“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15: 13

EDWARD WILSON

DISTRICT SECRETARY‐TREASURER ewilson@adcag.org

Moving On The following account was reported by Col. T.L Broun of Charleston, West Virginia: “Two months after the evacuation of Richmond, business called me to Richmond for a few days, and on a Sunday morning in June 1865, I attended St. Paul’s Church. Dr. Minnegerode preached. It was communion day; and when the minister was ready to administer holy communion, a black man in the church arose and advanced to the communion table. He was tall, well‐dressed, and black. This was a great surprise and shock to the communicants and others present. Its effect upon the communicants was startling, and for several moments they retained their seats in solemn silence and did not move, being deeply chagrined at this attempt to inaugurate the “new regime” to offend and humiliate them during their most devoted Church services. Dr. Minnegerode was evidently embarrassed. General Robert E. Lee was present, and ignoring the action and presence of the negro, arose in his usual dignified and self‐possessing manner, walked up the aisle to the chancel rail, and reverently knelt down to partake of the communion, and not far from the black man. This lofty conception of duty by Gen. Lee under such provoking and irritating circumstances had a magic effect upon the other communicants (including the writer), who went forward to the communion table.” I make no attempt to defend the actions of the War Between the States. I only share the above story because of the toll the war took on General Robert E. Lee, and his willingness to move on. Arlington Cemetery was expanded to include the plantation owned by Gen. Lee before the war. He was stripped of his land, home, and livelihood. He went from wealth to poverty as a result of his actions. Gen. Lee also lost his citizenship. The reason. He made a choice and defended his right to make the choice. However, General Robert E. Lee, by the above example, showed us how to follow Philippians 3:13‐14, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Gen. Lee put the things of the past behind and chose to move forward with his life, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of his faith. Although Gen. Lee lost everything, he apparently never lost his spiritual compass. He chose to be obedient to God over his past mistakes or actions. He moved past his past to demonstrate the love of God that was evidently shed abroad in his heart. But we can’t stop with the example of Gen. Lee. What about the author of Philippians, the Apostle Paul? What did he have to forget? How about the death of Stephen? What about all the other Christians threatened and tormented for their faith? Was he justified in his actions? No, but he didn’t know that until his encounter with Jesus. Now we come to where we live. What do we need to forget? Who do we need to forgive? What actions have we taken that caused harm and injustice to others that we can’t take back? We all have a past. We all need a Savior. We who have accepted Jesus need to look forward to God’s blessings while on earth and the rapture that will take us from the earth. Nobody can undo the past. We can only look to the future and live and love as Jesus instructs in His word. As we approach Thanksgiving, let us most of all be thankful for Jesus and His sacrifice for us. And as we approach Christ‐ mas, may we receive the overwhelming peace given us at salvation. My prayer is that we will cease reminding ourselves of yesterday and begin living today and tomorrow with pleasing Jesus as our objective. Edna and I wish the very best for you as we end 2016 and move into 2017 with new excitement.

Ken Draughon ALABAMA DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT ds@adcag.org

We just completed our 2016 Alabama AG Sectional Council Tour. It is always great to share vision for our future and celebrate what God is doing among us during this tour. It is also wonderful to join together in fellowship at these gatherings. Let me express my deep appreciation for those of you that attended. I shared during the tour what I feel the Lord has impressed upon me about what may be “Mission Drift” among some of us. This is indicated through the decrease in both Holy Spirit and water baptisms as well as decreased Sunday morning attendance in many of our churches. The other indicator of this is the fact that one in three of our churches did NOT record a single salvation last year. I hope that this was a recording error. Nevertheless, the only thing that we have to go on is the information we have been given. We proudly proclaim that we are a Pentecostal fellowship meaning we have experienced the empowerment of the Holy Spirit through baptism in him. We look to the book of Acts, chapter two, for the foundation for this experience. Jesus said, “You shall have power….” He promised us the ability to change the world through his power flowing through us. If we claim that we have this world-changing power—what happened? Are we changing the culture to which we are assigned? This is world transforming power according to the New Testament. For our culture to be impacted for God’s kingdom, we must align ourselves with our God-given mission which comes out of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). We have been “empowered” by the Holy Spirit to transform the culture we are placed within. Mission drift occurs when we “drift” off course from God’s plan for our churches, ministries and communities. The only way to remain on the mission is to continually define the mission and evaluate to see if you are still on the mission. This process which become redundant. You must KNOW what your mission to be on it. The best way to know that is to create a mission statement which explains our reason for existence. It explains: WHAT a church does; WHO it does it for; and HOW it does what it does. The single greatest reason for “Mission Drift” is the lack of a clear mission and vision. Again, the key to keeping on the mission is knowing your mission. Once you know what your mission is you must evaluate it often and make adjustments to keep it on track. Anything of value must be evaluated often. The challenges of “Mission Drift” set in immediately for all ministries and the only way to protect your ministry is choosing to keep your mission pure through protecting the integrity of it continually. Leading any organization is hard work. Staying aligned to our core calling to evangelize and make disciples (Matthew 28) takes continued focus. This can be exhausting at times. Remember, in the end, Jesus will build his church. We are invited to partner with Jesus in building his church. You need to immediately begin a conversation with those who God has given you to lead your church or ministry. The sooner—the better! Together we can reset our mission to match God’s mission for us if we have drifted off course. Remember, “Mission Drift” happens to EVERY organization. As I close this article I want to use this season of Thanksgiving to thank everyone that assists us in this ministry to our Alabama AG fellowship. Cyndi and I are so thankful for you and your part with us in this ministry. We also want express our heartfelt wishes for you and your family to have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Be blessed is our prayer for you and yours.

live fully! We invite you to embrace all that Christ has to offer you. Throughout Scripture we see glimpses into God’s heart and the things He wants for His children. He longs for us to depend fully on Him. We don’t have to make sense of every circumstance or live in our own wisdom and strength. God wants us to trust Him with our whole heart.

Susan and I want to wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas. As we approach the holiday season, we pray for God’s richest blessings on your family and ministry!

Dr. Robert E. Carter, Jr drcarter@mon‐cre.net

What to Say and Not Say to the Grieving Not‐So‐Good Things to Say to Someone in Grief Remember: The goal is to comfort, not tell them how they should feel.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

I know how you feel. (Never say this!) At least she lived a long life. She brought this on herself. (ex. Smoker) There is a reason for everything. Aren’t you over him yet, he has been dead for awhile now. You can have another child.

7. She did what she came here to do and it was her time to go. (May be true, but terrible timing.) 8. Be strong. (This tells them to hold everything in and not to grieve.) 9. If you think this is bad, I know a family... 10. It all happened for the best. (This can feel shockingly painful.) 11. Try not to cry. He wouldn't want you to cry. (Don't speak for the deceased.) 12. It was God's will. (Many people already feel angry with God and this won't help at this time). 13. You can always remarry. (People are not replaceable). 14. Now you are the man/woman of the house. (Heavy burden to place on a child or teen. This has caused much pain in many children and teens. Often the extent of these damaging words are not realized until years later. Often teen girls or boys not only deal with the loss of a parent, but also have to take on many more responsibilities around the house which often leads to feelings of resentment on top of their raw grief.)

15. Let me tell you about my own loss which is similar to yours. (There will be a time for you to share, but not right now. Your role is to listen and stay with the person's loss. When we bring the focus to ourselves, we leave the per‐ son in a real way.) The Best Things to Say to Someone in Grief

1. I am so sorry for your loss. 2. I wish I had the right words, just know I care. 3. I don’t know how you feel, but I am here to help in any way I can. 4. You and your loved one will be in my thoughts and prayers. 5. My favorite memory of your loved one is… 6. I am always just a phone call away. 7. We all need help at times like this, I am here for you. 8. I am usually up early or late, if you need anything. 9. Give a hug instead of saying something. 10. Saying nothing, just be with the person.
