Beyond Tongues
Early theologians taught a subsequent experience to salvation and defined its purpose. Some are as follows: John Wesley taught Spirit baptism was a second experience apart from salvation, known as sanctification. Reformed Calvinist taught Spirit baptism was equal to conversion. Revivalists taught Spirit baptism was a second work of grace. Charles Finney taught the Baptism in the Holy Spirit empowered Christians for ministry. D.L. Moody emphasized Spirit baptism to empower for service. While the above may not have agreed with the initial physical evidence of speaking in other tongues at the infilling of the Spirit, all agreed that the Holy Spirit had purpose in His coming. We must also believe that today and make ourselves avail‐ able to all He has for us to be and do. Jesus promised He would send us another comforter and identified Him as the Holy Spirit. He told us of how He would con‐ vict and reprove when He came. (John chapters 14 and 16) The Holy Spirit waded through all my past and present sin to let me see my sin as I compared myself to scripture and the Godhead during conviction. I am ever so grateful. Upon reception of the Hoy Spirit, I experienced the joy of speaking in tongues, which is still being experienced today by all who will dare believe. But what about all the glorious gifts and fruit we still need? Galatians records the fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temper‐ ance. How often do we intentionally seek to make these fruits supreme in our lives? We not only need them for ourselves, but we need them in our lives to show the love and power of the Holy Spirit. Look at the life of Jesus as it is recorded in his‐ tory. Can you see these fruits in His example and ministry? Since these fruits are spiritual, they can’t be developed by human engineering and technique. We must seek God for His mercy as we yield our lives to what we learn through Bible study and our living in the presence of the Holy Spirit. We may not have to do anything to be bad; but we must, however, have the grace of God help us to be good in this wicked world. And there are the gifts (spirituals) of the Holy Spirit listed in I Corinthians 12: 1 – 10. Churches today are overlooking and forbidding the use of the marvelous manifestations of the Holy Spirit because of past counterfeits and flesh. That’s like telling a homeowner he can’t speak in his own home when you are visiting. I believe God still has the genuine gifts to share with His people if allowed. I long to once again see the manifestation of the Spirit regularly in our churches. While the counterfeit has been in the vocal gifts, all seem to be too controversial to accept in the house of worship. But, what better place? We live in a world trained to be educated through the visual. From the youngest age children are taught by visuals. In my day it was flannel graph, then slides, and then an occasional movie. Now video has taken over. Even sermons are projected on a screen, originated in another auditorium. I’m for all that works. I, like you, have my preferences but the end result should always bring glory and people to God. If the world is now poised to see, why should the works of God be limited? Jesus healed. Jesus performed miracles. Jesus prophesied. Jesus discerned the hearts of others. Jesus was wisdom and knowledge. Why should we not see and hear the things of God in the house of God? You see, speaking in tongues is the beginning, but the fruit and gifts (spirituals) are a part of the process of our growing in grace, power, knowledge, and discernment. As Paul said, “But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.” I Cor. 12: 31 Fear of the unknown should never prevent us from spiritually discerning the will of God and allowing the power of God to be demonstrated. Love, however, will give place to the things of God.
Ken Draughon ALABAMA DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT ds@adcag.org
We just completed our 2017 Alabama District Council at Garywood AG. Pastor Jeff and Stacey Leatherman and their team were excellent hosts for our Alabama family. Pastor Tommy and Lori Conner and their team led us in worship and blessed everyone in attendance. The District Council officers, committee chairmen and their teams made everything run smoothly. We also thank the administrative assistants for their help. Each speaker added to the whole in challenging our folks to be used of God. We express our thanks to Jason Loper, Scott Martin and Scott Wilson for sharing God’s word with us. Our theme was God is Able and He was and is able. We congratulate District Youth Director Steve Mason, District Missions Director David Strahan, General Presbyter Murray Kelly, Assistant District Christian Education Director Vint Norris and Assistant District Women’s Ministries Director Bobbi Tyus for being re-elected to their positions. We also chose Alabama Youth Alive Missionary Ben Russell’s name and Pastor Joe Simmons’ name to be sent to the General Presbytery to be considered as Alabama’s Under-Forty nonresident presbyter selection and Alabama’s African-American selection respectively to be considered for General Council. I was privileged to share God’s word in our opening service on Monday night. The Apostle Paul wrote that God is Able in 2 Corinthians 9:8. Two thousand years ago, God ignited a breathtaking revolution using a handful of radical Christ followers. The world has never been same, but we have seen that revolution fizzle in America. The church in America needs to quit hitting the “snooze button” and wake up! Today is OUR DAY and it’s time to be the radical fire-baptized church God intends us to be. We must take the “handcuffs off of God” and allow Him to have His way among us. God is all-powerful, He has the ability and strength to do whatever He pleases. His power is not restrained or inhibited by any of His created beings. People and nations are powerless when confronted by His might. Our amazing God is capable of doing anything. No task is too big for Him. He never fails. And He is never tired, frustrated, or discouraged. • No matter what you might be facing, God can help you. • Nothing is too hard for Him. No need is too great for Him to meet. • No problem is too complicated for Him to solve. • No foe is too strong for Him to conquer. • No prayer is too difficult for Him to answer. The Bible promises, “By His mighty power at work within us, He is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope” (Ephesians 3:20). God is able to do more than man can understand. Nothing is IMPOSSIBLE for Him. Again, thanks to EVERYONE who made our council a blessing to others. I also want to thank everyone that attended this year’s family gathering at Garywood. Remember, let’s TAKE THE HANDCUFFS OFF OF GOD!

10 Incorrect Thoughts Church Members Have About Pastors 1. They are supposed to be sinless. Sorry, but it isn’t so. Pastors are people just like everyone else. Only Jesus lived a sinless, perfect life. 2. They are supposed to be perfect examples in every area. Nope. Pastors have strengths and weaknesses. They are good at some things and not so good at others. While they may be a great preacher, they may not handle stress very well, or always be the perfect parent. 3. They all like fried chicken. Well mostly, maybe, but no. 4. They have a direct line to God. Yes, but so do you. 5. They are all Biblical scholars. If only; a scholar is a specialist in a particular branch of study, or a distin‐ guished academic. While most pastors know more about the Bible than many, most don’t know as much as we should. We must never stop learning and growing. 6. They have perfect families. No, and this expectation is unrealistic. No one has a perfect family, and the pastor and his family have to work at it and work through challenges and difficulties just like everyone else, and sometimes we fail. 7. Pastors are there to do the work of the church. No again, pastors are there to equip, train, and enable the body to do the work of the church. We all have a part to play. 8. Pastors should always be on fire for God and emotionally up. While it would be easy to say yes to this one, I have never met this person. We all have down days, we all have to work at staying our best, and there are times we need encouragement. This expectation can cause a pastor to produce a façade, which is even worse. 9. Pastors should be available for me 24/7. Yes and no. In cases of emergency all pastors do their best to be available, however pastors have families and needs as well. No one person can be there for all church members all the time. 10. Pastors should know my needs without me asking. No. Pastors are not mind readers. If you are going into the hospital, are sick, have a special need let him know.
Note: When I use “him” in regards to the pastor it is neutral and applies to male or female pastors.
