discernment and spiritual warfare require knowledge (Prov 15:4, 2 Cor 10:5). Throughout the Bible God exalts the mind, teaching, knowledge, and understanding. The last words of Jesus and Paul were commands to teach, meaning to systematically, carefully instruct disciples in the correctly understood Word of God and Gospel of Jesus. Whenever anyone seeks to degrade thinking, meditating, learning, evaluating, any of the rational processes necessary for understanding God’s Word and discerning truth from error they are doing a dangerous thing. Whenever anyone seeks to exalt feeling, emoting, intuiting, any of the non-rational processes at the expense of the mind, they are doing a dangerous thing. God and His Word never separate the mind from the heart. God’s appeal is always come, let us reason together; search the scriptures to see if these things be so; teach, be taught, learn, think, be renewed in your mind. God always exalts the life of the mind. It is in our mind-and-heart that we bear the image of God. Indeed, the ultimate expressions of God’s revelation of Himself to humanity were in Jesus and in the written word. God chose properly defined and understood words to carry the truth about Himself, life, sin, salvation, eternity, even about Jesus Christ. Miracles, images, even Jesus himself had to be explained and understood through words! And, that truth, those words, are understood through thought, through the mind-and-heart. If you denigrate mind and thought, intellect and education, will and formation, you oppose God and His Word. From the understanding of the Gospel, the submission of the will, the repentance of the heart (repentance = meta-noia, change of mind), and belief unto salvation flows joy unspeakable. Good and godly emotion depends on, flows from, a godly mind that has been renewed through God’s Word and Spirit. Friends let us agree with God. Let us be people formed by God’s Word. Let us love learning that we may know God better and love others more. Let us have minds on fire!

DEEPER WKND RECAP Our twenty-second annual Discipleship Weekend was held at Springville Camp and Conference Center the weekend of January 18-20, 2019. This year was a great success with attendance of approximately 530 students and leaders from across the state. Our speaker, Joseph Kellogg, lead youth pastor at Oaks Fellowship in Waxahachie, Texas did an outstanding job teaching our students, and challenging our youth leaders throughout the weekend. His infectious spirit and communication style connected with the audience in a profound way. In addition, Southeastern Worship led us in praise and worship and did a wonderful job of ministering to our camp and bringing us into God’s presence with music. The 23 small group sessions, led by our youth leaders across the state, gave our students several opportunities for intensive bible study. Leo Colon from Praise Family Church in Mobile taught the leaders small group session and brought much insightful information to them. We also commissioned Campus Missionaries from schools all over the state. Special thanks to Jimmy Watson, who organized all of our student small groups, and to all the Deeper staff for their assistance throughout the weekend. We received many positive reports from both students and leaders on the tremendous impact this weekend has had on their lives, and look forward to hearing testimonies from our Alabama students.

BOOK REVIEWS: PREACHING CHRIST FROM THE WHOLE BIBLE It is some)mes difficult to know how to correctly preach Christ from the whole Bible. Knowing how the whole Bible fits and flows together in becoming Chris)an Scripture is essen)al. The two best books of the past twenty years on these subjects are reviewed here. They are by two outstanding scholars and preachers and were twice on required textbook lists in my doctoral program seminars. These books are used in colleges and seminaries worldwide, and are the best you can buy on preaching Christ from the whole Bible. (And, they make great gi1s for pastors!)
Preaching Christ from the Old Testament: A Contemporary HermeneuHcal Method, Sidney Greidanus, Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1999, 373 pages. Award-winning author Sidney Greidanus is emeritus professor of preaching at Calvin Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He organizes this book in a logical, sequen)al manner. He first examines both the necessity of preaching Christ and the necessity of preaching from the Old Testament. He explains the unique nature of the Old and how to correctly understand its rela)onship to the New. The history of preaching Christ from the Old Testament is then summarized, beginning with the ancient church and concluding in the 20th century. Greidanus next explains the New Testament’s principles for interpre)ng the Old. He describes the legi)mate ways leading from the Old Testament to Christ, including the ways of redemp)ve-historical progression, promise-fulfillment, typology, and longitudinal themes. The author proceeds to examine each one of these in detail from the scriptures. This chapter, en)tled “The Christocentric Method,” is a powerfully enlightening explana)on of how the Old Testament flows into the New, and is fulfilled in Christ. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book! The two final chapters take you step by step through the process of building a Christ-centered sermon from Old Testament texts, even providing examples of how to do it. This book is the number one text on preaching Christ from the Old Testament. Its clear and simple style makes its great truths accessible to any reader. It corrects errors we some>mes fall into and provides outstanding insight into properly handling God’s Word. I recommend this wonderful book without reserva)on. It should be used regularly by any serious preacher. Preaching the Whole Bible as ChrisHan Scripture: The ApplicaHon of Biblical Theology to Expository Preaching, Graeme Goldsworthy, Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2000, 272 pages. Graeme Goldsworthy is lecturer emeritus in Old Testament, biblical theology, and hermeneu)cs at Moore Theological College, Sidney, Australia. This book was honored by Preaching magazine as Book of the Year for 2000. Goldsworthy organized his book with two large sec)ons. In the first he deals at length with such basic ques)ons as “What is the Bible?, What is Biblical Theology?, What Kind of Unity Does the Bible Have?, What is the Structure of Biblical Revela)on?, and Can I Preach a Chris)an Sermon Without Men)oning Jesus?” Having laid this founda)on, in the second sec)on the author begins by examining the progressive revela)on of God and Christ in the Bible’s theological historical epochs, and how it all )es together. Goldsworthy then describes how to correctly see and preach Christ from Old Testament Historical Narra)ve, the Law, the Prophets, the Wisdom Literature, and the Psalms. He next does the same with Apocalyp)c literature, the Gospels, Acts, and the Epistles. Goldsworthy concludes by explaining the nature of a holis)c, redemp)ve-historical, Christ-centered biblical theology, and how to preach faithfully from this essen>al Chris)an perspec)ve. This work is the preeminent text on applying biblical theology to preaching. In a day when much preaching is superficial, man-centered, focused on self-help, and filled with clichés and cheerleading, Goldsworthy’s work is a powerful blast of Christ-centered, Bible-based Truth. It is bracing, it is right, and it should be used by every sincere preacher of God’s Word. Michael D. Sharp, D.Min. District Secretary-Treasurer ALSOM Director
