EDWARD WILSON

DISTRICT SECRETARY‐TREASURER

ewilson@adcag.org

Remembering a Simpler Time All of us have wished at some time or another for a return to a simpler time. It may have been because of the difficulties of the moment, or disappointing experiences. But all of us remember a simpler time in life. It may have been that you were raised in a small community like me. I can remember sleeping at an open front door at night without fear of harm. Had the door been closed and locked, it would have been somewhat futile because the skeleton key would open most doors in the community. But in this simpler time there was no air conditioning. I can remember going to the community store, the only one around. It took only a minute to find what I wanted and get it to the cashier. But the variety to choose from was really limited and the price usually high. I can remember when I could open the hood of my automobile and see almost every external part, and I could work on the internal with simple tools. But the horsepower and comfort was not what it is today. Simpler times. I also remember when church was simpler. It was the community church. I didn’t have to shop for one that suited me, but went because of the presence of the Lord. The seats were not padded, the room was not air‐conditioned, the altars were up front, and the pulpit was visible. The music was simpler because it was unrehearsed and spontaneous. The pianist was accompanied by a possible rhythm guitar and a lot of hand clapping and loud singing. The focal point of the service was an empty cross and the climax of the service was at the altar. Time was not a concern. Although workers had to be at work at an early morning hour, the service continued until the Lord was through and all minds were clear. As a result souls were saved, the saved were filled with the Holy Spirit, people were called into the ministry, and bodies were healed. Those simpler times will not be forgotten. Fast forward to today. The seats are padded, the altars are more often than not gone from view, and the pulpit is a small movable speaker’s stand. The music is rehearsed to the point that the Holy Spirit can’t encourage more or less of any given song. The worship group and musicians are loud and the congregation observes rather than participates. The hand clapping has subsided and the climax of the service is not at the altar. There was a simpler time in evangelism. We observed the “Great Commissions”, and went out sharing what the Lord had done. Now there is this thing called marketing. The service length is designed for the convenience of the attender. The worship is casual, like we are at a civic club or community meeting. Marketing has designed the service to attract a certain age or strata of people, not all that should be there. There are no expectations of participation in the worship or the work outside the building. No accountability. Oh, for the simpler times when a gathering of believers and seekers alike came with expectations. Could we be so brave as to look at the example of Jesus? He simply presented the gospel “good news” and people came by the droves. He simply challenged the people and they responded with favor or disfavor, but they responded. In John 6:66 so many followers left Him, he turned to his twelve faithful and said, “Will you go away also?” He preached faith and as a result the demonstration of the Holy Spirit healed the sick, cast out demons, provided miracles, raised the dead, and challenged people to forsake the world and follow Him into eternal life with the Father. His message was simple. His delivery was simple. His motive was simple. And His challenge was simple. Oh, and His results were phenomenal. Finally, in Luke 9 and 10, He simply sent the twelve disciples and others out to follow His example. His plan was simple. His instructions were simple. The testimony of great spiritual success was brought back with excitement because they simply followed. I long for simpler times, maybe because I am a simple person. Some may recognize that I am old‐fashioned. However, I remember the time when we simply had church and allowed God to come into His own house and take charge. A number of years ago, I visited with a neighboring pastor. He reminisced about the former days of revival in his denomination. Picking up a book, he said, “When I want to remember revival times, I read the testimonies in this book.” May we never reach the point where we experience revival by reading experiences of others. I pitied him because the church I was serving was seeing souls saved, the saved filled with the Holy Spirit, people called into the ministry, and bodies healed, all because of us following Jesus’ pattern and a simple presentation of the gospel. The cry of my heart is that we get back to basics. May we become people of the Word, people of the Spirit, and people who please the Father.

Ken Draughon, ALABAMA DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT

The buzzword among the majority of church leaders seems to be “relevant.” The question is often asked by ministers, “Is your church culturally relevant?” I often hear, “I want to be relevant.” Now, the problem, which arises out of this question, is who is defining the word, “relevant?” I heard a speaker recently say, regarding church culture, “Culture is changing every three to five years while the church’s culture is decades behind.” Tony Morgan wrote, “The culture around us is changing. People are changing. Families and communities are changing. Your “competition” is changing.” Let’s be honest; there is a problem in many of our churches concerning relevance in today’s culture. I’m NOT talking about BIBLE STUFF. I’m talking about the “ostrich syndrome” where many are burying their heads in the sand and not hearing the cry of their community. The purpose of the local church in every village, town, city or metropolis is to be a download portal for heaven. We must make a biblical impact on our community if we are to honor the Great Commission. When it comes to the church, Jesus is the founder, planter, and owner. “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:18-20 KJV). I deeply believe that every church, no matter their location, should have their finger on the pulse of their community. It would be biblically criminal to be “planted,” and every church was planted at one time or another, and not be sensitive to the community culture and spiritual need where you were placed. The local church was never intended to be an island in their community untouched by its need and spiritual condition. Every New Testament church must impact its community if it is to be a true New Testament church—the early church did. We must realize that the world is changing the way it receives input. The church must understand there is a need to adjust its internal culture to address the external culture it has been commissioned to reach in a way, which they can understand. The Old Testament described a people that understood this when it said, “And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do….”(1 Chronicles 12:32). The message has not changed since it came through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, but the way in which we need to communicate it is continually changing. Please don’t miss this year’s annual Sectional Council Tour in your area. WE will share some fresh insight on IMPACTING YOUR COMMUNITY. We are looking forward to some time together at these gatherings. I close with this: God has called us to turn Alabama upside down for Him and we MUST do so. Join me in this important time of synchronizing our hearts and purpose to IMPACT ALABAMA!

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Michael D. Sharp D. Min. District CE Director msharp@adcag.org

DISCIPLESHIP DOLLAR DAY Sunday, September 10, 2017 Sunday, September 10, is our annual Discipleship Dollar Day. We are asking each church to receive an offering of at least $1.00 for each person they average in Morning Worship, and send to the District Christian Education Department. The ministries of the C.E. Department directly impact every person in your local church, from the youngest to the oldest. This department is designed to give back to our churches, investing in you through ministry, resourcing, and equipping. Your support helps us to develop new ministries for you, to keep our event fees low, and to sponsor or subsidize adults and children at every event we hold. This year all proceeds from Discipleship Dollar Day will, again, go toward discipleship matertials for a home missions church in Alabama.

$1.00 may not seem like much, but it can make a BIG difference!

YOUTH CAMP 2017 Alabama Youth Camp has once again become a summer filled with God’s anointing and His wonderful presence. We had four weeks of powerful youth camp, and a total attendance of 2,359 students, leaders, and staff. God moved in mighty ways and we praise Him for the wonderful testimonies and reports that have come from your students. I pray that you have seen evidence of change in your young people and adults who have attended camp, and have benefited from the mighty touch of God they received. We would like to extend a big

thank you to all of the pastors, youth pastors, minister’s wives, and lay leaders and personnel who served a vital role in making these camps a huge success. A very special thank you is also in order for our incredible camp staff who played an integral role in the success of youth camp. Few events and experiences touch the lives of young people in the way camp does, which proves we can accomplish more together than we ever could alone. Listed below are a few of the statistics compiled from individual interviews from campers.

recap 2017 Girls Camp was amazing! We had so much fun from tie-dying shirts to cake decorating and from the spa to lake activities and more! God moved in great ways in our services. Barnabas Ministries has been working hard to encourage and strengthen our pastors, their families and our churches for over 20 years now. I have been blessed to see many who were hurting now happy in their marriage and ministry. Many marriages have been strengthened, addictions broken, churches strengthened, and family difficulties healed by our Lord. I have also seen the Lord work during difficult church conflicts, and bring unity back to the body of Christ. God has been so good! I have decided to make some changes and to semi‐retire. I will continue Barnabas Minis‐ tries, but with some adjustments. Although I will continue to minister to our credential holders I will no longer travel the state for counseling sessions. I will minister to our churches and ministers as asked by the District, and our ministers if they contact me di‐ rectly with the same confidentiality as always. I will only be seeing clients, however, in the Montgomery area. Sorry, but the doc will no longer be able to come to you. I am also pastor of Centenary AG in the Luverne area, and will continue doing so as long as the Lord wants me to. Should you be in the northern or southern part of the state and need counseling and don’t feel you can travel to the Montgomery area; or should you have members of your church that need counseling, you can go to the website www.AACC.net. There you should be able to find a Christian counselor in your area. Again, thank you for the honor of serving you and the Alabama District. If these changes affect you negatively I am truly sorry, but it is necessary for me to cut back on the travel for a number of reasons. May the Lord continue to bless you and yours and supply your every need. Robert E. Carter, Jr. Barnabas Ministries

Why a Bible School Like ALSOM?

There are many who are unable to pick up and move to a Bible school campus. They have a call on their life but they also have a family to support, a job to perform, and a hectic life to live. Others are not self‐starters. A total correspondence study is out because they haven’t developed self‐discipline to stay with the curriculum until completion. Others have learning disabilities that make it hard to concentrate on or retain the material. An instructor in a classroom can reinforce what has been read and learning can come more easily. All of these people have the same call. They have the same desire. They have a willingness to be obedient to God. Yet, they are hindered. This is why we offer ALSOM as an alternative to total correspondence or campus living. The curriculum is Pentecostal. The instructors are seasoned, ordained ministers. The classroom is inviting and not intimidating. Learning is made easy. Now you know why we offer ALSOM. The question is, will you take advantage of the opportunity to participate in a learning environment designed to assist you in following the call God has on your life? Enrollment is easy. Go to www.adcag.org and click on the ALSOM page. We would welcome you to join at any time during the year. You may take any or all of the offered courses. We are here to serve.
