The old year is behind us, and 2016 is here and with that comes the task of moving into new territory and taking on new conquests for the Kingdom of God. Last year we celebrated our 100th Anniversary as the Alabama District Council of the AG. We also returned to Hartford where it all began in 1915 to gather for two days to go “Back to our Roots.” The Lord met us there and challenged us to forge ahead with faith that He was going to do mighty things through this fellowship if we follow Him. As we look into 2016, we look at a block of time God has given us. We see twelve months, fifty-two weeks, 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds. And all is a gift from God. We have done nothing to deserve it, earn it, or purchase it. Like the air we breathe, time comes to us as a part of life. What are we going to do this year so when we wake up on December 31 we can hear our Lord say, “Well done!”

As we begin this new year, make a plan to be the best for God you can this year. Jonathan Edwards said, “Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will.”

Let me share a couple of scriptures with you. First, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland”(Isaiah 43:18-19). You may not feel like you have accomplished God’s plan for your life, but God is ready to help you be all that he has called you to be. The second text declares His intentions for you: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”(Jeremiah 29:11).

Kristi Norris will be the new Alabama Girls’ Ministries Coordinator. Kristi has served along side her husband, Vint, in ministry for 32 years. They are currently pastoring at Orchard Assembly in Mobile. The Norris’ have three daughters, Kellie, Melissa and Elizabeth.

Kristi has been involved in Girls Ministries for over 25 years. Her desire is to see girls grow in their relationship with Christ and be discipled in a fun and loving environment.

Tips For Studying I have heard Dr. Sharp mention a number of times recently the importance of study and education. I thought I would add to the conversation by suggesting some good study tips. The key to effective studying isn’t cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter. You can begin studying smarter with these ten proven habits.

1. How you approach studying matters: Too many people look at studying as a necessary task, not an enjoyment or opportunity to learn. Study with the right attitude.

2. Where you study is important: Study where it is conducive to concentrating and free of distractions.

3. Bring everything you need, nothing you don’t: Unfortunately, when you find an ideal place to study, sometimes people bring things they don’t need. For instance, if your I-Pad has a favorite game on it will you be tempted to use it more for play than study.

4. Outline and rewrite your notes: Most people find that keeping to a standard outline format helps them boil information down to its most basic components. People find that connecting similar concepts together makes it easier to remember when the exam comes around. The important thing to remember in writing outlines is that an outline only works as a learning tool when it is in your own words and structure. Every person is unique in how they put similar information together (called “chunking” by cognitive psychologists).

5. Use memory games (mnemonic devices): Memory games, or mnemonic devices, are methods for remembering pieces of information using a simple association of common words. The key to such memory devices is the new phrase or sentence you come up with has to be more memorable and easier to remember than the terms or information you’re trying to learn.

6. Make a schedule you can stick to: Too many people treat studying as the thing to do when you get around to it or have some spare time. But if you schedule study time just as your class time is scheduled, you’ll find it becomes much less of a hassle in the long run.

7. Take breaks: When you get tired you lose cognitive retention. You may read the material, but it doesn't stay with you. Take a break and come back to it. Sometimes a break of 10-15 minutes is all you need.

8. Keep healthy and balanced: You study most effectively when you remember the three Fs; fresh, fed and focused. You need sleep, nutrition and concentration to study effectively.

9. Bathe your study in prayer: Ask God to help you as you study by giving you guidance, discernment and retention.

Prayer makes everything better.

10. Don’t forget to learn: Studying isn’t just about preparing a sermon. Studying is an effort to actually learn things, to truly know God and how to properly represent Him. Studying isn't a chore, but a wonderful opportunity to become a better disciple of the Lord.

GOD’S SUPER-APOSTLES and A NEW APOSTOLIC REFORMATION? The Pentecostal – charismatic movement has been a prolific source for aberrant, heretical teachings and practices for over a century. One of the more recent and successful misguided movements calls itself the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR). With its roots in the late 1940’s New Order of the Latter Rain, the NAR has many extreme or heretical doctrines and practices. These include the restoration of apostles and prophets on a par with the New Testament, the necessity of submitting to NAR apostles and prophets as foundational to church government, obeying directive personal prophecy as essential for doing God’s will, the rise of an elite uniquely powerful end-time generation of people who will perform greater miracles than Jesus and the Twelve Apostles and conquer the world for God, the impartation of spiritual gifts at will by apostles and prophets, the importance of dreams, visions, and prophetic words as “present truth” that is just as inspired as the Bible, and the list continually grows.

The Assemblies of God in 1949 officially rejected the Latter Rain movement as heterodox, unbiblical, and dangerous. Classical Pentecostals have consistently upheld that rejection since then. For years the Latter Rain movement largely disappeared from view, but it resurfaced in the form of the NAR in the 1980’s. Promising endtime revival, greater spiritual power, and more spectacular supernatural experiences, the NAR has grown into an influential movement. It’s pervasive errors and excesses have hurt many thousands of people.

Two recent books provide the most balanced and thoroughly researched examination of the NAR ever done. These outstanding works are endorsed by prominent Pentecostal scholars and leaders, including Craig Keener, Amos Yong, Vinson Synan, Michael Clarensau, and others. They provide a detailed analysis of the rise of the NAR. They conduct an in-depth evaluation of all NAR doctrines and practices, revealing NAR’s repeated misinterpretation of Scripture, and correctly explaining what all of the relevant biblical passages really mean.

The authors, R. Douglas Geivett and Holly Pivec, are evangelical Christians and scholars active in ministry and apologetics. They believe in the continuing supernatural ministry of the Spirit. They accept NAR followers as fellow Christians trapped in serious doctrinal errors. Their evaluation is very fair, and therefore very devastating to the NAR. As you read you will encounter the leaders, language, teachings, and practices of the NAR. You will realize how deeply these erroneous beliefs have penetrated many Pentecostal churches and ministries. You will recognize the names of prominent ministers and ministries that are a part of the NAR. You will realize how unbiblical and how dangerous the NAR is for genuine, biblical Pentecostal life and practice. Every Pentecostal / charismatic minister and lay leader should read these books. If you are a discerning Pastor, teacher, or leader, then you love God and His Word and His People, and you want to know the truth. These books tell the truth, truth that some Pentecostals / charismatics will not want to hear. I urge you to order them today.

God’s Super-Apostles: Encountering the Worldwide Prophets and Apostles Movement, R. Douglas Geivett and Holly Pivec, Wooster, OH: Weaver Book Company, 2014, 159 pages.

In this book the authors provide an introduction and overview of the NAR. All of the NAR’s major teachings and practices are examined and compared with Scripture. A glossary of NAR terminology equips the reader to recognize such terms as evidence of NAR influence. Lists of NAR teachers and organizations are provided. This book is excellent for pastoral teaching or for a small group study (under good leaders!). “If you have a loved one who has been drawn into this movement, or you want a brief and accurate introduction to it, or if you … simply want a brief introduction for yourself, this book is for you.”

A New Apostolic Reformation?: A Biblical Response to a Worldwide Movement, R. Douglas Geivett and Holly Pivec, Wooster, OH: Weaver Book Company, 2014, 254 pages.

In this book Geivett and Pivec go into greater depth. They examine the historicaltheological origins of the NAR, its growth, its attempts to gain influence in politics and among other churches. They explore all unique NAR doctrines and practices including apostles, prophets, apostolic unity through church government, strategic level spiritual warfare, an elite end-time miracle working army of God, the Manifest Sons of God, spectacular spiritual experiences, dominionism, and so forth. In every instance the authors exhaustively examine what the Bible actually teaches about all of these things, compare this to NAR teaching, and conclusively demonstrate the aberrant, dangerous, sometimes heretical nature of the NAR. In Loving Memory….

Rev. Cecil R Smith of Pinson, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord May 3, 2015, at the age of 83. Funeral services were held at Lemley Funeral Home May 6, 2015, with Rev. Kent McClendon officiating.

Brother Smith received a certificate of ministry in 1995 and was licensed in 2001. He was an active minister in Grayson Valley Assembly of God (now LifeChurch) and served as pastor of Mt. View Assembly of God, Glencoe. In his later years, he assisted church planting pastors by serving in various positions.

Brother Smith is survived by his wife, Boots, three sons, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Rev. Willie E Hart of Wetumpka, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord October 10, 2015, at the age of 89. Funeral Services were held at Gassett Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Lindsey officiating.

Brother Hart was ordained in 1967. He began and served as pastor of Calvary Assembly of God, Brewton, and Bethel Assembly of God, Wetumpka. He also served as pastor of Pinedale Assembly of God, Clanton, and New Home Assembly of God, Wetumpka.

Brother Hart is survived by his wife, Quida, one son, one daughter, five grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Rev. John H Greenwood of Kaufman, Texas, went home to be with the Lord November 13, 2015, at the age of 92. Funeral Services were held November 16, 2015, at Eubanks Funeral Home, Canton, Texas, with Rev. T.L. Thompson officiating.

Brother Greenwood transferred into the Alabama District from the North Texas District as a licensed minister in 1962. He served as pastor of the following churches: Mckenzie Assembly of God, Castleberry Assembly of God, Calvary Tabernacle, and Faith Hill Assembly of God. Brother Greenwood was a widower and had no children.

Rev. Charles L Varnum of Dothan, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord November 21, 2015, at the age of 79. Funeral services were held at Harper’s Joy Assembly of God November 25, 2015, with Rev. Eric Varnum officiating.

Brother Varnum received a certificate of ministry in 1971, license in 1972, and was ordained in 1977. He served as pastor of the following churches: First assembly of God, Midland City; Battens Assembly of God, Enterprise; Georgetown Assembly of God, Panama City, Florida; Grantham Assembly of God, Dothan; First Assembly of God, Cottondale.

Brother Varnum is survived by one daughter, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

All applicants must be preparing for full‐time church ministry. Only those planning to attend one of the eighteen approved Assemblies of God colleges or universities will be considered for scholarships.
