We are believing God for a tremendous outpouring of his Spirit during these regional conferences. We are expec ng every par cipant to experience his presence and be encouraged by the fellowship. The Bible says one shall chase a thousand and two shall chase ten thousand (Deuteronomy 32:20). God has called us into a family, and we must cooperate to accomplish the purposes of God. It is temp ng to separate and go solo, but that is a sure route to insigni cance. We all need the coopera on of our God-given family members to reach heights of greatness. We need to realize that God’s favor and blessings are a “body thing” and not a “solo thing.” We look forward to seeing you at your Regional Conference.

WISDOM in the TRIAL: IS IT FALSE or TRUE?
James 1:2-5, 3:13-18 “2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the tes ng of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance nish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without nding fault, and it will be given to you. ….. 3:13-18 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bi er envy and sel sh ambi on in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and sel sh ambi on, there you nd disorder and every evil prac ce. 17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is rst of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impar al and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” When he wrote this le er James, brother of Jesus, was wri ng to all Chris ans who su er trials of any kind. Through James God tells us that we will indeed go through many di cult seasons in this life. Some mes we will not be immediately delivered. However, by xing our eyes on Jesus during the storm, our faith will be tested, re ned, and strengthened, growing in us the ability to steadfastly endure trials without losing our joy. Over me, serious trials endured in faith and joy will mature me, grow me up in God. The key to this growth is asking God for wisdom from above, the true wisdom that is from God. Godly wisdom enables us to understand be er what is going on and to live appropriately during any season. Godly wisdom enables me to make good decisions, be consistent and dependable instead of unstable, ckle, and restless. We prove that we have received godly wisdom by making good decisions for ourselves that are also in the best interests of others, decisions that line up with God’s word. Wisdom from God is always revealed with a humble servant’s heart. We set aside our preferences and put the best interests of others rst. We live in a way and do those things that are good for other people rather than sel shly insis ng on what we want. If we’re walking in godly wisdom, we are considerate toward the needs of others, full of mercy toward them. We are “submissive,” a word that means teachable, open to reason, persuasion, and a be er understanding - ever more wisdom. There is always the danger that in the pressure- lled season of trial we will be deceived by earthly wisdom, a false “wisdom” that claims to know the best way for us to live. We will not show a humble servant’s heart toward what is best for all but will insist on our own earthly “rights”. We will be marked by a zealous, aggressive a tude as we sel shly insist on our own way. Earthly wisdom re ects the values and priori es of our earthly culture: Sel sh ambi on, greed, personal power, self- rst in all things. James says that all kinds of evil behaviors ow from this ungodly earthly wisdom. The disorder, strife, and rebellious spirit produced by this false “wisdom” proves that it is indeed “devilish” just as James says. It will bring the death - not life - of ourselves and others.
Friends, God has commanded us to ask Him for true wisdom from above so that we will understand our mes and know how to live. Instead of the aggressive, asser ve, self-seeking behavior produced by the false wisdom of this present evil age, Christ-like wisdom will begin to ll us with the life, joy, and peace of a humble servant’s heart. We will always be seeking what is best for everyone around us, especially the household of God. Like Jesus, it will bring us joy to be the servants of all, even in the season of trial. The peace men oned here is the holis c “Shalom” of God, that nourishing, nurturing fullness of life for us and our community of faith that ows from the wisdom and Presence of God.

BOOK REVIEWS: Removing Our Cultural Filters If we are to clearly understand the Bible we must have - must have - the knowledge and insight that the work of excellent biblical scholars offers us. They have done all the heavy lifting and they offer to us the fruit of their labor. They are among the teachers that God has given to Christ’s Church. To claim we do not need them is to refuse the gifts of God. Scholars of Scripture do not work alone, in a vacuum. They work as a community of students, researchers, teachers who communicate with and correct one another. In John 16:12-15 during the Last Supper Jesus promised his disciples that he would send the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth. Many people misunderstand this promise, thinking it applies directly to them as an individual without any mediator between them. That is dangerously wrong! Only God himself knows how many heresies have been birthed, and how many lives ruined, when individual Christians and pastors refused the instruction, direction, and correction of properly trained Teachers-and-Pastors, choosing instead to rely directly and only on the Holy Spirit alone to “reveal” the meaning of Scripture. The direct, unmediated help of the Spirit alone is not enough to help us understand all of Scripture. God never intended it to be. There are two simple truths about John 16 that help us understand Christ’s promise. First, Jesus was speaking only to the twelve disciples he had chosen to become the Twelve Apostles. This promise was made to the Twelve Apostles only, not to any of his other disciples. Second, the pronoun used - “you” - is second person plural throughout that chapter. In other words, Jesus never promised that the Holy Spirit would lead an individual Apostle into all truth, much less any other individual, including me and you! Christ only made this promise to the Apostles as a group of Twelve! And this is exactly what happened. After his resurrection Jesus spent 40 days teaching his Apostles and other disciples the correct way (the only correct way) to interpret the Old Testament through the person and work of Jesus himself. At Pentecost the Spirit came to begin his multi-faceted work, including leading the Twelve Apostles as a group into all truth about Christ and God’s redemptive mission. Acts 6 tells us that this growing knowledge and understanding of Scripture was accomplished as the Twelve met together for prayer and the study of Scripture. The teaching of Jesus and the Spirit’s revelation to the Apostles was shared in the preaching and teaching of the Apostles and in the writing of the New Testament. After the death of the Apostles and the completion of their writings the Holy Spirit continued to lead Christ’s Church into truth by giving the Church specially gifted and trained teachers who helped succeeding generations - including ours - understand the faith once for all delivered to the saints through the Twelve Apostles. The Spirit also illuminates the minds of believers to correctly understand Scripture as they read it, or as it was read to them, with the sound instruction of Christ’s Church. Between us and the cultures, worldviews, and languages of Scripture lies a vast gulf of 2,000 to 3,500 years. The differences in our culture and those of the people in the Bible are far greater than we can ever know. It is not enough to simply read an English language translation of the Bible alone, or even with our local church or our denominational community, and think we can fully, accurately understand the Bible. We must receive the wisdom and knowledge of the Teachers of the Church. The foundation of that is a clearer understanding of our own cultural presuppositions and how they usually differ radically from those of the people in the Bible. These two companion volumes offer us the essential first steps on that journey. The first was reviewed in our last issue but is offered again because of its importance. I encourage you to buy these books. You will understand God’s Word better if you do.
BOOK REVIEWS: Removing Our Cultural Filters (continued) Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blinders to Better Understand the Bible, E. Randolph Richards and Brandon J. O’Brien, IVP Books: 2012, 240 pages. These two authors, Richards and O’Brien, bring to this work long experience in global mission, cross-cultural ministry, and scholarly research. They explore how Christians in the West (North America and Europe) have long misread many passages of Scripture through the lenses of our Western cultures. They examine how our Western cultural preconceptions on key issues differ radically from biblical cultures, Western preconceptions on issues such as social mores, ethnicity, language, individualism, honor/shame, relationships, virtue, and vice. The authors explore how the culture(s) of Jesus’ understood the issue, how that impacts the biblical passage, and how our radically different preconceived ideas cause us to misunderstand that Bible passage. These misunderstandings have often been passed down in the Western church for hundreds of years even among many teachers. Throughout the book the authors offer ways that we can remove our cultural blinders and see the text with ancient eyes. This is the only way that we can truly hear God’s words, the only way we can clearly understand what God said and have any hope of correctly applying God’s word today.
Misreading Scripture with Individualist Eyes: Patronage, Honor, and Shame in the Biblical World, E. Randolph Richards and Richard James, IVP Books: 2020, 291 pages. In another groundbreaking volume E. Randolph Richards, this time with coauthor Richard James, opens our eyes to many ways we have been misreading Scripture. The authors structure the book in three sections. Social Structures of the Biblical World explains the importance of Kinship, Patronage, and Brokerage in that world. Social Tools Enforcing Our Values examines the nature and function of Honor, Shame, and Boundaries in the life of the biblical world. The Collectivism of the Biblical World evaluates the pervasively communal worldview of Scripture, how Kinship, Boundaries, Patronage, Honor, and Shame functioned in that communal world. The authors conclude by examining how all of these aspects of the biblical world control the range of meanings that a passage can have. God chose to reveal himself and his redemptive mission to the nations within the cultures of the Old and New Testaments. The stories and teaching of Scripture are pervaded by all of the cultural values mentioned above. In order to correctly understand what is happening in any biblical passage we must understand what was being said and understood in that ancient context. Only then can we apply the principles of that passage to ourselves and our world today. In their conclusion the authors carefully consider what the communal, collectivist cultures and values of Scripture mean for our individualist American culture. The authors conclusively demonstrate that American individualism and exceptionalism often badly distort our understanding and application of God’s word and of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have studied the Bible and all things associated with its history and interpretation diligently, carefully, formally, and personally, to the best of my limited ability, for 50 years. Every two to three pages of this book I was learning a critically important piece of information that showed me how and why I was interpreting a biblical passage incorrectly. My understanding of Scripture and my skills at reading the Bible have benefited tremendously from these two books. They are important, valuable works that every minister and lay teacher should have. They are outstanding examples of how much we have missed, of how we can seriously misread Scripture with American eyes if we refuse the gift of Teachers God has given us to help us understand his word.
IMPORTANT FINANCIAL INFORMATION for MINISTERS We sometimes find that, for whatever reasons, some of our ministers are not clear on our financial obligations to the Alabama Ministry Network. We have begun to publish these more frequently in order to clear up misunderstandings proactively before ministers fall behind in their giving. Here are the Network Bylaws followed by an explanation. Please note: 1) Your General Council (GC) dues (paragraph d) and your Network tithes (paragraph a) are two different things; 2) Your GC dues must be paid directly to the General Council and cannot be processed by the Network Office; 3) Your Network tithes obligations are the same no matter what level of credential you hold.
ALABAMA NETWORK CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS ARTICLE VIII. FINANCES Section 2 - Obligations of Ministers
a. All ministers shall be required to remit on a monthly basis 7.5% of their income earned from Gospel ministry and from secular work for the support of the Network general fund. b.
The following exceptions are permitted: 1. Ministers who receive wages strictly from secular employment and regularly attend a local assembly shall be required to support the local assembly with 5% of their income and shall also be required to support the Network general fund on a monthly basis with 5% of their income. 2. Evangelists shall be required to support the local assembly of which they are a member with 5% of their income and shall also be required to support the Network general fund on a monthly basis with 5% of their income. 3. Financial obligations of missionaries, military and industrial chaplains, and nationally appointed home missionaries are as outlined in Article VII, Section 8c of the General Council Bylaws.
c. Compliance with the above requirements shall be a prerequisite for membership in the Alabama Ministry Network and for the renewal of credentials of all active ministers. Any minister whose obligation falls into arrears shall be required to appear before his/her respective Sectional committee at the time of the Sectional Councils, and his/her credentials will be withheld until such time as his/her financial obligation is brought up-to- date. d. All ordained ministers shall recognize their obligation to support our General Council headquarters office in Springfield by contributing from their tithes or as an offering, the sum of twenty-five dollars ($25.00) per month. Licensed ministers shall contribute the sum of twenty dollars ($20.00) per month, and certified ministers shall contribute the sum of ten dollars ($10.00) per month. e. Each minister should accept the responsibility to provide a retirement income for himself and his/her family by contributing an amount equal to 5% of the minister’s salary to the MBA minister’s account. Explanatory Note: If a credentialed minister receives any income from ministry, whether regular or irregular, part-time or full-time, or if they serve in a pastoral role in a local church, then they are required to remit to the Network office on a monthly basis 7.5% of their income from all sources, including secular work. If a credentialed minister receives no income at all from ministry, and only receives income from secular work, and does not serve in any pastoral role in a local church, then they are required to remit to the Network office on a monthly basis 5% of their income from all sources. Exceptions are only as provided in Paragraph b. In both scenarios, the remainder of the minister’s tithe should be paid to the local church they attend or serve. You may pay your tithes by mail, or online at the Alabama Network Website at www.adcag.org, or by Text at Text #73256 Message: ADCAG. If paying online, always enter your personal name in the memo box to ensure that your tithe is credited properly to your account. Regarding Senior Retired status: Ministers who meet all of the following conditions … 1) are 65 or older, 2) receive no regular income from ministry, 3) do not serve as permanent lead pastor, and 4) have formally requested and received a ministerial status change to SENIOR RETIRED, have no financial obligations to either the General Council or Alabama Ministry Networks. Senior Retired ministers may still be volunteer chaplains, serve without regular remuneration parttime on church staffs, serve in pulpit supply and as short-term interim pastors for love offerings or honorariums, etc. Please contact the Network office with any questions as to your proper status. Any exceptions based on category of ministry (missionary, evangelist, etc.) are as described in the Network Bylaws. Whenever you have questions about how the Network requirements apply to your particular circumstances, please contact the Network Secretary-Treasurer’s office.
MINISTERIAL UPDATES

Merits of Biblical Counseling I have heard over the years well-meaning ministers say something to this e ect; “if you just get in the altar you won’t need counseling”. I believe what they are trying to say is that if you get your life right with God your problems will go away. This isn’t always the case. You can get things right with God, but if you con nue the same behaviors that got you into the problem you will shortly nd yourself there again. Some confuse secular counseling or therapy with Biblical Counseling. The goal of any true Biblical counseling is to help people change their beliefs and behaviors to be consistent with God’s Word. That indeed will bring change to people’s lives. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge believer in the ministry around the altar, but God’s Word also strongly emphasizes teaching which in essence is what Biblical Counseling does. Consider these merits of Biblical Counseling. 1. Biblical Counseling reinforces what the Pastor preaches. The pastor and Biblical counselor work as a team to teach his people the Word of God. Their teaching is not in con ict. 2. Biblical Counseling deals with speci c problems and ming. Preaching reaches the congrega on as a whole or in general terms. Biblical counseling can take the me to zero in on the person’s individual issues and needs. 3. Biblical Counseling is not an alterna ve to the altar or prayer. It certainly isn’t either or. I agree a lot of secular counseling would be counter to Chris an beliefs and conduct and I would not recommend most of it, however Biblical Counseling coupled with prayer is a Biblical principle. Not only must we pray for people, but teach them how to live their lives Biblically. In a sense Biblical counseling is Sunday School and preaching presented in a con den al, personal, one on one environment. 4. Biblical Counseling protects the pastor. Some counseling the pastor should not do himself. He should not counsel complex situa ons unless trained, he should avoid dealing with sexual problems or misconduct especially with women in the congrega on, and should avoid any counseling situa on that would hinder the pastor’s ability to serve them as their pastor. Passing o to a quali ed counselor those situa ons allows the pastor to focus on being their pastor. 5. Biblical Counseling combines God’s Word with counseling techniques that are designed to help each individual understand and incorporate God’s Word. Everyone is di erent. People learn di erently, people’s backgrounds and history is di erent, and people process di erently. The Biblical counselor can take the me to navigate these di erences to best serve the client.

6. There are other good reasons to incorporate Biblical Counseling into your ministry repertoire, but one thing for sure once you see the bene ts you will be glad you use this wonderful, Biblical resource.
