DISTRICT SECRETARY‐TREASURER ewilson@adcag.org EDWARD WILSON
An Eternal Investment The older I get the more I realize the investments made in me by others. I think about the uncle who encouraged me to get into church. He gave me a number of Sunday School quarterlies I never used. He prayed for me. His faith kept him strong when he was wrongly judged and criticized to the point of having to leave the Pentecostal denomination he had served for many years. This move caused him to join a few others to build an Assembly of God church in my home community. His influence caused me to seriously look at the first church I joined; the one he built. After salvation I was taught by a couple who took time to share with me while they raised a young family. The meals I ate at their home and the evenings they spent answering my questions and correcting my misconceptions are too numerous to count. They looked beyond my ignorance and mistakes to nurture me. I found others in the church who would teach me, pray for me, and give me a platform from which to minister. Our church was so small that everyone was trained to do multiple ministries. That is how I learned I could stand before people to lead hymns and preach the word. They would praise the feeble efforts of my first sermons and tolerate my missed musical notes. I pray their investments were not in vain. I also learned how to become an investor in others. I learned early (I became lead pastor at the age of twenty) that discipleship was key to strong Christians. I say I was lead pastor but the truth is I became everything from janitor, Sunday schools teacher, secretary, lawn crew, visitation pastor, youth pastor, and anything and everything else because I opened a closed church. The people I won were totally ignorant of the things of God and needed to be taught the very basics. I once had a man say, “I just got saved and if I wouldn’t look silly I would go into the two‐three year old class and sit in those little chairs. I know nothing about God or His word.” The responsibility of investing is tremendous. To hold a new Christian in your hands is more daunting than holding a newborn baby. They are much alike but greatly different. Moving from serving one church to another was difficult because of the attachments to those in whom I invested. Would the next pastor care as much as I did and work as hard to train them in the things of God? The new church challenged me to find where each member was in the Lord and start investing in his or her life where the former pastor left off. Someone has aptly said, “You reproduce who you are.” Looking back, I only wish I had seen more people accept the call into the pulpit ministry. I am happy a number of people became teachers, group leaders, and board members, but there is something about seeing someone surrender to a ministry that takes them to foreign lands or other cities to invest in others. I keep a thank‐you letter in my desk drawer, written by a man who surrendered to pulpit ministry. He now serves as pastor. His kind words humble me and make me proud that God used me. His success pleases me. It seems God allowed my closing years to be my best years. It has been my distinct honor to lead Alabama School of Ministry for the past five years. Hundreds of students have enrolled and completed studies in preparation for ministry. Some are now pastors, Evangelists, and Sunday school teachers. Many of them I taught, while many other instructors (eternal investors) taught others. But wait, God isn’t through with me yet. My toes aren’t turned up in death. I still have breath. I am still an investor and will be until I die or Jesus comes back. I know of two ministers who continued to invest in the lives of others long after they retired from pastoral ministry. I pray God will trust me and use me to do the same.
Ken Draughon ALABAMA DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT ds@adcag.org
The old year is behind us, and 2018 is here and with that comes the task of moving into new territory and taking on new conquests for the Kingdom of God. As we look into 2018, we look at a block of time God has given us. We see twelve months, fifty-two weeks, 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds. And all is a gift from God. We have done nothing to deserve it, earn it, or purchase it. Like the air we breathe, time comes to us as a part of life. What are we going to do this year so when we wake up on December 31 we can hear our Lord say, “Well done!” As we begin this new year, make a plan to be the best for God you can this year. Jonathan Edwards said, “Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will.” Let me share a couple of scriptures with you. First, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland”(Isaiah 43:18-19). You may not feel like you have accomplished God’s plan for your life, but God is ready to help you be all that he has called you to be. The second text declares His intentions for you: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”(Jeremiah 29:11). 2018 is YOUR YEAR! Join me in seeking God as we begin this year walking by faith, not sight. ("For we walk by faith, not by sight…" 2 Cor. 5:7). Start your day with him and you'll end your day with him. Let's make 2018 a year that we DECREASE TO INCREASE! John the Baptist said, "I must decrease that he might increase.... (John 3:30). When we make him big by humbling ourselves, we will see the bigness of God. Join me this year expecting INCREASE in every area of our lives. This begins with our desire to make him big.
He must
INCREASE,

ON TOP OF THE WORLD FOR BGMC! On November 4, 2017, a team consisting of Ali Wimpee, Theresa Waldrop, Michael Waldrop and David Wimpee joined Alaska District Children’s Director, Pam Hodges for an event they called “On
Top of the World for Kids”. The event took place in North Pole, Alaska with the objective of raising money for Alabama and Alaska missions projects. The Alabama team selected projects with Tom McLane and Phil Schmidt while the Alaska team selected Haven House. Each person participated in the Artic Triathlon. They had to hike in snowshoes, dog sled, and take a polar plunge. It snowed every day with temperatures ranging from 6-20 degrees. Everyone survived! BGMC benefited as well. All monies are not yet in, but it is believed that the Alabama team had approximately a $15,000 impact while Alaska raised $10,000. The team also led three services for children while there. The last night was a regional event called “Rev It Up!” Some churches drove 6 hours on snowy roads
to attend. God did not disappoint. That night, Kids were saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. At 1AM on Saturday morning, that group departed for home. We arrived back to our location around 11PM that Saturday night, very tired but with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. Thank you for supporting BGMC!
